The Role Of A Crime Scene Manager The main role of a crime scene manager is to supervise the examination of a scene to facilitate any input of specialist information to ensure a maximum of evidence is collected. This means that a CSM must be able to assess a situation and prioritise work i.e. if a murder scene, a possible murder weapon is one of the most important things to look for. A CSMs role is also to ensure that health and safety regulation are followed. For example all persons that enter a scene must wear the protective clothing, masks and gloves, which also helps to prevent any contamination to the scene and evidence. CSMs therefore must also ensure the welfare needs of the crime scene personal are met, for example regular brakes when in a hot and small environment. As a crime scene manager I ensured the team worked in a safe way, especially when searching for evidence where I encouraged the use of torches and mirrors to enable them to see in places they couldn’t normally, helping to prevent any accidents where for example, one of the SOCOs could have been injured by an unseen needle. Finally a CSM is also responsible for keeping a log of everything that occurs at the crime scene including any evidence discovered, what time, where and by who as well as noting down when personal enter and leave the room, with the reasons why.
