TITLE: A Student Perspective Study on the Effectiveness of the Teacher Educators Together Ethics Toolkit, in its Promotion of Professionalism and Ethics in Teaching
ABSTRACT Training in the fields of ethics and professionalism plays a vital role in teacher education (TE) programmes. One cross-institutional initiative is this regard of the Teacher Educators Together (TET) Ethics Toolkit, a training package delivered jointly by the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), and offered to postgraduate student teachers on the Professional Masters of Education (PME) programme, in NUIG. The primary aim of this research is to explore, from a student perspective, the effectiveness of the TET Ethics Toolkit, in its promotion of professionalism and ethics in Teaching. The objectives of this dissertation are to: (1) clarify the meaning of the term ethics and identify key philosophical perspectives or models of ethics, with reference to key literature in the field of ethical philosophy, (2) discuss the requirements of ethics and professionalism in teaching, with reference to codes of professional conduct for teachers, both nationally and internationally, (3) provide a concise background account of the TET collaboration and the implementation of the TET Ethics Toolkit in NUIG, and (4) establish student perspectives on the effectiveness of TET. The methodology employed in the research is literature analysis, which includes documentary analysis of the NUIG PME TET student evaluation survey data (2017). Key findings include, that the research participants had a deeper working knowledge of professional codes of conduct in the teaching profession, the toolkit case study analysis of ethical dilemmas in teaching, using different ethical lenses, was particularly effective in awareness raising and reflection on ethics and professionalism in teaching, and that the learning experience was overall an enjoyable one. In sum, the TET Ethics Toolkit emerged as a highly effective toolkit for the training of students in regard to the professional and ethical requirements in teaching. This study recommends an expanded cross- institutional primary research study in 2019-2020, to incorporate undergraduate and postgraduate students in NUIG and GMIT.
