The clans are gathering to the sound of pipes for the Jamestown Regional Celtic Festival next Saturday on August 22. Six pipe bands from the tri-state area will play well-known tunes separately and as a single massed band at the Jamestown Community College Campus. The festival was started four years ago, and is similar to the highland games, minus the competition aspect. “We didn’t want a competition, we just wanted time for the bands to play,” said Doug Clark, a member of the 96th Highlander Pipes and Drums which hosts the festival. Six pipe and drum bands, and seven clans are attending the festival this year. Each of the bands will perform individually throughout the day and in the afternoon and evening. Throughout the festival, they will also play as massed bands. SEE CELTIC PAGE 3

BY JON THOMAS When the lights go up on the SE93’s Chautauqua Lake Idol they will be shining on some superb local talent. Shawn Wilder, Kira Chadwick, and Steve Davis will be living out a dream shared by more people than some would care to admit. The contest started six years ago in conjunction with the Bemus Bay Pops concerts and in part due to the popularity of the American Idol TV show. “It made sense for us to celebrate the grand entrance of the floating stage at Bemus Point with

Skate Chautauqua This Weekend’s Regional Figure Skating Championship Hits JSB Ice Arena Jamestown’s Landmark Figure Skating Competition to be Held This Weekend Jamestown’s landmark figure skating competition Skate Chautauqua will be held this weekend, August 14-15, 2009 at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. This is the annual event that has given Jamestown a stellar reputation for producing figure skating events. Skate Chautauqua has presented countless National Champions, National Medalists, International Medalists, World and Olympic competitors. Sarah Hughes, 2002 Olympic Champion skated to victory at Skate Chautauqua in 1997 and always says that Jamestown is where her ‘winning streak’ began. Miki Ando, 2007 World Champion, won gold medals at Skate Chautauqua just 3 years ago in 2005. Kimmie Meissner, 2006 World Champion, skated to gold medals at Skate Chautauqua in 2002 and Jennifer Kirk, the 2000 Junior World Champion was a winner in Jamestown in 1998. Who will you see August 14 & 15 at the JSB Ice Arena? You never know! Can you pick the next Olympic Champion from the line up? It’s quite likely a champion will again skate here this year. Skate Chautauqua has been the catalyst that has allowed Jamestown Skating Club and Jamestown to win the bids to present the 2005 U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships and the 2009, 2007 and 2004 North Atlantic Regional Figure Skating Championships. All of this greatly contributes to the economic

development of the Jamestown/ Chautauqua area – and Skate Chautauqua is proud to make these major contributions to the community. The Skating Academy and Jamestown Skating Club have given Jamestown a reputation for presenting the highest level amateur figure skating events in United States, and as a result have introduced thousands of visitors to Jamestown. The prestige of Skate Chautauqua can be attributed to the support of the Jamestown community and volunteers. Great opportunities are created for skaters at Skate Chautauqua to be presented in a professional atmosphere, be critiqued by World and International judges, and have valuable interaction between coaches, judges, and skaters. The public is welcome to attend Skate Chautauqua. This year, compliments of Chautauqua Ice and Jamestown
Savings Bank Ice Arena, admission to all Skate Chautauqua events is free. Competition will be held continuously on Friday August 14 (8am-9pm) and Saturday August 15 (8am-8pm). Of special interest will be the IJS (new judging system) events which will be held in Rink A both Friday and Saturday with some of the top US and International skaters. The IJS events will be followed by ‘on ice’ critiques by the National and World Judges and Technical Specialists. Skate Chautauqua is presented by Chautauqua Ice and is sponsored by Quality Markets, The Post Journal, Alstar EMS, Warren Times Observer and WKSN. Publisher’s Word Summer in Chautauqua It’s the middle of August and the living is easy! Perhaps ‘relaxing’ would be a better choice of words, as life here really starts to slow down to a nice little pace about this time of year. Perhaps it’s the weather, or the water, or the happy people who are just so darned glad to be here. But one thing’s for sure – if you’re living or visiting Chautauqua County right now, you are one fortunate individual! After all, we’re blessed with beautiful lakes, gorgeous grapes, wonderful
wineries and more culinary opportunities than you can possibly tackle in one summer of overeating. Chautauqua’s cultural events are quite literally second to none, and the resort centers available to us are truly amazing. But we try to experience it all anyway, don’t we? Well, that’s totally understandable. Just remember to have fun, be nice to those who serve you and take deep breaths of the clean, crisp air. It’s just good for your soul! Until next week… JZ-B

Celtic CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE “They’ll come out as individual units and then play two tunes together,” Clark said. The morning massed band will play the tunes “Scotland the Brave and Wings” and “Bonnie Dundee.” The clans will be introduced during the massed band and led off the field by a solo piper. “We’re trying something new,” Clark said about the evening massed band. The units will march onto the field individually, then gather in a semicircle to play two sets of tunes (“Green Hills & Battle’s Ore” followed by “Amazing Grace”).
The massed bands are an impressive site and sound, Clark said. “We get about 100 pipers. It’s pretty cool.” Although the pipe bands are the focus of the festival, they aren’t the only part. Celtic themed food and vendors will round out the festival, along with area Celtic music and dance groups. The Anita Mountain Highland Dancers, from Erie, PA, and the Olean Area Irish Dancers, from Olean, NY, will perform, along with the music groups Step In Time and Celtic Creek. Both groups are area husband and wife teams. Step In Time brand their music as “Celtic Eclectic” while Celtic Creek works to keep the traditional Celtic styles alive. The festival also includes Scottish heavy athletics, such
as the caber toss (tossing a long, tapered pine log), hammer and stone throw. Although the pipe bands won’t be competing at the festival, the heavy athletes will be. “They’re not just amateurs,” Clark said, “these athletes are competing for prizes.” Jamestown is home of The 96th Highlanders Pipes and Drums, and they represent Chautauqua county, but the band includes members from surrounding areas. They have competed and performed at highland games and festivals in New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada. The band has used many of their performances to raise money for the families of firefighters, police, and members of the military as well as victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Idol CONT. FROM FRONT PAGE of eliminations. After giving the first contestants a week without eliminations to work out their jitters, and rehearse some songs the competition started with performances and eliminations every Monday night at the Pops concert location on Bemus Bay. As the competition has gone on contestants have had to perform up to ten songs over the summer. The performance nights were organized around musical themes, constants had to work up songs from: the Beatles, to Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as country, and classic rock. The judges made comments to the singers and those are not eliminated went on to perform the following week. For the most part the judges keep their comments to constructive criticism, unlike on that TV show, says Andrew, “Do we have a Simon Cowell per say? No!” In talking to finalist Shawn Wilder, his enthusiasm almost jumps through the phone,
“I’ve had so much fun! I’m so happy I’ve gotten this far.” He goes on, “You have no idea the feeling, you know, of being up there in front of everybody, when everybody is watching you and your singing with the band…it’s just overwhelming.” The performers chose an appropriate for the week and send a copy to John Cross and the Babalu Band (the Idol performance band). They are then given just two runthroughs of the song with the band on performance night. While this might intimidate another singer Shawn seems to thrive on it, saying of the band, “Oh man, they’re amazing! They’re wonderful guys. They have fun right along with you. They make your song theirs and you make their song yours…It’s awesome!” Shawn admits that some of the music themes put him out of his country music comfort zone, but he appears to have handled them well. Shawn sees himself pursuing a career in country western music and is considering moving to Nashville.
Another of the finalists is Kira Chadwick, who is no stranger to performing, having done numerous musical theatre performances in the area. She, like Shawn seems to be having a blast, “I’m just so happy and thrilled that I made it to the final three!” Unlike Shawn, Kira seems to be happy singing just about anything, “I like a little hiphop, a little country, I love classic rock, I like anything…I love show tunes.” But singing is not in Kira’s career path, as she plans to be a kindergarten teacher. Rather than be competitive the finalists appear to become good friends, Kira, her boyfriend and Shawn have been known to go out and sing karaoke together, and both speak highly of each other and Steve Davis (I was unable to contact Steve before publication). No matter what happens on Monday night those that don’t win are sure to be thrilled for the winner. No matter what career path the contestants choose, SE93’s Chautauqua Lake Idol will give audiences a glimpse of future greatness.

Garden Gone Wild It’s Lily Time in Lindaland: Stalking, Deadheading, Pruning and Raking is Garden Consultant Linda Yates’ Passion BY LINDA YATES Hey! It’s Showtime in Lily land! The summer show has finally arrived despite the unseasonal and exceptionally rainy weather. The gardens are aglow with colour even though it’s overcast. Quick, run out, a bit of sun! We don’t want to miss a thing right now. It’s an incredible palette of every conceivable colour and texture so amazing that I cannot take my eyes off of the scenery. It’s Lily time in Lindaland I call it. It is my happy place no matter what the work load. Staking, deadheading, pruning or raking, it is my joy and passion here. The chores give time to enjoy the flowers, to hang out with the fragrances, to take time out from the human race and mingle with Mother Nature for a while. The rewards are greater than I ever expected.
It is a gardener’s dreamland of discovery and delight. It IS a big show with a new trick around every corner. Forgotten flower friends return each year to greet me, new friends surprise me; all rise to the occasion of Show time! ‘The Queen has arrived’, the Queen of the gardens that is. The show offs and the unmistakable beauties are here. I tag this title to the Oriental fragrant tall lilies, especially the pure white Casa Blanca. They have their schedule and show up for their yearly debut. “We’re here” they proclaim all fresh and smelling sweet. So I run out and take photos of them promptly before they have their freshness washed by the unending rain. There are so many different varieties and colors and being a Lilium collector there are a few here. Let’s take a tour and see what we encounter. First, a huge
white Oriental with outward facing petals with tiny maroon speckles. Next we see a yellow star, a Citronella Strain, speckled with black spots, 5 feet in height. Moving along there is a famous tiger lily from the far east long known as L.tigrinum, a Turk’s-cap flower who is orange with dark purple spotting and 7 feet tall. The lilies are accompanied by many other blooming perennials, especially lots of day lilies, phlox and monarda. There is a lovely tall stand of Black Beauties who bear distinctive blooms of deep maroon-red with a narrow white edge, green star center and long protruding anthers, it’s petals tightly reflexed. It is nearly shrub-like and longlived and multiplies readily by offsets. It’s a winner! Here are a half dozen-brandy new pink 5-foot tall oriental’s that just opened today and
are looking so fresh. They have a backdrop of clear pink hollyhocks and purplish-pink monarda, so sweet! Through the arbor we have some Stargazers mingling with tall pink anemones robustissimus and every shade of phlox and purple-pink coneflowers. Moving away from the house and the sun gardens we call them, we have in the Dawn Redwood bed the oversized O.T. (Oriental-Trumpet hybrids) topping out at nine feet tall with a dozen blooms of the palest yellow waxy flower and so highly fragrant as to perfume the entire yard. It’s undoubtedly the perfect compliment. At the Moon Garden the stately all white Casa Blancas and Lilium auratum reside alongside lots of shasta daisies, white phlox, false dragonhead, lobelia and cleomes. Earlier there are tall white Trumpet lilies and later
there will be the ultimate and last to bloom Speciosum lilies. Speciosum translated means “good looking,” “showy,” “splendid” and “brilliant,” all aptly describing what many consider to be the most beautiful of all Oriental lily species. They actually are the last to bloom in late August and early September. Such a treat. I call them white butterflies. Elsewhere in the gardens is every colour in the spectrum. All blending beautifully, all happy together. Behind the formal garden the royal purple Gypsy Queen clematis and the Lavender-blue General Sikorski clematis are reblooming. Well gardening friends, another huge rainstorm has blown in and toppled lots of nice specimen plants which is very disheartening because we have waited an entire year for these plants to bloom.
Some staking is in order and it is still very wet and today unusually murky and muggy. A not fun situation for garden chores. We seem to be between a rock and a hard place with our green thumb endeavors lately. It’s too wet, rainy, sultry whatever. Oh well, like housework it can wait till later. Let’s have lemonade and just look at the gardens for a change; enjoy the colours and shapes and textures. Enjoy the moment because that is all that is guaranteed. And know that Showtime will also fleet. Let’s take it all in every chance we get; take pictures, make notes and sketches and journals. It’ll be a marvelous read in the OFF-season. Linda Yates is a garden consultant who also gives tours or her own spectacular property. She can be contacted at 716-4832668.

Architectural Digest Of Chautauqua Living Large in a Lakeside Condo, the Falcon’s Club Offers Too Many Amenities to List BY IAN BIGGS The Falcon’s Club is a new development by a father and son team which is just in the finishing stages of the first set of condos that have been revamped. The Falcon’s Club, formerly the Falcon’s Nest, sits down a long swooping drive to unobstructed views of Chautauqua Lake. The refurbished and updated condos are some of the largest on the lake. On the expansive grounds, the new tennis court is already in place; soon the rest of the grounds will be landscaped to “golf courselike” presence, according to Donna Breen of Century 21 Turner Brokers. Additionally, a basketball court for the use of the condo owners has also been recently completed. The owners are in the golf course business and use this background and knowledge in revamping the new landscape design. This gorgeous piece of property sits on six hundred
feet of lakefront, with dock in place. The project will ultimately house 16 condos and a few small cottages. There’s lots of space to play, both inside and out. Children will find the site particularly appealing what with lots of room for a football game right on the lake. The townhomes are on the Southside of the lake and take advantage of the spectacular sunsets that Chautauqua Lake has to offer. “When finished, it’s going to be a fantastic place” said Breen. “the condos are large and the amenities are amazing” she said. They afford the owners privacy and ease of maintenance. While homes require maintenance and constant upkeep, owning a condo gives the owner the freedom to come and go without having to worry about mowing the lawn or trimming the hedges. The condominiums are being fully refurbished and include hickory floors, granite counter tops in the kitchen and bathrooms, high ceilings and
an abundance of space for the growing family. Each unit is between 2,700 and 3,500 feet, giving the homeowners ample space to lounge. The condos of the Falcon’s Club Townhomes are really large by other standards on the lake. One doesn’t feel claustrophobic as you do in many of the lake’s townhomes. Also, the views are amazing, looking over the lawn and onto the lake beyond. Each unit has a two-car garage, three bedrooms and two full baths. They also have upstairs and downstairs washer and dryer facilities, which makes things very convenient for the homeowner. All the homes are three stories, with the first floor including a rec/media room and garage. One can picture curling up with some popcorn and having the surround sound filling the room, watching a good movie on a projection screen. Upstairs contains an open floor plan in the ‘great room’ style, which is ideal for entertaining with the
kitchen flowing directly into the living area. A fireplace completes the coziness of the living room. Upstairs boasts vaulted ceilings and skylights above and the sumptuous carpet below your feet. The generously sized master has two large closets and a well finished master bath with dual shower heads and glass enclosure. The additional bedrooms are large and airy and have been painted with rich colors. Fixtures are high end as is the quality of the finish. The condos sat empty for sometime, but now they are being updated to their former glory. The Falcon’s Club is located just west of the Viking Trader on the lake’s Southside. For the family looking for ease of living, and a large amount of breathing room right on the lake, these lakeside condo’s are a good investment. With lots of room to play, how can you go wrong? Night Lights At The Heron John & Mary Formally of the 10,000 Maniacs Entertain this Weekend at the Blue Heron Festival Grounds in Sherman BY JEFF BAINES The site of the Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman, NY is now home to Chautauqua County’s newest eco-tourism attraction: Night Lights at The Heron. Night Lights at The Heron is a unique outdoor light show attraction that is set throughout the forests and ponds of the Blue Heron Festival grounds where guests walk through a forest on a series of paths that is transformed at night with light and sound installations. The installation uses different colors and tones inspired by nature. Open on Friday and Saturday nights only, Night Lights made
its debut on July 31st and will close on Saturday, October 3rd. The attraction opens at dusk and closes at 11:00 p.m. You can visit their website at www.heronnightlights.com. Night Lights is located at 2361 Wait Corners Road in Sherman, NY. This one-of-akind experience is an unguided walk (bring a flashlight) that takes about 45 minutes and visitors are encouraged to walk the trails as many times as they would like. Visitors start their walk by a small pond that is illuminated with numerous colored lights, including some that change colors. The trail then enters the forest via a very smooth trail. There are benches throughout
the trails, in which visitors are encouraged to sit, relax and enjoy seeing the forest in a different light. Some installations contain music. The trail eventually brings you to a cozy little café in the woods, where sometimes you will find a musician or instrumentalist entertaining the crowd. There are picnic benches available and cookies and coffee served inside the café. This Saturday, August 15th, folk-rock duo, John and Mary play at the café. More entertainment is expected to be announced in the next week. Night Lights at The Heron was created by Doug Sitler and Anna Shaffer (of Buffalo),
alongside Julie and Steve Rockcastle owners of the Great Blue Heron property. The well-maintained festival grounds lend itself perfectly to the attraction with its ample parking and smooth trails through the woods. After two weeks, organizers are happy with the response they have seen. Attendees have been giving them praise for this ambitious effort. They also say that they have received visitors from Buffalo, Pittsburgh and other faroff locales. Night Lights is aiming to be a complimentary tourist attraction during the summer and fall months. For An inquisitive onlooker checks out the butterflies in the more information, visit www. illuminated garden at the site of the Great Blue Heron Music Festival. heronnightlights.com.

I had been in good health unitl Nov. 2006 when, for some reason, I had a complete bleed-out in my body. The doctors did not know why. My kidneys shut down and now I am on dialysis. If you are blood type “B” or “O” and would like to be Richie’s living kidney donor, please contact Jeanette Ostrom at (716) 450-8958 or e-mail
[email protected]. To the world you may be just one person, but to one person, you just may be the world. Thank you from the Western New York Kidney Connection.
