The Muscular System by Tyler
Richards
What is the Muscular System? • The muscular system is composed of
muscles and tendons in your body to help it move.
What does the Muscular System do for the body? • The reason we have a muscular system is MOVEMENT!
If we didn’t have a muscular system, we wouldn’t be able to move!
What is the difference between voluntary & involuntary muscles? • Voluntary muscles are muscles that YOU control (skeletal muscles).
• Involuntary muscles are muscles that you DON’T control. These muscles are controlled by the nervous system.
What is a smooth muscle? • Smooth muscle makes up most of the muscle in vital
organs such as the heart. Smooth muscles are not under direct voluntary control. Therefore some smooth muscles are involuntry.
• Example of a smooth muscle: Heart

What is a cardiac muscle? • These muscles are found only in the
heart. These muscles are involuntary. It wouldn’t be safe if they were voluntary. We would be able to stop our heart from beating, anytime we wanted!

How does a strain affect the Muscular System?
• A strain is damage to a muscle or a tendon.
How does a cramp affect the Muscular System?
• A cramp contract muscles that do not relax.
How does tendinitis affect the Muscular System? • Tendinitis is an inflammation of tendon.
What happens when a muscle contracts? • When a muscle contracts, the thick
filaments slide further in between the thin filaments like interlacing fingers.
What does it mean to extend a muscle? • To extend a muscle A MOTION IS MADE
TO INCREASE AN ANGLE BETWEEN TWO BONES.
What is Muscular Dystrophy? • Muscular Dystrophy (abbr. MD) is a genetic disorder that weakens muscles that help the body move.
Signs & Symptoms of MD
• Signs & symptoms differ depending on the type of MD.
Different types of MD include the following....
Types of MD
Types of MD • Dachenne MD • Becker MD • Emery-Preifuss MD • Limb-Girdle MD • Facioscapalohumeral MD • Myotonic MD • Congenital MD
Treatments for MD • NO CURE for MD
• Treatments include the following....
• Physical Theropy • Certain exercises • Surgery • Occupational Theropy
• AND MORE
What are ways we can avoid Muscular System injuries? • Stretch
and
• Warming up before exercising are good ways to avoid injuries.
