Executive Summary

Street Vendors: Their Business Problems and Solutions

1. Introduction Street vendor is a very familiar person in Bangladesh, specially in urban areas. Everyday we have to purchase a lot of products, foods or takes services from street vendors. But we only have a little knowledge about their background, lifestyle and day to day business activities. To gather information about street vendors I visited Gazipur City and talked with three street vendors. The rest of the report explores my gathering information about them in detail.

1.1 Objectives of the study     

To know about street vendors background To know the day to day activities To find out the challenges faced by the street vendors while operating the business To provide recommendations for the betterment of the street vendors To improve our communication and writing skill

1.2 Location of the study The research took place at Joydebpur in Gazipur City. Joydebpur is the core center of this district. Lots of street vendors of different categories operate their business in this area. Among them I have met three street vendors operating different business in Joydebpur bus-stand bazaar road area .

1.3 Need for the study Street vendors are an integral part in our economy. They contribute a lot to the economic growth of our country. They make our day to day life easier but their actual condition is not up to the mark in Bangladesh. Usually their financial condition is not strong. Moreover, most of the time they suffer for security, sustainability and friendly business policy. So we need to know about their background , lifestyle, financial condition, business problems thoroughly and take necessary steps to support them to overcome those barriers . In this regard, research is needed to be performed in regular basis.

1.4 Methodology To gather information about street vendors I have reached three street vendors. At first I tried to find street vendor who was not busy in his activities. I went to his location and purchased a product. In the meantime I started oral conversation with him regarding the entrepreneur’s name, age, family, present address, home address, product line, challenges he faces to operate the business and the solutions he makes. In took notes of all the information that I got from them.

1.5 Limitations of the study    

Lack of experience to build a proper communication Some street vendors expressed their unwillingness to take photo of them Some totally denied to give any kind of information Sometimes they did not want to tell about the problem they face

2 Street Vendors’ Profile This part portrays three street vendors’ background, their nature of business, the challenges they face and the solutions to the challenges.
