DEADLY DENGUE... The mosquitoes are out on a rampage with dengue fever. There were several dengue cases reported in the newspaper. Transmitted by Aedes aegypty, with symptoms such as fever, rashes, muscle aches, headaches and nausea it can be classified into dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever which is fatal. Subsequently, deterrence is important in curbing this plague from spreading around. As there is no vaccine currently available for dengue fever, methods like fogging done in colleges in IIUM are among the effective ways to adopt besides personal protection of clothing and the use of mosquitoes repellents. Thus, it is a collective responsibility of everyone to control this epidemic from dispersing to our campus ground because prevention is better than cure.

VICTORIOUS ACHIEVEMENTS DURING MASUM 2005 It is indeed a glorious achievement for IIUM during Majlis Sukan Antara Universiti Malaysia 2005 or MASUM 2005 when the IIUM Futsal team emerge as the champion for Futsal after beating Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) 9-1 in the final which was held in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Bangi. One of our players, Faridzul Azlan b. Abd Shani (LLB), was crowned the top scorer with the total of 11 goals (6 goals in the final match). The community of IIUM is certainly proud of their achievement! In addition, IIUM male hockey team has booked their place in the quarter-final of MASUM High Performance game. The matches were held in the hockey turf, IIUM Female Sports Complex. In the group stage, IIUM team managed to beat Multimedia University (MMU)

with the score of 6-0 and UKM (3-1). The last match of the group stage, which will decide the group champion, will be held on the 5th of February 2005, between the IIUM team and the team representing Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) at 5 pm. On the same day, IIUM female hockey team will go against the female UNITEN team at 3 pm. IIUM students are all invited to come and support our teams. Credits also should be given to other IIUM sports contingents for their efforts and sportsmanship shown during MASUM in order to uphold the good name of IIUM during the tournament. We at SRC would like to wish you all the best in your upcoming matches and games. Never give up!

U N F O R G E T TA B L E MINES WONDERLAND On the 16th January 2005, the Student’s Representative Council in collaboration with the International Students’ Office (ISO), had organized a trip to the Mines Wonderland. This trip successfully gathered about 42 students which consisted of both Malaysians and International students. Among the activities conducted during this trip was ice breaking session, musical box and Mummy wrapping games. The main objective of this program was to build up good relationships among students through leisure activities. Besides, the organizer also intended to introduce SRC to IIUM students. Students have mentioned that they thoroughly enjoyed this trip as this was the time for them to release their burden after facing mid-term exams, assignments and so on. Hopefully, this program can be organized again in order to encourage good bonds among students.

PRESIDENTIAL REMARKS Assalamualaikum w.b.t. Praise be to Allah The AlMighty and the Most Merciful. As we are still in the mood of Eidul Adha, maybe it is not too late for me to wish all of you Eid Mubarak My beloved Brothers and Sisters On the 6th of January, we had witnessed the launching of Students’ Discipline Rules 2004 by our Honorable Rector Prof. Dr Kamal Hassan which was attended by mostly student leaders and staff. Since the launching of the new rules,

all students and staff gave positive responses towards the new rules. It is very important that these rules can be understood and followed by all students as they are actually meant to educate rather than to punish or burden students. These rules are also one of the ways to encourage good morality and akhlaq among students which are outlined in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) so that we may all lead better lives and also be better Muslims. These sets of law are also regulated to help the IIUM community build a better Islamic environment or ‘Biah-solehah’ in our campus so that the motto ‘Garden of Knowledge and Virtue’ can be proven and promoted. Based on that, we as IIUM students should assist the university in achieving its mis-

sion and vision to uphold and preserve the good name of our university. Obviously, what have been done by the university is for our own benefit in the future. Insya Allah one day, we will be able to contribute to the development of Islam and its ummah and also to our beloved native soil. Therefore, I would like to urge myself and all fellow students to comply with the rules of our campus. Insya Allah… Mohd Helmy Razelan Vice President 2

NEWS SUDDEN WATER INTERR UPTION INTERRUPTION RESIDENTS OF MARYAM UPSET On Monday, the 24th of January 2005, the SRC was notified by residents of Mahallah Maryam regarding a sudden interruption of water supply at the mentioned mahallah. The water supply was cut-off without prior notice, beginning from 8 pm and was restored at 10 am the next day. This unexpected interruption caused much distress among students as many of their daily activities were interrupted. They were even more upset as the Mahallah administration failed to inform them earlier regarding the interruption of water supply.

We, at SRC have enquired the Mahallah personnel regarding this matter. According to the representative from the office of Mahallah Maryam, the interruption is caused by the maintenance system of the main pipe at Maryam. The Mahallah administration profusely apologised for all inconveniences caused and will do their best in order to avoid such problems from occurring again.

This team offered a lot of help while in Acheh. Among their contributions was the setup a mass-kitchen where preparations of foods for the lucky survivors could be done. They also distributed foods and other goods for the victims. They paid visits to camps or ‘Posko’ which place the victims of the disaster

TSUNAMI RELIEF TEAM (TrT) Tsunami Relief Team or TrT was formed in order to answer calls of help from the victims of the recent tsunami disaster which occurred last December. The main function of TrT is to give support to the people in Acheh. There were five students involved in this team, all from various courses. Two of them represented the Task Force Squad, one from Wataniah, another from Welfare Brigade. Accompanying them was an IIUM officer. They were all in Acheh for a week, beginning from the 17th of January until the 23rd of January 2005.

EDITORIAL BOARD

SPEAK UP..! What is your opinion, as a staff of IIUM, regarding the implementation of the new rules recently? “Enforcement of the rules is very important and it should be made continuously. By rules, we are able to control the students’ disciplinary behaviour. The rules can only be successful if all Madam Norbani Ismail (Lecturer) the staff play their parts in implementing them. in order to show their concern towards these victims. We at SRC are very proud of them for their willingness to support this team and also the victims of this unfortunate disaster. This is very important in helping the victims regain their strength to survive and go back to their normal life.

“I have no objection regarding the enforcement of the new rules in IIUM. It will create good attitudes among the students and also give an advantage to them to present their cases in front of the authority when fined.”

NOTICE FROM A&R To all students, please bear in mind that problems pertaining to your academic affairs should be directed to your respective deputy deans of student affairs. The Admissions and Records (A&R) Department will carry out only administrative measures and will therefore pay no attention to students’ academic issues (i.e. examinations, course registration, withdrawal, etc).

Students are also reminded to be alert of any notices issued by the A&R so as to ensure that no notification is being left overlooked. It is again reminded that issues concerning students’ academic problems should be referred to deputy deans of students affairs at each kulliyyah. Hasminie Mohammad IIUM Security Guard

“The new rules can only be successful if everyone co-operates to implement them especially students. Students should be aware of the regulations that have been stated by the university and I have no objection about the enforcement of the rules”.

GET TO KNOW

IIUM Theatre Club The IIUM Theatre Club is one of the Cultural Based Societies in IIUM. Representing culture, it is a part of their responsibility and aim to raise the rank of the university’s theatre arts to the mass public and also to be able to produce first-rate theatrical performances. From an interview with Theatre Club’s current President, Bro. Shahrul Annuar Othman, it is obviously a tale to say that the Theatre Club is strictly for BENL students. It is a fact that majority of the club members are from the course, but it being a BENL society is a wrong assumption. The reason why students of other courses are not interested to join this society is because they feel inferior when compared to the BENL students in acting or performing arts skills as the BENL students have already been exposed to such skills in their course of study. However, the President of the Theatre Club insisted that such hypothesis is untrue.

“Everybody can act,” said Bro. Shahrul Annuar. “They just need to get use to the nature of theatre, such as using their voices in different ways.” In order to erase the false theory about Theatre Club, members of the main board intend to ask for representatives from each kulliyyah to join the club. In fact, they are waiting for Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design’s production team, ‘Soul’, to join them after their success during the English Theatre Week which was organized last semester. This is to ensure that the club will be able to share and inform these talented actors and actresses any related information and updates about theatre, both in and outside the campus so that they can work hand in hand to enhance the quality of performing arts of IIUM. Now, Theatre Club has three production teams and two main bureaus which are the Welfare and Information Bureaus. Still,

ATTENTION ACTIVATE YOUR EXTRA NEWS CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES! Believe it or not, during the 2003/2004 session in IIUM there were around 81 clubs and societies which were registered officially under the Students’ Development Division (S-DEV). However, sadly this session, not more than 50 societies and clubs managed to officially register themselves with S-DEV. We need to balance our lives as students with both studies and beneficial extra co-curricular activities as non-credited activities are very important for our future. IIUM students have the advantage of having the activities recorded in the STARS (Students’ Activities Record System) and it may be reprinted in the form of transcript. This is a new

form used to record all our activities in clubs and societies. One day in the future, while looking for employment after we graduate, we can simply show our future employers the book as a valid proof of our contributions and involvement in clubs and societies of IIUM. SRC would like to encourage students who are not involved or not active in extra co-curricular activities to start joining or organizing any events or activities for your own benefits. Presidents of all clubs and societies in IIUM are also reminded that any club which is not active will be suspended from organising programmes and will later on be dissolved.

REMINDERS 1. To all JPA-sponsored students with initial matric numbers 032, 033, 041 and 042, please submit your Muamalat/Islam Bank account number to Finance Division. Please do so as soon as possible to avoid any further difficulties with your loans. 2. Students of IIUM are reminded to abide by the new Students’ Discipline Rules 2004 set by the university recently. Among these rules are rules regarding proper attire in

campus, traffic rules, rules regarding the use of liquor and drugs, rules during examinations and rules regarding mahallah cleanliness and vandalism. Any student who is found not following these regulations can be fined up to RM 50. For more information regarding these rules, students are advised to contact the SRC office.

every member is expected to be versatile in doing jobs from being only a crew to a director. The club is working hard to improve their skills both in management and production skills. They plan to present at least a play every week starting next semester which will run for at least two days, taking example from the works of the professional teams. For those interested in joining the club, please register at Theatre Club’s membership drive counter which is situated near the library starting this week. Contact Bro. Shahrul Annuar through this number: 012-9129261.
