“If there’s a bright light in this tragedy, that’s it,” ani Kenney kahapon nang dalawin niya ang isang evacuation center para sa mga biktima ng pagbaha sa Quezon City. “The Filipino spirit to me is the main thing, the spirit of getting back on your feet, of helping others. I think it’s a model for many others in the world,” ani Kenney sa mga reporter sa Diosdado Macapagal Elementary School sa Barangay Tatalon.

“Many in my staff lost everything they own and I have to tell you that they worked all weekend at the embassy to clean it up, like people here (in the evacuation center) dedicating themselves to others,” ani Kenney. “It left none of us untouched,” aniya. “And some of us who are more fortunate than

others, I think we all know how deeply this has affected so many many people across the Philippines.” “It was too much. I don’t know where I was getting my strength. I wouldn’t wish it to

happen even to my worst enemy,” ani San Jose sa INQUIRER kahapon.

Ayon kay US Ambassador K r i s t i e K e n n e y, b a h a g i n g pinagsanib na pagsasanay ng militar ang babaguhin at gagawing operasyong pantulong. “There will be medical teams, equipment to help clear debris, bulldozers, forklifts, and we will have some heavy-lift helicopters so we can help start cleaning up Manila so people can move on with their lives,” dagdag niya. “We’ll take the lead. What we’re trying to do is to put ourselves at the disposal of the [Philippine National] Red Cross so we tell the Red Cross what we have to bring here,” ani Kenney.

Cristine Reyes rediscovers God By Dolly Ann Carvajal

C

RISTINE Reyes is thankful that she’s safe and sound after being trapped on the roof of her house for 12 hours due to Typhoon “Ondoy.”

“I never prayed so hard in my entire life. Thank you to my brothers who saved my pamangkins and to Richard Gutierrez who risked his life to save me. It’s just our relationship with God that matters in the end. Second life ko na ito. So gagawin ko lahat to be better. The No. 1 in FHM’s sexiest women list now puts the Lord as numero uno in her life. And so should we all, with or without a raging storm.

Clueless Gabby

Gabby Concepcion is clueless about the real score between his daughter KC and Piolo Pascual. “I don’t ask her because I don’t want her to think nakikialam ako,” he says. “I’ll just wait for her to tell me.” Is he in favor of Piolo for KC? “Oo naman. Mabait at palasimba.” Has KC introduced him to PJ? “Yup. Natawa ako kasi sabi ni Piolo, ‘Hi Sir.’ Lumingon ako. Akala ko nandun si Gabby Lopez (laughs).” Gabs may be a lot older than Piolo but in the good looks department, they are equal in pogi points.

No kids yet

Diether Ocampo laughs off rumors that his fab GF Rima is pregnant. “The time will come for that,” Diet clarifies. “Imagine how adorable our kids will be.

She has met my son Dream. It’s a cool sight to see them together. No names for our future kids yet. The wedding should come first.” For now, Diet and Rima are each other’s babies.

‘Starstruck’ auditions

I immensely enjoyed watching the auditions of GMA 7’s phenomenal artista search, StarStruck V, in my “second home,” Iloilo. Thousands of aspirants trooped to SM Iloilo to make pabiti (Ilonggo for show off) their stuff. The artista wannabes gave their all in singing, dancing and acting. They also gamely answered questions of the strict auditions’ master. One applicant even flew from

Canada to try his luck in the Iloilo leg of the screening. Other contenders who caught my attention were a single mother, a tomboy and a finalist in another reality show. There was also a guy who had two red hearts painted on his cheeks to cover scars from an earlier suicide attempt—when he tried to iron his face. Even for just a fleeting moment, the Ilonggos/Ilonggas felt what it was like to have a few seconds of fame while onstage as their kababayans cheered them on. StarStruck V will be hosted by Carla Abellana, Raymond Gutierrez and Dingdong Dantes. Will the new Kapuso Starstruck winner come from Iloilo, the heart of the Philippines? As we say in Ilonggo—Damgo, Pati, Luwas (Dream, Believe, Survive)!

War-freak ‘Bro’

Could it be true that the actor who portrays Bro in May Bukas Pa got enraged when the staff of a telecoms company where he was supposed to pay his bills didn’t recognize him and gave him the runaround? The buzz is that he brought Santino along the next time he went to the telecoms office to prove that he’s part of the show since his face is hardly shown in his scenes. Perhaps he should internalize his role as Bro even off-cam so that he would be less of a warfreak.

‘‘The NCAA joins the nation in

the recovery of the damages caused by Tropical Storm “Ondoy.” The league, with the Policy Board leadership together with the Management Committee, reschedules the games of the second round to allow member schools to participate in joining relief efforts for the victims of ‘Ondoy.’ Games will resume on Oct. 2,” pahayag ng liga. ‘‘The NCAA will be joining the fund raising activities of the SBP, together with the UAAP, for the benefit of typhoon victims,” sabi ni Fr. “The NCAA enjoins the fans and alumni to support this endeavour by watching the Araneta Coliseum game and by bringing used rubber shoes, sneakers or slippers.”

Kenyan favored in Smart-Subic Int’l Marathon KENYAN runner Nelson Kirwarotich leads the foreign charge when he defends his title in the 2nd Smart Subic International Marathon that starts at the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway and ends at Remy Field on Oct. 24 and 25 in Subic Bay, Olongapo City. Rotich, who clocked 2 hours, 27 minutes and 11 seconds to nip Filipino Eduardo Buenavista (2:27:56) for the title last year, headlines a field expected to reach 10,000 that will negotiate a scenic route that will pass through Floridablanca, Pampanga. Speaking at the PSA Forum on Tuesday, Subic marathon founder Gen. Sam Tucay (ret.) and race organizer Adi delos Reyes said that at least 30 Kenyan runners have confirmed their participation in the event, along with a slew of participants from the United States, Australia and China.

ALAWANG beses nilang ginapi ang University of the East sa eliminasyon, ngunit hindi minamaliit ni Ateneo Blue Eagles coach Norman Black ang bangis ng Red Warriors sa simula ngayon ng UAAP title series. “We have beaten UE twice during the elimination round, so we definitely have the psychological advantage,” sabi ni Ateneo coach Norman Black. “But of course, it will be a different story in the Finals. They’re a veteran crew so we’re expecting a tough Game 1.” “We’re going into the game with a lot of confidence, we’re going there to win,” diin ni Black. “As a coach personally, it’s all for my players. I’ve had my successes as a player already, I’ve had a lot of successes as a coach. But every time you coach a group of guys who believe in what you’re trying to execute, then you want to win with them.”

“We know they are tipped to win, but this is a chance of a lifetime so we can’t be contented of just making it to the Finals,” wika ni Chongson. “Hopefully we can negate all of Ateneo’s advantages,” ani Chongson. “But whatever success UE has now, 65 percent of it is because of our PBL stint. It helped us toughen up.” Magiging matindi ang match-up nina Ateneo slotman Rabeh Al-Hussaini at UE big man Pari Llagas.

“Our plan strictly revolves around our defensive game,” ani Black. “We make stops, then we run and when we have our half court set, we’ll try to get the ball down to Rabeh. Our game plan is pretty much set now.” “Most of the UE players are good on one-on-one offensive players,” dagdag ni Ateneo assistant Sandy Arespacochaga added. “There’s Pari Llagas on the post and Paul Lee from the perimeter. They have other players who know their roles. Elmer Espiritu can play inside and outside and Val Acuña is a very tall three-point shooter. So our individual defense is what coach Norman is focusing on.” “I like our system now, kasi lumalabas laro ko,” sabi ni Lee na may 21.5 puntos average sa semifinals. “Coach just lets me do what I want.” “It will still be a team effort,” sabi ni Chongson. “Definitely we need everybody to step up. If you’d noticed, we have different starters every game simply because we want to be unpredictable. The bench will also play a crucial role.”
