Catching Us on the Flip Side by Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister

Ever hear the phrase, “catch you on the flip side?” Of course you have, and in a host of different contexts. Sometimes it’s a reference used by one dying and dying with the wondrous expectation of being reunited with loved ones in glory. Sometimes it’s more of a casual reference to regrouping with family and friends following a vacation or some trip away from home. Sometimes it’s just an expectation for tomorrow— perhaps even, one that is better than pressing times of grief, anxiety, hurt, and struggle. Well, we can say what we want about Jesus, but one thing we can’t say: “He’s just plain boring.” As the disciples learned, his teaching is different— challenging, strange, dissonant, and often packed with the unexpected—a surprise. While the trained theologians of his day tend to see one thing and the people to expect another, he possesses that special knack for seeing and expecting something completely different—refreshing—surprising—and sometimes, troubling. So, life with Jesus is anything but boring. He always makes a difference. While we continue to explore the ways in which we can Make a Difference, we will look this Sunday at just one moment when Jesus catches us on “the flip side.” Mark takes us right into the Jesus School of Theology and the Classroom of the Unexpected. Join us. It just might be a surprise. (Mark 10:35-45)
