Warm up: The teacher will start the class by playing the song (video format) about days of the week, from the web page https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIQsyHoLudQ (children know a similar song, so a change could be good) this song has some variations (children will have to sing softly, then loudly, then they will have to clap their hands, stomp their feet, sing proudly) The teacher will present a set of disorganized cards (one apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries, five oranges, a piece of chocolate cake, a salami, a piece of cherry pie, a cupcake, a sausage, a pickle, a lollipop, a slice of watermelon, a slice cheese and one ice-cream and she will ask if they remember what the caterpillar ate on Monday, Tuesday and so on. As they answer she will stick the flashcards below the days of the week (the days of the week are already on the board as permanent posters). When all the pieces are on its place, teacher and children will count together to see how much food the caterpillar ate.
Development The teacher will explain they will play a game, presenting a set of cards that they will have to rearrange in order to have the correct sequence of the story (each will have their own set of cards). The first one to get the sequence right will win. After the teacher has checked the sequence they will stick it on the notebooks along with the date. Note: This activity was programmed to be done the first class, since there wasn’t enough time to do everything; it was rescheduled to be used as part of the development for this class. Now the teacher will present a poster with a chart divided into healthy and unhealthy food. As example she will use vocabulary children know from previous classes (French fries, broccoli, hamburger, bananas, cheese, donuts). She will now ask them to organize the food they learned from the Hungry Caterpillar into the chart. For this the teacher will provide little pieces of paper children will use to draw and write different items of food to be placed in the chart. The chart will stay in the classroom for future reference. Round up Next the teacher will present a worksheet children will use to make their own collages, for this the teacher will bring to class papers of different colours and textures for them to paint or glue in their worksheets. They will have to draw a circle around food that is healthy and write an H and a circle (of different color) around the food that is unhealthy and write a U, also they will
have to write their names on the worksheet. The finished jobs will stay at the institute until the last class (they will be glued in a big poster and presented for parents and classmates to see).
