Student Response and Assessment Tools Lesson Idea Name: I Can Multiply Kahoot Content Area: Math Grade Level(s): 5th Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.OA.4 Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers using the inverse relationship of multiplication and division. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations, 8 × ? = 48, 5 = □ ÷ 3, 6 × 6 = ?. Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The game style learning method will engage students in a new and growing technological age. Kahoot will keep their attention in a competitive learning environment while practicing the standards they have been learning in class. Students will be awarded points for the answers they get correct. They can see themselves on the leaderboard. For students who need extra practice, they can write down the question and discuss with the teacher or their classmates after the game has ended. This is great for visual learners. Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce the SRT activity. Prior to completing this activity, students will have been learning about multiplication and their times tables. The class will have explored multiple ways to identify the missing variable in a multiplication problem. It will be used after some retention, but not mastery. The game will provide the students with extra help. Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply): x Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) x To illuminate common misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge x Test preparation x Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain): Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Spring 2018_SJB

Student Response and Assessment Tools During the SRT activity, students will rigorously answer multiplication problems as they compete with their classmates for the top spot. This will test their knowledge on multiplication and give the teacher an understanding of where the students are academically on this subject. The teacher will control this game from his/her desktop and move between the questions. Handheld devices that can access WI-Fi are needed for the students. This can be an iPad, iPod, their desktop, or even their phones. The activity should last no more than 30 minutes (depending on discussion and class participation) Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply): x Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No ☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions? x Yes ☐ No ☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.) Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and display correct response to the class after the SRT activity? x Yes ☐ No Why or why not? Yes, in order for the students to learn from the activity, I will pre-select correct answers that will show once they have answered the question. Afterwards, I will also go over all of the questions for additional clarification. Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the SRT activity, students can share problems they need more understanding for. As a class, we will go over all of the problems together. Following the discussion, I will give them another multiplication worksheet to complete as classwork. This will give them additional practice. How will the data be used? As a result of this activity, data on the student’s learning progress will be recorded. This will give the teacher a clear understanding of where the students are on the subject of multiplication. For students who reach the top 5 spots on the leaderboard, they may be awarded candy or a small reward. The teacher will analyze this data and use it to determine whether or not he/she should move to the next topic in mathematics. Additionally, for students who struggled a little more, the teacher can provide extra support (websites, worksheets, etc.) for the students. Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I have never tried Kahoot for my own classroom setting. This will be a fun way to assess their knowledge and keep their attention. I hope to be able to learn from this first experience and continue to use it in the classroom to support student learning. It also pushes students to work harder when they know they are working toward a goal/reward. I hope to make fun and easy, yet content based work for my students. Reflective Practice: This activity could be the approach that one student needed to understand the content. Additionally, having students think at a quicker pace about their times tables allows them to retain the information at a quicker rate, like with repetition. To further extend the lesson, I could have students create their own problems after and solve them. Other technological tools that could be used would probably be other websites/apps that aid in multiplication factors.
