THE PHASES OF THE MOON
•
The rotation of the moon around the earth makes the moon seems to change in shape.
•
This is caused by the different angles we see the bright part of the moon’s surface.
•
This is called phases of the moon
•
Moon doesn’t produce any light by itself, the moon reflects the light from the sun.
•
The moon goes through 4 major shapes in 28 days
First shape
: NEW MOON •
The moon cannot be seen / not visible
•
This because the moon is positioned in between the sun and the earth

EARTH
Second shape : CRESCENT MOON
Third shape
•
This moon can be seen after the new moon but before the first quarter moon
•
The crescent moon will grow larger everyday until the moon looks like the first quarter moon.
: HALF MOON •
Only half of the moon will be visible
•
The right half of the moon look brighter and the left half moon is dark and cannot be seen.
•
The half moon will grow larger everyday until the moon reaches the full moon
Fourth shape : FULL MOON •
The moon is visible fully
•
This means that the earth, the sun and the moon are nearly in straight line, with the earth in the middle
•
The moon looks bright because it reflects sunlight
