SLIDELL — The 142-year-old bronze bell is missing from St. Genevieve Catholic Church, heavily damaged during HurricaneAdvertisements Katrina. The 2-foot by 2-foot bell belonging to St. Genevieve Catholic Church was cast in bronze and has “St. Peter” inscribed on its outer ring. St. Tammany Parish sheriff’s deputies are seeking the public’s help in locating the bell, which was noticed missing earlier this month. Church Deacon Dan Haggerty estimated that the bell weighs between 300 and 400 pounds, and that two or three “good-sized men” would be needed to carry it off. The church on La. 443 near Bayou Liberty Road in Slidell was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and is scheduled to be demolished. Haggerty said the last time anyone remembers seeing the bell was six months after Katrina struck. The damaged church was open. “Somebody figured it was theirs for the taking,” Haggerty said. He said the bell had sat in the church sacristy for at least five years, as long as he has been a parishioner. The sacristy is a room where vestments, sacred vessels and other important church items are usually kept. Haggerty said the church steeple where the bell originally hung had been damaged at some point in the past, causing St. Genevieve Church to switch to electronic recordings of church bells. Haggerty said church leaders were planning to use the bell in a new church. Anyone with information about the bell’s whereabouts are asked to call sheriff’s Detective Corey Crowe at (985) 645-2447.
