When people think of the deadliest diseases in the world, their minds probably jump to the incurable ones that grab headlines from time to time. But in fact, many of these types of diseases don’t rank in the top 10 causes of worldwide deaths. An estimated 56.4 million people passed away worldwide in 2015, and 68 percent of them were caused by diseases that progressed slowly. Another amazing fact is that most of these diseases are partially preventable. So, what are these diseases and what can we do to prevent them? Read on to find out more…

1. Coronary artery disease

The deadliest disease in the world is coronary artery disease (CAD). It is also called heart disease. CAD occurs when the blood veins that supply blood to the heart become narrowed. If you have high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoke or have diabetes or if you are overweight, then you are at risk. Here are some steps that you can take to avoid this disease: exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Eat lots of fruit and vegetables and avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. 2. Stroke

A stroke occurs when an artery in your brain is damaged. This causes the brain cells not to have enough oxygen and to begin dying within minutes. During a stroke, you feel sudden numbness (not being able to feel anything) or have trouble walking and seeing. If you feel one side of your body suddenly going numb, go directly to a hospital! 3. Lower respiratory infections

A lower respiratory infection is an infection in your airways and lungs. The flu, pneumonia, bronchitis or tuberculosis can cause this type of infection. One of the things you can do to stay healthy is to get the flu vaccine every year. Stay at home and rest until you feel better if you have a respiratory infection, as rest improves healing. 4. Diabetes There are two types of diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas can’t produce insulin. The cause of this form of diabetes isn’t known yet. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t produce enough 2

insulin, or the insulin in the body can’t be used effectively. Type 2 diabetes can be caused by various factors, including a poor diet, lack of exercise, and being overweight. So, what is the secret to staying healthy? A healthy lifestyle is the answer. Make sure that you eat well, exercise regularly and go to your doctor once a year for a regular check-up.
