MESSAGE FROM THE DESK - Dr. E.Srinivasan, Professor and Head Globalisation has flattened the world and paved the way for the opportunities to transcend the physical boundaries of the countries across the world. The current recession scenario cannot last long and indeed, the palpable positive signs have begun to appear on the horizon. The core and knowledge industries have started treading the growth trajectories. As a result, the market is likely to be replete with the opportunities in a couple of months from now. Consequently, it is incumbent upon the students to groom themselves to be industry ready human resource and look forward to capitalize the opportunities. Besides being confident in the domain of study, the students are expected to possess a multitude of soft skills to stay competitive and surge ahead of their peers. I exhort you to introspect on your discernible strengths and weaknesses with ruthless honesty, consolidate your strengths and work on diligently to win over your shortcomings. Upon doing this exercise incessantly, you are certain to refine and emerge as a human resource worthy of emulation. PEC is recognized as one of the front ranking engineering institutes both by the academia and industry. Your seniors who have graduated from this formidable institute over the yesteryears have spread far and wide across the globe occupying coveted positions in industries and universities. Thanks to their scholarship and commitment, several prominent graduate schools abroad regard PEC as a potential feeder institute for their graduate programmes. Academically proficient students with aptitude for learning and research must explore possible opportunities towards pursuing higher studies either in India or overseas and evolve as erudite scholars with a larger goal of contributing to the society as a whole. It is our earnest desire that all our students are of great character conforming to the ethical values in letter and spirit and willing to share their prosperity with others towards creating our egalitarian society. That is the way to make our lives more meaningful and purposeful. My profound thanks to the editorial team for giving me an opportunity to talk to the students through this column.
HAPPENINGS AROUND US Dr P.Dananjayan, Professor, has been deputed as visiting professor, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Inauguration of ECE Studends’ Council The ECE Students’ Council for the academic year 2009-2010 will be inaugurated on 14th september. Dr. G.T.Manohar, Retired Professor, IIT Madras, Chennai will inaugurate and deliver the inaugural address. Completion of Phd by Mrs.M.Tamilarasi, Asst. Prof., Dept. of ECE under the title “STUDIES ON PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS IN MOBILE AD HOC NETWORKS USING ON-DEMAND ROUTING PROTOCOLS” Her research work concentrates on overcoming the shortcomings of the most popular on-demand routing protocols applied in MANETs, namely, Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing. To achieve packet as well as byte overhead reduction and power conservation in DSR, an algorithm called MDSR2 with Energy Management is proposed. An adaptive timeout algorithm and a power saving strategy is incorporated in AODV. A new routing protocol called Hierarchical Time Index Routing (HTIR) is also proposed for the same type of network and a qualitative analysis and performance comparison are presented. Turn in to Green We, the students of Electronics and Communication Engineering, apart from academics take up few social issues and we contribute our might. Students of every year have planted a sampling and it will be taken care till they leave this campus .

FRESHERS’ FEAST - Durga K, B.Tech, Third Year The 31st July, 2009 formed a red letter day for us, the 3rd ECEians as it marked our beginning as leaders, mentors & consequently role models for the younger generation. Yes, it was the most awaited one, “The Freshers’ Day”, a ceremony which lays the foundation for building a good comradeship with our juniors. The celebration begun with the welcoming of our beloved professors followed by the self-introduction by our juniors. Consequently was the then HOD, Dr.P.Dananjayan’s speech which was indeed thought provoking. We were also fortunate enough to hear words of encouragement support from, Dr. E. Srinivasan. A gift even if it is a small thing given, sows the seeds of cordial relationship between the giver and receiver. Presents were given to each of the juniors. We extended our gratitude to our professors for their
presence which decorated our evenings. Then began the fun-filled celebration. A good number of events were conducted. The hustle and bustle in the room showed the development of a good rapport along with care and affection. The function was, indeed a platform to show our event management skills. We were also able to identify the budding talents for which we promise to provide constant support and motivation. It would be unfair if the fact that “we learned a lot from our juniors as they did from us” is not mentioned. It was also a great opportunity for us to prove our efficiency in working as a team. Altogether the experience was fantabulous. Then we snacked and parted off with the satisfaction of having met good counterparts for whom we ought to be paradigms.

NANO-COMMUNICATION Nanotechnology for Wireless Communications - Krishna Bharathi L, M.Tech(WC), Second Year The next-generation high data rate wireless communication systems are expected to offer completely new way to access information and services. The need for higher data transfer rate and bandwidth, along with the requirement for low-cost, high efficiency system implementation, has led to an explosion in new technology development for integrated circuit approaches in RF/ microwave area, RF receiver and transmitter, data storage and even power supply. A complete solution for high system integration of various components is the trend, the 3D System-on-Package (SOP) concept is considered as one of the future solutions. To realize such a complex concept, nanotechnology could play a significant role for continuing innovations in mobile devices. The future cellular and personal communication services are expected to be operating at the frequency bands around 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. Other wireless communication applications operating at Ultra Wideband (UWB) frequency in the range of 3.1-10.6 GHz, the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) operating into the millimeter-wave regime of 10-100 GHz. This rapid expansion of untethered communication applications has raised the requirements of high-efficiency and higher rate RF transceivers in the next-generation communications.
To realize the higher data transfer speed, a highly integrated system is expected such as the integration of all the components on a single package including antenna, filters, frequency synthesizers, monolithic microwave integrated circuits, digital processing and microprocessor control chips, which would meet the needs of more functionality, better performance, low cost and high integrity. Realization of such a highly integrated system requires innovative technologies in fundamental materials, novel device and circuit design, system architecture, and fabrication process; the emerging nanotechnology plays a critical role in realization of the next generation wireless communications. One of the key applications of nanotechnology is in nano-scale electronic devices and systems. Such nanoelectronic devices and nano-photonic devices can be incorporated into the wireless communication components such as RF integrated circuits, large scale integration digital processing and microprocessor control chip which perhaps have a great impact on the communication systems in terms of signal transmission, functionality, power consumption, size of the mobile units etc. In summary, nanotechnology applications in wireless communications are still at the infant stage, but it will make a great impact on the development of wireless technology .

FRENDZ FOR LIFE More Hands To Join - Sivasankar S , B.Tech, Final Year Frendz For Life is a registered non-governmental organization working for the welfare of down trodden students. May 17, 2006 marked the birth of FFL, the day on which FFL Trust was officially registered as a charitable trust. The trust was started under the motivation and guidance of Dr. E. Srinivasan, the advisor of the trust. The organization is conducting many programs for helping the physically challenged, orphan students for pursuing their studies. It is also conducting many awareness camps, blood donation and eye donation camps. The unique thing about the organization is that, the members of the organization are none other than the alumni and the current final year students of Pondicherry Engineering College. The final year students of PEC look into the field activities every year and the fund inflow to the trust is mainly from the members of the trust who have passed out in yesteryears. The Organization celebrated the grand third anniversary function on July 5, 2009. SSP Srikanth was the Chief guest of the function, appreciated the activities of the
organization. Mr. Britto who is the secretary of the organization has forwarded a letter about the organization to ACTION 2020 team, which is a team comprising of youngsters under the guidance of Dr. Abdul Kalam. To our surprise we got an appreciation letter from Dr. Abdul Kalam, appreciating the activities and the field work carried out by FFL team. On 11th August 2009, Mr. Britto had the golden opportunity of meeting the great person Dr. Abdul kalam and he was there to represent Frendz For Life students family from Pondicherry. The biggest achievement is that FFL team has grown from a strength of 15 students to a family of around 150 active young folks as it stands today. Without the help and the support provided by our seniors, it would not have been possible for the us (the team) to reach this position. Juniors who are really interested can join in the organization for helping the physically challenged, orphan students of our nation. Let’s contribute something to the society. Let’s serve the deserved.
