What a blessing to be a grandmother. I look forward to growing and learning from my new position in life. How wonderful to enjoy spring on our new campus. We had the most fun time eating, dancing and being entertained at this year’s Spanish Festival. A special thank you to Senora Valdes, Senora Olsen, Senor Medina, Senora LaMoureaux and Senora Larotta our wonderful Spanish teachers. A special thanks also to Marie Valdez for the exceptional volunteer coaching in Spanish dance and many other areas. I want to thank the parents that volunteered for cooking, supervising sewing and much more in all these events. We were privileged to be entertained by our elementary students performing their songs and dances from their Musical. Your children are so amazing. I hope you were able to come to these fun events. I look forward to seeing you at our “Student Led Conference”. Be sure you mark your calendar for The Spring concert, high school musical, and graduation.

On Thursday, March 19th, the Elementary performed their musical "TFA sings around the world". Students from pre-K to 6th grade sang traditional songs from all around the world, some in different languages! Countries they represented included Jamaica, Barbados, Israel, Mexico, and Ghana. The students also energetically danced to world music, really getting the crowd excited! The drum and guitar students also got to showcase their talent, with African drumming and "La Cucaracha"! It was really neat to see how the kids connected with other cultures and how wonderful they did on stage! Another successful concert! -Madaline Hill

The Jacksonville Zoo is almost always a guaranteed delightful experience, but March 5 was an above average trip to the zoo for our high school students. I am sure each of the groups had their highlighted moment, but the group I traveled with made quite a few moments memorable. We fed giraffes, communicated with the monkeys, and visited the river to observe the natural Florida marine-life. Neysha Bowers was able to draw the attention of the Silver Back Gorilla and we were able to see, literally, face to face the details of that animal. Richard Ivey captured the attention of Chimpanzees with a tangerine he was snacking on, and they reached out as a little kid would for candy. The dock on the river stretched us out closer to the birds feeding in the marsh. All in all the day was a fun, educational experience filled with beautiful scenery.

The Foundation Academy showed up at Jacksonville City Hall Monday March 16, 2009 for a silent protest against violence. The statement was demonstrated in Hemming Plaza, where the students pretended to shoot one another, then fall to the ground to pose as victims. The protest was developed by Elliot Preston, Jennifer Brady,& Jerak Wright. The three seniors collaborated, fine tuned and executed the event as part of their senior project.

Each year we celebrate the diversity and cultural differences of Spanish-speaking countries from Spain to Argentina. Students choose a Spanish speaking country in their advisory classes, they research the background, culture, geography, economy, and more. This work then culminates in the Festival, where students share samplings of food, art, history, and dance. We believe that creating an authentic cultural event such as this helps our students to develop a greater global awareness, appreciation, and perspective. This year our festival was honored with the appearance of special guests such as King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel of Spain, Fidel Castro, Shakira, Samy Sosa, Ché Guevarra, and others, who represented their countries with pride, strolled about our grounds, answered questions, and signed autographs. This year we had wonderful sponsors for our event. Local area restaurants and store owners generously gave discount coupons, gift certificates for free dinners and lunches, as well as small items from their stores for student drawings. We want to express our deep gratitude for their support and encourage all of our families to personally thank these sponsors whenever you patronize their stores or restaurants. Our sponsors were: La Nopalera Restaurant at 14333 Beach Blvd., Sticky Fingers at 363 Atlantic Blvd., Krispy Kreme at 12973 Atlantic Blvd., Stonewood Grill at 950 Marsh Landing Pkwy., Mambo’s Café at 2158 Mayport Rd. #6., El Ranchito Restaurant at 14333-22 Beach Blvd. New Madrid Restaurant at 11233 Beach Blvd., Lollipop Lane at 363 Atlantic Blvd. Ms Arlene Ortiz at Trujillo Image and the Florida Starlight Magazine both at 12041 Beach Blvd. S. 23.
