portsman’s Gear readers will notice a few changes with this issue, nothing earth-shattering, but nonetheless different. Our publication is no longer affiliated with Cornett Publishing, but rather it is now owned and operated by Stovall Media, Inc. Many of you personally know and have relationships with owner, Eric Stovall, who now is the President and CEO, managing this publication’s day-to-day operations. We are so excited about this year and the opportunities to serve our readers with high-quality articles, top-of-the-line product announcements, and brand new vehicle reviews. Additionally, our web site is growing and gaining in popularity. We invite you to visit it regularly at www.SPORTSMANSGEARMAG.com. This issue, rightly dubbed the “Jeep” issue, is full of products and information for the Jeep enthusiast. In addition, you’ll get a “keeper” installation article describing the intimate details of installing a RockJock Rearend in a Jeep JK. As most of you know the annual Moab Jeep Easter Event is coming up, and with that in mind, our destination piece takes you to Moab, Utah for a sneak peek at this unique area. Hopefully, it will inspire you to get out and visit some of this nation’s great attractions. Be sure and check out the latest and greatest cars, trucks, and SUVs that are either already on showroom floors near you, or soonto-be at dealerships across the country. We even have some hybrid models for your review. This is such a wonderful time of year: spring turkey hunting season is opening, the fish are biting, and the Blue Bonnets are blooming across Texas. Whatever your pleasure, enjoy life! Until next time, Becky J. Beall

merica is, and will always be, the land of dreams and opportunity. The differences in people lie within their desires to act on those dreams and embrace their inner entrepreneurial spirit. Keith Carpenter is one of those dreamers who coupled desire and opportunity with a great idea – hence, the BedSlide was born. Carpenter began his business venture in 1999 in a backyard shop with two friends he lured into the business. His quest was this: to find an easy way to access cargo from the back of his restored 1972 Chevrolet pick-up without having to crawl in after it. The result: the BedSlide – a pick-up bed cargo access platform. Things took off quickly with the three partners each accepting a major responsibility. Founder, Carpenter, led the vision as President of IFW BedSlide, Steve Robinson served as production manager, and Dan Marshall handled marketing. When the dust settled, BedSlide had found a niche in the aftermarket industry and catapulted to a new level of success.

10

Carpenter and his partners had found a virtually untapped market and pickup owners were thrilled! Today, many companies offer copy-cat versions of this cargo access platform, but the BedSlide’s unique mounting patents clearly raise them to the top of the heap – industry leaders, if you will. So, what is it that distinguishes the BedSlide from the other brands? What makes the BedSlide so appealing to pickup and utility van owners? The following features are found ONLY on the BedSlide: •The BedSlide mounts in most vehicles in less than 15 minutes – BedSlide’s exclusive mounting patent. •The BedSlide is COMPLETELY removable in about two minutes, leaving the pick-up’s flexibility an option. •Fully extended, the BedSlide will hold up to 1000 lbs on the Avalance/ Cadillac EXT and up to 1800 lbs on all other models. •Build by hand with heavy gauge steel, BedSlide touts the highest quality and most durable components available.

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

•Available in five model options, the BedSlide offers whatever grade best suits the owners needs: S t a n d a r d , We a t h e r D e c k , o r Contractor Grade. •All BedSlides come with a five-year, no nonsense warranty. The BedSlide is a product that simply adds ease and convenience to your life. It’s easy to operate – simply twist the locking handle and glide your cargo to you. This process is designed to make cargo easily accessible, but an added benefit is that cargo is also safer to lift therefore it results in less injuries from handling/lifting cargo. Over the years, Carpenter bought out his early partners, and David McInturf is now onboard as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. The BedSlide is available through a network of national and regional distributors in the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia with more countries coming soon. The distribution amounts to some 5000 dealers throughout these countries. For more information, please visit www.bedslide.com. SG

Company Profile

The Birth of Supertanks, LLC Like customers at his auto dealerships, Woody started to grow increasingly frustrated by this lack of fuel capacity and limited range. For those towing trailers or traveling long distances, this meant frequent stops and buying fuel from the closest and oft-times high-dollar stations. In 2003, when Woody couldn’t find a suitable after-market tank, he decided to make one himself, and Supertanks was born. Searching for the Ideal Fuel Tank From the start, Woody wanted a lightweight tank that would fit perfectly and, at the least, double the vehicle’s fuel range – without taking up valuable cargo space in the bed or interfering with hitches or accessories, and without detracting from the vehicle’s beauty. The first TITAN™ Fuel Tanks were made of standard Linear Polyethylene similar to the original equipment tanks they would replace. Despite the fact that these early tanks were difficult to install and required a high degree of expertise as well as vehicle modifications (cutting and welding), customers came from far and wide to buy them. The TITAN Tank – Double Fuel Capacity and Superior Impact Resistance Two years later, when a chemical engineer suggested High-Density Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLHDPE), Woody had his solution. A space-age material that bonds on the molecular level, XLHDPE is chemical resistant and extremely durable. It made the TITAN Tank nearly indestructible, doubled fuel capacity, and extended vehicle range. It also made TITAN's 5year limited warranty possible. New Gen 5 Tanks In 2007, TITAN introduced its Gen 5 Tanks with design modifications greatly easing installation and improving longterm performance. The lightweight tank (about 45 lbs. without hardware) can be easily maneuvered so a “driveway mechanic” can install it in 2-4 hours, depending on expertise. Larger Capacity Tanks In 2008, TITAN expanded to a state-ofthe-art facility, investing extensively in precision tooling and taking advantage of another opportunity to improve product design. This led to TITAN’s latest “Super

Series” line, which includes larger capacity tanks and further design innovations. Q: How much more range will I get with a TITAN™ Fuel Tank? A: A TITAN Fuel Tank will just about double the range of most popular crew cab applications. For example, the stock tank on a GM Crew Cab Short Bed truck is 26 gallons; the TITAN replacement tank is 52 gallons. A Ford Crew Cab Long Bed comes with a 34 gallon tank; the replacement TITAN Fuel Tank holds 67 gallons. For extended cab and other applications, you can expect at least a 65% to 90% increase in capacity and corresponding range. Q: Will my fuel gauge be accurate? A: Yes. Your analog fuel gauge will work the same with the TITAN Fuel Tank as it did with your original stock equipment tank. Q: Will my Driver Information Center (DIC) computer work the same? A: No. The DIC computer will not be accurate. Q: Is there a way to fix the DIC computer? A: Some independent companies are coming out with ways to reprogram the computer and match it to the larger tank. EFI Live (www.efilive.com) can reprogram most GM products. Q: Can I install a TITAN Fuel Tank on my gasoline-powered truck? A: No. TITAN Fuel Tanks are only for diesel-fueled vehicles. Q: How much does the tank weigh? A: The short-bed tank models weigh an average of 45 pounds (without the bracket hardware). This means more capacity with less weight and easier installation. Q: How difficult is installation? A: We’ve made every effort to make installation as simple as possible. The TITAN Fuel Tank fits in place of your original tank. We include all the necessary parts and detailed instructions. Generally speaking, installation entails removing the stock tank, moving the sending unit to the new TITAN Tank, reattaching the fuel lines, and bolting in the new tank. Your TITAN dealer can help you with installation. Q: How long does installation take? A: Between 2-4 hours depending on your expertise. We’ve seen TITAN Fuel Tanks installed in 45 minutes. Q: Is the TITAN Fuel Tank as durable as the original stock equipment tank? W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

A: More durable and better warrantied. Most stock (or original equipment) tanks are relatively thin and made of materials like Linear Polyethylene. TITAN Fuel Tanks are made of High-Density CrossLinked Polyethylene (XLHDPE), which is bonded molecularly. Also, the nominal thickness of all TITAN Tanks is ¼ of an inch. TITAN Fuel Tanks are so tough that they are backed by a 5-year, or 50,000miles, limited warranty. Q: Does the TITAN Fuel Tank hang down lower than the stock tank? A: For most applications the TITAN hangs about 1 to 2½ inches lower than the stock tank. Usually the difference is negligible. Q: Do I need the TITAN™ Shield? A: The TITAN Shield, made of XLHDPE, is incredibly tough. It fits over the bottom of the tank, providing the underside with a rock shield. We recommend it for owners who go off-road. Q: How quickly could you ship a TITAN Fuel Tank to me? A: If you don’t have a local TITAN dealer – and there are hundreds of dealers across the country – a tank could be shipped directly to you, FedEx Ground or Freight. If you don’t have a local dealer, to order a TITAN Fuel Tank call (800) 728-4982. Q: What is the returned goods policy? A: No returned merchandise will be accepted without prior written consent of the management of TITAN Fuel Tanks. Any merchandise which may be returned as a result of a warranty issue shall not be subject to this policy but shall be handled as per TITAN’s published warranty policy. Any merchandise that is not returned under the provisions of the warranty policy shall be subject to the following: •Restocking charge, equal to 20% of the purchase price. •Customer returning merchandise will be responsible for pre-paid freight to a location specified by TITAN. •Any item which has been installed or had fuel introduced into it cannot be returned. •Merchandise condition must be pristine. Merchandise cost will not be cred-ited back to customer until merchandise is returned to and inspected by TITAN Fuel Tanks. If the condition of the merchandise is not sufficient, no credit will be granted. SG

2009 Subaru Impreza

WRX

Class: Sedan Base: $27,495 Fuel Economy: 19/22

S

ubaru is revving up performance and handling in its iconic All-Wheel Drive Impreza WRX model for 2009. Performance is boosted to a new level in the 2009 WRX thanks to a 265 horsepower turbocharged intercooled Boxer engine, retuned suspension and wider, lower-profile summer performance tires. WRX enthusiasts will quickly identify the 2009 models by the STI-type grille and standard Aero Package. The 2009 Impreza WRX is available with a 5speed manual transmission only. The goal of the 2009 WRX team was termed “Kyo-Ka” (translated from Japanese as “strengthening”). To achieve this goal, Subaru engineers thoroughly revamped the performance character of the WRX for 2009. A larger turbocharger increases boost to 13.3 psi from 11.4 psi in the 2008 model, and a new larger-diameter exhaust uses a low-density catalyst for reduced backpressure. As a result, the 2009 WRX engine produces 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm – significant increases from the 224 horsepower and 226 lb.ft. in the 2008 version. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city / 25 mpg highway, compared to 19/24 for the 2008 WRX model. The Impreza WRX debuted an all-new platform for the 2008 model year, featuring a longer 103.1-inch wheelbase and an all-new double-wishbone rear suspension system. Revised suspension tuning for 2009 further bolsters WRX’s street performance credentials. The standard 17 x 7-inch aluminum alloy wheels now wear 225/45R17 summer performance tires, compared with 205/50R17 all-season tires 12

used on the 2008 WRX. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), a stability and traction control system, is standard on all Impreza models for 2009. Suspension Re-Tuned for Sharper Handling Subaru significantly re-tuned the suspension on the 2009 WRX, resulting in sharper turn-in and more responsive handling overall. Front upper strut mounts are adopted from the STI. The front spring rate is 43-percent stiffer, and the rear spring rate is 42-percent stiffer. Diameter of the stabilizer bars is also increased, from 20 mm to 21 mm in front and from 15 mm to 16 mm in the rear. Suspension damping was also re-tuned. Because the wider tires used on the 2009, a new damper valve was also added to the steering gearbox to ensure a smooth and high quality steering feeling. Placing the engine slightly lower in the chassis than in the previous-generation Impreza models helped lower the center of gravity in the new Impreza platform, enhancing steering response. With the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (DC3), Subaru optimized all elements of the Impreza’s chassis to deliver a better balance of handling response, ride quality, quietness and overall traction performance than offered by competitive vehicles. New WRX Aero Body Styling On both 2009 WRX Sedan and 5-Door models, a new STI-type grille carries the WRX badge. Both models get a sharpened new look from the standard Aero Package, which was formerly part of the optional WRX Premium Package. Both W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

body styles also feature front and rear under-bumper spoilers and aerodynamic side ground effects. The sedan has a lowprofile rear trunk spoiler, while the 5Door adopts the Impreza WRX STI rear spoiler and a rear diffuser. The rear garnish panel between the light clusters is body color on the 5-Door and chrome on the sedan. Other distinctions between the two models continue as before, including clear rear tail lamp lenses for the 5-Door and red lenses on the sedan. The 4-Door features dual tailpipe outlets, while the 5Door uses a single, larger outlet (stainless steel on Premium Package). Rally-Inspired Interior The WRX interior introduced new comfort and spaciousness for 2008, and for 2009 it gains new WRX-exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery accented by red stitching. The standard tilt and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel is accented by red stitching and standard aluminum-alloy pedal covers now include the driver’s footrest. Performance-design front seats integrate the backrest and head restraint into a single structure. The sporty instrument panel features electroluminescent gauges with indicator needles that sweep the gauge faces upon engine startup. The optional WRX Premium Package gains a power moonroof; other contents carry over, including the 10-speaker audio upgrade with auxiliary input jack, projector-beam fog lights, dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. The compact layout of the doublewishbone configuration helps to minimize

Cars intrusion into the cargo area, providing a wider and deeper luggage compartment. On the 5-Door WRX, the wide and flat load floor can accommodate two Toursize golf bags with the rear seat backs in the upright position. In the WRX sedan, which is 4.5-inches longer than the previous-generation Impreza sedan and 6.5inches longer than the new 5-Door models, the extra space provides for a larger, deeper trunk that can accommodate three Tour-size golf bags. In all WRX models, a 60/40-split folding rear seat further boosts cargo capacity and convenience.

ty. Occupants enjoy powerful sound from 10 upgraded speakers (six in the front doors, four in the rear doors) and SRS® Circle Surround Sound. Also with this package, the steering wheel adds audio system switches. An auxiliary audio input jack enables connection of an iPod or MP3 player. The optional Satellite Radio and Navigation package for the WRX integrates the Audyssey MultEQ audio

enhancement. Used in high-end home theater systems, Audyssey MultEQ creates the optimal sound experience for passengers in each seat position by tuning equalization that corrects for time and frequency response. The navigation system itself presents major functions through an intuitive, easy-to-use touch screen interface. This option also includes Bluetooth® hands-free wireless capability (requires accessory kit). SG

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which forms the common core technology on all Subaru models, gives the Impreza WRX a significant handling performance advantage over front-wheel drive competitors. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a complete system comprised of the Boxer engine and the full-time power distribution system (which varies by model and transmission). The aluminum Boxer engine and simple, symmetrical drivetrain layout help to lower the car’s center of gravity, which in turn contributes to its handling characteristics. The 2009 Impreza WRX employs a viscous coupling locking center differential that distributes torque 50:50 front:rear. Should slippage occur, this system transfers more power to the wheels with the best traction. Advanced Yet Easy-To-Use Technology The available navigation and information center in Impreza WRX is the focal point of the center console. The navigation screen is located at the top of the dashboard for improved visibility and ease of use. With the navigation system, the center console provides an input for MP3 players as well as RCA-type video jacks that can accommodate portable gaming devices. These can be displayed on the navigation screen when the vehicle is parked. Impreza models come pre-wired for XM® or SIRIUS® Satellite Radio. Both the standard and optional Impreza audio systems feature the Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) that can display a variety of information, including a song’s title and artist. The standard WRX audio system features an AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and four speakers. The WRX Premium Package adds an AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD changer featuring MP3/WMA file capabili

2009 Cadillac CT S-V

C

ombining the serious performance of an elite sports car with the poise of a luxury sedan, the 2009 CTS-V is Cadillac’s ultimate expression of performance and luxury. Part of Cadillac’s acclaimed V-Series of high-performance models, the CTSV delivers 556 horsepower (415 kW) at 6,100 rpm – making it the most powerful production Cadillac ever and one of the world’s fastest and most capable sedans. More than just power, CTS-V also includes a comprehensive suite of technical and design enhancements. These include Magnetic Ride Control, supercapable Brembo brakes and the addition of a new automatic transmission with paddle-shift control. “The CTS-V represents the full extension of our design, technology and performance capabilities,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. “The V-Series takes the award-winning CTS sport sedan and elevates it to a position within the club of the world’s most exclusive and capable cars.” The V’s development team tirelessly fine-tuned the car on some of the world’s most demanding and legendary environments. Germany’s famed Nürburgring, and roads and tracks throughout the United States and Europe, were the proving grounds. The 2009 CTS-V extends Cadillac’s acclaimed design language, both inside and out. Several key technical and design elements combine to transform the already highly capable CTS into the new V-Series. New 6.2L Supercharged V-8 Engine The all-new LSA 6.2L supercharged V8 engine is, perhaps, the most dramatic example of the V’s world-class comportment. Rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW) and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm), the CTS-V’s new LSA engine is the most powerful ever offered in Cadillac’s nearly 106year history. The LSA engine is based on GM’s legendary small-block V-8 architecture and features an intercooled supercharger sys14

Series

tem, premium aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and numerous details designed to ensure it makes its power as quietly and smoothly as possible. The supercharger, for example, has a new, four-lobe rotor design that enhances quietness while also optimizing the performance parameters of the engine. Complementing the LSA’s tremendous output is a combination of components and design elements designed to ensure a quiet, refined driving experience. Examples include: •Balanced, lightweight reciprocating assembly •Hypereutectic pistons •Lower-lift, low-overlap camshaft •Center-feed fuel system •Acoustic engine cover •Piston oil spray cooling Transmissions A pair of six-speed transmissions is offered with the LSA: a new, Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch; and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with paddle-shift control – the first automatic offered in the CTS-V. Each transmission is designed to channel the engine’s tremendous power while simultaneously delivering exceptional refinement and smoothness. The new TR6060 transmission is based on the proven T56 six-speed used in the previous CTS-V, but upgraded to handle the LSA engine’s substantial increase in torque, as well as improve shift quality, via a dual-disc clutch system. The twindisc clutch delivers exceptional clamping power and excellent shift effort, achieved with the use of a pair of smaller-diameter clutch discs that have less inertia than a single, larger-diameter disc. Like the previous CTS-V, a dual-mass flywheel is used, which allows for smooth, rattle-free performance. GM’s Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission features steering-wheel- and console shifter-activated tap up/tap down gear control, as well as driver-selectable modes that deliver different performance characteristics (i.e. shift points, shift firmness 0, for different driving conditions. Class: Mid-Size Cars Base: $57,920 Fuel Economy: 12/18 Algorithm Shifting is part of the 6L90’s controller programming and provides a performance-oriented shift pattern during sustained high-performance driving, such as at a racetrack. Magnetic Ride Control The 2009 Cadillac CTS-V features the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology, Magnetic Ride Control (MRC). It uses shocks controlled by advanced magneto-rheological technology, rather than mechanical valves, greatly accelerating response time and precision. Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally “read the road” every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions. This is of particular benefit for a high-performance sedan, helping to keep the car very composed during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamic maneuvers. The Magnetic Ride shocks also enable a much broader range of damping control to optimize the ride and handling for all driving conditions. In the CTS-V, Cadillac provides an extra measure of control, as Magnetic Ride has two selectable modes (Tour and Sport), enabling the driver to tailor the suspension for grand touring or more spirited performance driving. Elite Levels of Performance The combination of advanced technology and extensive testing behind the CTSV results in elite levels of performance, yet also remarkable poise on the road. The CTS-V accelerates from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds – performance that is common to only a select few “supercars,” placing CTS-V in select company as one of the world’s highest-performing sedans. Unlike most “supercars,” though, CTSV provides a luxury driving experience across a range of conditions. Whether grand touring over winding roads, or even in daily driving conditions, CTS-V is poised. The car retains the inherent characteristics of the CTS itself, including well-tuned quietness and road manners. SG

2009 Silverado Hybrid Delivers 25-percent Improved Fuel Economy and Delivers Chevy’s Rugged Capability 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD Crew Cab 1HY Class: Standard Pickup Trucks Base: $41,170 Fuel Economy: 20/20

T

he 2009 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid is a powerful full-size pickup that achieves 40-percent greater city fuel economy and a 25-percent improvement in overall fuel economy while delivering the capability expected of a full-size truck – including a 6,100-pound (2,767 kg) towing capacity. Partnering General Motors’ patented two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0L gas V-8, the Silverado Hybrid delivers highly efficient performance, including all-electric driving up to 30 mph (48 km/h). That allows fuel savings to be realized even when the truck is fully loaded or towing a trailer. EPA-estimated fuel economy for 2WD models is 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway; 4WD models are estimated at 20 mpg in both city and highway driving. That mileage, combined with the Silverado Hybrid’s 26-gallon (98 L) fuel tank, delivers a cruising range of more than 500 miles with 2WD models and more than 470 miles with 4WD models. “The Silverado Hybrid’s combination of efficiency and capability make it a nocompromises truck for customers who work and play hard, but want greater fuel economy,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. The Silverado Hybrid goes on sale in the first quarter of 2009. It is offered in the crew cab body style on both 2WD and 4WD models. Each model is equipped with several standard, popular features, 16

including StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. Silverado Hybrid also offers dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags, and it is the only full-size truck with five-star sideimpact ratings in federal crash tests. Hybrid Details The Silverado Hybrid’s fuel-saving performance is derived from GM’s advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. GM’s hybrid technology system not only enables the Silverado to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows the Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods. As part of the vehicle’s emission control system, the ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles. With GM’s two-mode hybrid system, the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed. The two-mode hybrid system provides W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package. In fact, its electric motor is less than half the size of those in single-mode hybrid systems. This technology was developed and is still used in fleets of hybrid transit buses in more than 70 North American and European cities. Scaled-down for use in passenger vehicles, the two-mode system delivers fuel savings where it is needed most – in large vehicles with high levels of capability. The two-mode system was first introduced on the 2008 Tahoe Hybrid. It is a core part of GM’s energy diversity efforts, which are centered on reducing dependence on petroleum, improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and minimizing the automobile’s impact on the environment. With the fuel savings of the hybrid system and Silverado’s 26-gallon (98-liter) fuel tank, the Silverado Hybrid has a cruising range of more than 500 miles (800 km). Quiet and Smooth Integration of the hybrid system on the Silverado is seamless – the battery pack is located beneath the rear seat – and delivers a quiet driving experience. Contributors to this include: •New exhaust system and resonator tuned for the 6.0L engine’s Active Fuel Management operation. •Additional engine intake induction tuning for reduced interior noise and pleasing sound quality.

Trucks •Low-rolling resistance, “quiet-tuned” P265/65R18 tires for reduced road noise. •Electrically driven 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the standard, tri-zone HVAC system to cool the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off. •Electrically driven 42-volt variableassist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems. •Energy Storage System (ESS) cooling system internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants. Along with quietness, the Silverado Hybrid also delivers exceptional driving smoothness, thanks to specifically tuned shocks and a new hydraulic body mount. Located on the passenger side of the chassis, the hydraulic mount provides a dramatic improvement in highway driving smoothness, particularly on rough or choppy road surfaces.

ing smoothness and quality when towing. Towing capacity is 6,100 pounds (2,767 kg) with 2WD models and 5900 pounds (2,676 kg) with 4WD models. Electric drive is enabled up to approximately 30 mph (48 km/h), even when towing, allowing fuel savings when the truck is towing a trailer. The EVT incorporates grade braking and tap up/tap down shift control. It also benefits towing on curves or lower-speed back roads, as exceptionally smooth gear transitions eliminate the “shift shock” torque disruption that can occur during abrupt shifts, such as when slowing or braking.

In addition to the eight-year/100,000mile warranty on the Silverado Hybrid’s Energy Storage System, GM's FiveYear/100,000 Mile Powertrain Limited Warranty continues to make GM a better choice for customers. GM's coverage focuses on the complete ownership experience and includes other provisions that competitors do not offer, including transferability to the next owner, more complete coverage of parts, and coverage for new and certified used vehicles. In addition, GM offers complementary programs such as courtesy transportation and roadside assistance. SG

2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is the First Hybrid In A Large Luxury SUV

T

he Cadillac Escalade Hybrid is the world’s first fuel-saving hybrid applied to a large luxury SUV, delivering a 50-percent fuel economy improvement in city driving. It is powered by GM’s innovative, fuel-saving two-mode hybrid system and offers the same dramatic design, luxury and full-size capability that have made the Escalade an icon. Escalade Hybrid is available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. It delivers up to 5,800 pounds (2,631 kg) of usable towing capacity on 2WD models and 5,600 pounds (2,540 kg) on 4WD models. Nearly all of Escalade’s standard comfort and convenience features are included as standard equipment on the hybrid model, including an eight-inch, touch-screen navigation system that displays performance readouts of the two-mode hybrid system on the screen. Escalade Hybrid extends Cadillac’s leadership in the large luxury SUV category, particularly in the area of technology.

alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8 engine to operate in its more economical four-cylinder mode for longer periods. The key to Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system is that the electric power used to propel the vehicle is generated by the hybrid system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300volt battery. This stored energy is used to move the vehicle and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed. The two-mode hybrid system provides seamless, dependable power on demand in an efficient package. In fact, its electric motor is less than half the size of those in single-mode hybrid systems. This technology was developed and is still used 2009 Cadillac Escalade 2WD Hybrid Class: All SUVs Base: $70,735 Fuel Economy: 20/21

Patented Two-Mode Hybrid Technology The Escalade’s two-mode hybrid system allows it to return exceptional fuel economy in both city and highway while delivering the capabilities of a true luxury SUV. In city driving, this advanced hybrid power system enables Escalade to launch and drive low speeds on electricity alone. As additional power is demanded, the system blends output from the battery and gas engine smoothly. GM’s patented two-mode hybrid system consists of an advanced electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). These systems work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 Gen IV gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late-intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. AFM enables the V-8 engine to seamlessly shut off half of its cylinders when less power is needed, such as during highway cruising. This new hybrid system not only enables the Escalade Hybrid to drive low speeds on electricity 20

in fleets of hybrid transit buses on the streets today in dozens of major North American cities. Scaled-down for use in full-size SUVs, the two-mode system delivers fuel savings where it is needed most – in large vehicles with high levels of capability. It is a core part of GM’s energy diversity efforts, which are centered on reducing dependence on petroleum, improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and minimizing the automobile’s impact on the environment. Energy Storage System (ESS) Providing power to the hybrid’s electrically variable transmission’s (EVT) two electric motors is a 300-volt nickelmetal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). This battery pack is located under

SUVs the second-row seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second- or third-row ingress/egress. The primary function of the ESS is to provide power (300 volts) to the EVT and to store captured energy produced during regenerative braking. In addition to supplying power to the EVT, the ESS also provides power to the air conditioning compressor and the Accessory Power Module (APM), which converts the highvoltage supply to 42 volts for the electric power steering system, and 12 volts for the vehicle battery and other 12-volt electrical accessories. Battery pack durability and reliability are maintained via optimized charge and discharge cycles, as well as a dedicated cooling system that draws air from the passenger compartment. As part of the vehicle’s emission control system, the ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles. Regenerative Braking The Escalade Hybrid features fully blended regenerative braking to capture energy that would otherwise be lost during vehicle deceleration. By using one or both of the EVT’s traction motors as a generator, braking energy is converted to electrical energy and stored in the ESS for future use to propel the vehicle. The regenerative brakes are used along with the standard hydraulic brakes to slow the vehicle and/or bring it to a stop. Depending on the amount of braking force required, the hydraulic brakes may not even be used, such as during mild deceleration when slowing to allow space for merging traffic near a highway onramp. Regenerative braking has the additional benefit of extending the life of the friction materials used in the hydraulic braking system, as well as improving braking performance in the form of shorter stopping distances.

the passenger compartment even when the gasoline engine is shut off. It includes the standard tri-zone climate system •An electrically driven, 42-volt variable-assist power steering reduces vibration and provides up to a 0.5-mpg fuel economy improvement by reducing parasitic losses common in belt-driven hydraulic systems •The Energy Storage System cooling system’s internal fan is tuned to be quiet at low vehicle speeds, when the fan could more easily be heard by the occupants

Cadillac’s Smooth and Quiet Power Acoustic details specific to the Hybrid model ensure it delivers the superior luxury that has been an Escalade hallmark since its inception. The details include: •A new exhaust system and resonator specially tuned for the 6.0L LIVC engine’s Active Fuel Management operation. It ensures comfortable interior acoustics and a pleasant exhaust note during both V-4 and V-8 operation •An electrically driven, 300-volt air conditioning compressor reduces vibration and allows the HVAC system to cool

6.0L V-8 Engine The Escalade Hybrid’s 6.0L V-8 engine is unique. It features Active Fuel Management and late intake valve closing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process) for reduced pumping losses and better overall fuel economy. It uses flat-top pistons, cylinder heads borrowed from GM’s 5.3L high-output V-8 and a 10.8:1 compression ratio, producing 332 horsepower (248 kW) at 5,100 rpm and 367 lb.-ft. of torque (498 Nm) at 4,100 rpm. It runs on regular unleaded fuel. A unique 3.42 rear axle ratio is used with this powertrain combination to help deliver the outstanding acceleration that is a hallmark of the Escalade’s performance. A key contributor to the Escalade Hybrid’s fuel economy is the gasoline engine’s Auto Stop mode. Once the vehicle reaches 0 mph, the gasoline engine is automatically shut down. By leaving the engine off and allowing the vehicle to move only under electric power, such as during heavy stop-and-go traffic, fuel consumption and emissions are greatly reduced.

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

However, when extra power is required, such as for wide-open-throttle acceleration from a standing stop, the Vortec 6.0L V-8 is seamlessly restarted so it can deliver the necessary power and torque. In this case, the engine is restarted effortlessly from the Auto Stop mode using the EVT’s powerful internal electric motors; there is no traditional starter motor. Escalade Aesthetic The Escalade Hybrid retains the qualities that have made it the leading large luxury SUV and a standard-bearer of Cadillac’s overall product renaissance. It is instantly identifiable as a Cadillac and incorporates styling cues from the landmark Sixteen concept vehicle, including a detailed signature grille, front fender vent ports and layers of chrome accents. The Escalade’s warm and inviting interior features a premium layout. It is available in two colors, Ebony and Cashmere. Standard features include a distinctive instrument panel; gauges with white needles and blue light inlays with continuously lit, white-LED backlighting; Nuance leather-covered seats; leather-covered door trim and center console; and a power-assisted rear liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button. 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid Offers 50-Percent Greater City Fuel Economy

T

he Chevy Tahoe Hybrid delivers a dramatic improvement in fuel economy over nonhybrid models – a 50-percent improved mileage in city driving – with all of the comfort and capability customers expect in a full-size SUV. Indeed, the Tahoe Hybrid is mostly unchanged from the gasoline-only models in the key capability areas. There is no difference in passenger seating capacity, and towing and payload are highly competitive with other non-hybrid SUVs in the segment. There are some key subtle enhancements, however, in specific areas that contribute to the fuel economy improvements associated with the Tahoe Hybrid. T h e Ta h o e H y b r i d ’s v a s t l y improved fuel economy over gasoline-only siblings is due largely to a s tate-of-the-art hybrid system using GM’s all-new Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT). Two-wheel-drive

22

Tahoe Hybrid models, for example, deliver 21 mpg in the city, a 50-percent improvement over their 5.3L non-hybrid siblings and comparable to the city fuel economy of much-smaller cars. An industry first for any full-size SUV, the patented hybrid system allows these vehicles to return exceptional fuel economy in both city

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

and highway driving while still delivering full-size SUV performance. Imagine a full-size SUV that offers 25- to 30-percent more combined city-highway fuel economy while also providing up to 6,200 pounds (2,812 kg) of usable towing capacity (2WD) and 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg)

SUVs on 4WD models; 12,000 pounds (5,443 kg) GCWR and eight-passenger seating capacity. Making all this possible is GM’s advanced EVT and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS), which work in concert with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology. GM’s new hybrid system not only enables the Tahoe to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone, it also allows the 6.0L V-8

engine to operate in its more economical V-4 mode for longer periods. EPA Mileage Ratings Along with Active Fuel Management, the Tahoe Hybrid uses specific aerodynamic aids and reduced-mass components to help achieve EPA ratings of 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway for 2WD models. With 4WD models, the fuel savings are equally impressive, with the Tahoe Hybrid rated at 20 mpg in both city and highway driving.

Driving for Best Economy By using the analog economy gauge found in the instrument cluster, drivers can maintain the most efficient driving style by keeping the gauge at its optimum economy indication as often as possible. Also, any time the gasoline engine is shut down — indicated when the tachometer needle points to the Auto Stop position, just below the zero mark — the driver will know when the vehicle is being powered only by electricity, which is the most efficient propulsion method. Powertrain Details Drawing on its vast experience in developing hybrid bus propulsion systems, GM designed the EVT to provide the best combination of city and highway fuel economy. Used in concert with the Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management, this all-purpose system is well-suited to provide excellent economy and full-size SUV passenger-carrying, cargo-hauling and trailer-towing capabilities.

Furthermore, the EVT is designed to bolt directly to the standard four-wheeldrive transfer case found on the gasoline-only models for true four-wheel-drive capability. The following major components comprise the Tahoe Hybrid’s unique powertrain system: •Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) •Energy Storage System (ESS) •Vortec 6.0L V-8 with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) Electrically variable transmission (EVT): The key to GM’s all-new EVT is its unique assemblage of two 60 kW electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four traditional hydraulic wet clutches. This arrangement allows continuously variable operation, as well as providing four fixed gear ratios (with operation comparable to that of a standard electronically controlled automatic transmission). A sophisticated Hybrid Optimizing System constantly receives torque-based data from the powertrain and other vehi24

SUVs cle systems, and then determines the most efficient means of propelling the vehicle — either via electric power, gasoline engine power or a combination of the two. The EVT is like having two transmissions in one — continuously variable drive for light-load conditions and fixedratio drive for high-load situations. In Mode One (M1), the EVT provides infinitely variable drive up to 1.70:1, while Mode Two (M2) provides ratios from 1.70:1 to 0.50:1. These two modes include all instances of electric-only (Auto Stop) and electric-gasoline hybrid operation. Depending on driving conditions and vehicle load, a fixed first-gear (G1) ratio of 3.69:1 is available (such as for pulling a large trailer) instead of the variable M1 ratios. Similarly, a second-gear (G2) fixed ratio of 1.70:1 may be selected by the HOS, if needed, before transitioning to the variable M2 ratios. As road speed increases, and depending on driving and vehicle load conditions, variable-ratio M2 operation can be switched instantly to a third-gear (G3) fixed ratio of 1.00:1, and finally to a fourth-gear (G4) fixed ratio of 0.73:1, which is used mainly for steadystate highway cruising. Unlike less advanced hybrid systems, the GM system occasionally shuts down the electric motors, allowing the EVT to function as a conventional automatic transmission. Typically, this fixed-ratio operation occurs at highway speeds or when hauling heavy loads, and can actually be more efficient than operating in electric-gasoline hybrid mode under the same conditions. This is because under high-load situations, when the fixed gears are in use, the electric motors can be used to generate electricity — or, if needed, they can be called on to supply additional torque for improved performance. Energy storage system (ESS): Providing power to the EVT’s two electric motors is a 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS). This battery pack is located under the secondrow seat, where it takes up virtually no additional space and does not interfere with second- or third-row ingress/egress — the fold-and-tumble capability of the second-row seat is maintained, and when the seat is flipped forward, a flat load floor is provided from the liftgate forward to the front seats. The primary function of the ESS is to provide power (300 volts) to the EVT via the Traction Power Inverter Module (TPIM) and to store captured energy produced during regenerative braking. The ESS can also be charged, when neces-

sary, by the gasoline engine via one of the two electric motors when operated in generator mode. In addition to supplying power to the EVT, the ESS also provides power to the air conditioning compressor and the Accessory Power Module (APM), which converts the high-voltage supply to 42 volts for the electric power steering system, and 12 volts for the vehicle battery and other 12-volt electrical accessories. Battery pack durability and reliability are maintained via optimized charge and discharge cycles, as well as a dedicated cooling system that draws air from the passenger compartment. As part of the vehicle’s emission control system, the ESS is warranted for eight years/100,000 miles. Vortec 6.0L V-8 engine: The Vortec 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine is used in the Tahoe Hybrid because of its favorable torque

characteristics. This is especially important because GM engineers adapted the 6.0L V-8 to operate with late intake valve closing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process) for reduced pumping losses and better overall fuel economy. Using flat-top pistons, cylinder heads borrowed from GM’s 5.3L high-output V-8 and a 10.8:1 compression ratio, the Vortec 6.0L V-8 produces 332 horsepower (248 kW) at 5100 rpm and 367 lb.-ft. of torque (498 Nm) at 4100 rpm, yet requires only regular unleaded fuel. In addition, the Vortec 6.0L engine features variable valve timing to control late intake closing, as well as Active Fuel Management, which allows four of the eight cylinders to be shut off during periods of light load. With the benefit of electric boost, the engine is able to stay in V-4 mode for longer periods in the Tahoe Hybrid. SG

Q

uality is not widely seen in today’s consumer market. With companies scrambling to save a buck here and skimp on content there, it is surprising to find a company in our own backyard, built not on profit margins, but on quality. River Raider Off Road started from humble beginnings when a fellow Jeep enthusiast, like you and I, was in search for Jeep parts. Disappointed with parts that didn’t fit or hold up on the trail, Kenny Hauk began fabricating his own parts in his garage. After a few prototypes, the designs began to take form. Welding and fabricating was one thing, but what about the finish? Powder coating seemed to be the predominant option

28

for most manufacturers; however, Hauk was not impressed with its high cost and low durability. The answer? A local sprayin bed liner shop applied a two-part polyurethane-based coating called GatorHyde. Durable, washable, paintable…it seemed like a perfect fit! It was not long before Kenny’s Jeepin’ buddies were hitting him up for some parts for their own rigs. Fast forward two years, River Raider Off Road builds a complete line of hard-core off road Jeep parts. River Raider has perfected their parts and their GatorHyde finish, which is now sprayed in-house. “Since we wanted a fine-textured coating for our parts instead of a rough bed liner finish, we fine-tuned our spray sys-

tem to provide a finish that is far more durable than powder coat, yet easy to clean,” states Hauk. Their product line, starting with off road snorkel systems, has now expanded to offer a wide range of off road parts for the new JK. We decided to try out their JK Tube Fenders. The results? River Raider Off Road has effectively solved every gripe that we have regarding the OEM JK flares, with a functional, stylish alternative. The new JK, endowed with very different lines than that of previous Jeeps, makes it much more challenging to design a steel tube fender that fits well, looks good, and also follows these new contours. Kenny and his team studied the JK

and hit a homerun with their design. River Raider offers front and rear flares, where some of the competitors only offer fronts. The first generation tube flares were only available in full OEM width, but shortly after JKer’s begged for a narrow version, River Raider began to offer the flares in both narrow and wide flavors. They also give you a choice of finishes, including a color-match GatorHyde option. We ordered a set of the full-width flares with the black GatorHyde finish. Four days later the Brown Santa showed up. The packaging was neat and professional. The flares were beautiful! Quality welds, excellent workmanship, and an impressive finish. The stainless steel hardware was complete and the instruction sheet was very easy to understand. I promptly grabbed a front flare and held it up to the Jeep. I couldn’t believe how well it fit into place! The lines on the flare fit perfectly into the recessed flare pockets of the JK. I was even more amazed to

29

see that every hole in the flare’s backing plate lined up with the holes in the Jeep’s body. The fit of the rears was equally impressive. These fenders look awesome and they are tough enough to stand on. The additional tire clearance obtained is equivalent to 3” of lift. The wide flares provide the same amount of coverage as the factory flares, making it easy to stay legal if your state requires it. We really liked the coverage of the wide flares, but decided to pursue a more aggressive look with additional obstacle clearance. So, after another call to Kenny and a few days of waiting, we installed a set of the narrow flares on my Jeep, while my original set of factory width steel fenders found a new home on my buddy’s Jeep. Since all of the holes were already drilled, the new narrow set bolted up in about an hour. These can also be color-matched or purchased with the finish of your choice. In addition to tube fenders, River Raider also produces rear crusher corners for the JK. These super strong corners are made from 3/16th” steel that work in conjunction with the ORO LiteDOT LED Taillights.

They also offer front and rear bumpers, rock sliders, skid plates, aluminum snorkel systems, hi-lift jack mounts, hood vents, and various other Jeep accessories. River Raider Off Road not only designs and fabricates

New Goodyear Wrangler MT/R® with Kevlar® Tackles Off-Road Challenges

When it comes to developing a tire that can take on tough terrain, such as exploring trails or crawling rocks, engineers at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company left no stone unturned. The new Goodyear Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar is the company’s first off-road tire built with the rugged toughness of DuPont™ Kevlar® for enhanced sidewall puncture resistance. The use of Kevlar, an innovative material that is, poundfor-pound, five times stronger than steel, brings superb sidewall cut- and puncture-resistance to an area of the tire that demands extra toughness when driving off-road. It also helps reinforce the sidewall for when drivers return to the pavement for the drive home. “The new Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar updates the legendary off-road performing namesake, which has had a great reputation among serious off-roaders,” said Melissa Montisano, Goodyear’s general manager for light-truck tires. “This new tire will certainly get the attention of anyone who takes off-road traction seriously.” The Kevlar-reinforced sidewalls in the new tire help increase sidewall puncture resistance by 35 percent, compared to the original Wrangler MT/R, a tire well-known for its toughness. However, sidewall toughness is not the only feature of the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar. It also includes a “wrap-

Further, the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar offers these features: Tread Guards, to help resist cuts from stones. Advanced Mud-Flow Geometry, to help provide self-cleaning and traction in mud. Traction Blocks, to help provide additional biting edges on rocks, mud, dirt and sand. A Three-Ply Sidewall, with opposing cord angles for enhanced side wall cutand puncture-resistance. Ramped Tread Blocks, for toughness in off-road driving. Staggered Sidewall Shoulder Blocks, to help provide enhanced traction on rocks and in deep mud. Durawall Rubber, a Goodyear exclusive, which offers rugged toughness and helps resist cuts and punctures in the sidewall. Rim Protector, to help protect wheels from accidental curb-like damage. Rim Lock, to help prevent wheel slip for minimal balancing throughout the life of the tire. Each shoulder block of the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar is stepped “in” and “out” to help give the tire continuous biting edges as it turns through thick mud. Its self-cleaning asymmetric tread design also adds to the performance capability in mud. Available in March, the new tire is offered in 30 sizes, fitting vehicles such as ½-, ¾- and 1-ton pickups, Hummer H2 and H3, Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Xterra, Toyota FJ Cruiser and more. According to Goodyear research, there are more than four million drivers in the light-truck tire segment who use their vehicles primarily for off-road travel. The addition of the Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar adds to Goodyear’s strong Wrangler family of tires, which also includes the Wrangler DuraTrac and Wrangler SilentArmor. Goodyear is one of the world’s largest tire companies. The company employs about 70,000 people and manufactures its products in more than 60 facilities in 26 countries around the world. Manufactured of tough, mandrel-bent, twoinch, heavy-walled tubing, the MBRPinc Roof Rack system is designed to easily transport heavy loads. It’s the perfect solution for transporting a canoe, kayak, bikes, skis, snowboards and much more. Each kit comes complete with all necessary hardware. Tires and Wheels

arger tires offer increased traction for off-roading adventures, which seem to suit Jeep owners. Drawbacks are that they are more expensive and have more highway noise, but aside from those two factors, larger tires seem to be the best option, especially mud terrain patterns. Also, be aware of the increased strain placed on your braking system caused by the mounting of heavier tires. You’ll need to consider upgrading your braking system to compensate for the extra pounds. Lastly, carefully consider the tire pattern that you choose. While the mud terrain pattern is a fairly standard option, keep in mind the highway noise you’ll be getting. It may not bother you, but if it does, choose something you will be happy with. Mamba Wheels – New Mamba Off-Road alloys are unique in design and offer tough and rugged individualism. g n i h s i F & g n i Hunt Westar Energy Plans Special Kansas Novice Turkey Hunts Mentored hunts designed for youth who have never hunted a turkey On the weekends of April 4-5, 11-12, and 18-19, the Westar Energy Green Team will guide youth who have never harvested a turkey at its Jeffrey Energy Center west of Topeka. Assisted by experienced volunteer guides and hunting from stationary ground blinds, youngsters will hunt accompanied by an adult mentor in prime fields closed to the public until the youth hunters are through. While an adult mentor is required, the Green Team is looking for both youth and mentors with little or no turkey hunting experience. (While most participants are teens, young adults who have never hunted are welcome to apply.) The hunt is designed for those who have minimal access to turkey hunting areas, as well. The youth must bring a shotgun and shells. They will hunt from enclosed blinds, so no camouflage clothing is needed. The volunteer guide will bring decoys and calls, as necessary. The youth must provide their own turkey permits for Unit 2 and, if they are 16 or older, have a valid Kansas hunting license. Everything else will be provided. Turkey densities are high in this area,

40

so chances for a close shot are excellent. Sixteen hunters will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply, contact Brad Loveless at 785-575-8115 by Tuesday, March 31, and give him the hunter and adult mentor’s names, a phone number, and a mailing address. Cutt’n and Strutt’n 13 From Hunter’s Specialties DVD Features Over Three Hours Of Turkey Hunting Excitement The Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff and friends once again cover hundreds of miles and endure serious sleep deprivation to bring viewers some of the best turkey hunting footage available in Cutt’n and Strutt’n 13. Join Matt Morrett, Eddie Salter, Alex Rutledge, Rick White and Phillip Vanderpool as they crisscross the country in search of the strutters of spring. With a total of 33 kills on one DVD, this video is, by far, Hunter’s Specialties’ best season yet. Also, featured are former NWTF President Rob Keck, Tom Stuckey, Stan and Brenda Potts, Craig Morgan and

country music pair, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. Plus the H.S. Pro Staff share their helpful tips to make you a better turkey hunter. Whether it’s birds gobbling on a foggy morning or a Tom in full strut in a sundrenched field, these birds can’t help but come to the sound of the new H.S. Ring Zone pan and Infinity Latex calls. With over 3-1/2 hours of action, this video is a “must have” for your spring turkey collection. Suggested retail price for Cutt’n and Strutt’n 13 is $12.99. For more information, visit the Hunter’s Specialties web site at www. hunterspec.com. Nebraska Spring Turkey Season Opens March 25, 2009 Nebraska turkey hunters will have unprecedented opportunities in 2009 when the spring season opens March 25, thanks to a growing bird population. The archery and youth archery seasons begin March 25, the youth shotgun season starts April 11 and the shotgun season begins April 18. All seasons end May 31. A spring 2008 rural mail carrier survey revealed that the turkey population has grown 500 percent in Nebraska since 2002. Kit Hams, big game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said that population now can withstand additional harvest. As a result, the length of the spring seasons has been extended. The seasons end on May 18 last year. Additional harvest means more chances to take to the field, bag a bird, and put food on the table and in the freezer. It also presents more opportunities for young hunters, first-time hunters, and one-time hunters who may want to return to the activity. Hunters harvested a record 19,896 birds (on a record 33,922 permits sold) during the 2008 spring turkey season, compared to 18,001 the year before. Youth permits are available to hunters under the age of 16. Youth age 16 may hunt on youth spring turkey permits provided they are age 15 when they apply and 15 on the opening day of the

archery season. There is no minimum age requirement to hunt turkeys. A Nebraska Habitat Stamp is required for all residents turkey hunters 16 years of age and older and all nonresidents. Nebraskans may enhance the hunting season by taking a child hunting or introducing the sport to new participants. Mentored youth hunts, including the PATH (Passing Along the Heritage) program, are available for this purpose. Spring turkey hunting permits are not valid during the fall turkey season. Turkeys may be found in all 93 counties, anywhere a reasonable amount of woody cover exists. The state has thousands of acres of public land in prime turkey country. Sportsmen hunting on private land must get permission.

•Permit Limit: Each hunter may have as many as three permits. •Bag Limit: One male or bearded female turkey may be taken with each permit. •Permit Fees: Resident, $24; resident landowner, $12.50; nonresident, $91; nonresident landowner, $46; habitat stamp, $16. •To Buy Permits: OutdoorNebraska.org. For more information, please visit OutdoorNebraska.org. The mission of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is stewardship of the state’s fish, wildlife, park, and outdoor recreation resources in the best long-term interests of the people and those resources.

Charter Company Helps Disabled Angler Get on the Water The 2009 salmon fishing season is looking to be a banner year in the North Coast of BC, and there are always great opportunities to catch massive Pacific halibut in the local waters. This year, Blackfeather Fishing Charters is excited to offer fishing opportunities to anglers that experience limited

mobility. Many day-charter fishing vessels are between 19 and 25 feet long, which leave little room for clients to maneuver around a boat. The new Boston Whaler 255 Conquest that Blackfeather Fishing Charters has purchased is 27 feet long and nearly nine feet wide, and includes a rear walk-through transom door. “Last year, many of the people that fished with us appreciated the transom door because they didn’t have to hop into the boat, but could simply walk aboard” said fishing guide Jeff Beckwith. The design and comfort of the Boston Whaler platforms are unmatched in the industry, and was the main reason Blackfeather Fishing Charters sought out the Conquest model when they purchased a new vessel last year. During the winter months, a client inquired about taking her father out for a fishing trip in the summer, but was concerned about his hip condition that limits his movements, balance and prevents him from standing for long periods of time. As she looked at the vessel, she realized that the rear transom door would provide excellent access on and off of the boat, while the two rear facing seats in the Conquest cockpit are perfect

41

to sit and fish for salmon and halibut. An alteration to the boat’s weather-curtain would also allow for unobstructed access to either side of the boat from a sitting position. This was a good start, but one more change was needed to be completed before the guide felt it was ready to go. The halibut equipment that is used includes deep-sea Okuma fishing rods and Avet 30/2 two-speed reels designed for hauling up 200 pound halibut from the ocean floor in depths of 300 feet of water. This can be a heavy and tiring experience, so the boat has been equipped with custom gimbal mount rod holders that allow the clients to play their fish from the comfort of their seat without having to worry about standing in a rocking boat. “We believe that a complete fishing experience should focus on enjoying your time out on the water” said Beckwith. The 2009 salmon fishing season is looking to be a banner year in the North Coast of BC, and there are always great opportunities to catch massive Pacific halibut in the local waters. Blackfeather Fishing Charters has spent the winter months preparing their boat for an exciting upcoming season, and looks forward to guiding anyone that has a desire to

fish on a saltwater fishing experience of a lifetime. If you would like more information on Blackfeather Fishing Charters, please visit them at www.blackfeathercharters. com. Get Ready for a New Season: Le Shack – a Very Special Fishing Place When Le Shack was founded almost 50 years ago, the original members observed a morning ritual. With drink in hand and in various stages of dress, they lined up outside, faced east and observed the morning toast as one of the founders bellowed Sol er oppe, a Norwegian fish poem. Then they headed back into the shack for a hefty breakfast and sharing last night’s fishing results. Things are a little different today, but the fundamental spirit and camaraderie still support Le Shack.

When Le Shack was founded almost 50 years ago, the original members observed a morning ritual. With drink in hand and in various stages of dress, they lined up outside, faced east and observed the morning toast as one of the founders bellowed Sol er oppe, a Norwegian fish poem. Then they headed back into the shack for a hefty breakfast and sharing last night’s fishing results. Things are a little different today, but the fundamental spirit and camaraderie still support Le Shack…a very special fishing place, as you will read in this engaging book. Le Shack -- a very special fishing place, Jim C. Chapralis’s most recent book, shares the real tale of an endearing, rustic fishing cabin, the rivers of rural Wisconsin, and the engaging experiences of a dozen anglers who are members of Le Shack club – all drawn to the hidden charms of Midwestern waters. “Through the years, I have told people stories of Le Shack. No matter where they live, many say it reminds them of their own experiences…a cabin or lodge hidden in the woods away from it all with its own stories and characters,” Chapralis said. Le Shack details its evolution from a minimum-comfort farmhouse, complete with resident mice and soaring bats, an outhouse, and no indoor running water to a more comfortable Le Shack II across the river that features indoor plumbing and lacks rodent guests. The book introduces Le Shack’s members and its traditions, and is laced with many expert tips for small stream fishing (such as wearing river branches as camouflage to approach the trout). Author Jim C. Chapralis was fortunate enough to fish in almost 40 countries, going to some countries as many as a dozen times, during his 35 years in pioneering the international fishing travel business. “Believe me,” Chapralis noted, “it was a great privilege to fish such storied places as the Alta River in Norway, or to fish with famous angling writers such as Al McClane (my fishing hero). But long ago I realized that I was addicted to the streams and ‘cricks’ of Central Wisconsin.” Inspiring and informative, Le Shack will delight anglers and non-anglers alike with the tales of the charismatic guests, their quirky experiences at the shack, and their practical tips. Author Jim C. Chapralis was a champion tournament caster. He also authored Fishing Passion, Master Your Fly Casting, World Guide to Fly Fishing, and co-authored Fishing Escapes. He passed just weeks after Le Shack was published a year ago. Illustrator Charles B. Mitchell, resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, is an award-winning artist whose work has been featured in American Artist, Encyclopedia Britannica, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and other publications, as well as in museums. Le Shack – a very special fishing place, is a 216-page (5 ½ x 8 ½”), soft-cover book, including 69 black/white illustrations, and sells for $16.95 (U.S.). Le Shack is distributed by Independent Publishers Group and is available from Barnes and Noble, Borders and other fine bookstores, online retailers such as Amazon.com, wholesalers, and many fly/tackle shops across the country. Camping Tips...

ith the warmer weather upon us, many are shaking the dust off of camping gear and preparing for trips to commune with Mother Nature. These tips offer great ideas for both the seasoned camper and the first-timer. First-time campers may feel slightly overwhelmed when choosing the items they will need when camping. It's obvious that they will need tents and sleeping bags, but the debates usually come when deciding about cooking needs, what kinds of toiletries, and so forth. Use the following tips to prepare for a wonderful, hassel-free trip without forgetting the necessities. And keep in mind, it's a very safe thing to let someone know exactly where you will be and when you expect to return. You can't rely on cell phones to work in all areas. SG

Destination Petroglyph panel near historic Wolfe Ranch in Arches National Park. As the ancestral Puebloan and Fremont peoples were leaving the area, nomadic Shoshonean peoples such as the Ute and Paiute entered the area and were here as the first Europeans arrived in 1776. The petroglyph panel near Wolfe Ranch is believed to have some Ute images since it shows people on horseback, and horses were adopted by the Utes only after they were introduced by the Spanish.

Moab Parks, Past and Present 50

Destination Moab, Utah, nestled in the red rocks of Canyonlands Country, is Utah’s Adventure Capital. The scenery, the surroundings, the activities, the history – it is all inviting, and calling you to come see it!!!

M

oab was first settled in 1855 by Mormons who quickly abandoned their remote outpost because they were frightened of the area’s Native American population. It was resettled in 1876. Since that time, the city and its people have carved an existence as changing as the eroded desert around it. Today, the primary industry is tourism. The town, beautifully set near the banks of the Colorado River, is the jumping off point for recreational adventures of every kind. Moab is the gateway to two of Utah’s five national parks. Arches National Park has the world’s largest concentration of natural stone arches gracing 73,000 acres, including the State’s signature arch, Delicate Arch. Canyonlands National Park is the largest national park in the state, and its diversity staggers the imagination. Thousand foot views down into river canyons, or up, to red rock pinnacles, cliffs and spires are truly awe-inspiring. The parks geophysical characteristics have naturally sectioned it into three areas called: Island in the Sky, the Needles and the Maze. Both parks are open year

round, with visitor centers located in each park. Recreational activities in the park include hiking, backpacking, rafting, canoeing, sightseeing, photography, four wheel driving (on designated roads only), technical rock climbing (with a permit), mountain biking and road biking. Like the arches in the park that took so many years to form and tell a story of the climatic changes so prevalent in the high desert, so are the stories that we find on numerous rock art sites on cliffs and boulders. People whose livelihood was based on the harvesting of wild resources, and later on of agriculture, populated this region. Petroglyphs and pictographs left behind help to tell their stories. Petroglyphs, are an engraved symbols (glyphs) pecked or abraded into the rock. Pictographs are picture symbols painted on the rocks in one or more colors made from mineral pigments or plant dyes. Panels of both types, and panels which exhibit both styles, are found in the area, and plenty are accessible to passenger vehicles or very short hikes. The area around Moab also has many stone structures such as dwellings, granaries (storage units) and kivas

Destination (ceremonial and community structures). Evidence of earlier use patterns consists of temporary campsites, broken stone tools, potshards and other implements. Some of these implements can be seen at the Dan O’Laurie Museum in downtown Moab or the Bureau of Land Management office on Dogwood. Information on the sites around Moab can be found in the Moab Area Rock Art Auto Tour brochure available at the Travel Council or Moab Information Center. Going way back in history, there are sites around the area that confirm the presence of prehistoric animals. Dinosaurs that is!! Dinosaurs left both skeletons and an equally intriguing reminder, their footprints, in what was once swampy mud, and now is sandstone. Although the tracks may be hard to spot, once you find them they provide the impetus for plenty of imaginative speculation. A Sauropod Dinosaur Track Site located 23 miles north of Moab is the first sauropod (five-toed herbivore) tracks every reported in Utah. Information on these and other sites is available at the Moab Information Center. The past and the present have come together with tours of the national parks, coupled with activities within the parks

The Colorado River offers many exciting choices for rafters. The "Daily" section is a 13 mile day trip with six Class 2-3 rapids. Westwater Canyon, northeast of Moab, is a popular choice for a one or two day whitewater adventure. On this 17 mile stretch the river flows through a deep inner gorge of Precambrian black rock, backed by 1,000 foot high canyon walls. This section of river, nicknamed the "Little Grand" of the Colorado River, boasts 11 whitewater rapids up to Class 4. Deep in Canyonlands National Park, Cataract Canyon is the most famous Utah stretch of the Colorado. Trips can take as little as one or up to seven days to travel the 112 miles from Moab to Hite Marina on Lake Powell. There are 26 rapids, up to Class 4.

GM Models Sweep GAAMA Awards at Auto Show A five-person panel of GAAMA judges chose the GM models over dozens of other candidates and presented the "GAAMA Peach" awards prior to the auto show opening March 13. "The judging was very close with several candidates gathering votes from the panel. But in the end, the Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac SRX were the clear winners," said GAAMAPresident Jim Tucker. "The 2010 Buick LaCrosse embodies contemporary elegance," said Brad Flaaen, Regional Sales & Marketing, Buick, Pontiac and GMC. "With its unique design elements, fit and finish, and advanced technology – the new LaCrosse will certainly provide consumers with a world-class experience. Our award-winning LaCrosse builds on the success of Enclave as the next step in Buick's revitalization and we thank GAAMA for recognizing this." "Cadillac boasts a tradition of bold, head-turning design and our 2010 SRX Crossover builds on that reputation," said Jennifer Costabile, Regional Sales & Marketing, GM Premium Channel. "The redesigned SRX being awarded Best 2010 model by GAAMAis proof positive that technical precision blended with old-world craftsmanship will continue to charm the emotional and pragmatic sides of our luxury consumers." Both vehicles are on display at the auto show through March 22. This was the first year of the awards from GAAMA, a year-old association comprised of automotive journalists, corporate communications specialists, media organizations, auto manufacturers and other professionals working in the automotive media industry from the greater Atlanta area as well as other nearby cities in the Southeast. GAAMA is looking forward to expanding the awards program at the 2010 AJC International Auto Show. RV Industry Optimistic Economic Stimulus Plans Will Help Industry Rebound The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) expressed optimism today that the federal economic credit and stimulus packages, which include provisions to stimulate RV lending and friendly tax treatment for new motorhome purchases, will help promote sales and aid in the industry’s economic recovery.  Like many of the nation’s manufacturing sectors, the RV industry has experienced a sharp decline in sales. As a result, plants have closed and workers have been laid off.  The industry anticipates that the stimulus package may help to restore consumer confidence by staunching job losses. “We’re hopeful that the stimulus will work as planned,” says RVIA President Richard Coon. “It contains favorable elements

Industry News that we hope will help improve the economic environment for our industry and stimulate RV sales.”  One provision in the stimulus bill provides a deduction for sales or excise taxes on the first $49,500 of a new motorhome purchase.   “This is the kind of consumer incentive that will stimulate demand in what is already an RV buyer’s market with great bargains for consumers,” says Coon. In addition, the inclusion of RV consumer loans and dealer floor plan loans in the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) could ease credit and stimulate RV lending. “Getting RV consumer and dealer business loans added to the TALF program is a big step forward for the industry,” says Coon. “TALF will help qualified dealers to purchase RVs from manufacturers, and consumers to borrow money to buy RVs. As credit frees up, RV sales will increase and the industry will rebound.  “Pent-up demand for RVs is building,” says Coon. “Attendance at RV retail shows throughout the country has exceeded expectations, but even buyers with strong credit histories have not been getting approved for loans. In addition, RV dealers haven’t been able to secure business loans to buy inventory.”  Reports from RV retail shows indicate that shoppers are impressed with new RV products that are smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient than previous models. “RVing is a tremendously popular lifestyle that will endure despite these tough economic times because it’s the most costeffective way for families to have a great vacation,” says Coon. “Solid traffic at RV shows and the innovation going on within our industry are signs that the long-term outlook remains positive.  All of these factors point to more American jobs in our made-inAmerica industry.”

achieve thousands of “conquest” sales for the Kia brand – appealing especially to the young and the young-at-heart. “The innovative Kia Soul defies categorization and encourages customers to build an emotional bond with this rebellious new car. Soul presents consumers with such a broad selection of styling, comfort and equipment choices, that it redefines the concept of freedom.  It’s a brand new urban car packed full of liberating ideas – a car that challenges consumers to ‘free your mind’, a car that will encourage them to rethink everything they know about Kia,” enthuses Panu Vainamo, General Manager Marketing, Kia Motors Europe. Kia Soul is a five-door hatchback with front-wheel drive, a high roofline and an unusually long wheelbase. Soul will offer cavernous passenger space that matches or even outperforms many vehicles with much larger exterior dimensions. Luggage capacity is also generous –340 liters with the rear seats upright, the same as the Kia cee’d hatchback. “Highly competitive levels of specification and state-of-the-art active and passive safety equipment will ensure that consumers convert their initial emotional attraction to Soul into a purchase decision without worrying that their heart might be unwisely overruling their head,” adds Vainamo. When Soul goes on sale in Europe in late 2008/early 2009, customers will be able to choose from a line-up of up to 15 Soul cars, with five equipment levels, two engines (with manual or automatic transmissions), and a range of option packs – depending on individual markets. Distinctive styling like no Kia before! Kia Motors Corporation Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, has overseen the transformation of Kia Soul from 2006 concept fantasy to its 2008 production reality.  “The new Kia Soul will be a breakthrough vehicle for Kia on its journey to be seen as a design-led company and the maker of distinctive cars which consumers aspire to own.

Industry News

Kia Soul “Conceived in the USA, developed in Korea and fine-tuned in Europe, I strongly believe that the production Kia Soul urban crossover is a completely resolved design that has successfully achieved its own distinctive style. “The visual themes and core proportions of the original Detroit Show concept car have been largely retained, while a range of subtle styling and innovative equipment choices have been skilfully created to enable Soul to be tailored to the specific requirements of consumers in different global markets – with cars sourced from a single factory,” adds Schreyer. Embracing the “freedom” to customise Kia expects many Soul owners to embrace the “freedom” of this latest model by ordering the top grade model and by specifying one of the many factory fitted ‘option packs’ exclusively available for this version – to fully immerse themselves in the spirit of their new car. As with other members of the Kia family, the Kia Soul will also be available with a range of dealer-fit customizing components to suit particular family and leisure activities. Producing a new global model Kia Motors Corporation is planning to manufacture up to 136,000 examples of the Kia Soul annually at its Gwangju facility in Korea. The plant has been extensively refurbished for its new role, enhancing vehicle quality and greatly increasing the flexibility of the production processes to accommodate the multiple derivatives that are core to the new Kia Soul philosophy. Overall sales volumes are expected to be split 36,000 to the domestic Korean market, 50,000 units to North America, 30,000 to Europe and 20,000 to other “General” markets worldwide.  A dedicated version of Kia Soul for the Chinese market will be produced locally in China at the rate of 40,000 units annually, starting during 2009.
