House Bill 4410 Support

This Letter is to Support house bill 4410 if you have received this letter via email please read page two for the public opinion about this Bill. The Michigan Merit Pathway requires students to take extra credits in math (algebra II), science and social studies for all students with the graduation date of 2011 on up. That is 3 credits that the student cannot use to attend any Career and Technical Educational facilities like the Jackson Area Career Center. Time and choice are being taken away from the student in the hopes that extra math and english class will ready them for a job after graduation. Fact: CTE teaches job skills and offers students a wide variety of career paths that are relevant to todays job market. Fact: Our job market is not one-sized-fits-all, so our training opportunities need to reflect that. Fact: Most students will end up taking the same english and math classes as a core when they attend college making them take the same classes twice. We are looking for support for a bill (HB 4410) that would give students a choice in the future. Choice 1= Take the extra math, science and social study courses and get 3 credits Choice 2= Attend a CTE facility where they have many choices of courses to take for the 3 credits We need your help to protect the future students by giving them choice 2, we do that by writing a 150-200 word letter about how CTE has effected you and why choice 2 is important. Who can write? • Students • Parents • Teachers Things to address in the letter (please include anything that you think could help along with the following topics.) For students • How has CTE changed your life? • What are your plans after the takeing your CTE course? • What would happen if you could not attend a CTE facility because you did not have enough credits? • If given a choice what path would you choose (choice 1 or choice 2) • Write about the skills you have learned in CTE and how you will use them after high school. For teachers • How has the CTE changed your students for the better. • Do you think the CTE course are as rigorous as an extra math and english course? • Include a little bit about how we have implemented math and English into the classroom if it exists. • Include a success story about a student that has attended your class and how CTE has changed their life. • Include any options that we push the students towards after graduation (college - jobs - freelance) • How do you feel about students not being able to attend your CTE facility next year because of the MME. For parents • How has CTE changed your child's life for the better? • What do you think about only having one choice in life? • Have you ever worked at a job that you needed Algebra II?
