1. Before the availability of steel and concrete, most bridges were made of wood,rope and/or stone. 2. The Harbour Bridge is strong because it has triangles. 3. Triangles make for a strongstructure because the work off compression and tension. 4. Triangles on the harbourbridge are in the arch because the arch need to be strong in order to keep thebridge up and carry the load. 5. Triangles are strong because of their inherent structural characteristics. 6. Although a basic square column is simple and plain, like round columnsthey can also be fluted. 7. Fluting refers to columns with vertical "lines" carved into them, or grooves. 8. Fluting is typically done on all sides of the column, although with a square column, you could have just one or two sides fluted.
