Iskandar Jalil The Man inside out He first started pottery at the TTC (Teachers’ Training College) in the early 1960s. However, in the early 1970s, he started studying ceramic engineering which brought him to Nagoya, the center of pottery in Japan. Because of his discipleship in Japanese pottery traditions and aesthetics, his work is deeply influenced by it. Iskandar Jalil has limited his glazes (colours on his ceramics) to a few favourites. However, he is still adventurous in experimenting with other colours. His works from the 1990s developed from his usual Japanese technique to a new style - Islamic Calligraphy. His works are worldfamous. He himself has been in dozens of individual and group ceramic exhibitions around the world. Some of the people who personally own his works are Ex-US President George W. Bush and the Sultan of Brunei. Wow. He has been an external examiner for colleges in Australia and Malaysia. He is retired from teaching but gives private lessons in his home, where he lives happily with wife, Saleha, (a Home Economics teacher) and his two kids.He still gives weekly lectures on pottery at the National University of Singapore.

Ng Eng Teng Ng Eng Teng was born on 12th July 1934, and passed away on 4th November 2001 (aged 67). Known as the grandfather of Singapore sculpture. Eng was known for his figurative sculptures, many of which are found all over Singapore. He graduated from Senior Cambridge Examinations in 1955 and took painting and sculpting classes at the British Council. In the same year, he managed to enter NAFA (Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts) where he showed immense promise as an aspiring and excellent artist/sculptor. One of his teachers, Georgette Chen, saw much potential in him, and since there were no sculptors at the time in Singapore, she saw that’s talent in sculpting should see him with a prosperous future as a renowned sculptor. Eng then graduated from NAFA in 1962 and further studied sculpturing in various schools such as Farnham School of Arts in Surey (a country in the south-east of England). Eng gradually became famous overseas and was awarded with a diploma by the Chartered Society of Designers. However, he missed Singapore, and decided to return mainly for 3 reasons; to set up a work shop to practice his ceramic skills by teaching potterymaking, he was concerned for his family and wanted to provide support them and finally he wanted to help his alma mater. From 4th September 1970, Eng started his career as a full-time sculptor. The following years proved fruitful for Eng but his fame was not to last. In 1995, he was diagnosed with kidney problems and soon passed away.
