Study Guide Ch. 1 1. Scandinavia discovered it early on the northeastern part, but did not stay long. The Spanish were the first to truly discover it with Christopher Columbus on the Eastern coast; he thought that it was India. 2. Their drive for more cheap goods and slaves. Also the good old need to conquer more land and people. 3. It killed off most of the population with diseases for the most part. Not to mention the slavery and mistreatment of the Native Americans. 4. The conquistadors were set there for economic reasons and religious both. They completely dominated the Native Americans for land and put them into slavery. The settlement in New Mexico was also built for religious purposes. 5. Tobacco was an item in high demand, and so slaves were taken to harvest and make more tobacco. 6. The Spanish essentially went there to completely dominate the Americas, and they could be successful because they were so far ahead. The French only went there to explore. That is the same with Europe. Terms Colonization – To populate an area with your own people. Encomienda – The government could give Indians to colonists if the colonists would promise to Christianize them, it was essentially slavery. Aztec Empire – The Aztec empire was based in Mexico and was the ruling power for the most part. They had many sacrificial ceremonies to appease the gods or just out of celebration. Hernando Cortes – He was the conquistador that took down the Aztec Empire. He was thought to be the Aztec god so he was allowed into the capitol unopposed. He then was attacked by the Aztecs because of his lust for gold; and then finally laid siege to the city and took it.
