NO FADE IN [ABRUPT FOOTAGE]: WILDERNESS BIRTH A woman is giving birth in “the poorest village” in Bangladesh. It is squalor. The only man who cares and assists is not the father. He simply wants her. He figures – if he helps her, maybe he has a chance with her. Dialog is translated from native language to subtitles below. Woman is screaming periodically in pain, arching her back, eyes squeezed shut, fists grabbing at her shabby filthy clothes. MAN You’re going to wake everyone in the village with your noise. WOMAN It’s in the middle of the day. Who cares. If they’re sleeping, they’re lazy asses. Ah, AHHH! MAN Can’t you be quiet? I thought in your family – you were supposed to have only strong women. WOMAN This is your way to pick me up? You come here pretending to help me while you only want to get inside me – and my baby has not even come out yet! MAN So.. what you’re saying is you’d rather do this alone.. Woman looks at man sidelong between pains. If looks could kill.. MAN So you’d rather not do this alone. Even if I’m a sleazy asshole trying to pick you up? Woman grimaces in assent. Passage of time. Baby is out. Cord is cut. Baby is wrapped in shabby dirty cloth and handed to 3
mom. She is breathless exhausted and with tears of joy. WOMAN No thanks to you asshole. MAN I see motherhood does not change your vocabulary. Baby starts crying. MAN He’s hungry. WOMAN How could you possibly know? Man starts gesticulating trying to express frustration. WOMAN You can’t. Baby gets louder and mom tries to comfort him. MAN I’m telling you – he’s hungry. WOMAN We’re you ever a father? How could you even know that? Let me be with my baby in peace. Baby gets very loud as if screaming in pain. Man attempts to “shut him up” by putting his hands over the baby’s mouth. But something bizarre happens. Waves of intense sound energy start coming from the baby’s mouth. The man pushes and pushes his hands over the mouth but cannot. The sound intensifies and flesh starts dissolving from the man’s hands. The man backs away in horror. MAN You have given birth to a monster. WOMAN You tried to hurt my baby! Get the hell outa here!
4
MAN I’m going to the police. WOMAN Where? Do we have police here? And what would you tell them? A baby screamed the skin off your hands because you tried to hurt him? MAN I wasn’t trying to hurt your baby. Man appears dejected and apologetic. He hangs his head. Baby quiets down. He looks at his hands. They are perfectly normal again. Baby has healed them. WOMAN I told you my baby was good! Man in tears. MAN I’m sorry. You have a good baby. But I’m not a good man. I will leave you alone. Man exits. Camera zooms to mom’s eyes: full of hope, wonder, and love. FADE OUT
FADE IN: ENLIGHTENMENT The seven year old boy is walking alone around a lake on a footpath and he stops. He looks at his hands. He looks at his feet. He looks at the path behind him. He looks at the path in front. He looks at the trees buffeted by gusts of wind. He looks at the sky. He surveys the lake. He smiles. He suddenly realizes the path is an analogy for his life. He closes his eyes. He “reaches” forward seven years – to his age at fourteen. He visualizes himself at that future age. He taps himself on the shoulder. He winks at himself. He continues forward: 21 years, 28 years, 35 years, 42 years, 49 years,.. – each time, greeting himself and smiling
5
appreciative. He opens his eyes. He sits down with his back to a tree. He closes his eyes again – reaching forward again. Each example of himself closes his eyes and meditates together. They become one – one being stretched across time radiating light and love. The boy opens his eyes. He looks at the sky and smiles. FADE OUT
FADE IN: OBSEQUIOUS Two boys are in a posh neighborhood in someone’s back yard. They are at ease. One boy has a black front tooth and is a bit chubby. The other is our Avatar. CHUBBY You could suck me. I could pay you a dollar. Eyes bulge and mouth hangs open in disbelief. AVATAR But [he stammers] I’m not gay! CHUBBY Your brother is gay. So why not you? I can pay you. The Avatar shakes his head. AVATAR No, I’m not gay. And I won’t suck you for a dollar or a hundred dollars. Find somebody else to suck you. CHUBBY Don’t tell anybody I asked you.. The Avatar walks away without looking back very discouraged and frowning. Chubby looks down at his feet. Storm clouds gather overhead. Wind picks up. Chubby heads for home. FADE OUT
6
FADE IN: MESSIAH OR AVENGER? The Avatar is reading a newspaper. He’s not particularly sophisticated. He’s not “high class”. He looks like an average guy. He’s reading a short editorial on (the currently unknown) Avatar: “Who is The Avatar? The Avatar is a guy who – when you drop a nuke on him, he doesn’t even flinch..” He chuckles. “The Avatar will be able to bend time and space – maybe even time travel.” He laughs and talks to himself. AVATAR I don’t think I will ever be able to time travel. He continues reading. “The Avatar will be able to make a fusion explosion – just by thinking about it.” He looks up from the newspaper into a wall mirror at himself questioningly. “He will be able to make a blackhole from the power of his mind.” AVATAR Now that’s an interesting thought. He looks out a window and thinks about his past. Images of his childhood and youth swirl in his mind. He thinks about his meditation with himself at age seven. He smiles. He watches the scene of himself as baby from his mother’s perspective, then watches the same scene again from the man’s perspective. He looks at his hands. They are bloody. He frowns. He keeps hearing his mother’s words repeat in his mind. MOTHER I told you my baby was good! He looks at himself in the mirror again and frowns. Then his expression gradually changes to peace and selfassuredness. He looks at his hands. They are no longer bloody. AVATAR Hm.
7
He says to himself. He turns on the tv. There is an old Ministry video playing right from the beginning: So What. [Technical note: it’s the same video available on youtube.com uploaded by grossmisconduct666, 9:52.] The Avatar quizzically looks at the video then back to the newspaper. Instead of an editorial, there are the lyrics of the song: die! die! die! die! scum sucking debilitate debauched! anal fuckfest, thrill olympics savage scourge supply and sanctify so what? so what? so what? so what? die! die! die! die! die! die! die! die! you said it! sedatives supplied become laxatives my eyes shit out lies i only kill to know i'm alive so what? so what? so what? so what? die! die! die! die! die! die! die! die! so what, it's your problem to learn to live with destroy us, or make us saints we don't care, it's not our fault that we were born too late a screaming headache on the brow of the state killing time is appropriate to make a mess and fuck all the rest we say, we say so what? so what? so what? so what? die! die! now i know what is right i'll kill them all if i like i'm a time bomb inside no one listens to reason, it's too late and i'm ready to fight! now i'm ready to fight!
8
i’m ready to fight. i’m ready to fight. i’m ready to fight, fight, fight, fight. so what? so what? so what? so what? so what? so what? so what? Animation sequence: from the lyrics of the song – that begin from the text on the newspaper as the Avatar reads, the viewer sees with the eyes of the Avatar, the words zoom toward the viewer and transform into images as they approach. General guidelines on selecting image/footage sequence: war footage that illustrates Western brutality from Korean, Vietnam, Gulf, and Iraq wars. Images/footage from Samara, for example, are allowable if they clearly illustrate Western brutality. As the Avatar reads and sees the horror, a look of extreme sadness and despair overcomes him. He hangs his head as the video continues to play. The music becomes progressively louder. Beginning with the materials surrounding and behind the tv, the room begins to pulverize in sync with the music. Only the Avatar seated at the kitchen table, the newspaper and table, and the tv remain untouched. Everything else is pulverized including the apartment building, the surrounding buildings, and eventually the entire city – all pulverized by a cyclonelike wind. As the Avatar raises his head from the table and opens his teary tired eyes, all destroyed material reforms and coalesces. He raises his head and blinks – looking at the tv. There is just static. He looks back down at the press: the same editorial he was reading before. He rubs his eyes and goes to the bathroom. FADE OUT
FADE IN: RESPITE The Avatar is a teenager again. He is in a tall grass field on a blanket with his girlfriend. The field is surrounded by hills or forest. They are alone with crickets, twittering birds, and sunshine. They are rolling around on the blanket. 9
She is tickling him and giggling. He is happy. GIRLFRIEND What? Why are you so serious? He is taken aback. He can’t understand her question. AVATAR I’m happy. Can’t you see that? He beams genuinely. GIRLFRIEND Do you love me? Intense feeling wells up in the Avatar and he almost chokes on his reply. AVATAR Close your eyes. She does. He kisses each eye and her lips gently and sweetly. He closes his eyes and thinks about their future. A beautiful baby boy appears in his arms cooing, looking at the sky, then looking at the young couple on either side of him. They open their eyes in astonishment. The girlfriend giggles and begins to play with the baby. GIRLFRIEND And who is this little guy? She speaks to both the baby and Avatar. AVATAR Why that’s our baby: half you; half me. I took the best of you, the best of me, and made him. She gives him a sidelong glance of disbelief and gets on her knees – still holding the baby. She looks around the field for its mom. GIRLFRIEND His mom must be somewhere near. AVATAR She sure is – I’m lookin’ at her.
10
GIRLFRIEND Arthur! Stop teasing me! She smiles and laughs. GIRLFRIEND Where is his mom? AVATAR I’m serious – I’m lookin’ at her! He winks at her and beams again. She smiles in disbelief and coddles the baby – lightly bouncing him. GIRLFRIEND Arthur, if you’re pulling my leg.. AVATAR I’m tellin’ you the truth. He’s our baby. You’re his mom. I’m his father. He’s made of you and me. She holds him up and looks in his eyes. The baby looks at her in deep recognition. He babbles appreciatively. She cannot believe her eyes. She’s flabbergasted. GIRLFRIEND But I’m not ready to be a mom yet.. AVATAR So you want me to unmake him.. GIRLFRIEND NO! I just wanted a little normal fun as a teenager.. The Avatar closes his eyes. The trio is now in the living room of a flat on the floor playing with the baby. The surroundings are comfortable but not posh. Mom and baby are having fun while the Avatar gets up and goes to a window – looks outside. There are walnut trees outside. It is an autumn evening. Leaves are swirling gently and playfully around and between the trees – as if dancing. GIRLFRIEND What’s wrong honey?
11
AVATAR Could you be happy with this? GIRLFRIEND Could you? She picks up the baby and walks to the window stands next to the Avatar. All three are looking out. GIRLFRIEND I’m happy as long as I’m with you Arthur. He looks deeply into the baby’s eyes. The boy smiles. He then looks deeply into his girlfriend’s eyes. The deeper he penetrates her mind, the more love he feels from her. It becomes too intense. He withdraws. There are tears of respect and appreciation in his eyes. AVATAR I didn’t know you felt that way about me. He stammers. GIRLFRIEND Arthur, I love you with all my heart, all my soul, and all my life. She puts the baby in his crib with a bottle of formula. She takes Arthur by his hand. She leads him into the bedroom. They stop at the threshold. GIRLFRIEND Let’s make another one the normal way. She winks at him and pulls him into the darkened and comfortable room. FADE OUT
FADE IN: ARGUMENT WITH RILEY The Avatar is sitting at a coffee table with Riley Martin,
12
infamous alien abductee. Riley slams a newspaper down on the table rattling cups, trays, and silverware. RILEY Damn it Arthur! I’m tellin’ you! I was there! On the fucking mothership! AVATAR Don’t you mean “motherfuckingship”? He winks at Riley. RILEY They cut my pinky! Riley thrusts it into the Avatar’s face for examination. He pulls it close and examines it. He smells it. AVATAR Smells like shit. You been scratchin’ your balls? RILEY Go ahead and mock me. Laugh it up! I’m tellin’ you – I was there! Riley gesticulates madly and points to photos on the table. AVATAR Look Riley, a couple of foggy photos and a cut pinky don’t equal alien evidence. RILEY The book! How do you explain the book?! The Avatar picks up the book and looks at the cover. A cartoonlike drawing of Tan is there. AVATAR You wrote this from memories.. RILEY No, it flew outa my ass on golden wings. What the fuck to you think? AVATAR And this is Tan. Or a crude illustration of him.
13
RILEY No it’s my fucking mother. Yea, it’s Tan. The Avatar flips through pages. AVATAR Yea, I read it. Lotta good stuff in here. He pauses and looks at Riley appreciatively. Riley smiles in acknowledgement. AVATAR But not everything here is real. A lot here is from your imagination Riley. Don’t you understand that? Riley scowls at the Avatar but not menacingly. RILEY I was there man. I thought we was gonna kick some lizard butt together.. Sympathy for Riley is on the Avatar’s face. AVATAR Look Riley, I can make them real for you but .. it would not be the same thing. You understand? I can make your lizards and Biaviians and whatnot. But it’s not the same as them being here from before. I would have to change the entire geologic record to agree with your history – not just here but on every planet your Biaviians have “visited”. Shit, I would have to make their homeworld from scratch based on your book! He looks at Riley in exasperation. Riley grabs the Avatar’s hand. RILEY Man, you gotta do somethin’ before 2012! The Avatar holds Riley’s hand and looks at them clasped. He gets an idea.
14
AVATAR Look, I’ll show you what I’m talkin’ about. He stands up – still with Riley’s hand in his. He motions Riley to stand up too. Their surroundings dissolve and they find themselves on Golgotha, the Mount of Olives. Jesus is unconscious on the cross – as are the two to his left and right. It is dusk or night. AVATAR There’s your Jesus. They crucified him on the same place he preached – to make a point. Riley lets go of his hand and moves toward Jesus in total disbelief. He can’t believe his eyes, ears, or sense of touch. Riley keeps looking between his hands and Jesus. He touches the crosswood with his right hand. AVATAR Yea, it’s real. But we’re not really there – at the time of crucifixion. I can’t time travel Riley. This is all some sort of simulation my mind has created to make a point. Jesus raises his head in utter exhaustion. He looks at Riley. JESUS Mommy.. Riley looks at his feet and shakes his head. RILEY That’s not funny man. AVATAR But you get my point. Riley sighs. RILEY Yea.. They reappear at the coffee shop – just as before with
15
Riley’s hand still grasping the Avatar’s. The Avatar leans back in his chair as he releases Riley’s hand. Riley looks down at his hand. They both sigh together and laugh. RILEY Let’s eat man! I’m starvin’! FADE OUT
FADE IN: PRELUDE TO.. The Avatar’s two children, a boy and girl, play in the surf, foam, and flotsam of northern Lake Michigan [the southern coastline of the UP, facing south]. It is a blissfull summer day along the coastline. The children are chasing each other like playful kittens in the water – giggling, laughing, and drunk on fun. Mom is carefully watching them from a blanket on the beach. Their house is across the highway and behind them: a modest place with modest surroundings. She is hugging her knees and squinting behind sunglasses. Dad is next to her laying on his back looking straight up into the azure sky. MOM It’s so bright today. I can barely keep tabs on the kids even with these super dark sunglasses. AVATAR It’s our trashed atmosphere. Another casualty of the modern age.. Did you put sunscreen on them? MOM Yep. They’re protected. She pivots and jumps on her husband – pushing his arms back and pinning him down – her face very close to his. MOM Are you protected? She breathes into his face steamily.
16
AVATAR Um.. He frees his hands, grabs her butt, and rolls them over with him on top. He imitates her previous position. AVATAR Are you? And kisses her passionately. She kisses back with her whole vital force. Her arms begin to flail. She can’t breath. He backs off. MOM The kids.. They both return to sitting on the blanket watching the kids. The kids are okay. They didn’t seem to notice the two lovers. MOM Why don’t you fix the atmosphere? He hangs his head. AVATAR You know why. I can’t mess with that kind of stuff. Not my job. MOM So what is your job? He looks at their kids playing in the surf. AVATAR Right now, it’s being the best dad I can be for those two. And.. He tickles her and kisses her ear. AVATAR Being your secret lover.. MOM Not much of a secret there. AVATAR Yea, but we’re spozed to be “the old
17
bored couple” never interested in sex anymore.. She knocks him on the head with her kuckle. MOM Who’s old? They tickle and laugh with each other much like their kids. Camera pulls back and pans up – pointing at the sun. The sound of their laughter, and that of the kids, fades into silence. The image of the sun still present. FADE OUT
FADE IN: WAR A secret military meeting in Washington. Five are present. The President walks in and sits down. PRESIDENT Are we ready? I have a few questions. GOON1 Yes Mr. President. He looks at the rest. GOON2 Yes Mr. President. GOON3 Ready here Mr. President. GOON4 Ready President, sir. GOON5 Yes sir Mr. President, sir. The President stares at Goon5 and continues. PRESIDENT As I said, I have a few questions about the operation.. I want assurance that
18
the target will not be able to access his wife and children AT ALL during or after the operation. If that part of it fails, we’re screwed. All goons fidget a bit in silence. The President raises his voice. PRESIDENT Can I have that assurance? GOON1 Yes sir – completely sir. GOON2 Yes sir – absolutely.. sir. GOON3 Sir yes sir. The President ogles him. He shyly hangs his head. GOON4 Yes sir – we give you complete assurance sir. GOON5 Sir, we assure you – the target will not have access to his wife or kids before, during, or after the operation. PRESIDENT Before? He’s with his family now! Goon5 is flustered. GOON5 I mean I meant .. during and after the operation.. The President stares him down. The next line is delivered in “supermilkchan” style. A bit of comic relief before the raging battle. PRESIDENT Well.. It’s because I’m the President! FADE OUT
19
FADE IN: WAR [CONT.D] The ensuing blood bath is totally out of control. All of the destruction is caused by the American military in its attempt to thwart the Avatar – calmly walking toward Washington. Clips from national news covering the event are sympathetic to the Avatar (his family was kidnapped in an effort to coerce him to attack Iran). Transition from news clips to the Avatar calmly walking down a street a few miles out from DC center. Snipers are trying to take him out. An invisible elliptical shield protects him. The shield extends into the ground below his feet by about two feet and above his head similarly. The shield is impervious to any attack – be it nuclear or biological. However, air and sound can pass; it is selective. It becomes somewhat visible under attack. A note about music: it is recommended the film staff contact Al Jourgensen for a custom remake of Ministry’s NWO. The idea is: the Avatar uses sound to destroy/defend. (But of course, that is not his only weapon/power.) Here, in this sequence, sound defense dominates. The song is playing as he defends himself. The song emanates from him – as if he is a kind of adjustable speaker. He can direct the power into a beam at crucial parts of the song – blasting entire buildings or cones through them – various cones of destruction depending on the attackers at the moment. The animation sequence could be a collaboration between Jourgensen and animators on staff – working together to synth the song and animation into an impressive flux. This is the “power” scene of the movie – so it should rock. If Jourgensen refuses or is otherwise unavailable, rights to use the edited song should be obtained for this scene. As mentioned above, the destruction caused by the Avatar is minimal compared to the stuff the American military progressively hurls at him. Of course, nukes are used against him at the very end – when he approaches the White House – obliterating DC but not the Avatar. After the last nuke is dropped, the blast wave, backlash, and cloud pass, the Avatar is left in utter silence alone.
20
AVATAR This is fucked. He looks up at the mushroom clouds rising into the air above and around him. Then turns toward Michigan and wistfully looks in that direction. FADE OUT
FADE IN: FAMILY The Avatar is in Canada attempting to get national airtime on the CBC in order to respond to the American military’s kidnapping of his family. AVATAR I have to respond publicly somehow. They’ve got my wife and kids. CBCGUY We recommend you settle this on American territory. Why bring Canada into this? You’re only endangering Canadian citizens by being here. The Avatar glares at the official. AVATAR They’ve got my kids. The official pauses and considers. CBCGUY Look, I know you could take a station by force. I know you could make a station out of thin air and use it to broadcast your response to the Americans. I have to assume you want to establish some kind of longterm alliance with Canada by coming here asking for help. That, and considering your family, impels me to strike a bargain with you. The Avatar looks quizzically at the official. 21
CBCGUY I have been instructed by “higher ups” to allow you to use a CBC station on one condition: you never “officially” come back to Canada again. The Avatar looks at his hands in consternation. He ponders a moment. AVATAR Okay.. I agree to your condition. I sort of understand your position, but don’t like it. Pause and cut to news clips reporting the Avatar’s response to the Americans. REPORTER Breaking news: the Avatar has made his response to the American military. He made his response earlier today in Canada at a CBC facility. We have recorded the broadcast just moments ago. We display it “live” for you now. Avatar on Canadian set in his usual comfortable attire. AVATAR I’m not gonna mince words. What you did was wrong and you know it. You took my kids, you took my wife,.. All to pressure me to attack Iran for you. Do it yourself! Look, if you don’t return my family to me within one hour – ONE HOUR – I will nuke every capital city of every state in the United States. You got one fucking hour! Static. REPORTER Um.. She stammers. REPORTER What do we do? What do we say? 22
She looks around the news set. A guy behind camera speaks out. GUY We don’t say anything! It’s not our job to respond to him! You call Washington .. I mean, you call the Feds, wherever they are, and beg them, whore to them, do whatever you gotta do – so they agree to hand over his family. This is a national emergency! The reporter just sits there in shock babbling to herself. GUY Stupid whore! I’ll call them myself. FADE OUT
FADE IN: REUNION The family is reunited at their home in northern Michigan. The children and mom fly to dad. They crush each other in desperate relief. After the sobbing diminishes, the Avatar pulls back a bit and holds his wife’s face in his hands. The children are still hugging them both fiercely. AVATAR I was so worried about you! They used some kind of machine to hide their thoughts, intentions, and your whereabouts.. I couldn’t find you! He kisses her face all over. AVATAR Then, when I couldn’t find you, I decided to go to Washington to confront them. MOM I know .. They let us watch tv in our holding cell. You stupid!
23
She knocks him on the head. MOM I was so worried about you! Then at the end, when they dropped the bombs, all transmission was lost – we lost our signal. We didn’t know what happened to you! You asshole! You had me so worried about you! She hugs him desperately. The Avatar pulls back a bit and examines her face. He then examines the faces of the children in his hands carefully. AVATAR What did they do to you! They changed you somehow! What did they do to you?! Mom stammers a bit in confusion. MOM I.. I’m not sure.. They injected us, then put us in some kind of chamber – like a big microwave. Then zapped us with some kind of energy and let us out.. I don’t feel any different but obviously, they did something to us. Look, you can’t even see where they gave us the injection. She shows him her right arm. He examines it. AVATAR Those fuckers.. The phone rings. The Avatar picks it up. A man on the other end starts talking without salutation. MAN So you know.. AVATAR What did you do to my family! He screams into the phone.
24
MAN We gave them an injection. We irradiated them. That’s all. Nothing special. The Avatar is fuming. Speechless. MAN So you see we have you by “the balls” as it were. The man continues to speak about the injection process but the Avatar is not listening. He is smashing the phonehand set on the phonebase repeatedly. It is breaking in his hand. As he smashes, he repeats screaming at the phone. AVATAR You fuck! You fuck! You fuck!.. And as he repeats and repeats, as the phone is destroyed, not by mental power but by physical power alone, the surroundings about the family fade to black and disappear. The family finds themselves in a new location with new surroundings and environment. MOM Arthur, where are we? AVATAR Look around. You’ll figure it out.. He sags in defeat. He slumps onto the sofa. Everything is muted tones – in order to avoid detection from telescopes. GIRL Momma, we’re on the moon! Lookit! She points to the ceiling where there are a number of windows facing up. Through one of them, you can see Earth. The children separate from mom and dad. They squeal in delight and jump together. They find they jump higher than normal and this only makes them more excited. They proclaim in unison. GIRL&BOY We’re on the moon! We’re on the moon! They jump so high that their heads lightly bump the ceiling.
25
MOM Hey hey hey! Careful there! The Avatar looks up and smiles – not so defeated after all. FADE OUT
FADE IN: REPRISE Return to secret conference room with President and his goons. A discussion is in progress. GOON1 Well, he knows they’re infected with something. He just doesn’t know what. GOON5 Yea, but we got ‘im! We got ‘im! PRESIDENT Yes, we got him but now he’s gone. Do we have any idea where? Silence. PRESIDENT Okay, you guys work on that. That’s an order. If you don’t give me something by the end of the day, you’re all fired! Ha ha! No one is laughing. PRESIDENT Seriously, you’re all fired if you don’t come up with something about his whereabouts – by tonight! Goon5 speaks up meekly. GOON5 Uh, boss.. We did some research on his origins. We found a story about when he was an infant. It was reported that as
26
an infant, he “screamed the skin off” a man’s hands. The man said his hands returned to normal so he didn’t report it immediately to the police. And.. PRESIDENT And why are you wasting my time with this bedtime story? GOON5 Um, because boss – we analyzed his defensive strategy at the Washington battle and well, we found that he used only sonic defense. This, coupled with the story about his origins suggests he’s limited in capability to sonic weapons and defense. PRESIDENT That is interesting isn’t it. FADE OUT
FADE IN: DEMISE The Avatar and his family have had some time to settle into their new home. Since his tastes are not posh, he does not create extravagance. But for the kids, he makes an underground large swimming pool and recreation area. Of course, all the footage of the kids playing must reflect the reduced gravity. They’re basically happy except for the “disease” the Americans have given the wife and kids. It does not affect them – only the Avatar, its intended victim. What it essentially is is this: the wife and kids have had their DNA modified turning them into effect – a virus against the Avatar. The more time he spends with them, the more his health deteriorates. It is insidious. They are realizing it. AVATAR Morning honey. She kisses him and looks at the newspaper on the table. 27
MOM When did that come? He smirks. AVATAR Just this morning. I pulled one up without much of a fuss. She opens and scans headlines. The Avatar is still there even though it has been months since the Washington battle. MOM You’re still in the news.. AVATAR I would suppose so after the Americans nuked their own capital city.. He sighs. She massages his shoulders. MOM You look terrible. Have you figured out what they did to us? She sits down. He looks up. AVATAR Basically. They gave you a virus, or made you into a virus, that I can’t detect. I’m not a geneticist. I don’t know my own DNA from a chimp’s but I do know this: they changed yours and it’s killing me. Indicate the passage of time – not an unhappy time. In spite of their isolation and the “disease”, they have made a home in their new abode. Three years have passed. The Avatar and his wife have managed to collect herbs from Earth that mitigate the effects of the illness – not halting them – but slowing them down. She cultivates them in a sunroom that is a branch off the main livingroom. The room is bright, beautiful, and full of hope as she tends the herbs. The Blue Danube is playing softly in the background. MOM Did you bring a paper today?
28
AVATAR No. I’m tired of the news. There’s nothing in there that can help us anyways.. MOM Do you think they know where we are? She looks up from her tending. He attempts to help her. AVATAR I’ve been watching their regular meetings in Washington, the “big guys”, and I come up less and less each meeting they have. MOM You watch them? AVATAR Yea, at first they somehow shielded their meetings and I couldn’t see. But now they don’t bother shielding and I can watch all I want.. MOM Pervert.. She winks at him. AVATAR Hey, I like to watch. He winks back at her. MOM I can arrange something suitable and more interesting for you to watch.. She puts her arms around his neck and dances slowly to the music. She kisses his nose. He stammers his embarrassed response. AVATAR I’ll have to check my schedule. Maybe I can squeeze you into a time slot. Indicate the passage of time. Another three years have 29
passed. The Avatar is seated at a large wooden desk in the sunroom with papers strewn about. There is a camera opposite him – in front of the desk – pointing at him. He is shuffling papers when she walks into the room – lighting up an already bright room. Mozart is playing quietly. AVATAR Honey, can you please turn off the music? I can’t concentrate with Mozart. She turns off the music. MOM What are you doing? She moves toward the desk and camera. AVATAR You know, I was making short videos of myself – to document the progression of the disease. And I realized something.. MOM What? He points to a stack of papers with simple handdrawn cartoons on them. She shuffles through them. MOM You made these? They’re so cute! AVATAR Um, that’s not why I made them.. She examines them more closely – trying to understand them. The sequence illustrates something. Something wondrous. She knocks her head trying to understand. She looks up at him asking with her eyes for help. AVATAR This is me. He points to a stick figure with a dot above his head. She giggles. AVATAR I’m opening up a “time portal”. Now you know, I can’t go back in time. But that 30
says nothing about going forward. He turns the sheets one at a time – illustrating for her. AVATAR If I’m VERY careful, I can bend space time just right so that we can travel to the future, any time of our choosing, only we can’t come back.. Her eyes go round and her mouth opens in amazement. AVATAR Not that I really WANT to miss ANYTHING. But if the family decides that’s what we must do, we can do it. They put the papers back down on the desk. She lightly touches the camera. MOM You really think this is the only way out? The only way to cure the disease? AVATAR The guys who gave me this disease are not going to give me the cure – if there is any. They shield and hide the stuff related to me so I can’t find it even with a deliberate search. He points to the camera. AVATAR Part of the reason I make this stuff is so that I can send it to the CBC. I have to document their bullshit so the world knows what assholes the Americans are. I’m going to send it today. I’d like you to ask the kids for a family meeting tonight, okay? She looks at him and smiles. Later that same day, CBCguy notices something on his desk he didn’t notice before: a dvd in a plastic case with felt writing on it: avatar. He picks it up and puts it into a player. He plays and watches it standing up. The sequence of videos of the Avatar distresses 31
the official. He immediately feels compassion for him. He moves a chair over and plops into it – absorbed by the video – oblivious to all else. Time passage. The sequence is finished. He stands up, walks to his desk phone, quick dials a number, and waits. CBCGUY Hey, it’s me.. Yea.. I have something for you. It’s about him.. Can you come over? I don’t trust going outside.. Thanks. He hangs up. He walks to a window overlooking a frosty forest: trees with iceladen branches. He sighs. CBCGUY Where are you.. He says to himself – deep with compassion. FADE OUT
FADE IN: LUNAR PLAY The kids, now in their teens, are playing outside on the lunar landscape. They are chasing each other around in the low gravity – making huge leaps through the vacuum and pretending to hide behind small boulders. They throw dust at each other which seems to hang in midvacuum before slowly settling. Occasionally, they make contact with the dust on their respective spacesuit. Mom and dad are in their bedroom – enjoying their time alone with each other. After making love, they retire to the sunroom on a blanket. They each wear a bedsheet so as not to embarrass the kids if they come back early. Mom bites into an apple and dad lays on his back in his familiar way. She peels a bit of the apple with a knife and plays with the peel on his bare chest. She attempts to tickle him with it. He laughs. AVATAR Who are you? What’s your name? I can’t seem to remember..
32
He teases her. MOM Don’t you remember? You picked me up at a bar last night.. AVATAR Really?! I thought it was YOU who picked ME up? He snatches the apple peel from her hand and pops it into his mouth, chews, and swallows. He then grabs the knife from her other hand and strokes it. It changes form. It lengthens and changes into a rather soft paddle. He attempts to spank her with it but since she’s sitting down, he cannot get clear access to her rump. She laughs at his attempts and squishes his nose with the remainder of the apple playfully. MOM Arthur, I love you so much.. AVATAR You’re just attracted to my power.. It’s very simple. Women love powerful men. She laughs at him. MOM Arthur, I couldn’t care less about your powers. I couldn’t care less if you were paraplegic.. As long as that thing worked. She tickles his crotch. He “protects” his crotch with his hands. MOM Of course I’m joking. Women don’t need sex that much – not like men.. I love you because you love me. The way you look at me. It never changed. Not from the day we met. You had this hunger in your eyes. And it was never satisfied. You still look at me the same. You still love me the same. From the moment you first saw me.
33
He raises himself on his elbows and looks at her intently. She laughs. MOM Not like that. You aren’t aware of it. It’s fully unconscious. Your love for me jumps straight out from your heart, through your eyes, and into mine. She illustrates with her hands. MOM And I’ll follow you to the end of the universe if that’s the only place for us. She begins to cry softly. He tries to comfort her. MOM I’m okay.. She speaks through her tears. MOM If you think about it, we wouldn’t have this time together if it weren’t for the asshole Americans, their bombs, and disease. I’m not grateful to them, but I am grateful for these last six years. I wouldn’t trade them for anything. He bites his bottom lip indecisively. AVATAR So you think we should go.. MOM What else can we do! I’m not gonna sit here and watch you waste away until you die! You are my life! Don’t you understand that?! She grabs his face gently with her hands and holds it close to hers. Tears stream down her face. His expression changes from indecision to surety and confidence. Her love empowers him.
34
AVATAR Okay, we make a world demonstration in New Washington as soon as the kids are ready. He gently touches her hands with his – still on his face. AVATAR To the end of the universe if we must. Together. MOM Together. FADE OUT
FADE IN: REVELATION America has had some time to rebuild Washington since the Avatar and his family were forced into seclusion. Dubbed New Washington, it is a new center of government and commerce. News reports of the rapidly growing city are covered while diminishing reports of the Avatar emphasized. Six years have passed uneventfully on Earth. America has not attacked Iran. In fact, there is a covert allegiance of sorts – designed to provide a united front against the “supreme aggressor”, the Avatar. In spite of the CBC’s release of the Avatar’s footage on the progression of the disease, world sympathy has leaned toward America. The President and his goons are having a mediawide publicbroadcasted meeting about the almost forgotten man. All eyes are watching. PRESIDENT So it’s safe to say we can close the book on the Avatar. He seems to have disappeared for good. GOON5 Yes Mr. President. Some are calling him the Antichrist considering the level of destruction he caused here his last visit.
35
PRESIDENT So this Antichrist is afraid to show his face.. What about those rumors that we supposedly poisoned him or something? GOON5 Some poser, pretending to be the Avatar, claiming to have been infected with some kind of impossible disease was broadcasted by the CBC. There’s no conclusive evidence who he was or what problem he had – mental or otherwise. PRESIDENT Good! So we can move on! What’s next on the agenda? As if by miracle, some force slices horizontally through the building and room, just below the ceiling. The portion above the cut raises slowly at first. No sparks or damaged equipment are visible. No one is screaming for help. All are calmly watching the events unfold. The upper portion continues to raise more quickly. It stops and hovers a couple hundred feet above the lower portion. Fresh air and sunshine stream into the conference room. The President is the only one who seems worried or agitated. A small dot appears overhead and to the side of the floating portion above. One goon calls out. GOON5 Hey! Look there! I see something! He points to the spot. All eyes move up and focus on the dot. It grows in size and soon observers can make out details. It is the Avatar and his family surrounded by a force shield. The family lowers until they are firmly standing on the floor of the conference room. All of their eyes are on the President. They are not smiling. The four of them are all wearing the same simple limegreen jumper which has a beautiful large image of the earth on the front and the word LOVE printed on the back. AVATAR Here is your mentally ill pretender. The Avatar’s daughter is fuming. She is shaking with rage. 36
She calmly walks to the President and grabs him by the collar. The President seems unable to move. She pulls back her fist and readies her punch. She looks at her father. He looks down at his feet. Tears in his eyes. She lets it fly home. Again, again, again. Her mother and brother move in to protect the President from her blows. Other’s move to intercept them. AVATAR STOP! Waves of force emanate from his mouth and body. The walls of the conference room dissolve in puffs of air – as do the surrounding rooms and walls. The “conference room” is now just people seated at a table, the Avatar’s family, and camera crew. She releases the President. His mouth is bloodied but otherwise – only appears shaken. He mouths his thanks to the Avatar. The Avatar nods. AVATAR Let’s continue the broadcasted meeting, shall we? We’re not here to fight. He looks at his daughter. She looks down. AVATAR Since you cannot seem to provide the cure to the disease you gave to me through my family, we’re going to look for a cure in the future. The only problem is – we can’t come back. This will be the last time this generation sees us. Say your goodbyes. The President realizes his opportunity and scrambles toward the Avatar – getting on his knees and begging the Avatar to stay. PRESIDENT We have the cure! It’s right over there! He madly gesticulates in random directions. AVATAR You had your chance. You had six full years to contact me, broadcast a
37
message, offer a cure .. It was you who started this fiasco by kidnapping my family! And now you want me to stay! For what?! PRESIDENT We NEED you! Not for Iran .. For other things.. You don’t understand.. We need you.. I need you.. He grasps at the pantlegs of the Avatar, humiliating himself, sobbing. He hangs his head in shame. The Avatar touches his head with hand, gently. The President seems instantly calmed by his touch. The Avatar pulls him to his feet and embraces him. The President is overwhelmed with brotherly emotion and hugs the Avatar back. After a moment, the daughter separates them and sits the President down in his chair. He is dumbfounded. He quietly repeats. PRESIDENT I need you. I need you. I need you.. The Avatar looks at his wife and asks. AVATAR Are we ready? She nods her head in assent. MOM Mm. BOY Mm. GIRL Mm. The Avatar closes his eyes. The wind picks up. All eyes are moving around – looking for some sign. After a few moments, off to the side of the building, a void begins to form. It is about eight feet up and just beyond the edge of the “floor”. It is a black hole forming – a spherical nothingness, about 10 inches in diameter, which sucks in everything. [Technical note: a black hole of that size, that close to Earth, would probably fairly instantly suck in the atmosphere of the earth and then the earth itself, but it is 38
a testament to his control over matter that allows the Avatar to retain control over the situation.] All but the Avatar watch in utter amazement. Another black hole forms to the left and down, then to the right and down from the first. They are at floor level. Finally, a fourth appears below floor level about eight feet down – right under the first one. They form a square “standing on a corner”. Wind is extremely violent with the Avatar’s eyes still closed in concentration. Inside the square, the image behind begins to dim and progressively gets replaced by nothingness. It is a doorway to the future. The Avatar opens his eyes. AVATAR It’s ready. His daughter looks over to the President who has stopped mumbling to himself. He restrains himself from a repeat show of humiliation. He manages a grimace. She points a finger at him. GIRL YOU restrain yourself. I’m not talking about now. I’m talking about in the future. You gotta tone it down dude. She walks to the edge of the portal. GIRL I’m ready dad. She is standing to the right of the portal. Her brother joins her at her left. He clasps his hands and waits for his father and mother. MOM I cannot understand why you simply could not just let us be.. She says as she walks toward the portal – directing her statement at the seated President as she passes him. Looking at the President while he follows her, the Avatar speaks to him. AVATAR Honey, it’s about power. All they care about is increasing it – entrenching it.
39
He shakes his head and joins his family in front of the portal. He sighs. AVATAR Any final words? He looks at his family. His son shakes his head and looks down. His daughter gets an angry look on her face. GIRL The world already knows what I think! He laughs. She smiles. MOM You all had a chance to make peace with my husband. He could have done so much to help you.. But you started off on the wrong foot. Your power went to your heads. Now, that’s all you seem to care about.. She raises her voice. MOM WILL THAT BE YOUR EPITAPH? She is shaking in rage. Calming her, the Avatar takes her hand. He leads her into the portal. Just before he enters, he looks back and speaks softly to the President. AVATAR Things could have been so different.. The President looks down at his hands. The family walks into the portal. One by one, they fade into the nothingness – until the son remains – just on the threshold. He can hear his sister’s voice on the other side. GIRL Arthur, are you coming! He hesitates. He looks around without feeling. He looks up at the gate. He takes a step back – away from the portal. He looks at the sun. He looks at the section of building still hovering above. The section lowers gently off to the side – coming to rest on the ground without incident. He calls loudly into the gate. 40
BOY I love you! He raises his hand toward the gate. The entire structure dissolves and fades. He has closed the portal. He turns around. He faces the President. The camera zooms in on his beautiful eyes. BOY My turn! NO FADE OUT [ABRUPT CUT TO CREDITS] CREDITS Ministry’s Breath plays with credits (version without 3 min intro). If credit roll exceeds song length, continue with Endorphine’s Dai Yin Mai?
