The Hebrew Name of God – El The word El comes from a root word meaning "might, strength, power" and probably derives from the Ugaritic term for god. In Scripture, the primary meanings of this root are "god" (pagan or false gods), "God" (the true God of Israel), and sometimes "the mighty" (referring to men or angels). The Hebrew word “Elohim” is translated in the singular form, but is actually plural. It refers to every God everyone has ever interacted with, but also implies that they were always the same one God. Translators render this word as “God,” instead of “Gods” to avoid confusion.
