RELIEF FUND:

SRC COLLECTED RM35,000

Following the massive quake and tsunami which occurred late last year, the SRC has launched a donation drive to help victims, especially IIUM students whose families were involved in the catastrophe. In regard to this, the SRC would like to thank the International Student’s Office (ISO), Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (SHAS) Mosque, Mahallah Representative Committee (MRC) and all Kulliyyah Based Society (KBS) for their undying support in making this project a success. Apart from that, we would also like to thank IIUM community for helping us to collect around RM35 000 for both Malaysian and Acheh victims. As a start, on the 6th of January 2005, representatives from SRC (Bro. Mohd Helmy Razelan, Vice-President 2 and Bro. Rosyied Ramli, Chairperson of Welfare Secretariat) have met up with Bro. Taufik, a representative of Acheh students, Bro. Taufik. In the meeting which was held at the office of International Institute of Muslim Unity (IIMU), SRC has distributed some of the money collected from the students and staff. The money was to be given to IIUM Acheh students who have been affected with the disaster. The event was witnessed by an officer of IIMU. Hopefully, the money collected from generous students of IIUM will be able to help to ease the pain and suffering of those unfortunate students who have not only lost their houses but also some of their family members. On behalf of SRC, we would like to thank all parties for their contributions and we hope that Allah will reward your generosity.

NEWS RESIDENTS OF FARUQ UNHAPPY Road Problems

We have received complaints from Mahallah Faruq Representative Committee (MRC) about the facilities and logistics problems in the mahallah itself.

The first problem is regarding the holes on the road connecting Mahallah Faruq to Mahallah Siddiq. These holes are a threat to motorists using the roads as the holes are quite deep. There was a report of a car which was stuck in one of the holes and students had to lift the car up to safety. Apart from that, at night, the area is completely pitch-black and it is impossible for motorists to realize the threat in front of them. There were also suggestions that the roads there should be replaced with properly tarred roads. The materials that are used now are not suitable and prove to be quite dangerous for small vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles because the layouts of the bricks are not even. Therefore, we at SRC request for the co-operation from the authority to settle this

STARS: A NEW SYSTEM The Information Technology Division (ITD) of IIUM has built a new system namely the Students’ Activities Record System (STARS), which records all co-curricular activities of IIUM students. This system holds information about students’ co-curricular activities, either within the campus or outside the campus. These activities include the involvement of students in societies, clubs, and programmes under the university. Moreover, this system also includes the achievements of students throughout the

years spent in this university. With this system, one can know about students’ achievements. This is because the system uses co-curricular cumulative average point to show the enrolment of students in such activities. By calculating all the points received for the activities, the average points could be calculated. Each activity has its own points. Higher marks are given to higher achievements. At the end, transcripts of the activities will be given when students graduate.

CONDOLENCES... AL-FATIHAH... SRC would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Bro. Baihaqi Muhammad G0210455, (Ph.D, TESOL/EDUCATION) who, along with his wife and two children passed away due to the tsunami in Acheh. May Allah bless their souls. matter to ensure the safety of the students and also for their comfort. Faruq’s Cafeteria Another problem has been reported by the MRC of Faruq regarding the cafeteria which has been closed since last semester during the month of Ramadhan last year without prior notice. Residents now have to search for food from other mahallahs. Faruq’s MRC has set up a meeting with the college office and the Foods, Facilities and Services Unit (FFSU). Right now, they have assured the MRC that FFSU is now working hard to find a new caterer. The cafeteria, InsyaAllah, will be operating by the 25th of April 2005. However, SRC, on behalf of the MRC and also the residents of Mahallah Farouq urge the authority to re-open the cafeteria faster than the promised date.

SPEAK UP..! Q: What is your opinion regarding the implementation of Students’ Discipline Rules?

“I have no objection regarding the rules of dress code. Hopefully, it can shape and show our professionalism. But, do we have to bring our books and ‘helmet’ to class?” Baharuddin Ismail, BARB , 4 th year

“I think more emphasis should be made towards enforcing traffic rules, such as stopping motorists from using the pedestrian walks and prevent cars going against the one way rule.” Azahan Azad, M.A of Political Science, 2 nd year

“Dress-code during class hour is acceptable. However it is unreasonable to wear ‘full dress-code attire’ to the library at night, covered and proper attire would do..” Maizatul Salamin, HS (Comm), 2 nd year

NEWS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF STUDENTS’ RULES On the 6 th of January 2005, the Discipline Department organized a program called “The Launching of the Students’ Discipline Rules” which was held at the Banquet Hall, Central Complex. Among the guests were our Honourable Rector, Prof. Dr Mohd. Kamal Hassan, Deputy Rector of Student Affairs & Discipline, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar, Director of Students’ Development, Mr. Abu Bakar Sidek, Principals of Mahallat and also special guests from MCIIUM and Kuantan Campus. Any query about the implementation, students can refer to the Discipline Department at Level 4, Administration Building, Central Complex, IIUM. The Discipline Department is now paying close attention to the dress code of students especially around campus. Therefore, students are required to observe their dress code and also their aurah. There are also new rules regarding traffic offences in campus. Students who break these rules could be fined up to RM 50.

TAZKIRAH

GET TO KNOW TASK FORCE TFRM was launched on May 17th 1998. The squad which was formally known as Task Force Squad is the first voluntary rescue team which gives first aid services inside and outside campus. This squad has been recognized by Malaysian Youth and Sports Ministry under Rakan Muda Masyarakat and is one of the most active paramedic teams among all teams advocated by IPT Rakan Muda. With the motto ‘Committed towards Safety’, TFRM primary objectives are to instill self-voluntary spirit and train members in giving first-aid rescue before the actual help comes and offer it as a service and to bond close relationship among the rescuers, the volunteers, and any related organizations that may help in gaining TFRM’s objectives. TFRM offers new recruitment membership every first and third semester of study. In order to be an active TFRM member with a First Aid Responder license, a registered member has to attend a course prepared with the help of trainers from Emergency Department of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Malaysian Society for Traumatology and Emergency Medicine (MASTEM).

TFRM offers paramedic standby service unit when it is needed or requested. For unrequested service mainly for IIUM’s programs, TFRM doesn’t charge anything at all as IIUM has subsidized much in paying the cost for compulsory courses that the members have attended. However, for requested ones, TFRM offers services for RM70 per day or RM40 on half day. The money will go straight to the society account, not to any members themselves. For more information regarding this society, please contact: OPERATION ROOM 03-2056 4104 ILA NORSALIDA ALI AMRAN (President) 013-305 1332 ROSTAMI KAMARUZAMAN (Paramedic Standby) 017-609 9031
