“Enough of this nonsense. If necessary, we will go to court and test our environmental laws,” mariing sinabi kahapon ni Environment Secretary Lito Atienza. “But I am hoping we won’t have to do that,” dagdag niya. “He [MMDA Chair Bayani Fer-

nando] should know better, he knows the laws,” dagdag ni Atienza. “I have told my people to watch the area and make sure no tree is cut,” ani Atienza.

Dinukot sina Lacaba, Notter a t Va g n i n g m g a a r m a d o n g kalalakihan noong Enero 15 makaraang siyasatin ang isang pasilidad ng tubig sa Jolo provincial jail.
“Later on, he learned to do away with those words. He realized that the less he got angry, the easier for the pain to go away,” kwento ni Pia sa mga kapamilya, kaibigan, at tagahanga na nagtipon sa Christ the King church sa Green Meadows, Quezon City. I’m sorry, Mama, I got sick.”
Alberto Ampil, S.J., “Francis has gone away. Why him? No answer can lessen our grief and diminish our sorrow.” “I know you want to be very private about this. I just want to say that when you told Francis that all he had to concentrate on was to get well, light shone

baho sa isang home for the elderly sa Estados Unidos. E Sauler

Robin worries about his children I
By Marinel R. Cruz
F HE had his way, actor Robin Padilla said he would not allow his daughters to visit war-ravaged areas in Mindanao.
Robin, a Muslim convert, made this statement during the press launch of GMA Films’ suspense thriller Sundo, in which he plays a resigned military operative gifted with a third eye. His daughters Queenie, 17, and Kylie, 15, have like-
wise embraced Islam. In September last year, Queenie joined a relief operation in North Cotabato and Maguindanao in Mindanao, where villages were displaced by armed clashes between the government and the Moro National Liberation Front. Kylie, who was then part of her dad’s fantasy drama series Joaquin Bordado, alROBIN so expressed interest
in visiting war-torn areas in the north. “Delikado ang pumunta roon,” Robin told INQUIRER Entertainment. “Ang mga bata ngayon, basta alam nilang tama sila, ipaglalaban nila,” he explained. What would you have your children do? Guys are starting to show interest in Queenie now. I don’t mind, basta binata.

That’s good for JC.

TODAY IS WORLD KIDNEY DAY
Take good care of your kidney By Dr. Benita Padilla, President, Philippine Society of Nephrology
A
RE you among those with hypertension who think they do not have to take medications to lower their blood pressure? “I feel well even if my blood pressure is 160/100 so I’m ok.” Sorry, you risk developing heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. You might even die within the next 5 to 10 years. But there is hope.
In 2007, more than 7000 people started dialysis in the Philippines. Among them, 42% developed kidney failure because of diabetes and 22% had kidney failure due to hypertension. These two diseases are the top causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the world. CKD is the medical term describing permanent damage to the kidneys, which in its most advanced stage requires dialysis or transplantation to prolong life. It is a major problem—there are now more than 500 million people who have CKD in the world—and most of them don’t know it. Chronic kidney disease develops slowly and you often feel well until it is too late. This is why the International Society of Nephrology, and its member societies such as the Philippine Society of Nephrology, initiated the celebration of World Kidney Day every second Thursday of March.
How can I take care of my kidneys ?
The good news—even if you have hypertension or diabetes, you don’t have to end up with CKD. The bad news—there is no quick fix. Your blood pressure and blood sugar have to be normalized with proper diet, regular exer-
cise and regular medications. In short, be serious about “lifestyle change.” Give up smoking and you lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, lung disease and kidney disease without spending a centavo. In fact, you would have saved some money for medicines. Eat more vegetables and less hamburgers—and maybe you won’t need that cholesterol-lowering drug anymore. Walk more and ride taxis less—and maybe you won’t need that insulin shot anymore. Better control of hypertension and diabetes translates to better care of the kidneys.
Keep the pressure down
Keep your blood pressure low if you don’t want your kidneys to go. Believing that “my body is already used to a high blood pressure” is never correct. Your blood pressure goal is something you should know. For diabetics and those already with kidney disease, blood pressure should be kept below 130/80. For most others, blood pressure should not be maintained below 140/90. Ask your doctor whether you are achieving the correct blood pressure. Medications to control hypertension can cost as little as P25 a day. Dialysis costs about P30,000 a month. That means that one would spend the same amount of money paying for one’s medications for 10 years as paying for dialysis in 3 months!
Have your kidneys checked
The first simple steps to find whether your kidneys are happy are a routine urinalysis and a serum creatinine. These will set you back between P150 to P400 depending on where you go. Then your doctor can decide if you need other tests. Compare that with P30,000 a month for dialysis. Prevention makes sense, and saves cents!

Lucia Realtors at Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings. “Coming into today, I felt that we had a better chance because we had one week of practice from our last game before this one,” sabi ni Reyes.“I’m worried that we have to score 130 points to win this game. We scored 121 against Purefoods (in our first game) and we still
lost. We got to find a way to play better defense.” “We’re still far from the shape we want to be,” sabi ni Reyes. “We’re cramming to get back in shape.”
MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL boxing training pool are assured of competent coaches, the best training equipment and even continuing education as they prepare for major international tournaments.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) executive director Ed Picson visited Abap’s training camp in Baguio over the weekend and conducted one of the association’s regular meetings with the boxers
and their coaches. “Since vital tournaments are fast approaching, we want to know every concern of the boxers and their coaches like equipment as well as the training conditions here in Baguio,” said Picson.

Burlington suportado PBL, Liga Pilipinas
‘‘We believe that sports is essential to character and nation building, so despite the financial meltdown, Burlington is an avid sponsor of sporting events particularly basketball," sabi ni Ruddy Tan, General Manager ng Burlington.

POC at PSC.

Useful directions on product labels
ASIDE from unit pricing, open dating and nutritional labeling, product labels provide other useful information for consumers such as directions on how the product should be used, or if food, prepared and/or stored.
Some readyto-wear clothes require dry cleaning, others only need to be hand-washed while still others can be machine-washed. White clothes should not be washed together with dark-colored clothes. Fortunately in this country, the water generally used in home washing machines is not hot, so there is less risk of shrinkage.

The labels of prescription and over-the-counter medications sometimes provide directions on how many pills should be taken and warn of contraindications, possible drug interactions and allergic reactions. Products that could be toxic if ingested or their fumes are inhaled, such as cleaning fluids and insecticides, should have a warning on the package and what to do in case of an emergency. mamimili kung sakaling mali ang paggamit ng produkto, at upang iwasan ang kaso na maaring ihabla ng mamimili na nagkamali sa pag-gamit ng produkto. When it comes to processed and packaged foods, the consumer plays an important role in ensuring that the food stays safe. If the label says “Keep refrigerated,” refrigerate the food at all times, including before opening the food and afterwards if you keep it for later use upang maagapan ang pagtubo ng bakterya at mikrobyo. “Refrigerate after opening” means refrigerate immediately after opening at a temperature of 4 degrees Centigrade or cooler to prevent the multiplication of germs. Only proper cooking destroys germs like salmonella in frozen breaded chicken wings or nuggets, for example.
