THE VINTAGE FASHION FAIR Do you like fashion? High fashion is, of course, incredibly expensive. But one solution is very popular today. It is called Vintage Fashion. This month in London you can attend the Vintage Fashion Fair at Cecil Sharp House on Primrose Hill, on March 17th. DEFINITIONS What exactly is vintage fashion? It is really a term for old or second-hand clothes. “Antique clothes” are clothes from before the 1920s. “Vintage clothes” are clothes from the 1920s to the 1960s. Why is vintage fashion so popular today? The first reason is probably nostalgia, but the second one is the current financial crisis. Everyone wants to save money, and vintage fashion is perfect for this. You can find beautiful “new” dresses at low prices. TRENDY Vintage fashion has also become trendy, thanks to celebrity models like Kate Moss. Actresses like Sienna Miller and Julia Roberts have worn vintage dresses on the red carpet. But these vintage dresses, from designers such as Valentino and Coco Chanel, are not cheap: they can cost more than £1,000 (one thousand pounds). TV series like Mad Men and Pan Am have also made 1950s vintage dresses very popular. A QUESTION OF STYLE What can you find at a vintage fashion fair? Look out for dresses in the 1920s “flapper” style, glamour from the 1950s and modern classics from 1960s. There is also wide variety of accessories, including hats, shoes, gloves and jewellery. Matthew Adams organises Frock me! – another popular vintage fashion fair. He says the shows give you a chance to spot stylists, models, fashionistas and film stars. Price start at a few pounds, so there is something for everyone. Collectors will pay a lot more. The value of vintage clothes depends not only on the designer, but also on who wore the dress and on what occasion.
