At the Annual Congregational Meeting, Cantor Sharlein and I presented our idea for a “bima makeover”. For many years I have discussed, both publicly and privately, my concerns about our sanctuary worship space. I don’t like that my reading desk is so far above and so far away from the congregation, that there is a wall separating us, that the Rabbi Joseph P. Klein cantor/choir is “all the way” on the other side of the bima, and that our bima is not handicap accessible. Over the years, I have explored the possibility of major renovations, and Cantor Sharlein and I have this past year tried minor adjustments and changes to bring us “into” the congregation so that worship becomes more of a shared spiritual moment, and less of an elevated leadership directing those in the pews below. Over the past several months the Cantor and I realized that while not making very expensive or extensive modifications to our bima, we could accomplish much of what we want. Our plan is to extend the bima from the second step (or perhaps third step) up from the sanctuary floor, out into the congregation about 4 or 5 feet. (We have enough sanctuary carpet to cover the extension) We would bring my reading desk to the middle of this extension, where the Cantor and I would stand. It would mean that we’d be standing one foot (perhaps 18”) above the floor, in front of the wall. We would remove the front pews on either side, and we would have a ramp leading up to this extension along the western bima wall. For the High Holidays and for weddings we would return my reading desk to its current position, but for all others sanctuary services, the Cantor and I would lead worship from this extension. Members who have heard our presentation have commented that this would put the visual focus of worship in the center, with the reading desk lifting one’s eyes to the Ark, which leads up to the 10 Commandments on the back wall. Instead of visually turning from one side of the bima to the other, we would bring it all together in the center. We will preserve the integrity of our sanctuary design, while bringing our worship leaders into the congregation—a reflection of the warm and comfortable, friendly and welcoming congregation that we are.

As my first year at Temple Emanu-El draws to a close, I thank you for welcoming me into the community as your cantor. It has been an honor to get to know so many of our adults, children, and teens – at life-cycle events and prayer services, over Share Shabbat dinners and in the classroom.... I look forward to deepening these relationships and developing new ones in the year to come. I have shared with many that Michigan feels not too different from New Jersey Cantor Darcie N. Sharlein where I grew up, but one striking difference is the time of sunset, about 45 minutes later here than on the East coast. This is most apparent during the summer, when the late sunsets seem almost magical, as if time is suspended. I hope that you will have many chances this summer to enjoy these slower, longer days and the sun’s reluctant descent. You may enjoy reading the following poem, written by Jacob Glatstein and translated by Ruth Whitman, during one of our late Michigan sunsets (it’s found in Mishkan T’filah in the Havdalah service, but can also be meaningful on Friday night or perhaps a peaceful weekday evening). I’ll let you in on a secret about how one should pray the sunset prayer. It’s a juicy bit of praying, like strolling on grass, nobody’s chasing you, nobody hurries you. You walk toward your Creator with gifts in pure, empty hands. The words are golden, their meaning is transparent, it’s as though you’re saying them for the first time. If you don’t catch on that you should feel a little elevated, you’re not praying the sunset prayer. The tune is sheer simplicity, you’re just lending a helping hand to the sinking day. It’s a heavy responsibility. You take a created day and you slip it into the archive of life, where all our lived-out days are lying together. The day is departing with a quiet kiss. It lies open at your feet while you stand saying the blessings. You can’t create anything yourself, but you can lead the day to its end and see clearly the smile of its going down. See how whole it all is, not diminished for a second, how you age with the days that keep dawning, how you bring your lived-out day as a gift to eternity. (Mishkan T’filah, p. 611)

Now more than ever,
EVERY CAN COUNTS Please note: “Plus a Can for the Chaveet” message at all Temple meals.
“Reform Jews are committed to Social Justice. Even as Reform Jews embrace ritual, prayer and ceremony more than ever, we continue to see social justice as the jewel in the Reform Jewish crown. Like the prophets we never forget that God is concerned about the everyday, and that the blights of society take precedence over the mysteries of heaven. A Reform synagogue that does not alleviate the anguish of the suffering is a contradiction in terms.” Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President URJ In a timely effort to help “alleviate the anguish of the suffering,” our congregation’s Social Action Committee is promoting - PLUS A CAN - FOR THE CHAVEET. Let us feed the hungry as we feed ourselves at luncheons or dinners at temple. All we ask is that you bring a can of wholesome food whenever you enjoy a meal at Temple Emanu-El. It takes a congregation to help the needy and the vulnerable. Temple Emanu-El: Where You Belong

Here are some of the highlights of the 2008-09 school year. Apologies for those fine educational experiences I don’t have room to include. The Hanukah Happening Holiday Extravaganza introducing the M.A.C.A.B.E.E. Awards (Music And Culture Bolstering Educational Excellence), featured talented students k-12. The Machon Geoff Berdy (4th, 5th, 6th, 7th grade) family Mezuzah project, The D’or to D’or (Generation to Generation) trips to Evergreen and the Heritage Senior Living Centers by second, fourth and fifth grades. Also: the first grade’s project that donated scores of books to a Detroit school without a library, and their trip to Yad Ezra. $200 was raised by Lynn Cooper’s fifth grade for Social Action’s Brovary project, Kindergarten had a great time at Shalom Street’s Matzah Factory, each 3rd grader made a real shofar and Havdallah candles, the sixth grade participated in the Artist in the School’s project with Mary Gilhuly creating mosaic mirrors on display at the “Picture Yourself In Israel” dinner, which also included art work from kindergarten through seventh grade. At Monday night school: the Leadership Institute for Teens dinner speaker series and mini-conference in Ann Arbor, celebration of Jewish involvement in Civil Rights in honor of Martin Luther King Day, the introduction of Teens for Tikkun social action group and the Confirmation class trip to New York.
Summer is going all too quickly as we get ready for Session III of Day Camp. Our Camp Run About campers have been enjoying fun in the sun with water play, creative movement, picnic lunches and Bubbles the Clown, just to highlight some of our activities. Our Camp Get Away children will be starting the Session II Safety Town program under the Eileen Brand direction of head teacher Janet Sigmon. The campers will visit the Michigan State Police Post as part of their Safety Town Unit. A field trip to the health exploration station with a presentation of “Stranger Danger” is part of our summer program. A magic performance by Ben Spitzer, along with swimming at the JCC pool have filled our days. Everyone has enjoyed our camp Shabbat sing-alongs with Rabbi Klein and Cantor Sharlein. Summer Slices has been a tasty highlight of our summer program as we offered optional pizza lunches on Wednesdays. Safety Town graduation will be held on Thursday, July 23. Our Session III camp program begins on Monday, July 27th. A trip to Red Oaks Water Park, “Rumpelstiltskin” at the Marquis Theater, as well as a special performance from Paula Doak highlight this session. It is unfortunate that often we find the problem of bullying within our schools. Pre-schoolers complaints of being picked on are sometimes dismissed by parents with the response of “just ignore it.” According to Parent & Child magazine, findings suggest we really should listen more carefully. They showed that 1 in 10 children between the ages of four and six have been bullied. Preschool bullying often includes kicking, fighting, punching and shoving. By the age of three, we need to start teaching our children how to respond to bullying so that they will not be a victim. Teach children to use phrases like “I’m mad,” or “I’m sad.” Encourage assertiveness in your children; don’t speak for them. Also teach them to look their friends in the eye when they speak. We want all of our children to feel secure and confident.
Collaborations with the Early Childcare Center included hosting Time for Tots at the Purim Carnival and the addition of several holiday programs. New for tots through the Young Family Chavurah (formerly Young Family Shabbat) was the “Fam-Jam” music program in November. Temple Emanu-El Religious School participated in the Congregational School Initiative sponsored by the Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education, which evaluated our programs, conducted parent and teacher surveys, interviewed parents, students and staff and issued a report helping us focus our efforts on achieving educational excellence.
School begins on Tuesday, September 8th, with regular classes in session, including extended care. If you have not yet enrolled for fall please do so as soon as possible to accommodate the schedule of your choice.
The Parent Teacher Organization continued as a small but dedicated group led by Linda Tikey. As usual, they did a wonderful job with the Purim carnival. They also hosted a parent talk based on the book “Blessings of a Skinned Knee” and helped with the Parent Appreciation Brunch. Plans are under way to recruit fresh faces to the PTO.
Our infant program is open year round and will remain open the last week in August to meet the needs of our working families. Please call the Nursery office for information on all of our programs. We look forward to welcoming many of our infants into our Toddler Room at the Temple.
Youth Group highlights: Thanks to a generous donation from Richard and Julie Zussman in honor of their children, Temple Emanu El has a new “Teen Lounge” which TEMTY (high school youth group) is currently working on

Jacob enjoys playing sports and video games with his friends and looks forward to spending his summer working part-time at Ray's Plants and Flowers and going to Camp Tamarack. Jacob volunteered at Yad Ezra for his mitzvah project. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with our friends and family. Temple Emanu-El: Where You Belong

[from my report at the Annual Congregational Meeting] Fiscal year 2008-09 was a difficult one for our Temple, our members and for most of the world. Yet, it was also incredibly rewarding, for despite the financial challenges, the lay leaders, staff and members accomplished a tremendous amount on many fronts. In times like these living up to our mission Susan J. Kirschner is more important than ever and we are creatively and compassionately providing the services that make this a sustaining community. The yearly changes in lay leadership keep us in touch with our members’ changing needs/desires/priorities. But it is always poignant to say goodbye and thank you to those who have supported and led us in so many initiatives. Dolores Galea will be Immediate Past President, but my thanks to her for her two years as president, during which she accomplished so much and dealt successfully with so many challenges. Aron Kominars will stay on the board but is stepping down as Administrative Vice President after coping creatively with the endless needs and occasional surprises our [gracefully] aging building presents. Michael Benghiat lent us his knowledge as a dedicated Financial Vice President and Elissa Driker-Ohren channeled her energy and dedication to a thorough examination of Board and staff roles. Sheldon Klein has provided support and solutions as Financial Vice President, President and Immediate Past President and website maven. It was an honor to work with them, as well as with Pat Chomet, Glenn Lapin, Rena Friedberg and the members of our Board of Trustees, who put in countless hours on behalf of Temple. Steve Permut is ready to take on the presidency and I look forward to working with him and the new and returning lay leaders.
Reminder about your July Temple billing Per Temple policy, members who paid standard dues or below-standard dues in the year ending 6/30/2009 and did not return a dues form or contact us prior to the dues renewal deadline of June 9 automatically default to being billed standard dues of $1,920 for the 2009-10 year. Please contact Susan Kirschner if you have any questions or need another copy of the membership dues renewal form. If you are facing difficult times contact Dolores Galea, Susan Kirschner or Treasurer Fred Frank to discuss, in absolute privacy, your specific concerns and needs. Thank you!

Temple Emanu-El Bulletin • JUly/August 2009
Thanks to the efforts of Rabbi Klein, Cantor Sharlein, Eileen Brand and Geoff Berdy I am always confident in the high quality of our programs and services. I am honored to be part of this cohesive, competent and creative team. We rely so heavily on our support staff. Many a time I might have toppled had they not been there with sleeves rolled up and smiles on their faces. A standing “O” to Abby, Faye, Pat, Charles, Anatoly, Slava and William. A grateful farewell to Rhonda and a warm greeting to Beth Reider who joins us as part-time education assistant. And, oh, our volunteers. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. The efforts of every member who comes in and plans an event, puts labels on our bulletin, bakes for an oneg - I celebrate you. I spend a lot of time on thank yous and kudos because I truly am in awe of what we accomplish by combining our talents, dedication and time. We are a service organization and it is people power that enables us to offer those services. Remarks by Dolores, Rabbi and the Cantor and reports by the Vice Presidents and other senior staff covered the high points of this past year. Significant improvements to our building and grounds that were accomplished on incredibly slim budgets thanks in great part to the efforts of Judy Greenwald. Tina Bonner and her daughter, Meagan and the garden chavurah kept our grounds a delight to behold. Steve Permut discussed the budget. In recognition of the difficult financial times we found a way to not increase dues or tuition rates in 2009-10, but we ask those who are able to make a voluntary donation to allow us to help those who need dues relief. There wasn’t much fat to cut when we realized we could not take Lech Lecha income into our operating budget in 2009-10 and decided not to raise rates. Since, as with most service organizations, a little over 75% of our budget is composed of expenses related to personnel, we were forced to cut staff and maintenance hours in administration, education and the ECC. Salaries were frozen. Health insurance deductibles and employee contributions were raised. As I look to next year and beyond, I keep thinking of the lyrics to an old camp song: “Make new friends, but keep the old / One is silver and the other gold.” We are in times of great upheaval and our ability to respond wisely and in a timely manner to change will be crucial. Our old friends are vital to our continuity—they are our “living treasures.” Our new friends keep us in touch with the changes in the community around us and enable growth. The energy and commitment of both will enable us to thrive.

Hebrew Free Loan, metro Detroit’s oldest Jewish agency, is looking to help our neighbors. With the
deteriorating economic climate, many individuals and families who never thought that they would need financial assistance are looking for help. These are our friends and family who live in the state of Michigan. And now their needs are greater than ever. Hebrew Free Loan can help by providing interest-free loans for a wide range of needs, including living expenses, job re-training, tuition assistance, summer camp programs, medical and dental expenses, small business start-up costs, and much more. To be eligible for an interest-free loan, the applicant must be Jewish, a Michigan resident of legal age and have the financial ability to make monthly payments. The application process includes a phone interview, a personal interview and the signature of two co-signers. Once the paperwork is complete, a credit report is obtained on the co-signers, a promissory note is signed and a check quickly issued. For more information on Hebrew Free Loan’s services, call our office at 248.723.8184 or visit our Web site at www.hfldetroit.org. -10- Temple Emanu-El Bulletin • JUly/August 2009
