says NZ Police who are gearing up for changes to obtaining new firearms licenses starting July 1st. About 230,000 licensed firearms owners own and use New Zealand’s estimated 1.5 million privately owned guns (legal and illegal). Guns are not currently a major political issue, but surprisingly, gun laws in New Zealand are notably more liberal than other countries like US or Canada. Gun licenses are issued at the discretion of the Police in New Zealand. The new rules come as figures released to media show 99 percent of firearms applications in New Zealand were approved in the past year. “Much like the process for obtaining a driver license, first-time applicants will now need to pass a theory test and undergo practical training to

obtain a firearms license,” says Acting Superintendent Mike McIlraith. This will make it harder to buy and own guns.

could lead to more people using guns illegally and an increase in the ‘grey guns’ market.

The firearms theory test and practical training require applicants to show that they have a strong understanding of the Arms Code and how to stay safe with firearms. Clubs will play a vital role in bringing new firearms users together with experienced users.

According to the police’s report: “Research indicates there is already a large pool of illegally held firearms in New Zealand and that firearms of almost any type can be obtained relatively easily from within the criminal fraternity without needing to source illicit firearms from overseas.”

We are not talking about farmers who need firearms for work, looking after stock and pests or hunters, because there are a hell lot of other firearms that are not used for that,” says Police Association President Chris Cahill. The NZ gun lobby is skeptical of the need for change, concerned the changes

But what the Police wants is to tighten the gun rules, seek help from firearms clubs, and the volunteer instructors from the programme ending 30 June, to provide community-based mentoring and to partner with new firearms users creating awareness and public safety at large.

Cover Story

Why is Ramadan so special to Muslims? The holy month is upon us once again. What happens during the month? Most importantly, it is definitely much more than fasting By Raziqueh Hussain The long nights in prayer, the lavish feasts at sunset and the watermelon season, oh the holiness is so imminent everywhere… the fact that Ramadan is so near has already got me excited! The holy month is starting this year on May 15 or 16 (depending upon the moon sighting) and it’s a global matter and most of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims will be observing it. This means there’s a good chance you might encounter someone - a friend, a co-worker, the barista making your latte at Starbucks, your child’s teacher - who is fasting. For a month each year, more people may share this religious practice than during any other four-week period, whether they are rich or poor, white, black or brown, in school, employed or retired, driving a taxi or running a multinational corporation, heartbroken or in love, devout or skeptical. Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year for Muslims. Prophet Mohammed said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.”

It was during this month that Allah revealed the first verses of the Quran - Islam’s sacred text, to Prophet Mohammed, on a night known as “The Night of Power” (or Laylat al-Qadr in Arabic).

Many people are exempt from fasting because they’re pregnant, nursing, traveling, ill, or too old or too young for the fast to be a healthy practice. Generally, young people are expected to fast once they’ve reached puberty, but traditions may vary from family to community to nation. Some who abstain may give additional charity instead, or offer food and hospitality to others. During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims fast every day from dawn to sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline - of deep contemplation of one’s relationship with Allah, extra prayer, increased charity and generosity, and intense study of the Quran. But if that makes it sound super serious and boring, it’s really not. It’s a time of celebration and joy, to be spent with loved ones. According to the Quran, the Prophet said: “Whoever does not give up false statements and evil deeds and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink [or fasting]” - meaning that you must work on your whole person. The month is intended to improve morality and character, so there are more regular mosque visits alongside a personal attempt to work on positive traits and thoughts. Whereas you’d normally get distracted by other things in your life, during Ramadan you are in a constant state of hunger and thirst. Therefore, you are constantly aware of why you are fasting. A typical day during Ramadan for me is to wake up well before dawn for suhoor, (to eat the first meal of the day). This means eating lots of high-protein foods and drinking as much water as possible right up until dawn, after which you can’t eat or drink anything. At dawn, we perform the morning prayer. Since it’s

usually still pretty early, we go back to sleep for a bit before waking up again to get ready for the day. We don’t avoid work or school or any other normal duties during the day just because we are fasting. When the evening call to prayer is finally made (or when the alarm on your phone’s Muslim prayer app goes off), we break the day’s fast with a light meal really more of a snack - called an iftar (literally “breakfast”), before performing the evening prayer. This is usually followed by a larger meal a bit later in the evening, which is often shared with family and friends in one another’s homes throughout the month. Then it’s off to bed for a few hours of sleep before it’s time to wake up and start all over again There are good reasons for only having a small snack to break your fast before performing the evening prayer and then eating a bigger meal later. Muslim prayers involve a lot of movement - bending over, prostrating on the ground, standing up, etc. Doing all that physical activity on a full stomach after not having eaten for 15 hours is a recipe for disaster. Just trust me on this one. Some of you may be thinking, “Wow, that sounds like a great way to lose weight! I’m going to try it!” But in fact, Ramadan is actually notorious for often causing weight gain. That’s because eating large meals super early in the morning and late at night with a long period of low activity bordering on lethargy in between can wreak havoc on your metabolism. Despite the hardship of fasting for a whole month, most Muslims (myself included) actually look forward to Ramadan and are a little sad when it’s over. There’s just something really special about knowing that tens of millions of your fellow Muslims around

the world are experiencing the same hunger pangs, dry mouth, and dizzy spells that you are, and that we’re all in it together. No matter where a fasting Muslim may be, Ramadan is a call for an internal spiritual and physical cease-fire. The point of the fast is to worship the Divine by demonstrating control over earthly desires -- typically food, drink, tobacco and sex -- during daylight hours. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate “high road” values -- being gracious, generous and gentle -- toward others no matter how cranky or irritated you might be, especially when your blood sugar plummets and your mouth is too dry to speak. The combination of physical and spiritual self-awareness is a test of character: When your stomach growls from hunger will you snap at your pesky child? Your thoughtless neighbour? A careless colleague? The boorish driver who cut you off ? Or will you remain peaceful, practicing the patience and graciousness you promised yourself and your Creator? A practice it is, replete with discoveries and acknowledgements of imperfection and abounding with opportunities to ask forgiveness and try again. So if you’re not supposed to get angry or complain or gossip during Ramadan, how come terrorist attacks by groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda always seem to spike during Ramadan? How do you justify fighting during a month -- or on a day -- that prescribes piety and self-restraint? How can fasting people commit acts of war and terrorism during Ramadan? Can they call themselves “Muslim” with integrity? During the hajj, Islam’s other great religious practice, you are forbidden even to kill a fly while you are in Mecca. So, to kill a human being in the name of Islam .....? This has always puzzled me.

Property theft from vehicles The Onehunga Police have recently been investigating a series of car break in’s from around the Maungakiekie area after two bags of property were dumped at Jellicoe park near the War Memorial Pools in Onehunga. Subsequent enquiries found that a number of cars had been broken into on the day that the property was recovered from Jellicoe Park, and from these cars a number of handbags and other valuable items were stolen during these thefts. Unfortunately the majority of the property stolen is yet to be recovered, nonetheless the thief who stole the property from the cars used the victim’s stolen credit card to conduct a number of online purchases resulting in an address of interest to Police. From information obtained during this investigation, a search warrant was drawn up and executed by the Community Policing team at two known addresses associated to the thief who stole from the cars.

A number of police officers were involved in the execution of this search warrant with the hope that some of the stolen property would be recovered. Unfortunately Items stolen from the cars were not located at the addresses, however several thousand dollars’ worth of property was recovered relating to the online purchases by the thief. What was more concerning was the number of handbags that were stashed throughout this address. I would estimate at least 100 handbags of various brands such as Guess, Kardashian, and Calvin Klein just to name a few. There is no doubt that these bags were stolen from cars and were the proceeds of crime, however none of these hand bags had any identifying features that could link back to a victim of a crime. This is a problem that the New Zealand Police come up against on a daily basis. The locating of stolen property without being able to associate it back to a person or location of a crime.

In cases such as these, the only option for Police is to leave suspicious property with the criminal unless it can be proven to be stolen and can be linked to a specific victim. You can help the Police reduce crime and hold criminals accountable. Remove all property from your cars when they are unattended and ensure that you mark your valuable property and write your details on the inside of your hand bags. Hand bags are some of the most common items of property stolen from victims and vehicles, and once all bank cards, drivers licences and other forms of Identification have been removed, you are left with a hand bag that can be difficult for a victim to identify as theirs as there are a number of common brands currently sold within New Zealand and victims need to prove what actually belongs to them. This can be quite difficult with commonly sold items.

Ramadan Message - Asalam Alaikum Counties Manukau Police would like to extend best wishes for serenity, joy and abundant spiritual gifts to Muslim communities on the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the festive month during which Muslims around the globe reflect on and renew their faith. Muslims honour each day of Ramadan as a day of patient endurance through fasting, and each night as a night of gratitude through prayers New Zealand Police continues to engage Muslim communities around New Zealand and promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue. Ramadan and the Eid-ul-fitr are about celebrating and being with the families. Please be mindful that while we enjoy the occasion of Ramadan and Eid, some families may find it a challenging time to get through. Unfortunately, at this time conflict can arise within families for a number of reasons. A rise in cases notified to police can sometimes been seen which relate to domestic violence and family harm.

Family violence is often not limited to two people. We need to remember that our children are exposed to the harm when they are living in the same environment. Children are the silent witnesses and victims.

If you don’t feel comfortable talking with police, there are agencies you can talk to. Call the free 0800 Family Violence number on 0800 456 450 or visit their website www.areyouok.org.nz who can put you in touch with services in your region. If you are worried for a friend or family member that may be involved in an abusive relationship don’t stand back and do nothing. Call Police on 111 or contact one of the support agencies.

“ If you are living in a

violent relationship and you want help or support, do not let your culture be the barrier to seeking help. Counties Manukau Police is blessed to have diverse Police officers who speak multiple languages and have the cultural understanding about the community we serve.

I wish this Ramadan will infuse you with courage that will help you be triumphant over the adversities of life.

Local Stories Fasting in Ramadhan – Wisdom & Blessings Fasting is a religious practice which is full of wisdom while people often tend to look at its ritualistic aspect. Fasting as a form of worship found universally in the world religions. We know this fact in this day and age as the historical records are freely available in the book form. However, Almighty God revealed it to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (on whom be peace and blessings of Allah) 1,400 years ago. In the Holy Qur’an, Almighty God says:

“O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard against evil.” (2:184)

Although, among the religions, there are vast differences regarding the mode of fasting, the central idea of fasting is present everywhere which points to its profound wisdom. Fasting in Islam is a highly developed institution. There is one full month, Ramadhan, in every year in which fasting is prescribed for Muslims all over the world. As the month is a lunar month, so it keeps changing around the year in relation to the solar months. This creates a universal balance for the worshippers. Fasting in Islam begins everywhere at the first appearance of dawn, and ends with sunset. During this period one is expected to abstain from all food and drink completely. It is not just physical hunger and thirst that constitute the Muslim fast, but the nights prior to the beginning of the fast acquire a far more important character and play a central role in the institution of fasting. The Muslims wake up many hours before dawn for individual prayer and the remembrance of God. Also the Holy Quran is recited in every Muslim house much more than in ordinary days. A greater part of the night is thus spent in

Iftari evening delights Aucklanders Ahmadiyya Muslim Community New Zealand has organised an Iftari evening (Breaking the fast) at Baitul Muqeet Mosque on 26th May 2016. The Event has observed the participation of guest from various communities around Auckland. The evening was aimed to spread peace and harmony in the society by proclaiming the values and traditions of Islam. It gave a chance for Aucklanders to explore the rituals and customs of Islam. The event began with a short introduction by Bashir Ahamed Khan, National President of Ahamadiya Muslim Jama’at Zew Zealand followed by a brief presentation on the significance of 'Iftari' by Imam Mustenser Ahmed Qamar. The main aim of the event was to break all stereotypical notions about Islam and Muslim community. “ There are a lot of stereotypical assumptions about the community which have been created by the fanatics or the people who misinterpret the religion. We want to convey our guests that Islam is peace and the basic principle of Islam is love and brotherhood” Said Zafarullah, one of the organisers of the event to The Indian News. “ We have invited a lot of guests irrespective of their religion, culture and ethnicity since we love to foster brotherhood” he added

The evening has granted a golden possibility for the guests to explore Islam. “ I neither visited a mosque nor participated in an iftar eve, but this event has provided a great chance to explore both” Said Tony, one of the participants. Many of the community members were amused to invite their friends to the event. “ Many of my friends and colleagues have been asking me about the importance of fasting. Hence I have called them for this iftari event “ Said Tasleem, one of the members of the Ahmadiyya community. The major attraction of the event was the traditional Islamic cuisines which have been used to break the Ramadan fasting.

spiritual exercises which make up the very essence of fasting. During the day, apart from restraining from food and water, all Muslims are particularly exhorted from vain talk, quarrels and fights, or from any such occupation as is below the dignity of a true believer. No indulgence in carnal pleasure is allowed. In Islam, alms-giving and care for the destitute is so highly emphasised that it becomes part of a Muslim’s daily life. However when it comes to Ramadhan, the month of fasting, Muslims are required to redouble their efforts in this field.

Another great blessing of fasting, which further highlights the Divine wisdom behind it, is its health benefits. More and more medical research has proved how fasting is beneficial for human health – again a fact revealed by the Holy Prophet (on whom be peace and blessings) at a time when no mediacl research was avaiable. He is reported to have said:

Fast and you shall become healthier. By Imam Shafiq ur Rehman Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at

The institution of fasting is extremely important because it cultivates the believer in almost every area of his spiritual life. Among other things, he learns through personal experience about what hunger, poverty, loneliness and discomforts mean to the less fortunate sections of society. Abstention from even such practices during the month of Ramadhan as are permissible in everyday life plays a constructive role in refining the human character.

Politics Schools, homes, kids: a great plan in Budget 2018 The foundations for a better future have been laid by Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson this week as they unveiled the first Budget of the Coalition Government. We’re building an economy that delivers for everyone because we know that so many middle income earners’ wages haven’t kept up with living costs, and many low income earners are struggling to even pay for the basics for their kids or have a warm dry home to raise them in in. This Budget is about getting the balance right and ensuring we are prepared for future economic and environmental challenges. It’s great that the economy remains strong under the Coalition Government’s plan. Unemployment is forecast to drop to 4.1 percent in 2020, there will be 203,000 more jobs between December 2017 and June 2022, and GDP growth will average 3 percent. This makes our

labour market one of the strongest in the developed world. At the same time we are reducing debt and running a good surplus so we have extra for that rainy day when we need it. That’s the responsible thing to do. But this government’s mission is about more than just the economic picture. A great education and good healthcare sets us up for a great future. That’s the future we want so we’re prioritising investment in accessible modern healthcare, strong education services, as well as building warm, dry homes and developing our regions. We’re rebuilding our health system by investing an additional $3.2 billion for more doctors, nurses and improved treatments, as well as $750 million to fix our hospitals. We’re also delivering cheaper or free GP visits and medicines for 600,000 Kiwis.

better future. That’s why we’re increasing funding for early childhood education, providing 1,500 new teachers and hundreds of new, modern classrooms. We all want to see an end to homelessness. This Budget follows through on our promise to tackle the housing crisis head-on. We’re investing $2 billion in KiwiBuild to build the affordable homes people need. We’re also building 6,400 new state and community houses and providing 1,400 new emergency housing places. We’re looking forward to safer communities too as we work towards adding another 1,800 more police officers, bringing their services into the 21st Century with strengthened frontline services including community policing to cybercrime and fraud detection.

This Budget follows on from our announced Families Package that means 384,000 families will be better off by an average of $75 a week, and tens of thousands of children will be lifted out of poverty. Jacinda Ardern said she wants New Zealand to be the best country in the world to be a child. That’s such a great goal. I’m proud of our Government and the foundations we’re laying for New Zealand’s future. We’re doing things differently, transforming the economy so it works for people, not the other way around. That’s going to build us a future I’m energised and optimistic about. Today we have something to look forward to.

We’re making sure education provides children with the skills they need for a

Post-budget ethnic media briefing Michael Wood MP, Under-Secretary to the Minister of Ethnic Communities and MP for Mt Roskill had a Post Budget Ethnic Media briefing at a Breakfast Event at their new premises in Onehunga On Monday 21st May, 2018 Mr Wood discussed key Budget information of interest to Ethnic Communities and took questions over a breakfast session. Budget 2018 is focussed on building the foundations of a better and fairer New Zealand. There are major social and infrastructure deficits that we must address, and while we can’t do all of this work in one year we do have a plan, and this Budget sets out the first steps. Key points we covered in the briefing include:

Families Package The Families package was introduced in our mini-Budget just before Christmas and will come into effect from 1 July 2018. It represents the government’s alternative to the previously proposed tax cuts and includes: • Changes to Working for Families, meaning that 380,000 low-middle income families will on average be $75/week better off • A Winter Heating Allowance for all pensioners and beneficiaries to ensure that low income households keep warm and healthy over winter.

This will be $450 for a couple this winter and $750 in following winters • The Best Start payment of $60/week for families with a newborn baby (universal in year one and targeted in subsequent years)

Community Safety Delivering on the Labour/NZ First commitment to fund 1800 more police to keep our communities safer. These numbers will be split between community based police who will be highly visible in local areas and specialist police who will focus on organised crime, which is at the root of many of the violent attacks on shops we have seen in recent years.

Health A major investment ($3.2 billion of new funding) in the health sector, both for capital investment and to make access more affordable for families: • Capital funding to rectify failing and inadequate facilities such as Middlemore hospital • An 8.9% increase for community midwives • Cheaper or free GP visits for around 600,000 people. 13 year olds will now be eligible for free GP visits (previously only up to 12 years old) while other low and middle income earners will see doctors fees reduce by $20-$30.

Education Significant funding across the sector to cater for growth and support everyone’s right to a good education: • 1500 new teachers funded • Hundreds of new, modern classrooms • 8000 more children with added learning needs will get additional support including funding for 1000 new ORS students

Housing In addition to the Kiwibuild plan for 100,000 affordable homes for first home buyers over 10 years, Budget 2018 funds 6400 new state and community houses over the coming four years for lower income households who need a decent home. In discussion after the briefing we also talked about the introduction of the Research & Development tax credit. This 12.5% tax credit will be available to all kiwi businesses who invest in genuine research and development and is designed to boost economic development by bringing up our current very low private sector R&D spend. When fully implemented this will be a $300 million per year commitment. We also spoke about upcoming immigration policy changes which Minister Lees-Galloway will announce in the coming months, and the $520k

fund for migrant and refugee support administered by Ethnic Communities Minister Jenny Salesa that has been confirmed in the Budget. Finally, in a couple of interviews I was asked about Migrant worker exploitation. The Budget provides funding to double the number of Labour Inspectors to investigate and prosecute abuses, and Ministers Salesa and Lees-Galloway are working on a review of exploitation of migrant students and workers to fully understand the extent of the issue.

If you have any feedback or want to discuss issues, please get in touch with me or our team. Email: [email protected] or our ethnic communities team on [email protected]. Electoral office: 09 624 2278

A no plan and no strategy budget The Labour Government was gifted a once in a lifetime legacy by our National Government. The Labour Party’s gifts included a strong, prosperous and growing economy that was on track to improve the lives and livelihoods of our families. Unfortunately, the Labour leadership has decided it does not wish to capitalise on its gifts. Instead the Labour Party has decided that it is better to tax New Zealanders more, to spend and to spend more, borrow even more than they had promised before the general elections. Essentially the Labour Party is breaking all their promises in the hope that no one will notice. During our time in Government the Labour Party called everything a crises, yet their budget offers no new solutions to back their claims. National committed more funding to our

health budget year on year than Labour has for each year. Before elections they promised universal cheaper doctors’ visits, 1800 extra cops and a host of other things. Unfortunately for us New Zealanders their Budget is a host of broken promises. Another promise that they broke was introducing a number of new taxes, after saying there won’t be any new taxes in Labour Governments first term. Making promises is easy however, delivering on those promises that result in more police on our streets, more surgeries in our hospitals, and better education for our kids is the what New Zealander’s want and need to see. It is senseless to tax more and borrow more especially when we have one of the best performing economies in the developed world. All that the Labour Government has decided to do is undo the hard work done

by New Zealanders over last few years. Middle-income New Zealand is getting steadily worse off due to the cancellation of National’s tax changes and the upcoming increase in fuel taxes that will take petrol and diesel prices to record levels. The policies that this Labour Government has are anti- business and antigrowth. The National Party’s objective was to make our boat go faster while the Labour led Government’s approach is to drop the anchor. This is visible in their disappointing budget that has no plan and no strategy for New Zealand. Labour has realised they don’t have enough money to meet their excessive election commitments. It is a shame that ordinary New Zealanders will end up paying for their empty promises.

International News MH370 hunt to end next week US disinvites China from its military exercises The headquarters of the United States Department of Defense - The Pentagon on Wednesday disinvited China from participating in a major naval exercise, pointing towards the mounting anger in the country over Beijing’s expanded military footprint in disputed areas of the South China Sea.

The search for the ill-fated Malaysian Airlines MH370 plane will end on May 29, more than four years after it disappeared while carrying over 200 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Malaysia’s cabinet agreed to extend the hunt until May 29 to a request by Ocean Infinity, the American company which was operating the search. Malaysian Minister of Transport Anthony Loke SiewFook told reporters on Wednesday, in Kuala Lumpur, that there would be no more extensions after that, CNN reported. On Tuesday, Peter Foley and Greg Hood from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau told a parliamentary hearing

that the plane had likely crashed into the Indian Ocean after running out of fuel. Earlier, Australian investigators rubbished claims that the MH370’s disappearance was due to an accident. Australia, China and Malaysia, which led the initial massive search called it off in January last year after failing to find any trace of the plane within a 710,000-plus square kilometre area of the Indian Ocean. MH370 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people on board. The aircraft has not been recovered and the cause for the disappearance remains unknown.

According to The Washington Post, Lt. Col. Christopher Logan, a Pentagon spokesman, said that the Defense Department had withdrawn an earlier invitation to the Chinese navy to participate in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) drill. The drill, which is a biennial naval exercise, involves more than two dozen nations. Logan said that the resolution was taken over Beijing’s decision to place anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles and electronic jammers on the Spratly Islands. Spratly Islands, which China has enlarged and occupied in recent years, are subject to competing claims from several countries, including Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

“We believe these recent deployments and the continued militarisation of these features is a violation of the promise that President Xi [Jinping] made to the United States and the world,” The Washington Post quoted Logan as saying. The Pentagon, further said that China has landed bomber aircraft, apparently including the advanced, nuclearcapable H-6K, at Woody Island, which is another disputed area to the north claimed by Chinaand Vietnam. Meanwhile, the decision to exclude China from the exercise is likely to intensify tensions with a country the Pentagon has identified, along with Russia, as a chief rival to American military power and a focus of planning.

Real Estate The Real Estate Corner Nationally, the number of properties sold in the $500,000 to $750,000 bracket increased from 26.9% in April 2017 to 28.3% in April 2018. At the top end of the market, houses sold for more than $1 million decreased from 14.2% of the market in April 2017 to 13.8% of the market this year. It’s positive to see more sales in the more affordable price brackets. The number of properties sold in April 2018 across New Zealand increased by 6.6% compared to the same time last year, the highest year-on-year increase the real estate industry has seen in 23 months according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ). In April, 6,368 houses were sold across the country in comparison to 5,973 in April 2017. However, the number of properties sold in New Zealand excluding Auckland increased by 8.4% year-on-year ( from 4,163 in April 2017 to 4,514 in April 2018) due to the sales increase in the Auckland market being a more moderate 2.4% increase ( from 1,810 sales in April 2017 to 1,854 house sales in April 2018)

House prices across NZ continue to climb. The median house price for New Zealand rose 1.9% in April 2018 to $550,000 up from $540,000 in April 2017 and median prices for New Zealand excluding Auckland increased by 5.7% year-on-year to $460,000 – the exact same figure as the previous month. Median prices for Auckland decreased marginally by 0.6% to $850,000 (down from $855,000 in April 2017). The decrease in the median is due to the fact that the number of properties in the mid-range increased and the highend ones fell. The median number of days to sell a property nationally increased by 2 days from 34 days in April 2017 to 36 days in April 2018. This is 2 days more to sell a property than it took in March this year. Auckland saw the median days to sell a property increase by 2 days to 37 (up from 35 in April 2017) and the same number of days as in March 2018. Auctions were used in 13.2% of all sales across the country in April, with 843 properties selling under the hammer – this is down from April 2017, when 17.3% of properties were sold

via auction showing that auctions are becoming a less popular method of sale across the country. In Auckland, 436 properties (23.5%) were sold by auction in April 2018 compared to 559 properties (30.9%) in April 2017. A tip for sellers – As always, presentation is important. Scrutinise, go outside and open your front door. Stand there. Do you want to go inside? Does the house welcome you? Linger in the doorway of every single room and imagine how your house will look to a buyer. Examine carefully how furniture is arranged and move pieces around until it makes sense. Make sure curtains & drapes hang level. Tune in to the room’s statement and its emotional pull. Detach yourself from your home and look at it from a prospective buyer’s eyes.

Positive Changes For First Time Buyers April has seen initiatives from the government take shape for first home buyers, as well as a steady stable market. Here’s what’s been happening in Auckland Property:

The Foundations of Kiwi Build Begin to Take Shape The first 18 Kiwi Build houses have begun construction in South Auckland, the three to four-bedroom houses are part of an initiative by the government to build quality, affordable homes for first-time buyers. Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford talked about the project and how the process works, stating that “These first 18 homes will be ready for families in August. A ballot, open to first home buyers, to purchase these homes will be launched closer to that time”. The houses are being built on land formerly owned by the Defence Force between Takanini and Papakura, and Twyford hopes that by the end of the year 30 houses will have been built under the Kiwi Build initiative. Sales Slightly Up, Prices Slightly Down The total number of house sales has increased in April to 26,269, up 1.1 per cent from April 2017, but property experts believe that some uncertainty around changes to the law, especially

around foreign buyers are keeping some people at the side lines. Data from Barfoot & Thompson showed that Auckland’s median sale price dropped by $30,000 in the last month but suggest that Auckland’s housing market “may well have bottomed out” and are hopeful more prospective buyers will reenter the market once some of the new laws come into effect/become more clear. The bottoming out of the market and potential lowering of house prices could be good news for first-time buyers looking to enter the market. CoreLogic reported that first home buyers have increased their market share and that over $700M was withdrawn from Kiwi Saver for First Home Buyers “at an average of over $18K per account”. CoreLogic has also reported that banks have tightened their lending and are testing potential borrowers at a higher 7% interest rate when actual interest rates are balanced around 5%. With more first home buyers entering the market, it’s vital that you shop around and understand what assets you have, and what interest rates will best work for you.

Entering the property market for the first time can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be, working with an experienced mortgage broker can give you a valuable upper hand when navigating banks, and can save you from getting into more debt than you need to. Community The 25 years of glorious journey of

Who can stop the unstoppable! It has been a big ten weeks for The Indian News as we complete five issues and are ready to roll out our sixth one. There is a feeling of celebratory happiness mixed with sadness in the air as I write this editorial in place of our editor Yugal Parashar.

Bharatiya Mandir

Celebrations because we have been able to make our tabloid come across as an optimistic newspaper that delivers happiness. One reader told us that after he saw the headline about North and South Korea’s peace talks, he went to bed that night feeling a certain calmness and a feeling that the world still has hope. Sadness as we are bringing out our sixth issue without our editor Yugal Parashar’s presence as he is away in India to see his ailing mother. Her passing away after she spent her last few days with her son is an example of a mother’s pure love. On the day he was returning to New Zealand, she woke up, and the moment she sensed he was gone, she left peacefully for her heavenly abode. Since he had not reached the airport, he was able to come back as if everything was planned by an eternal power with clockwork precision. For a mother, what could be more thoughtful than this for her son. She was 90 and departed this world on the 24th of May. We pray for her soul to rest in peace. It is quite easy to be bogged down with a negative state of mind nowadays. We only need to switch on the news to find ourselves deflated and demoralised. We are here to contrary proof that people will come back to reading if we can bring a smile to their faces. The journey has not been easy. The entire team had to multi-task all the way From reporting, feature writing, digital marketing, photography, subbing, editing, covering events to publishing - you name it, and we did it. Perhaps that’s why the newspaper came out looking completely different with a fresh, exuberant appeal to it. But there were flip sides too, technical hardships, struggling with getting our website up and going, delayed campaigns and projects, advertisers being taken away, digital storytelling and print content troubles but nothing could slow us down. It did take a toll on the families, but we have to give special thanks to that unflinching support we had, not just from the spouses and children but also from the friends who stood by us like rocks and kept us going. I don’t know what we would do without those endless hot cups of chai, samosas, and pakoras that would find their way into the office as we worked non-stop day and night. Most importantly, we had the encouragement and support of the Nauhria family who had the faith, vision and trust in this newly formed team. We are a community tabloid where we share the stories of our seniors, our children, we also write about the achievers who have inspired us in our Par Excellence column, we review restaurants and provide food for the soul through our spirituality columns. Not to miss the fun and party page, featuring all those who liven up the city. It is heartening to know that it has also been a good journey for the New Zealand media industry at large. The recent Voyager Media Awards and the NZ Radio Awards reflected the scope of modern media. Now here’s the good news – we can all teach ourselves to become more optimistic. So, keep reading The Indian News and keep writing to us as we share our stories with you. We love getting feedback about what you as readers want and what you would like us to serve next, keeping it all fresh and flavoursome just as you like it !!! - Erum ali

Excavation and foundation

Special Feature

The site of building was overlaid by flow of hard basalt rock. Within the building platform area this rock was excavated out and the depth this excavation varied from zero to approximately 2.5 meters. All this rock removed by mechanical excavation.

Cladding to the building is a combination of reinforced concrete blockwalls, Rib lath plaster and reinforced concrete site assembled and finished. Two of the three external domes were hemispherical and the framing of these consisted of shaped laminated plywood ribs. To these ribs was fixed heavyweight building paper and rib lath plaster to form the specified finishes.

Once this area had been excavated then work commenced on the conventional foundation system of reinforced concrete stripe footings and pads. While this foundation work proceeded rock excavation continued for the drainage and the formation of the carpark areas. Superstructure The building generally consists of a lower ground floor being a reinforced concrete slab on grade, a reinforced concrete suspended ground floor, with a lightweight roof over all of which was constructed in a conventional manner. The suspended ground floor was constructed using a combination of precast prestressed slabs and insitu slabs supported on precast shell beams, insitu beams and reinforced concrete block walls. The main roof structure consisted of structural steel frames with timber purlins and lightweight roofing. The support “tower” for the main dome is constructed of reinforced concrete blockwalls topped with precast slabs. This slab is the support base for the main dome.

The third external dome was a specifically shaped structure standing approximately 8 meters high. In planning the construction of project, we made a decision to build this dome on the ground, complete all the specific finishes and then lift the completed dome up to its final location. This dome is constructed of a structural steel support frame, timber trusses, plywood and then finished in rib lath plaster. Our calculations showed that this structure had a completed weight of approximately 23 tonne and as a consequence we designed a structural steel lifting frame on which to construct the dome. Lifting lugs were fixed to the corners of this frame and when lifted the chains were fixed to these lugs and taken up through the centre of the dome and out through the hole at the top. The lift was undertaken on a clean fine day with many interested spectators looking on and was accomplished without any difficulties.

Spirituality Q&A with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Satsang yesterday (5th May 2018) at the Art of Living International Center, Bengaluru: Gurudev I see people look so happy even without doing yoga. Is it my illusion or is it their past life merits? Sri Sri: Why do you bother about others? You look into yourself. If you can be happy without anything, be happy and if you need to do whatever you need to do to be happy then do that. This analysis will not lead you to anywhere. Yes! Many people could be happy with their merits. Some may look happy but may not be really happy. Some are happy but may not appear to be happy. What is the point of you doing any research on it? If it is for any benefit then I am ok with that also. At least you be happy and do what you want to do.

Why is the tradition in India that woman has to go to stranger’s house and take care of his parents and not hers. This keeps bothering me. Sri Sri: Well you should have been born in Kerala or Tripura where there is a patriarchal society. But if the same question your husband ask you then why should I leave my house and go and stay in my wife’s house and take care of her parents? My dear! If you can take care of your people, you can take care of others also. Perhaps it is easier to take care of stranger than your own people.

Guruji! I used to get into bliss every time I used to meditate. After marriage and kids, it is not happening. What really went wrong? Sri Sri: Look! Do not blame marriage for this. There are people who are married and happy and there are people who are single and unhappy. Yes! There are responsibilities, challenges. In spite of all these responsibilities, you should take some time. And a baby is not active all the time. In fact, small babies sleep most of the time. When they sleep, you meditate. Who can stop?

Life is wonderful and this world is amazing but sometimes I feel all this is pointless. This feeling keeps coming back. What should I do? Sri Sri: Very Good! You are getting matured. You are getting dispassionate about everything. And when you see everything is pointless, this should give you more joy, not depression. If you see

everything is pointless and still you are happy and you want to continue doing it, then you are on the right track. Games are always pointless but games are played because games give you joy. What is the point of a man playing a ball and hitting it by bat here and there and wait for someone to throw again? Totally pointless. Waste of time. Here I totally agree with Bernard Shaw who says that Cricket is a game where eleven fools play and eleven thousand watches. Any game you take it. Watching any movie is even pointless. If you see in that angle, all games are pointless but we still play. Right! Life is also called a Leela! Ramleela is a game. Krishna Leela is a game and your Leela is a game.

In deep gratitude Gurudev! Just want to know what I can do for you? Sri Sri: I think you should keep this question and time to time you get different ideas for all that. Do seva, do sadhana, do satsang and work for all the projects. There are so many projects in Art of Living. We need many more such places where people can come and experience bliss and joy. We need lighthouses of happiness. You can create. You can be in the team. You can promote our books, tapes and knowledge and products you can promote them. In any way, you serve our society our world. Plant more trees, be part of river rejuvenation programs. Yuvacharya, village programs. If you want to do, there are so many projects. Think about it. Become a teacher, plan to be a teacher and if you are already a teacher then teach courses. At least once in a month.

Is it ok to be emotionally dependent on someone? Sri Sri: As a teenager, you should not think about emotional dependency. Both will put you in problem. If you think you are emotionally independent then it is not true because you are dependent on your parents, your friends. In this, if you try to be independent then you will come out to be a rebellious and arrogant person. On the other hand, if you think you are emotionally dependent on everybody then you become too mushy-mushy and at the drop of a head you start crying and throwing tantrums and all unnecessary and unfruitful drama will happen which nobody will like to watch. So teenage is the age when you are just developing your emotions. This is a time to focus on your studies and develop skills.

Why do parents love the younger one more?

How do I handle my fear of exams, people and failure?

Sri Sri: Because they need little more attention. They had loved you when you were young too. You should know. You are able to walk and younger one need little more care and support. When you are not well, they take care of you one hundred percent. So you do not know their love. It is equal to both of you. I tell you they love you both the same. There is a difference in love and attention. Love is same for all but attention; if someone needs it then he gets it. Attention is time and situation bound but love is beyond that.

Sri Sri: Failure in exam. Never mind. If you fail in exam. So what. It is only by chance people fail. There are many great achievers on the planet who have failed many times. A great physicist failed in physics in his class many times. So don’t be upset if you happened to be failed. It gives you a chance to study your subject in more depth and with more attention. Take it that way. Don’t worry about people. Meditation and Yoga will help. You are one of the parts of people.

The vastness of the universe does not indicate the littleness of man: on the contrary it offsets his greatness of spirit that tries to take it in and finds means to unravel its mysteries. - Vijay Paul Bhandari

Par Excellence Dr. Sangeeta Karmokar

A beacon of hope Founder and chief executive of Women Entrpreneurship Centre, Dr. Sangeeta Karmokar, a recipient of the Office of Ethnic Comunities, Ethnic Development Funding scheme, believes there is a huge untapped potential among refugee and migrant women who can develop as successful business leaders. She believes in the principle of empowering, developing and connecting aspiring women entrepreneurs. Dr. Sangeeta has been an integral part of education, research and community engagement. Her practice-based research interest lies at the intersection of the entrepreneurship and design discipline with a special interest in women entrepreneurship and working

with community. She is passionate about key issues that women entrepreneurs are facing in a highly challenging globalised economy like ethnic diversity, equal pay, gender equality. Dr. Sangeeta Karmokar, also a lecturer at Auckland University of Technology believes that while various business accelerator programmes are available from the government and the private sector, women at the grassroots level need proper coaching, mentoring and opportunities for growth in business. She is aware that despite capabilities and great ideas, many women are generally restricted in their progress due to lack of confidence, inadequate information and support.

“I may sometimes be willing to teach for nothing, but if paid at all, I shall never do a man’s work for less than a man’s pay.” Clara Barton

Founder of American Red Cross

It is not just about those women who are already on the boards of companies and in leadership roles, but also about women who have shown promise and the willingness to develop as business leaders. Our vision is to build women as entrepreneurial leaders

- Dr. Sangeeta

Women Entrepreneurship Centre is a not-for-profit organization based in Auckland, New Zealand working towards empowerment of women through inspiring, educating and entrepreneurial leadership. WEC’s process in entrepreneurship and leadership involves awareness programs, trainings, skills development, mentoring, business incubation, information sharing and networking and marketing assistance. The Women Entrepreneurship Centre (WEC), provides a platform

that helps women entrepreneurs to reach their full potential to develop as business leaders. The Centre has innovative education programmes, events, and workshops to support women entrepreneurs. and develop creative thinking in their business ventures. The workshop participants learnt how to write business proposals; apply digital innovation; develop entrepreneurial strategy as well as exploring ways to prototyping and testing using different tools and techniques. We will be running five more workshops by the end of the year. The projects: They started their first project named “Live your dream” in 2017. Live your dream is a program for potential women entrepreneurs aspiring to start their own business enterprise. It helps the prospective entrepreneurs to introspect their strengths and weaknesses, encourages them to develop specific skills and knowledge that will maximize their community organization’s potential, develop their skills, and improve their performance. Dr Sangeeta added saying, “We had participants for our workshops from diverse ethnicity. Each had their own unique talent and passion”. Since all the workshops were very successful with positive feedback and anticipating for more workshops, they decided to start the 2nd batch (Live your dream 2018-For mumpreneurs). Community Connect: They have two categories under community connect: Youth and kids. The main objective of Community Connect youth is helping them to discover, express and develop their unique creativity. It includes goal setting, action plans and reflection statements.

It creates space for youth to engage in own career development process, awareness of future employment, careers and entrepreneur options. The program is a mix of three meetups with the main aim of discover, express and develop. The first set of workshop was done in collaboration with Lynnfield YMCA on June 2017 and the second set of workshop was done in collaboration with Kelston Girls College on August 2017. Mom Dad and me : Under community connect kids they are conducting a short creative art workshop for kids titled “Mom Dad and me” on June 16th 2018. The program includes handson-activities on how to use art materials in a creative and fun way while having a special time with mum or dad. This year she is planning to launch Co-Inspire which is a unique platform that allows women to network, share ideas, learn something new, and market/sell their products and many more things. “It’s difficult for women to start and run a business while juggling with family, kids, limited time, limited resources and limited funding. That is why we created this platform to help women learn, share, grow and inspire others to succeed. Our main activities under this brand would be to have networking events and marketing/selling”, says Dr Sangeeta.

Under networking events they are also planning to organise one event every 2 months to help women come together, meet like-minded women, learn something new through their informative sessions and share ideas. Under marketing and selling they give women in small business, an opportunity to market/sell their products to the members of We-Inspire. We can proudly say that Dr Sangeeta and her women entrepreneur centre dedicated to developing ethnic women as successful business leaders is becoming a beacon of hope for many, in Auckland. The world needs more such global leaders who can work for the collective good of humanity.

As of May 2018, there are 24 female CEOs on the List of leading Fortune 500 companies - or just under 5% of the total list. At the moment, just two names on the list are women of color: Geisha Williams of PG&E Corp and Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo. Maybe it’s time for global leaders to rethink…

SHAHI Indian. Inspired

Shahi delivers acclaimed modern Indian cuisine as chic as its location in Central Remeura where you will enjoy fresh, delicious food infused with the flavours of the North Indian sub-continent. Since 1989, Shahi has been at the forefront of the Indian food scene in Auckland. Renowned for their consistent, outstanding food and professional service, all their meals are prepared in the open kitchens. The diners can see the action, enjoy the aroma of tandoori and grilled platters wafting in the air and feel the energy of the talented chefs – enough to build up a good appetite. The A la Carte menu is available with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The curries are simmered slowly over several hours and all tandoori dishes are marinated overnight to ensure

the meat is tender and infused with maximum flavour. Guests can try dishes ranging from Garlic Prawn also called the fat buster on the menu, with Rogan Josh – chefs speciality, Shahi Cigar – politically incorrect but delectable to the exquisite Punjabi lamb robust. For butter chicken - the most popular dish, you can choose whether you would like it mild, medium or as we do in India – extra spicy! For the vegetarians there is delicious and mouth-watering smooth and mild blend of Saag with paneer, Tadka Dal – staple food and a special vegan curry too. Accompaniment

highly recommended with curries is their sweet mango chutney and the mint chutney. Finally, for the mango lovers is the Mango Lassi. The dessert that is simply irresistible is the Mango Kulfi – Indian ice cream with mango topping – the perfect conclusion to a wonderful dining experience at Shahi.

EU felicitates Big B with Citation Rajnikanth poses like a king in new ‘Kaala’ poster The European Union on Friday felicitated veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan with a Citation.

Thalaiva Rajnikanth’s upcoming gangster movie ‘Kaala’ is out with another poster.

Amitabh took to his blog on Friday night to share a few photographs from the Europe Day celebration in Mumbai. “A decoration again. From the EU, the European Union on Europe Day celebration, to felicitate me with a Citation. Humbling and gratified,” Amitabh wrote. “Such is the nature of these events that are most humbling and filled with gratitude. It makes me want to run away from it all, but certain obligations need to be accepted. And so I did,” he added. Amitabh was joined by his daughter Shweta Nanda at the event. “Far too much attention is given and I find it difficult to digest or accept what is written and said. I am least deserving, and most unworthy of such, but they insist and I comply. But EU is a robust institution and

The poster features Rajnikanth in an amusing look, sitting on a car. Film critic and trade analyst, Taran Adarsh revealed the poster.

The EU Ambassador to India, Tomasz Kozlowski, also took to Twitter to thank Amitabh for gracing the event. “Thank you shri Amitabh Bachchan for being Guest of Honour at Europe Day in Mumbai! It was occasion to facilitate Mr Bachchan for his artistic achievements and extraordinary contribution to building cultural bridges between Europe and India,” he tweeted

Ekta Kapoor

Producer Ekta Kapoor, who is backing the Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor starrer ‘Veere Di Wedding’, says she is super proud to be a part of the film, which she feels will be remembered for a long time. “Ok the time has come to say this! ‘Veere Di Wedding is about to release and it’s important to say this before the release. Outcomes define our memories! Film does well we remember it fondly... Don’t we conveniently erase the memory or call it a mistake,” Ekta tweeted on Wednesday.

Priyanka Chopra visits Rohingya refugee camps

Priyanka on Monday took to Twitter to share a photograph of herself from an aircraft looking out of the window.

‘Kaala’ also features Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar and Anjali Patil in pivotal roles. Directed by Pa Ranjith and produced by Rajnikanth’s son in law, Dhanush, the movie is slated to release on June 7.

Eid feast for Salman fans with Jacqueline in ‘Race 3’ Produced by Salman Khan Films and Ramesh Taurani under the banner of Tips Films, ‘Race 3’ is directed by Remo D’souza and will hit theatres on Eid this year. Disney Studios announced on Thursday that the third “Avengers” film has minted 1.686 billion dollars at the box office worldwide after 20 days of release, reported Variety.

Co-directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film features a massive ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Zoe Saldana and Chris Pratt.

Earlier, “Avengers: Infinity War” became the fastest film to hit the $1 billion worldwide mark, needing only 11 days to do so. It reached the milestone one day earlier than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Hollywood star Morgan Freeman has issued an apology statement after finding himself amidst the sexual misconduct allegations made by as many as eight women. In the brief statement, the 80-year-old actor said, “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy. I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected - that was never my intent”, according to the Deadline. The God of ‘Bruce Almighty’ landed himself in the soup when CNN reported on his inappropriate behaviour towards the female members of his films’ crew and backstage attendants for his film’s promotional events.

It now trails only three titles at the alltime worldwide box office - “Avatar” with $2.79 billion, “Titanic” with $2.19 billion and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $2.07 billion.

Hockey India names 48 players for Sr. women’s national camp

ICC prohibits wearing smart watches on field

Hockey India on Saturday named 48-member team for the senior women’s national camp, beginning May 28 at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Bengaluru.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday prohibited players and match officials to use communication devices, including smart watches which are in any way connected to a phone or WIFI, on the field as well as in the dressing room.

After ending their 5th Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Campaign with a silver medal, the Indian team will regroup for the training camp under chief coach Sjoerd Marijne ahead of Spain Tour and the prestigious FIH Women’s World Cup in London. The team will make use of this short preparatory camp that concludes on June 9 to assess their performance and work on their shortcomings ahead of the Spain tour that begins on June 10. “We will use this camp to further improve our fitness and evaluate the Asian Champions Trophy performance. We will also continue to work closely with the psychologist to improve the mental skills both individually and the team,” stated Marijne.

The present national campers list includes goalkeepers Savita, Rajani Etimarpu, Swati, Chanchal, Sonal Minj and Jaspreet Kaur. Defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Sunita Lakra, Sushila Chanu Phukhrambam, Gurjit Kaur, Rashmita Minz, Suman Devi Thoudam, Deepika, Neelu Dadiya, Mahima Choudhary, Kanika Raj, Manmeet Kaur, S.P. Kruthika, Nisha have been called up for the camp. “The girls have played quite a lot of matches over the past two months and we need to be careful with their work load to ensure they are fresh mentally and physically,” stated Marijne.

The ICC confirmed that under the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) Regulations, smart watchesare not permitted to be worn on the field and in areas designated as PMOA.

mobile devices on arrival at the ground on match days,” the statement added. The ICC’s decision comes after it was learnt that some of the Pakistan players were spotted wearing smart watches while fielding during the ongoing opening Test of the two-match series at Lord’s.

“Communications devices are prohibited within the PMOA and no player is allowed to be in possession of or use a communications device which is connected to the internet whilst there,” the ICC release said. “Smart watches in any way connected to a phone or WI-FI or in any way capable of receiving communications are not allowed and as such we will be reminding players that such devices must be surrendered along with their

Confident of performing well in Asian Games, says Sushil Kumar Star wrestler Wrestler Sushil Kumar on Saturday said that he is confident to

perform well in the 2018 Asian Games, which will begin in August in Indonesia. “I need blessings of the entire nation to repeat the feat of the Commonwealth Games in the Asian Games. It is not possible to win without the support and prayers of the entire country. I want to stay fit and do well,” Kumar told ANI. The two-time Olympic medallist also added that with the support of the local governments and authorities, players are able to prepare well for

international tours and that the young Indian contingent is capable of performing well overseas.

He, however, maintained that at the end of the day, both winning and losing is part and parcel of the game.

“Every country prepares for different games in a different manner. And I believe that we will do well as a unit in the Asian Games. The aim of the younger generation - be it the Asian Games, the Olympics, or the Commonwealth Games is to win a medal for the country and that in itself is commendable,” Kumar added.

“Everybody gives a close fight and gives their best. Ultimately it is a sport and anything can happen in sports,” he said. The 2018 Asian Games is scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September and will see a participation from all 45 members of the Olympic Council of Asia.
