UNIT: 4.2: THE REIGN OF SULTAN ABDUL MOMIN

SUB-TOPICS: TERRITORIES LOST TO BROOKE

OBJECTIVES:

MATERIALS:

At the end of the lessons students should be able to:

 Pictures of Sultan Abdul Momin, James and Charles Brooke.

 Identify who is Sultan Abdul Momin.  Explain the effects of the signing of the treaties  Map of Brunei that shows territories between Sultan Abdul Momin and Brookes. before and after the reign of Sultan Abdul Momin.  List out the territories, Brunei lost to the Brookes from the signing of the treaties.  Locate on the map the territories took by the  Timeline on the loss of Brunei territories to Brookes. Brookes. PROCEDURE: SET INDUCTION:

1. Show picture of Sultan Abdul Momin and ask the clas if they could identify the person in the picture.

2. Tell the class who was Sultan Abdul Momin and his relationship with Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II by the genealogical line of the sultan. 3. Show the map of Brunei territories that inherited by Sultan Abdul Momin. LESSON DEVELOPMENT: 1. Ask the class whether they think Brunei will lose more territories or not during the reign of Sultan Abdul Momin? If yes, ask who do they think took more of Brunei territories.

2. Then show the class the pictures of James and Charles Brooke and tell, these were the two westerners that took more territories from Brunei.

3. Explain that Brunei lost its territories through the signing of a series of treaties briefly. 4. Show the map on Brunei that lost to the Brookes during the reign of Sultan Abdul Momin. 5. Individual work: Maps are given to the class, their task is to locate/color the territories Brunei lost to the Brookes and identify the year when Brunei lost the territories.

6. Explain in details on the losses of Brunei territories to the Brookes in details between 1850’s to 1885 and at the same time the class will check their work. 7. Activity (next 1 period): Do class project on Giant timeline on events that occurred between 1853 until 1884 (make it competition between groups) – will be conducted in the next lesson. ASSESSMENT:
