My Story My MYCA Neighborhood My name is Meredith Chambers. I am a grade 6 teacher at Cherry Hill Public School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. It had taken me quite some time to settle into living here on my own, you see I had decided to move here two years ago after my husband Gerald passed away. For the first while, I felt quite alone, I didn’t have any friends here, I didn’t know my neighbors, and I am surely not the type to go gallivanting around town. I’d much prefer the comforts of a small town community. It wasn’t until our neighborhood became Networked that I truly began to feel at home here. That same secure feeling that I had grown used to when I was at home with Gerald. I felt safe. Our community here in Cherry Hill has always been a relatively safe one, until last year when there was a string of houses set ablaze by vandals. Senseless acts of destruction! Soon after, the HSS office issued our community this wonderful device they call the Myca network. I believe it stands for MY Community Association. The device they gave us is a thin sheet of plastic with a screen on one side, a speaker and a few buttons on the other. The whole thing is no bigger than a little calculator, I usually keep it in my purse when I’m out, and keep it close by when I’m at home.
My Story CONTINUED It wasn’t long until I received my first message from MYCA It was a Thursday afternoon; I was just leaving the school when I heard the distinct clicking coming from my day-timer. MYCA needed to tell me something Patricia, who lives just a few doors down from me, has sent out an urgent message. “Patricia: Someone is breaking into 51 Kippen Place.” “That’s my neighbors home!” I thought to myself. I hope they’re OK! POLICE: The criminal has fled the home and is hiding somewhere in the community. Please lock all windows and doors and stay inside your homes. We have the block surrounded. I decided to stay at the school until it was safe. I didn’t want to get in the middle of this. A few minutes later MYCA told me that the criminal had been arrested. “Thank goodness!” I thought. Now, we have been able to use MYCA for all sorts of things. Not just for emergencies. If Ms Baker, from down the street, is in need for a strong young buck to move her patio stones, all she has to do is get MYCA to ask the neighbors if someone is interested in making a few dollars. Or if Mr. Casey is looking for some company to go figure skating with, MYCA can find him some friends. With COMMUNITY MESSAGING MYCA makes our lives more safe, convenient, friendlier, and most importantly, MYCA makes any community feel like home.
