Philip D. Zelikow EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Ms. Erickson, The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, known as the 9-11 Commission, would like to request a copy of CNN's coverage on September, 11, 2001 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Created by the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (P.L. 107-306), the Commission is tasked with writing the authoritative account of the events on 9-11-01 and reporting to Congress and the Administration in May, 2003. Your coverage on that day is indispensable to the Commission's on-going investigation of the exact time and sequence of events on that historic day. In donating the tapes, not only would CNN be assisting the Commission fulfill its mandate, it would also be committing a valuable public service. In return, the Commission would credit CNN for its contribution to the investigation in the final report. Unfortunately, the Commission's initial purchase of "CNN's Breaking News: September 11, 2001" from FDCH/eMedia insufficiently met our needs. The coverage began sometime after the second plane hit the Trade Center. Because the coverage was not time-stamped, the exact time of reporting could not be ascertained from the tape. To be useful to the Commission, the tapes would have to be timestamped and begin at 8:00 a.m. As you consider this request, please visit our website at www.9-1 lcommission.gov to learn more about the Commission, or contact me directly at 202-401-1770. Your assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated by the Commission. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Lisa Sullivan Staff Assistant
