Programme: Diploma in Performing Arts Department: Performance & Media Vision To nurture creative people capable of contributing to the development of original, relevant and socially resonant work of good quality for their societies. DIPLOMA IN PERFORMING ARTS The Diploma in Performing Arts programme is unique in offering foundational training and education in two inter-related fields at the same time – theatre and filmmaking. It covers all basic aspects of theatre and filmmaking, which is taught using professional video cameras and editing equipment. Classes include acting, directing, scriptwriting, design, theatre and video production, and history and theory. The programme is structured to ensure a steady development of skills and knowledge over 2 ½ years of studies, with a good balance being kept between hands-on and academic experience. Since the programme is designed to give a solid grounding in both fields, it is ideal for people who are interested in both filmmaking and theatre, as well as those with a preference for only one field. The exposure to essential skills and knowledge in two inter-related fields gives students a professional edge and increases their future options for work and higher education.

The programme is taught by an excellent team of lecturers comprising established and noted filmmakers, theatre practitioners and research-active academics. PROGRAMME OF STUDY Diploma in Performing Arts
YEAR 1 Video Tools How to use the tools of digital video production and post-production – camera, lighting, sound and editing equipment. Media & Communication Covers the human faculties of perception, cognition and sign systems, and the electronic analogue and digital information technologies. Acting & Improvisation Teaches basic acting skills for the actor, including improvisation and analysis. Stage Management Covers the knowledge, practical skills and management techniques needed to run a theatrical production. Theatre Theory, History & Practice Introduces essential terms and concepts needed to understand and appreciate the theatre’s unique functions and qualities.
Thought & Writing Teaches essay-writing skills and related skills in reading and critical thinking. An essential subject needed for reading and writing for other subjects in the curriculum. Cinema, Modernity & Montage Looks at early development of cinema, covers early 20th Century films. Sound & Image Introduces the basics of filmmaking, resulting in a short original video. Acting & Characterisation Teaches the know-how to approach and perform a character. A foundational subject for both stage and screen acting. Script Analysis Teaches a systematic approach to reading and analyzing a script, for the actor, director and designer.
Industrial Internship Attachment Requires students to attach themselves for a period of 12 weeks to companies involved in film production, television production, theatre, or other related fields.
Play & Screen Writing Covers all the stages involved in the process of writing a short stage play and screenplay, from germinating ideas to the gathering of material for writing, developing synopses and treatments, writing drafts, readings and critiques, re-writing, formatting and formal submissions. Theatre Project Led by a lecturer-director, students create a theatrical production and perform it for a public audience by using minimal technical resources. Traditional Malaysian Theatre The theory component covers the different types of traditional performing arts which are found in Malaysia, while the practical component provides performance training in one of these forms.
Final-Year Projects Senior students are required to produce and create two stage and screen projects, including arranging for a public staging or screening of their works.

YEAR 2 Stage Directing Covers the history, theories and principles of stage directing. A foundational subject for stage and screen directing.
Acting & Text 1 Requires students to call on skills already learnt, such as script analysis, locating character’s objectives, and interaction with other characters in a scene. Relevant to stage and screen acting.
Music & Dance for Actors Introduces performance in musical theatre.
Production Design Introduces the theory, techniques and elements of stage production design – set, costumes, lighting and sound. Relevant to screen production design.
Career Management Taught by professionals in the field who impart up-to-date information and skills required for a career in theatre, film and television.
Audio-Video Post-Production 1 Introduces editing on Final Cut Pro system – equipment, running platforms, components, specifications, capabilities, methods used for different programmes, and audio/graphics/effects capabilities. This is a technical course.
Modern Theatre Looks at the beginnings of modern drama and theatre in Europe and traces their development to present-day Europe and Asia.
Audio-Video Post-Production 2 Provides additional technical training in the Final Cut Pro and introduces audio production and post-production and its integration into the advanced video post-production environment.
World Cinema Covers modern cinema from mid-20th Century to the present, including the rise of the auteur and post-colonial and post-modern concerns with ethnic and national identity, the family, gender, and sexuality.
Acting & Directing For The Camera Teaches acting and directing for film and television.
Performance Studies Expands the focus on stage and screen performance to include ritual, play, games, the formation of social and digital networks and organisations, and the great variety of behaviours and performances of daily life, among humans and other species.

ACADEMIC STAFF Lecturers at the Department of Performance & Media come from many backgrounds in film, theatre and academia. They include award-winning directors, actors, writers and academics who are actively engaged in creative practice as well as research. Their combined qualifications, experience and accomplishments makes them a truly outstanding team in the field of arts education in the country. ZAHIM ALBAKRI directed the multiple awarding-winning musicals Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical and P. Ramlee The Musical. He has produced a string of outstanding works as a stage director and actor whose talent is sought after and celebrated in both Malaysia and Singapore. He is a founding member and artistic director and executive producer of the theatre company Dramalab. He trained as an actor at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London, and holds an MA in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University. SOW YEE, AU is an experimental film/video artist whose works and film performances have been shown in Malaysia, Taiwan, Italy and USA. Her work is noted for its range and includes film and video performances, singlechannel experimental film/video and multimedia design for contemporary theatre performances. An MFA holder from the San Francisco Art Institute, her creations explore light and projected images as organic elements in space and time, besides revealing the abstract quality of everyday life. She was a recipient of the inaugural Krishen Jit Astro Fund award in 2006. In 2009, she curated a Malaysian experimental film/video programme for the Experimental Film Festival in Seoul. MARION D’CRUZ is a founder member of Five Arts Centre. She graduated with a BA in Performing Arts and an MA in Dance from Universiti Sains Malaysia and has studied classical, modern and contemporary dance in Malaysia, Indonesia, London and New York. Marion’s focus as an artist has been to create a contemporary Malaysian identity in dance and to make works that speak of what she is passionate about. A pioneering dancemaker in Malaysia, Marion now teaches, produces and choreographs – concentrating more on working with young people in multi-arts work. At the 2006 Boh Cameronian Arts Awards, Marion was awarded the CrossCultural Champion of the Arts Award.

ZALFIAN FUZI is an actor and director with an MA in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University. An associate director of the Instant Café Theatre Company, he jointly runs its FIRSTWoRKS programme with its founding member and artistic director Jo Kukathas to develop new writing for the Malaysian stage. DR. NILOUFER HARBEN holds a PhD from Royal Holloway College, University of London and was a recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies/ Fullbright Fellowship and Harvard/Yenching Fellowship. Specialising in English drama history and literary criticism, she is the author of Twentieth Century English History Plays: From Shaw to Bond. ANNE JAMES was trained in theatre at Universiti Sains Malaysia and Northwestern University (USA). A much respected and awardwinning actor who has performed both locally and internationally, she has had the privilege of working with a number of famous directors and theatre companies including Krishen Jit, Richard Schechner, Ong Keng Sen (TheatreWorks, Singapore), Joe Hasham (The Actors Studio), William Gluth, Hiroshi Koike, Ivan Heng (WildRice, Singapore), Zahim Albakri (Dramalab), Edwin Sumun, Jo Kukathas (Instant Café Theatre Company) and Natalie Hennedige (Cake Theatre, Singapore). ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR RAY LANGENBACH (PhD, Western Sydney University) is a performance artist, documentary filmmaker and art critic. His installations and performance art works have been presented in the United States, Europe and Asia-Pacific. He serves on the board of directors of Performance Studies International and is vice-president of the International Association of Art Critics (Singapore). He periodically serves as Adjunct Professor of Post-Graduate Studies at the Finnish Academy of Fine Art and the Finnish Theatre Academy.

PUAY TIN, LEOW is a published playwright whose major plays Three Children, Ang Tau Mui and Family have been produced in Malaysia, Singapore, Tokyo, Berlin, Cairo, Adelaide, Melbourne, and New York. Her theatre experiments centre around writing and performance, and include the use of modular texts from diverse sources. She graduated with an MFA in Theatre from the University of Hawaii, and currently heads the Department of Performance & Media. RAYMOND MIRANDA writes and directs musicals. His thesis musical, the comfort women, was staged in New York City in 2001. He has an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, USA. He taught at the Communication and Theatre Department of Seton Hall University, USA from 2004-2008. He joined Sunway University College in early 2009, and directed the senior students’ theatre project Pygmalion at the Roof Top Theatre in May of that year. IMRI NASUTION is a versatile filmmaker. His skills include cinematography, sound recording, editing, and even acting, but it is directing that has always been his core strength. Graduated with a diploma in filmmaking, Imri has been directing documentaries, music videos, business programmes and TV series since 1999. He is also a co-founder of Kino-i, a production company that has been playing a key role in nurturing talents by conducting certified trainings and workshops on new film techniques for young people. Together with his team in Kino-i, Imri believes in productive growth through effective knowledge-sharing.

MARK TEH is one of the busiest and most versatile talents in contemporary Malaysian theatre. His projects are particularly concerned with the issues of Malaysian history, education and participation. Starting out in college as a member of the ARTicle 19 and Akshen youth theatre collectives, he has since been engaged in a range of collaborative projects which include facilitating community arts workshops, directing documentary performances, researching and teaching. He was the inaugural recipient of the Most Promising Artist Award at the 2002 Boh Cameronian Arts Awards and is a member of Five Arts Centre. Mark is the creative producer for new media projects such as the PopIN information network for Malaysian youth, The Fairly Current Show and MP3. MELISSA TEOH holds a BA in Theatre (Directing and Production Design) from Pepperdine University, USA. She was an active theatre practitioner in Los Angeles, working as a production stage manager, designer, and in theatre operations before relocating home to Malaysia. Melissa now lectures and works freelance both locally, with theatre companies such as Instant Café Theatre Company and Dama Orchestra, and abroad. AZMYL MD YUSOF a.k.a. AZMYL YUNOR holds a MA (Communication) from RMIT University, Australia. A singer-songwriter, musician, and academic in the area of media and cultural studies, he has shared the stage with acts as diverse as underground punk luminaries Carburator Dung and sound artist Goh Lee Kwang and mainstream icons M. Nasir and Khatijah Ibrahim. He is a co-artistic director of Troubadours Enterprise (which organizes the annual KL Sing Song music showcase and promotes local original music) and a co-founder of the Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM). He is also a member of Projek Wayang with theatre actor and writer Fahmi Fadzil.
It takes perseverance and a lot of hard work to finish this programme as the lecturers, who are also industry practitioners, are passionate and take their job very seriously.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS I’ve got good results for my SPM. So my family and friends think it would be a waste if I joined this programme, but I really love to act and want to learn to direct for film.
What is this programme about? It’s a diploma programme that takes 2 ½ years. What is special is the curriculum. It gives an excellent foundation in both theatre and filmmaking using professional video cameras and editing equipment. The programme is very packed and intensive, so young people who are thinking of joining must be mentally and physically prepared for the challenge. It can be quite a shock for those who think the creative arts is easy, just get up and act or just shoot with the camera. There are books to read and papers to write, and research and exams. Those who do well are self-motivating, focused and have self-discipline. “It’s fun, exciting, challenging. We learn a lot of things, from behind the camera to in front of the camera, on-stage and off.”

How will I know if this programme is for me?
The level of difficulty for our Performing Arts programme is quite high. That is why potential candidates should have done well in their SPM or O-levels, whether in the Science or Arts stream. They should also have a distinction or at least a strong credit in English. Although most of our students join after doing their SPM or O-levels, we also have a few who enrol after completing their CIMP, STPM, diplomas and degree courses. There are also those who come in with work experience.
I don’t really like to study. Is this programme easy? “The programme shattered my impression that the performing arts were a fun and easy-going occupation. It was fun, no doubt, but it also required a great deal of team-work, discipline and passion.”

What about study loans? Fees can be paid using PTPTN loans and EPF funds.
Can I work and study part-time? No, this is a full-time programme. Besides attending classes, students are required to spend time outside of class, including evenings and weekends when necessary, on rehearsals, editing, research, group projects and discussions.

There are between 40-50 production companies in the country. There is demand for local programmes. RTM alone needs 30 to 40 documentaries a year and that’s only documentaries. There are also talk shows, cooking shows, women’s shows and so on. Then there is TV3 and Astro, all wanting local programmes.

After that, offers came from casting agencies to do TV ads, but because of my commitment for theatre – I’ve got a part in Cuci The Musical, directed by Zahim Albakri – I had to forego them. After graduation, I had immediately got back to work. TV3 hit series Sindarella was the first job I worked on both acting and production. After Sindarella, other jobs came in as well – and fast – which I had never expected, including film, drama and commercials.
I am working with Five Arts Centre as a full-time production manager and in my free time, I am an assistant director for the Creative Arts Ministry of Full Gospel Assembly, Sungai Buloh. I intend to seek opportunities to manage touring productions abroad to expand my horizon. This will eventually lead to a greater dream of mine, which is to establish a production company of my own.

Programme: Diploma in Performing Arts Department: Performance & Media Vision To nurture creative people capable of contributing to the development of original, relevant and socially resonant work of good quality for their societies. DIPLOMA IN PERFORMING ARTS The Diploma in Performing Arts programme is unique in offering foundational training and education in two inter-related fields at the same time – theatre and filmmaking. It covers all basic aspects of theatre and filmmaking, which is taught using professional video cameras and editing equipment. Classes include acting, directing, scriptwriting, design, theatre and video production, and history and theory. The programme is structured to ensure a steady development of skills and knowledge over 2 ½ years of studies, with a good balance being kept between hands-on and academic experience. Since the programme is designed to give a solid grounding in both fields, it is ideal for people who are interested in both filmmaking and theatre, as well as those with a preference for only one field. The exposure to essential skills and knowledge in two inter-related fields gives students a professional edge and increases their future options for work and higher education.

YEAR 1 Video Tools How to use the tools of digital video production and post-production – camera, lighting, sound and editing equipment. Media & Communication Covers the human faculties of perception, cognition and sign systems, and the electronic analogue and digital information technologies. Acting & Improvisation Teaches basic acting skills for the actor, including improvisation and analysis. Stage Management Covers the knowledge, practical skills and management techniques needed to run a theatrical production. Theatre Theory, History & Practice Introduces essential terms and concepts needed to understand and appreciate the theatre’s unique functions and qualities.
Thought & Writing Teaches essay-writing skills and related skills in reading and critical thinking. An essential subject needed for reading and writing for other subjects in the curriculum. Cinema, Modernity & Montage Looks at early development of cinema, covers early 20th Century films. Sound & Image Introduces the basics of filmmaking, resulting in a short original video. Acting & Characterisation Teaches the know-how to approach and perform a character. A foundational subject for both stage and screen acting. Industrial Internship Attachment Requires students to attach themselves for a period of 12 weeks to companies involved in film production, television production, theatre, or other related fields.
Play & Screen Writing Covers all the stages involved in the process of writing a short stage play and screenplay, from germinating ideas to the gathering of material for writing, developing synopses and treatments, writing drafts, readings and critiques, re-writing, formatting and formal submissions. Theatre Project Led by a lecturer-director, students create a theatrical production and perform it for a public audience by using minimal technical resources. Traditional Malaysian Theatre The theory component covers the different types of traditional performing arts which are found in Malaysia, while the practical component provides performance training in one of these forms.
Final-Year Projects Senior students are required to produce and create two stage and screen projects, including arranging for a public staging or screening of their works.

ACADEMIC STAFF Lecturers at the Department of Performance & Media come from many backgrounds in film, theatre and academia. They include award-winning directors, actors, writers and academics who are actively engaged in creative practice as well as research. Their combined qualifications, experience and accomplishments makes them a truly outstanding team in the field of arts education in the country. ZAHIM ALBAKRI directed the multiple awarding-winning musicals Puteri Gunung Ledang The Musical and P. Ramlee The Musical. He has produced a string of outstanding works as a stage director and actor whose talent is sought after and celebrated in both Malaysia and Singapore. He is a founding member and artistic director and executive producer of the theatre company Dramalab. He trained as an actor at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London, and holds an MA in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University. SOW YEE, AU is an experimental film/video artist whose works and film performances have been shown in Malaysia, Taiwan, Italy and USA. Her work is noted for its range and includes film and video performances, singlechannel experimental film/video and multimedia design for contemporary theatre performances. An MFA holder from the San Francisco Art Institute, her creations explore light and projected images as organic elements in space and time, besides revealing the abstract quality of everyday life. She was a recipient of the inaugural Krishen Jit Astro Fund award in 2006. In 2009, she curated a Malaysian experimental film/video programme for the Experimental Film Festival in Seoul. MARION D’CRUZ is a founder member of Five Arts Centre. She graduated with a BA in Performing Arts and an MA in Dance from Universiti Sains Malaysia and has studied classical, modern and contemporary dance in Malaysia, Indonesia, London and New York. Marion’s focus as an artist has been to create a contemporary Malaysian identity in dance and to make works that speak of what she is passionate about. A pioneering dancemaker in Malaysia, Marion now teaches, produces and choreographs – concentrating more on working with young people in multi-arts work. At the 2006 Boh Cameronian Arts Awards, Marion was awarded the CrossCultural Champion of the Arts Award.

ZALFIAN FUZI is an actor and director with an MA in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University. An associate director of the Instant Café Theatre Company, he jointly runs its FIRSTWoRKS programme with its founding member and artistic director Jo Kukathas to develop new writing for the Malaysian stage. DR. NILOUFER HARBEN holds a PhD from Royal Holloway College, University of London and was a recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies/ Fullbright Fellowship and Harvard/Yenching Fellowship. Specialising in English drama history and literary criticism, she is the author of Twentieth Century English History Plays: From Shaw to Bond. ANNE JAMES was trained in theatre at Universiti Sains Malaysia and Northwestern University (USA). A much respected and awardwinning actor who has performed both locally and internationally, she has had the privilege of working with a number of famous directors and theatre companies including Krishen Jit, Richard Schechner, Ong Keng Sen (TheatreWorks, Singapore), Joe Hasham (The Actors Studio), William Gluth, Hiroshi Koike, Ivan Heng (WildRice, Singapore), Zahim Albakri (Dramalab), Edwin Sumun, Jo Kukathas (Instant Café Theatre Company) and Natalie Hennedige (Cake Theatre, Singapore). ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR RAY LANGENBACH (PhD, Western Sydney University) is a performance artist, documentary filmmaker and art critic. His installations and performance art works have been presented in the United States, Europe and Asia-Pacific. He serves on the board of directors of Performance Studies International and is vice-president of the International Association of Art Critics (Singapore). He periodically serves as Adjunct Professor of Post-Graduate Studies at the Finnish Academy of Fine Art and the Finnish Theatre Academy.

PUAY TIN, LEOW is a published playwright whose major plays Three Children, Ang Tau Mui and Family have been produced in Malaysia, Singapore, Tokyo, Berlin, Cairo, Adelaide, Melbourne, and New York. Her theatre experiments centre around writing and performance, and include the use of modular texts from diverse sources. She graduated with an MFA in Theatre from the University of Hawaii, and currently heads the Department of Performance & Media. RAYMOND MIRANDA writes and directs musicals. His thesis musical, the comfort women, was staged in New York City in 2001. He has an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, USA. He taught at the Communication and Theatre Department of Seton Hall University, USA from 2004-2008. He joined Sunway University College in early 2009, and directed the senior students’ theatre project Pygmalion at the Roof Top Theatre in May of that year. IMRI NASUTION is a versatile filmmaker. His skills include cinematography, sound recording, editing, and even acting, but it is directing that has always been his core strength. Graduated with a diploma in filmmaking, Imri has been directing documentaries, music videos, business programmes and TV series since 1999. He is also a co-founder of Kino-i, a production company that has been playing a key role in nurturing talents by conducting certified trainings and workshops on new film techniques for young people. Together with his team in Kino-i, Imri believes in productive growth through effective knowledge-sharing.

MARK TEH is one of the busiest and most versatile talents in contemporary Malaysian theatre. His projects are particularly concerned with the issues of Malaysian history, education and participation. Starting out in college as a member of the ARTicle 19 and Akshen youth theatre collectives, he has since been engaged in a range of collaborative projects which include facilitating community arts workshops, directing documentary performances, researching and teaching. He was the inaugural recipient of the Most Promising Artist Award at the 2002 Boh Cameronian Arts Awards and is a member of Five Arts Centre. Mark is the creative producer for new media projects such as the PopIN information network for Malaysian youth, The Fairly Current Show and MP3. MELISSA TEOH holds a BA in Theatre (Directing and Production Design) from Pepperdine University, USA. She was an active theatre practitioner in Los Angeles, working as a production stage manager, designer, and in theatre operations before relocating home to Malaysia. Melissa now lectures and works freelance both locally, with theatre companies such as Instant Café Theatre Company and Dama Orchestra, and abroad. AZMYL MD YUSOF a.k.a. AZMYL YUNOR holds a MA (Communication) from RMIT University, Australia. A singer-songwriter, musician, and academic in the area of media and cultural studies, he has shared the stage with acts as diverse as underground punk luminaries Carburator Dung and sound artist Goh Lee Kwang and mainstream icons M. Nasir and Khatijah Ibrahim. He is a co-artistic director of Troubadours Enterprise (which organizes the annual KL Sing Song music showcase and promotes local original music) and a co-founder of the Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM). He is also a member of Projek Wayang with theatre actor and writer Fahmi Fadzil.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS I’ve got good results for my SPM. So my family and friends think it would be a waste if I joined this programme, but I really love to act and want to learn to direct for film.
What is this programme about? It’s a diploma programme that takes 2 ½ years. What is special is the curriculum. It gives an excellent foundation in both theatre and filmmaking using professional video cameras and editing equipment. The programme is very packed and intensive, so young people who are thinking of joining must be mentally and physically prepared for the challenge. It can be quite a shock for those who think the creative arts is easy, just get up and act or just shoot with the camera. There are books to read and papers to write, and research and exams. Those who do well are self-motivating, focused and have self-discipline. “It’s fun, exciting, challenging. We learn a lot of things, from behind the camera to in front of the camera, on-stage and off.”

How will I know if this programme is for me?
The level of difficulty for our Performing Arts programme is quite high. That is why potential candidates should have done well in their SPM or O-levels, whether in the Science or Arts stream. They should also have a distinction or at least a strong credit in English. Although most of our students join after doing their SPM or O-levels, we also have a few who enrol after completing their CIMP, STPM, diplomas and degree courses. There are also those who come in with work experience.
I don’t really like to study. Is this programme easy? “The programme shattered my impression that the performing arts were a fun and easy-going occupation. It was fun, no doubt, but it also required a great deal of team-work, discipline and passion.”

There are between 40-50 production companies in the country. There is demand for local programmes. RTM alone needs 30 to 40 documentaries a year and that’s only documentaries. There are also talk shows, cooking shows, women’s shows and so on. Then there is TV3 and Astro, all wanting local programmes.

I want to do a degree in film or theatre eventually. Where can I go? We have formal agreements with three reputable institutions abroad for transferring to a first-degree course. Students with good results are eligible for credit waivers of two years.

After that, offers came from casting agencies to do TV ads, but because of my commitment for theatre – I’ve got a part in Cuci The Musical, directed by Zahim Albakri – I had to forego them. After graduation, I had immediately got back to work. TV3 hit series Sindarella was the first job I worked on both acting and production. After Sindarella, other jobs came in as well – and fast – which I had never expected, including film, drama and commercials.
I am working with Five Arts Centre as a full-time production manager and in my free time, I am an assistant director for the Creative Arts Ministry of Full Gospel Assembly, Sungai Buloh. I intend to seek opportunities to manage touring productions abroad to expand my horizon. This will eventually lead to a greater dream of mine, which is to establish a production company of my own.
