Standard 3: Planning and Implementation Component 3.a: Plan and implement appropriate short- and long-term plan objectives that are aligned with local, state, and /or SHAPE America Nation Standards and Grade Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. Artifact: Lesson Plan Completed: Spring 2019
This artifact is a lesson plan for a 5th grade class in my field placement at Smith Elementary where they are entering a volleyball unit and I had to plan an appropriate lesson that included gameplay because that is what the host teachers asked for. So, the lesson starts with teaching skills and progresses into a full game-like scenario. The only parts of the lesson I get to teach are the beginning, so I was able to demonstrate a skill and give some feedback before my time elapsed. This lesson plan is appropriate practice because it starts off with the very basics of having students try the first skill (underhand pass) in a closed setting where they can focus and learn with teacher feedback. Moving forward a small amount of variability is introduced with the addition of partners to the tasks later in the lesson. The next part is to try and apply the skill they have been working on in class so far by having and timed game two times so that they can try to beat their own records and perform better. After the skill has been worked on, I will introduce the new skill we are working on next class so that they can challenge themselves in the upcoming gameplay activities. The first game-like task allows for a bounce off the floor and is smaller sided, so students are getting more repetitions to practice their skills. The second is more mature but, the class may need to keep the bounce rule or just not progress quite yet because it is the first lesson in the volleyball unit.
This helped me as a professional because it gave me the opportunity to plan for a specific class that I had met prior and implement parts of the lesson. This way, I could see how effective this planning ended up being. Another way to look at it is that any problems with instruction or management can now be used for the next time I am planning and changed so that student learning occurs at its best rate.
