CONTEXT AND RATIONALE: 

Based from the result of Phil Iri Group Screening Test conducted last August 12, 2018. It was found out that 27.02% are independent (10 out of 37 learners) readers.

This Project READY will try to implement to measure the reading ability of the respondent and help the teacher identify the factors that affect the reading ability of Grade 3 selected learners.

It will also take actions to know if the interventions to be use will help them to improve their level, and in conducting the Post Test using Phil Iri Materials from frustration to independent reader.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE:  Improving

Reading Skills through the Project READY (Read to Educate and Develop Young minds) is a short term intervention, appropriate to increase the learner’s reading skills level of learning.

 It

is also a motivation to the learners to learn with their peers, that needs time and effort.

 According

to Archeretal (2003) studies on adolescents and adults confirm that it is never too late to overcome a reading problem although early identification and intervention are most effective.

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE: 

Poor working memory is another factor that affects a student’s ability to read proficiently and comprehend text (Alloway, Gathercole, Kirkwood, & Elliott, 2009; Swanson, Kehler, & Jerman, 2009).

To facilitate student learning, adaptions of the curriculum are needed, and a focus on word recognition and reading strategies is necessary so that students can read independently. Deshler et al. (2001).

This action research will conduct the intervention to find out the effectivity of Project READY (Read to Educate and Develop Young Minds) to improve the reading ability of Grade Three Learners’ in San Roque Elementary School for academic year 2018-2019.

ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS: It will seek to answer the following questions:  1. What is the level of Reading of conducting the Pretest Phil Iri Group Screening Test?  2. What are the factors that affect the learners reading ability?  3. What are the significance effects of Project READY during the Pre and Post Interventions to Grade 3Loyal?

EXPECTED OUTPUT: 1. To increase the 27.02 % independent readers to 50%.

PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY: To answer the problems for this research, the following activities will serve as interventions: 

Peer to win it – They will work in pair and read 50 words in paragraph for 5 minutes, followed by a comprehension check with 3-5 items. A reward will be given (such as candies, a star sticker, etc.) This activity will be implemented during Tuesday at 1:00-1:30 in the afternoon.

Books for Sale – researcher will provide printed materials to the learners every Tuesday at 3:30 pm as part of their activity to read at home. Every Thursday’s (1:00-1:30pm) teacher will conduct a thorough follow up and give some activity. If they read and answer it correctly a reward is waiting for them after the quarter.

PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY: To answer the problems for this research, the following activities will serve as interventions: 

Little Teacher Reader – Each small group will have a corresponding teacher who will initiate the said activity. This activity is schedule during Wednesday every 1:00-1:30 pm only.

Family is Love – the proponent will give an activity to Parents, to follow up their child’s reading performance at home to show their love for reading and to improve their reading ability skills. A contract of agreement will be signed by both parties. Printed materials such as flashcards (words phrases, stories) will be distributed during Friday at 3:50-4:15pm and to be check it on Monday.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS: The result of Grade 3-Loyal in Phil Iri Group Screenng PreTest will serve as the basis to conduct this action research study.  Survey

Form will be distributed to the respondent to know if they have good comprehension level and factors that affect reading skills.

 This

action research will employ descriptive method of research in discussing the answers presented in the three questions mentioned.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS: a.) Participants The participants of the study are the identified (27) frustration readers of Grade 3 Loyal for academic year 2018-2019. b.) Data Gathering Method  The

result of Pre Test for Phil Iri Group Screening (Grade 3-Loyal) will be collected and evaluate to get the number of frustration readers.  Parents agreement will be distributed to those respondent in the propose study.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS: b.) Data Gathering Method 

There will be a home visitation during three consecutive Sundays of December for the distribution of the survey form. It will be collected on the 4th Sunday of December to identify the cause and effect of having a poor reading ability.

Researcher will conduct the Post-Test of GST (Group Screening Test in Phil Iri) to know if there’s an increase of number of frustration level to independent.

Lastly, gather the data result of those learners who shows improvement in reading skills.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS: c.) Data Analysis Plan 

Percentage method will be used to get the number of respondent in frustration level to independent.

The following formula will be used to determine the increase of number of Independent reader. P =

No. of score Total # of Items

whereas; If the pupil got 15 score out of 20 questions he/she will classify as an independent reader. 

To determine if the learners in the frustration level improve their reading ability to independent level. This formula will be used.

% = No. of Pupils got 15 scores above Total # of Respondent Qualitative Method used to determine the factors affecting the reading ability of the learners.
