Tinikling Dance/Global citizenship Lesson Plan Day 1 Required Equipment: 12 PVC pipes, 12 wood blocks, 12 elastic bands, music Opening/Introduction: Students will be introduced to our dance unit and tinikling dance! We will discuss how tinikling is a traditional Pilipino dance and why we are going to be learning this dance. I will talk about global citizenship, and will have students reflect upon their Jewish identity here at our school and talk about our core values (truth, respect, kindness, justice, repair the world, community) and compare with other cultural events we’ve participated in at school such as Lunar New Year and Persian New Year. Students will think, pair share with their galaxies on why it is important to learn about different cultures.

We will talk briefly on the history of tinikling dance such as what country it was originated in, and how the dance is mimicking the tinikling bird. The farmers in the “lowlands” would try to catch the bird by the ankles by using two bamboo poles. After discussing the history, we will begin learning these items: o Count 1-2-3 o Poles and tapping together (practice tapping to beat of the song/NO DANCERS) o Steps- Right foot in/Left foot in/Right foot out/Left foot lift (Start with poles on the floor first to practice steps) We will then practice the basic dance steps with tinikling bands. (This will help students feel safer and will not be an issue if students timing or steps are off. Once students show a level of proficiency, I will incorporate music and students will perform the basic step with music.

Closure Students will put the equipment away, and have a seat in their galaxies. On their way back to their seats, students will have to give 5 high five’s to different students to show an appreciation and sign of support. We will review some of the history of tinikling and why we are performing tinikling in physical education class. Students will then hear about how they will be assessed at the end of the unit and I will provide them with the assessment sheet so they can read how they will be assessed at the end of the unit.
