3 “I was excited this afternoon when I got to the class.” “Yeah?” “Because of the rain! It was pouring.” “Because you could get your feet wet?” “How extraordinary!” “Of course.” “Why then?” “I love hearing the sounds the rain makes when it hits the umbrella.” “I always feel that I need to shake them off, or the weight would destroy the umbrella.” “Do you really do that?” “Sometimes.” “I always feel this obligation that I need to collect them. Once I step inside, I stick the end on the floor, and see how big a pond they’d make.” “Do you really do that?” “Of course. My brother and I.” “Family tradition.” “Yeah. I was always with my dad when I was younger, and I love watching the rain in our Volvo. The raindrops on the upper part of the windshield would slowly slide down —and on the way down, they’d eat up other raindrops, and they’d become bigger, and heavier, and finally—WOOSH! Off they go!” “I see why the rain excites you now.” “Yeah. And it has to be Volvo, you know? Now we have a new BMW, but the feeling is totally different.” “I see your point.” “But I wish it could stop so we can go out.” “But it’s not bad stucking in here, is it?” “It’s fine. But it depends on who you’re stuck with.” “And it’s “just” fine with me?” “Okay, it’s nice.” “Good.” “You know why else I like rain?” “Why?” “You know when it hasn’t been raining for a long time, and suddenly it rains?” “Yeah?” “That smell. That smell when the rain first hits the soil. I love it.” “That’s the smell of grass, or leaves.”

“No, it’s not. It’s the rain. Just the rain, nothing else.” “Rain’s not supposed to have any smell. It’s just water, you know, H2O.” “Well, that’s how it’s supposed to smell.” “I like your thought, though.” “Well, you should. I know I’m right.” “But I used to walk on this path when I go home—a path that’s always covered with leaves. And it’s a very similar smell.” “Do you think I’d like it, too?” “I think so.” “I’d need to see it some day.” “Smell it.” “Right.” “It’s stopping.” “Almost.” “Can we go now?”
