We are now affiliated with Lancaster University in moving towards our goal to becoming a world class tertiary institution with superior tutorship and up-to date facilities in a university campus environment. Supporting all students and programs at the Sunway University College are computing facilities which include thirteen computer labs for teaching and practical training. These labs are equipped with up-to-date hardware and software, including Apple Macintosh, Linux and Windowsbased computers. At our Tun Hussien Oon library, the Multimedia Resource Centre houses another 138 computers for students’ course assignment work and internet access.

Lancaster University Consistently rated as one of the top 10 UK universities, Lancaster University is a research intensive and student-centered university with a stimulating and innovative learning environment. The University is committed to the pursuit of innovative and cutting-edge research, and has a long and successful history of working with international ICT companies through its prestigious departments of Computing and Communication Systems. Companies include major telecommunications network operators, equipment manufacturers and software providers such as Microsoft, BT Labs, Orange, Cisco, Nokia and Ford. 2

The Computing Department is an international centre of excellence in Computer Science research, ranked amongst the top ten Computer Science Departments in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. The department is housed in InfoLab21, which is the University’s world-class research, development and business centre in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). InfoLab21 has state-of-the-art research laboratories and facilities to support the University’s world-class research activities. InfoLab21’s Knowledge Business Centre also works to which bring industry and academic research closer together, by supporting technology transfer and research commercialization. The partnership between Sunway University College and Lancaster University would bring about significant contribution to both the MSc programmes, especially in merging latest developments in the computing world into a vibrant and practical classroom environment in Malaysia.

MSc in Mobile Systems About the Programme The MSc in Mobile Systems is a flexible and practical programme offered by Sunway University College’s School of Computer Technology in collaboration with the Computing Department of Lancaster University. Delving into the fields of networking and mobile computer & communication, this course explores and demystifies the technical intricacies of understanding, designing and developing mobile systems – from mobile content and application, to communication protocols and network architectures. The programme will be conducted as a series of flexible block-mode teaching modules with lectures, discussions, tutorials and hands-on practical sessions; and will be delivered by suitably qualified academic staff from both Sunway University College and Lancaster University. This Master’s degree is by coursework and is offered on a part-time basis. It is especially designed for those wishing to combine work and study.

The Modules The programme consists of six taught modules and one personal thesis project, distributed over a period of two years of part-time study. The six modules are:• • • • • •

Module Descriptions

Networking & the Internet The Internet is poised to play an increased role in all aspects of business and life. New Internet services, including voice and video, as well as data, will be deployed to support a wealth of new networked applications. The goal of this module is to describe the fundamental issues arising in such multiservice networks, and to give students an in-depth understanding of the technologies that have been, or will be, deployed in the Internet to solve these issues.

Communication Fundamentals This module provides the underpinning information required for a fundamental understanding of modern digital communication systems and their associated signal processing techniques. It provides the analytical basis and practical understanding on which students majoring in signal processing, wireless broadband and mobile communications or satellite communications can build in subsequent modules.

Mobile Communications This module introduces students to a range of mobile technologies exploring access and propogation fundamentals, communication systems such as 2G and 3G networking systems as well as QoS and IP protocols. The module will finish with a study of 4G technologies including exploration of integration issues for WiMax and WiFi into mobile cellular systems.

Distributed Systems This module aims to familiarise students with the middleware tools and techniques increasingly used to build large scale modern computing applications and services. It offers an in-depth look at the range of modern middleware techniques, including OMG/CORBA and RM-ODP. Students will be able to explore hands-on aspects of these technologies as well as the more theoretical architectures. At the end of the course students will have a better understanding of the different distributed technologies and will be better able to make decisions on the choice of middleware technologies for different problems.

Mobile Computing Recent developments in portable devices and high-bandwidth, ubiquitous wireless networks have made mobile computing a reality. Indeed, it is widely predicted that within the next few years access to Internet services will be primarily from wireless devices, with desktop browsing the exception. Such predictions are based on the huge growth in the wireless phone market and the success of wireless data services such as SMS in Europe and NTT Docomo in Japan. In this module, we incorporate current research into the design and implementation of systems and applications software for use in mobile environments.

Network & Systems Security With more and more companies and institutions relying on systems connected to the public Internet, Internet systems security has become a major concern. The goal of this module is to provide an introduction to the process of networked systems security. More specifically, this module reviews network and system security issues and threats, and gives a broad view of network and system security services and mechanisms, whose understanding is essential in the design and implementation of security strategies for a networked environment.

Personal Thesis Project The topics for the thesis project may be chosen in any related area, made in consultation with the assigned supervisor and with the approval of the School of Computer Technology, Sunway University College.

Duration of the Programme 2 years 4

MSc in Computer Science (by research)

About the Programme The Msc in Computer Science programme is a research-focused Master’s degree designed for those wishing to enhance their knowledge and skills in pursuing a higher degree or a career in research-based organizations. For added flexibility, students may opt to pursue this programme either on a part-time or full-time basis.
