HANDOUT #1 WHY ASK A QUESTION?

* A question is an invitation to think. * “The quality of the thinking is given in the quality of the question.” “Judge a man by his questions rather than by his answers.” -- Voltaire High-quality questions reflect and lead to high-quality, rigorous thinking. This is what is required of students, therefore….. Questions are verbs….and they force your brain to do something. Because of this, there is a unique power in questions.

LEVELS OF QUESTIONS-COSTA’S LEVEL OF QUESTIONS LEVEL 1 FACTUAL QUESTIONS:    

have only one answer answers found RIGHT in the text info is recalled in the exact manner/form it was heard short answers (usually 1 or 2 words)

Level I questions start with:  define, describe, identify, list, name observe, recite, scan, explain, locate, paraphrase  Recall and comprehension of factual knowledge. Level 1 questions start with    

Define Describe List Name

 Identify  Recall  Reporter Q’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How?)

LEVEL 2 INTERPRETIVE QUESTIONS  more than one possible answer w/evidence from the text  more abstract, one must manipulate or use the information from the text to find the answer  involves finding info. that supports generalizations or decision-making  Short answer or essay  Making sense of the gathered information: Level II questions start with:  analyze, compare, group, infer, contrast, sequence, illustrate, retell, synthesize, sort, diagram, summarize LEVEL 3 EVALUATIVE QUESTIONS  answer goes beyond text  applying information  answer depends on personal experiences, values, interpretation of literature, etc.  asks for judgments to be made from information  gives opinions about issues, judge validity of ideas Essay questions This is “off the page” thinking and questioning that applies the knowledge in new ways.
