Supporters of Khairy and Mukhriz hurl abuses at each other and almost trade blows outside the hall where Khairy was delivering his victory speech. Police acted fast to break up the groups.

KUALA LUMPUR: Khairy Jamaluddin, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin triumphed at the keenly-fought Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings elections last night. Khairy, the 33-year-old incumbent Youth deputy chief and sonin-law of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, beat Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, 45, and Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, 43. It was nail-biting finish as it took more than four hours before the votes were finally tallied past 11pm due to recounts. Khairy, who had been issued a warning by the Umno disciplinary board for breach of ethics in the campaign, got 304 votes from the 793 delegates. For supporters of Mukhriz, the Jerlun MP and third son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and former Selangor mentri besar Khir, the loss was clearly difficult to take as they jeered when “KJ” was chanted.

It’s Khairy, Shahrizat and Rosnah Khairy, in his victory speech, said the winner does not take all, and the losers do not lose all, indicating that all had a role to play in the wing. Datuk Razali Ibrahim, 39, the Muar MP, won the deputy chief post, beating Datuk Reezal Merican Naina Merican, 37, who is political secretary to outgoing prime minister Abdullah. Razali got 417 votes. At the Wanita Umno polls, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil thrashed incumbent chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz in a contest that

was riddled with controversy and accusations of betrayal. Rafidah, nicknamed Iron Lady because of her tough-talking and no-nonsense demeanour, collected only 280 votes against Shahrizat’s 507 votes. The 66-year-old veteran had been Wanita chief for 21 years, except for a break of one term when she lost in 1996 to Datuk Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman. She was dropped from the cabinet after the last general election. Shahrizat was elected as Rafidah’s deputy in 2000 and became popular with her ready smile and pleasant personality. In her victory speech, which Rafidah was not present to share, Shahrizat expressed thanks to Mahathir who gave her the chance to contest the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat 15 years ago, and to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for not giving up on her although she lost her seat

in the last general election. “To Najib, here we come,” she said, indicating that the women wing was ready to support his leadership. Her deputy is Datuk Kamilia Ibrahim who had won uncontested. Over at the Puteri wing, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin became the new chief, replacing Datuk Noraini Ahmad who did not defend her position due to the age factor. She polled 245 votes to beat five other contestants – Datin Ismalina Ismail, Ida Rahayu Md Noor, Datuk Shahniza Shamsuddin, Saarah Ali Bashah and Bibi Sharliza Mohd Khalid. The deputy chief post was won by Datuk Shahanim Mohamad Yusoff who polled 353 votes to beat four others – Nolee Ashilin Mohd Radzi, Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin, Nordiana Shafie and Hazlinda Mohd Zerain.

Winner does not take all, says new Youth chief Before the count ...

Face -off ...

Volunteers carry ballot boxes after the elections for the various posts in the Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri, were held yesterday.

Umno vice-presidential candidate Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar meets a “Syed Hamid 05” campaigner wearing a mask complete with sunglasses.

KUALA LUMPUR: New Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin admitted last night he did not win convincingly as he only got 304 votes from the 793 delegates. “But the winner does not take all, and the losers do not lose all,” he said, indicating that the other two contestants – Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo – have a role to play in the wing. He sincerely thanked those who said that “KJ is over” but promised that the people (who make such remarks) shall not be sidelined. He said Umno Youth will defend the main pillars of the country but will show respect to their Barisan Nasional comrades who show equal respect to Umno Youth. The wing, he said, will not only fight for the Malays but also other races.

Khairy’s victory was marked by an ugly scene outside the hall where the results were announced. Supporters of Khairy and Mukhriz started heckling each other, and there were reports of a scuffle. Policemen acted fast to break up the groups. Mukriz said he accepted the results with open heart, and pointed out that this was not the first time he has lost (he lost in the Kubang Pasu division polls in 2004). “I will learn from this experience. I congratulate Khairy on his win,” he said. He hoped the wing will continue to be strong and fight for the party. The other vanguished contestant, Mohd Khir, was not present at the hall when the results were announced past 11pm.
