The Transcendental Ego and the Subtle Self By Anthony J. Fejfar, B.A., J.D., Esq., Coif © Copyright 2009 by Anthony J. Fejfar Developmental Psychology states that a person’s ego first developes at age 2 and Level 2, , and then is integrated at Level 4 in adolescence. In order for a person to have a satisfying Spiritual Life, however, the Subtle Self of Level 6 must be developed. The Self, as described by Depth Psychologist, Carl Jung, is an integrated, individuated, Spiritual Self, not a selfish egoistic self. In order to move from the ego at Level 4, to the Self at Level 6, the person must develop a Transcendental Ego at Level 5. The Transcendental Ego transcends the ego in favor of higher development. The Transcendental Ego moves the person beyond his or her current ego integration to an Ego Integration which involves Higher Values. The Transcendental Ego promotes the Cognitive Self Transcendence of the Transcendental Precepts: Be Attentive, Be Intelligent, Be Reasonable, Be Responsible, Be Loving, Be Compassionate. Thus, the Transcendental Ego developes into the Subtle Self, based upon Cognitive Self transcending the ego.
