THE MIRACLE OF MULTIPLICATION

THE MIRACLE

OF

YOUNG ADULT CELLS JAN 2006 WEEK 2

MULTIPLICATION

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE MAIN FOCUS OF THIS LESSION IS TO LET THE PEOPLE KNOW THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTION OF YA MINISTRY FOR THIS YEAR AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO WANT TO EVANGELISE AND DISCIPLE SOMEONE IN THE MINISTRY. (EG. SIGN UP AS A FOLLOW-UP LEADER.)

FOCUS (10 mins) Ask the members if they have any spiritual goals for this year. (I believe some of the groups have evaluated last year as a cell, you may want to re-cap some of the spiritual goals they have set for themselves or a cell for this year 2006) Please do not spend too much time on this section because we have a long lesson. Ask members if they remember what Ps. Kieran preached on last week’s vision casting week? If they do not remember, it is ok. Tell them it is about the miracle of multiplication. Have someone or read together as a group Matt 14:13-21. You may hand out the lesson notes at this time. Briefly summarize or read the introduction on the member’s notes and move on to the 5 keys of what it takes for us to partake with Jesus in this miracle of multiplication.

LEARNING ACTIVITY (30 mins) If your cell is big, say more than 12 people, you may break them out into 5 groups and assign them each section. Give them only 5 mins and gather them back to present their answers. However, you may still choose to just run through the sections together as a cell.

I. Rekindle Our Compassion for the Lost (v 13-14) Why do you think Jesus withdrew by himself to a solitary place?

Because of the news of John the Baptist beheaded. He was grief and wanted time by himself.

What do you think must have gone through Jesus’ heart as he saw the multitudes waiting for him? Can you define what is compassion? He felt for the needs of the people. He had compassion for the people. Compassion can be defined as deep seated feeling for the welfare of others, not just ability to feel the pain as if your own (empathy) but desiring to better/alleviate the pain to your comfort level. (my own definition, you can check dictionary for more explanation. But I feel if you can tell a story of you having compassion for someone, that would be better.

Why do you think it is necessary to have compassion for the lost? How can we rekindle our compassion for the lost?

Having compassion is the first step towards us reaching the lost. We must feel their state of lostness without God (eternal damnation) and desire them to come up to our level of knowing and experiencing Christ. Some people are generally more compassionate to people than others. In some ways, compassion is intrinsic, but a person who is after God’s heartbeat will become more compassionate because compassion is God’s attribute. Thus, compassion can be rekindled by a life of following Jesus and close relationship with God.

Leader’s Notes Learning Outcomes: Understanding, Attitude Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: • Understand the Spiritual Direction for the YA ministry in Year 2006. • Remember 5 Keys of what it takes to partake with Jesus in a miracle of multiplication. • Desire to share the Gospel with a friend and disciple someone in the ministry.

REMEMBER: NEXT WEEK NO CELL MEETING. ALL ARE TO COME FOR WORSHIP EXPERIENCE AT L2 HALL, 20TH JAN, FRI, 7:30PM.

Remember to keep time. Try not to dwell too long in each section as some parts are not as important. In line with the 2 key outcomes desired for this lesson, Part I and III would be the more important sections.

Note: The theme of this message is what will it takes for us to partake with Jesus in this miracle of multiplication. The answers are the 5 points stated here. Run through the 5 points first before going into the lesson proper to give the members an overview of the whole structure of the lesson. To be “moved with compassion” literally means “to have one’s inner being (viscera) stirred.” It is stronger than sympathy. The word is used twelve times in the Gospels, and eight of these references are to Jesus Christ. Note: Over here, we are not talking about compassion for the sick or suffering but for the lost!

YOUNG ADULT CELLS JAN 2006 WEEK 2

II. Recognize the Spiritual Timings of God (v15) Why do you think the disciples were unable to discern what Jesus was about to do?

Many a time, God wants to work through us, but we were slow to learn, hard of hearing or simply to dumb to understand. At other times, we act smart and rely on worldly wisdom.

What are some ways that can help us recognize the spiritual timings of God?

Being sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Cultivating a living relationship with God, practicing the presence of God whenever and wherever.

III. Repossess the Great Commission in Our Lives Ask the members what the disciples might have felt when Jesus asked them to feed the multitudes? (Not in member’s notes) They must have been baffled, seeing the task as impossible. But Jesus asked them to give them something to eat. It is the power within to feed the spiritual hungry.

Explain to them the process of the Great Commission. Challenge them that the great commission is a commandment that must be obeyed, not just a suggestion. The 4 blanks are follows: evangelism, follow-up, discipling/mentoring and equipping. At what stage do you think you are at in the above process? Invite members to evaluate themselves. Most will believer/disciple.

Explain that the reason why apostle is the final product and not disciple in the Great Commission process is because the commission was first given to the apostles. Apostles in a narrow sense referred only to the 11 or 12 disciples of Jesus Christ, but in a loose sense, it means a messenger, one send to proclaim the gospel. Thus, in a loose sense, a missionary would qualify as an apostle.

How do you think you can participate in the Great Commission? This is the place for you to challenge them to be involved in evangelizing their friends. Also, ask for commitment for those who want to be sign up as a follow-up leader. (Follow-up leaders will follow up with new converts or visitors to the church. Training will be provided. Encourage them to be part of this and challenge them to become spiritual parents.)

IV. Revalue our Resources in Him (v17) From John 6:5-9, how do you think the disciples feel about their resources and task at hand? Difficult, they look at their own inadequacies etc.

Do you feel inadequate in serving God? What are the 5 loaves and 2 fishes that God is asking you to give to Him?

God has given each of us with at least a gift (1 Cor 14). Each of us also has talents and abilities. We need to look into our potential in Christ. No matter how “small” is our gift, God has a place of service for each of us.

V. Rely on Him to Break and Work Through Us (v 18-21) Do you desire to partake with Jesus in this miracle of multiplication? What are some personal issues that you need Jesus to break and work through you?

Invite them to do some personal sharing if you want. Else, for sake of time, you may share about yourself, ask one or two to share or ask them to go back to reflect.

What are some practical implications of partaking with Jesus in this miracle of multiplication?

Eg. inconvenienced in our time, need courage and boldness to step out, commitment in following up people.

C Read through the conclusion. Tell the people the YA ministry is planning the following evangelistic events for this year: 1) Personal Evangelism – Starbuck voucher (60 x$5) invite a friend for a coffee or drink with the purpose of sharing the Gospel. A $5 voucher will be given to member, dispensed by the cell leader. Member needs to return a form of their experience with their friend to the cell leader. Targeted time line to implement this: Feb/Mar. 2) Evangelistic Cell Outing – target time: April and Oct. Cell will plan for a get-together with non-Christian friends. Intentional sharing of personal testimony etc. 3) Ministry-Wide E. Efforts – July  Street E, and evangelistic musical Gigs. Do get them excited about the up-coming events and conclude by asking them to think about one or two persons that they are trying to reach out. Ask them for share their names and then pray for the people. Pray also for each of the members to be ready to partake with Jesus in this miracle Member’s Notes page 2 of 3
