portsman's Gear is rolling into summer with some hot new products that you are going to love! With the hot summers we have here in the south, we have learned the value of staying hydrated and Outdoor Products has a great line of BPA-Free Sports Bottles designed to help out with that. These bottles are perfect for camping or trips into the great outdoors.

And speaking of camping, this issue contains a wealth of information regarding private campgrounds that are located along some of the most scenic rivers in America. You'll find great ideas about where to head to next for a terrific outdoor adventure with activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and river tubing. Remember to always use caution and be responsible while on the waterways! Vernon Summerlin is one of my favorite authors of fun fish stories and he has a wonderful tale of summer bluegills and shellcrackers inside these pages. You'll learn where to go to catch the big ones and what to lure them with. Check out Vern's tale on page 46. I am seeing that with the slowing of the economy, many folks are taking vacations for shorter periods of time and looking for real bargains this summer. A couple of super family trips that include some new opportunities are mentioned on page 54 & 55. Find out what Callaway Gardens has to offer plus take a look at Dollywood's KidsFests. Both offer family fun and won't break the bank. Enjoy your summer guys! It'll be gone before you know it, so dust off the fishing poles and get outside! Next issue is our annual SEMA issue, so don't forget to pick up a copy...it promises to be a good one! Until next time, Becky J. Beall

Are you Ready? debris. Powdercoat is then applied by electrically charging the bumper and dusting the bumper with charged particles of paint. The dusted unit is then baked in a giant oven to melt and cure the powder onto the bumper. We really like the looks of TrailReady bumpers. They are designed to follow the styling of today’s trucks with a perfect fit. The bumpers are relatively small and compact – unlike some of the big gaudy stuff we’ve seen. We also like the overall smooth look. It’s a real testament to TrailReady designers in building a large bumper that can house a winch completely inside and still look sleek and stylish. ront-end protection is a necessity on today’s trucks for work, show, or play. TrailReady has been designing and building top notch bumpers for over 10 years and is the originator of “modern” smooth plate steel bumpers that are now seen throughout the industry. They build units for most full sized trucks from the 1980s to current models.

Standard Features - Quad Light Ports for 6” and 4” lights, “D” Ring Shackle Mounts, and winch capacity to 16,500 lbs.

TrailReady bumpers offer protection from animal strikes – deer and elk, not a problem. The impact zone of the bumper is ¼” steel. The internal structure of the bumper is engineered for mounting a winch as well as providing geometrical stiffness to the structure. The grill guards – across the top of the hood and over the headlights – are a beefy 2-1/2” diameter tube. In the case of the pre-runner model – a massive 31/2” diameter tube.

Winch Access – Ample space to work winch controls and maintain cable

8

TrailReady bumpers are made in the U.S.A. – in Oregon. With so much work going overseas these days, it’s nice to know there are a few hold-outs still doing business stateside. Teams of people and equipment work together laser burning, bending, fitting, and welding parts. Finishing crews smooth the welded bumpers and prep them for the application of color. Each bumper is sandblasted and then dipped in a phosphate acid wash to eliminate all grease and

TrailReady builds bumpers for specialty fleet customers including contractors for Military, Commercial, Law Enforcement, and Emergency across Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and the Middle East.

Company Profile

rom the privateers to the pros, KC has been pioneering higherquality off-road lighting since 1970. Since the beginning, KC’s involvement with motorsports has been critical to the process of designing, engineering and manufacturing the most advanced auxiliary lighting available. Their competition HID lights are now found on many winning off-road race vehicles including Scott Douglas, Curt LeDuc, Kreg Donahoe, Randy Merritt, Rick Doetsch and Todd Wyllie. As the original manufacturer of off-road auxiliary lighting, KC Hilites not only set the standard for the category – they created it. KC was started by Pete Brown in his garage in Saugus, California, as he was looking for some improved lighting for his pickup. He started using landing lights from aircraft, adapting them to his truck, and then figured out the way they mounted wouldn’t stand up to the rigors of the now growing off-road community of race buggies and pickups. Available lighting at the time was limited to 55-watt halogen lamps that were in his words, “really disappointing” in the desert. He made a few sets for friends, and KC was in business. Working with neighbors out of his garage, he assembled the lights, built the wiring harnesses and sold the packages to off-roaders and local shops. KC’s Daylighter, as it came to be known, would serve as the backbone of KC’s development for years to come. KC designed the special patented isolated rubber mount for the Daylighter when they noticed too many failures due to the severe vibration within the metal housing during his off-road adventures. Many long hours were spent with GE engineers, learning about the intricacies of lighting, sealed beams, filaments, the varied types of construction, wattage and what candlepower was really all about. At that time, they devised a way to completely encircle the bulb in rubber, helping isolate it.

The 70s and 80s brought more innovations in lighting, and KC was at the forefront. Many race teams using KC’s included pioneers Walker Evans and Ivan Stewart. In the 90’s, KC developed the now-famous HID (High Intensity Discharge) lighting system, based on the same Metal Halide concept used to illuminate giant sports complexes. KC offers HIDs for off-road use, and they’re also great for commercial and industrial applications. Many ATVs and Rhinos are now running HIDs and other KC lighting products. Today, KC is all about quality. Their lights are built tough, to last. Inside and out, KC has never accepted anything less than the highest quality materials and workmanship for their products. Their reflectors are meticulously polished to produce the brightest possible reflective surface. Bulbs are specially

designed for the intended applications. KC light housings feature only the finest, toughest finishes. All stainless steel housings are polished and sealed for enduring beauty, and long life. Their chrome and black housings are triple plated and polished. Their black painted housings are tough enough to withstand brutal salt spray tests. KC’s nylon composite housings feature an extremely tough combination of plastics and resins. It is this absolute commitment to total quality that allows KC to back every KC product with their industry leading 23-year warranty. W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

Today the company is owned and run by Michael DeHaas, Brown’s stepson. KC’s newest products, developed by DeHaas and his team, are the SlimLite and Rally 800 series of lights. The sixinch diameter SlimLite is available in chrome, black powder coat and a unique finish that looks like plated titanium. Offering long-range illumination with up to 300,000 candlepower, and driving light configurations from 120-150,000 candlepower, and fog lights at 25-60,000 candlepower, the SlimLite series offers a variety of options for every application. Their new Rally 800 lights, featuring an 8” diameter housing, come in stainless steel in either black or polished finishes. Their slim profile and full pivoting base allows for wide range of mounting options. Rally 800 lights are available in Long Range or Driving beam patterns, with super bright 130-watt halogen or ultra bright HID models. Recognizing that off-road lights need a good place for mounting, KC developed a new series of Lite Bars. Their products are an attractive alternative to bulky bumpers and grille guards. They feature a great looking black powder coat finish, and are also available in an optional chrome look powder coat for many applications. Made from 1-3/4” O.D. steel tubing, they include light tabs for mounting 2, 3 or 4 KC eight-inch diameter lights, depending on the model. Their Jeep bars, made from 1-/2” tubing, include light tabs for mounting 2, 3 or 5 lights, depending on the model. Recognizing the need for better lighting, DeHaas spends many weekends at off-road races, working with racers to develop high quality, super-bright lighting to help them win at night. The scariest part of off-road competition is when the sun goes down, there’s no moon, and you are relying strictly on your lights to reach speeds over 125 miles per hour. DeHaas has spent many hours at the races, and in race cars, helping him develop a secondsense when it comes to lighting design. According to DeHaas, the future of KC – is bright.SG

ith racing-inspired powertrain and suspension features, the Corvette Z06 delivers exceptional levels of capability and technology, making it one of the best performance values on the market. Design – The Z06 has an unmistakable and aggressive appearance, with design cues that include: •A wide front fascia with a large, forward-facing grille opening, a splitter along the bottom and wheel opening extensions along the sides to provide aerodynamic downforce •A cold-air scoop in front of the hood that integrates an air inlet system for the engine •The trailing edge of the front wheel opening is radiused to achieve improved drag, but protects the body finish with a tough molding, and a large air extractor is located behind the wheel •A fixed-roof body style optimizes body rigidity and mass •Wider rear fenders with flares cover the massive rear tires and a brake cooling scoop in front of the wheels visually balances the fender extractor •A tall rear spoiler houses the CHMSL on the top of the rear fascia •10-spoke spider-design wheels (18inch, front; 19-inch, rear) •Four large stainless steel exhaust outlets •Z06 badging on the carbon fiber front fenders The aerodynamics of the Z06’s exterior were shaped by the experiences of the Corvette racing program, where highspeed stability and cornering capability are paramount. And while the race cars use large rear wings, the Z06’s elevated spoiler provides sufficient downforce to 12

balance the roadworthy front splitter without adversely affecting aerodynamic drag. The Z06’s Cd is 0.34. For all its race-inspired functionality, the Z06 is designed to be a daily-driveable high-performance vehicle. To that end, comfort and convenience are held to a very high standard. High-Intensity Discharge lighting, fog lamps, leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning, cabin air filtration and head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter are standard. The Z06 gauge cluster displays the Z06 logo on the 7000-redline tachometer and has a readout on the oil pressure gauge to reflect the higher standard pressure of the dry-sump oiling system. The seats feature two-tone leather surfaces, with Z06-logo embroidery and contrasting stitching. Z06 options include a Bose audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer, Competition Gray or chrome wheels, a telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, side-impact air bags, a navigation system with GPS and universal home remote. LS7 engine – The Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine delivers 505 horsepower (377 kW) in a 3,180-pound (1,442 kg) package – a combination that delivers 0-60 performance of 3.7 seconds in first gear, quarter-mile times of 11.7 seconds at 125 mph and a top speed of 198 mph (as recorded on Germany’s Autobahn). It also provides maximum lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and 60-0 braking in 111.3 feet; it also circuited Germany’s famed N ü rburgring in a time of 7:43 from a standing start. The LS7 reintroduced the 427-cubicinch engine to the Corvette lineup. It is easily identified under the hood by red engine covers with black lettering. The W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

LS7 shares the same basic Gen IV V-8 architecture as the Corvette’s 6.2-liter LS3, but it uses a different cylinder block casting with pressed-in steel cylinder liners to accommodate the engine’s larger diameter, 4.125-inch (104.8 mm) cylinder bores. Internally, the LS7’s reciprocating components make use of racing-derived lightweight technology, including titanium connecting rods and intake valves, to help boost horsepower and rpm capability. The rpm fuel shut-off limit is 7,100 rpm. One of the clearest examples of the LS7’s race-bred technology is its use of titanium connecting rods. They weigh just 464 grams apiece and besides being lightweight, which enhances high-rpm performance and rpm range, titanium makes the rods extremely durable. The LS7’s CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads are designed to meet the high airflow demands of the engine’s 7.0-liter displacement. A hydraulic roller camshaft with 0.588/0.593-inch valve lift is used to allow plenty of air to circulate in and out of the engine. To ensure optimal, uninterrupted airflow, the LS7’s heads have straight, tunnel-like intake runners. Very large by production-vehicle standards – even racing standards – they are designed to maintain fast airflow velocity, providing excellent torque at low rpm and exhilarating horsepower at high rpm. The heads feature 70-cc combustion chambers that are fed by huge, 56-mm-diameter titanium intake valves. They are complemented by 41-mm sodium-filled exhaust valves. To accommodate the large valve face diameters, the heads’ valve seats are siamesed; and, taken from experience with

Cars the engines of C6.R race cars, the LS7’s valve angles are held at 12 degrees – vs. 15 degrees for the LS2 – to enhance airflow through the ports. The LS7 has a dry-sump oiling system designed to keep the engine fully lubricated during the high cornering loads the Corvette Z06 is capable of producing. An engine compartment-mounted 10.5quart (9.9 liters) reservoir delivers oil at a constant pressure to a conventional-style oil pump pick-up at the bottom of the engine. The pressurized oil feed keeps the oil pick-up continually immersed in oil at cornering loads exceeding 1 g. Oil circulates through the engine and down to the oil pan, where it is sent back to the reservoir via a scavenge pump. The large-capacity reservoir, combined with a high efficiency air-to-oil cooler, provides necessary engine oil cooling under the demands of the engine’s power output. With the dry-sump system, oil is added to the engine via the reservoir tank – which includes the oil level dipstick. Drivetrain – The Corvette Z06’s powertrain and drivetrain systems are matched to the LS7’s performance capability. The light, four-into-one headers discharge into close-coupled catalytic converters and through two-mode mufflers. The mufflers each feature a vacuum-actuated outlet valve, which controls exhaust noise during low-load operation but opens for maximum power. At the rear of the LS7 engine, a single-mass flywheel and lightweight, highcapacity clutch channel torque to the rear transaxle. The six-speed manual transmission has been strengthened to handle the LS7’s increased torque load. The transmission includes a pump that sends transmission fluid to the front radiator for cooling. Upon its return, the fluid removes additional heat from the differential lube before returning to the transmission. The six-speed transmission connects to a limited-slip differential, with enlarged ring and pinion gears. Stronger axle half-shafts with tougher universal joints transmit power to the rear wheels.

Structure – The Z06 has a unique aluminum body structure for optimum stiffness and light weight for the fixedroof body style. Perimeter rails are one-piece hydroformed aluminum members featuring cast suspension nodes, which replace many welded steel components on other Corvette models. Other castings, stampings and extrusions are combined into the innovative structure with state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies. Advanced structural composites featuring carbon-fiber are bonded to the aluminum structure. The wider front wheelhouses, for example, are carbon composites and the passenger compartment floors combine carbon-fiber skins with an ultra-lightweight balsa wood core. The Z06 has a new magnesium cradle that serves as the attachment point for the engine and some front suspension components. Magnesium is lighter than aluminum yet incredibly strong. The magnesium cradle helps improve the frontto-rear weight distribution, as do carbon-fiber front fenders and wheelhouses. Engineers also moved the battery from underhood to a position in the rear cargo area, behind one of the rear wheels. The mass reductions are offset by some added performance enablers, including dry-sump lubrication, exhaust system with outlet valves, larger wheels and tires, larger brakes and larger roll stabilizers. Suspension and brakes – The Z06 retains the 105.7-inch (2686-mm) wheelbase of other Corvette models, as well as the short-long arm suspension and transverse spring design, but it rides on allnew wheels, tires and brakes, as well as its own rear spring and roll stabilizer.

W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

The firmer suspension works harmoniously with large 18 x 9.5-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels and 275/35ZR18 tires in the front, and 19 x 12-inch cast-spun aluminum wheels with 325/30ZR19 tires in the rear. The tires use the latest extended-mobility technology from Goodyear to provide a satisfactory ride, but still allow the vehicle to achieve lateral acceleration of more than 1 g. The extended-mobility tires eliminate the need – and weight – for a spare tire and jack or inflator kit, while also reducing the chance of a sudden loss of handling capability. Complementing the suspension system and large rolling stock is an equally capable four-wheel disc brake system, consisting of 14-inch (355 mm) vented and cross-drilled front rotors and 13.4inch (340 mm) vented and cross-drilled rear rotors. The front rotors are acted upon by large, red-painted six-piston calipers that use six individual brake pads. Individual brake pads are used because they deliver more equalized wear compared to what would otherwise be a pair of very long single-piece pads. For the rear brakes, four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads are used. A four-channel ABS system is standard, as is a very competent active handling system – complete with a Competitive Driving mode. *SAE certified.

Cadillac CT S V6 DI Performance Sedan

T

he Cadillac CTS enters 2009 riding a wave of acclaim from critics and consumers. The 2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year, Cadillac’s sports sedan may be entering the elite class of the auto world’s most desired cars, thanks to a remarkable blend of dramatic design, technology and craftsmanship. CTS sales are rising sharply, with monthly sales increases consistently exceeding 50 percent. In 2009, the top of the CTS range expands with the heavily anticipated introduction of CTS-V, the 550-horsepower (410 kW) model representing Cadillac’s ultimate expression of performance and luxury. “CTS is earning the acclaim of luxury buyers, the most discerning critics,” said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. “It has earned a position as one of the premier luxury sports sedans, further strengthening Cadillac’s historic resurgence into the top tier of global luxury brands.” The redesigned CTS has also been lauded for its safety. Features such as a robust body structure that helps absorb crash energy and six standard air bags – including a segment-first dual depth passenger frontal air bag, active headrests and head curtain side air bags – helped it earn a Top Safety Pick recognition by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Changes to 2009 Cadillac CTS are evolutionary, comprising content and feature revisions that reflect market demands. Design At a glance, there is no mistaking the CTS for anything but a contemporary Cadillac. Signature exterior cues include vertically oriented “light pipes,” horizontal spline lines and a dihedral-shaped hood. It also strikes a sporting stance, with a wide track, communicating a dramatic presence unlike most traditional luxury sedans and the car’s performance capabilities CTS’ athletic form is characterized by sculpted fenders. They feature side air extractors that recall a styling element from Cadillac’s Sixteen concept car; and an UltraView ”double” sunroof is avail20

able, spanning both the front and rear seats. Seven-spoke, 17-inch wheels or available nine-spoke, 18-inch wheels surround the CTS’ high-performance brake calipers and rotors. Both painted and machined finishes are available for the standard 17inch wheels. The larger, 18-inch wheels are available in a premium multicoat finish or a high-polish finish. Interior Elements The CTS’ interior emphasizes technical precision with elegant, hand-crafted details. Analog instrumentation is streamlined and defined by bright accents. An integrated center stack design, with either a satin metallic finish or genuine Sapele Pommele wood, blends into the lower instrument panel that sweeps forward and away of front-seat occupants. The hand-assembled center console leads seamlessly into the center stack, providing a sportier “cockpit” feel for the driver and passenger without compromising space. Available heated and ventilated seats incorporate “thin-seat” technology for maximum occupant comfort and enhanced rear-seat leg, knee and foot room. French stitching is used throughout the interior, including the upper instrument panel, door inserts, seats and the shifter boot. The leather-wrapped steering wheel includes standard integrated controls for cruise and audio system. Clean, white ambient light emitting diode (LED) accent lighting is available, positioned in the door pulls, foot wells and recessed between the upper and lower instrument panels. The result is a dramatic effect similar to recessed lighting used in contemporary homes. Powertrains Direct injection technology helps the CTS offer more power while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. It delivers fuel more precisely to increase the efficiency of combustion. This means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions created. With the CTS’ 3.6L V-6, this translates to 304 horsepower (227 kW),* no loss of fuel efficiency and a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

It also runs on less expensive regular unleaded gasoline. The standard 3.6L VVT engine that produces 263 horsepower (196 kW) and 253 lb.-ft (343 Nm) of torque serves as the base engine in North America and is available in rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts. The 2.8L VVT engine is available only on rear-drive models of the CTS offered outside the U.S. It is an all-aluminum, 60-degree DOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder engine that develops 211 horsepower (157 kW) at 6,800 rpm and 182 lb.-ft. (247 Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm. All CTS engines are matched with fuelsaving six-speed transmissions, including an Aisin six-speed manual or an electronically controlled Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic. The Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic features driver shift control, which enables on-demand clutch-less manual shifts. On vehicles equipped with AWD, the 6L50 is partnered with an active transfer case that automatically transfers torque from the rear to the front of the vehicle for optimal traction, safety and performance. The AWD system’s default setting is a 40/60 torque split, but as the conditions merit, all of the torque can be applied to either axle. A limited-slip differential also is available. Driving Dynamics The CTS chassis enables a great balance of performance and luxury. The hardware includes structural enhancements via a tower-to-tower brace; large, four-wheel disc brakes and premium steering. Three suspension tuning levels are available: FE1 with 17-inch wheels; FE2 with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires and the performance-oriented FE3, with 18-inch summer performance tires. For 2009, the highly capable Summer Performance package receives a major new addition, as steering wheel-mounted shifters for the six-speed automatic transmission are included. The CTS uses an independent short/ long arm ( SLA) front suspension system. Its performance characteristics are optimized with the use of aluminum for the upper and lower control arms, as well as the knuckles, reducing overall mass.

Cars Hydraulic control arm front bushings are used for motion control and help minimize high-speed road vibration by damping energy transmitted through the vehicle structure. Also, hollow front stabilizer bars bring weight savings and are sized specifically to each of the three available suspension levels. A multi-link rear suspension, with a fully isolated subframe, delivers excellent suspension kinematics that contributes to a superior ride with excellent handling. It provides maximum tuning flexibility so that the suspension can be tuned to react in a predetermined manner, such as during high-lateral cornering forces, where the rear wheels will respond with the correct camber and toe to avoid rapid destabilizing changes. The CTS features advanced chassis technology in the form of Cadillac’s StabiliTrak electronic chassis control system. It integrates the car’s standard fourchannel ABS with the full-function traction control, hydraulic brake assist and engine drag control systems. Craftsmanship and Quietness Every CTS features Cadillac’s “cutand-sew” interior process that combines advanced technology with the hand-rendered precision of expert craftsmen. Coverings for components such as the instrument panel, center console and door trim are cut, sewn and wrapped by hand. This enables details such as decorative French stitching and the near elimination of gaps and seams, for a superbly tailored appearance. Quietness is another measure of CTS’ craftsmanship. Detailed analysis of sound and vibration was lavished on the CTS during its development. This reduced overall cabin noise via improved body sealing and sound insulation. It also focused on tuning the quality of the remaining sound. A perforated pattern, for example, has been added to the inside of the tailpipes to increase resonance, adding more pleasing, low-frequency sounds to counteract high-frequency noise. On the exterior, quieting elements and manufacturing techniques include an innovative laser brazing process that affixes the roof panel more crisply; installing the windshield glass without visible rubber seals and joints; and triplesealed doors. Infotainment and Vehicle Technology CTS incorporates the best attributes, advanced technologies and electronics, including: •Integrated iPod/MP3 capability 22

– Designed in consultation with the engineers behind the iPod and other computer and entertainment industry experts, the center console of the CTS is tailored for MP3 players, iPods or other digital music devices. They can be charged via a USB port, which also enables playlists to appear on the car’s touch-screen, and steering wheel controls can be used to advance tracks. •Hard drive audio system – A 40gigabyte hard drive allows pausing and rewinding of live radio, as well as “ripping” tracks from CDs. The hard drive enables 60-minute “buffering” of the car’s radio, meaning that passengers can “pause” a live broadcast in order to take a phone call, or even leave the car to run an errand, or simply rewind to listen again.

•Navigation system – The navigation system includes 3D imaging of more than 800 major landmarks in 39 U.S. cities, voice recognition and real-time traffic and weather data. This available system uses an eight-inch diagonal, high-resolution full VGA infotainment display head with full touch-screen operation. The screen can retract into the instrument panel when not in use. •Adaptive forward lighting system – When equipped with the uplevel HID headlamps, the CTS also includes an advanced forward lighting system that automatically adjusts headlamp direction for improved nighttime driving visibility. The system is capable of turning the headlamps a maximum of 5 degrees inboard and 15 degrees outboard on each lamp. •Available Bluetooth connectivity – CTS is equipped from the factory for Bluetooth wireless connectivity of cell phones and other electronic data devices. It enables hands-free phone connectivity, W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

providing easier and safer calling and dialing. •Keyless Access and Smart Remote Start – The optional Keyless Access system enables passive vehicle and trunk entry and keyless ignition via a personalized keyless fob. With the fob in a pocket or purse, a person can approach a locked vehicle, pull the door handle and open the door or trunk. The optional Smart Remote Start system – which operates from as far as 200 feet – not only starts the vehicle via fob activation, but also activates the climate control and the optional heated and cooled seats, depending on temperatures outside and inside the car. •Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround™ audio system – Developed by Bose, this available sound system delivers concert-quality sound normally reserved for home theaters. The 300-watt, 10-speaker system incorporates the exclusive Bose Centerpoint technology, producing rich and spacious sound. Even the base audio system is a Bose unit, with an eight-speaker arrangement. •Ultrasonic park assist and more Other useful electronic systems on the '08 CTS include an available rear ultrasonic park assist, heated and ventilated front seats and power rake/telescoping steering column. Safety Features The 2009 CTS is designed to enhance Cadillac’s reputation for providing safe occupant environments in luxury vehicles. Details include: •Dual-stage driver front air bag •Segment-first dual depth front passenger air bag •Driver and front passenger side seatmounted pelvic/thorax side air bags •Roof-rail side curtain air bags, covezfront and rear seating rows •Front safety belt pretensioners •Tire pressure monitoring system •Body structure with strategically placed high-strength steel As with other Cadillac models, the 2009 CTS comes standard with OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factoryinstalled, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar. Turn-by-Turn allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers' vehicles through their OnStar system. These audio directions automatically play through the vehicle’s stereo as needed, triggered by the OnStar system’s GPS capabilities. This enables drivers to be led to their destination while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. *SAE certified

position lights and front fog lights integrated into the outer air intakes. BiXenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, including LED daytime running lights, are available on request. Follow the car’s clean lines along the side towards the rear, past the newly styled and enlarged exterior mirrors, where the impressive design continues. The styling is emphasised by the distinctly pronounced curves of the front and rear wings and the shape of the doors. Typically for a coupé, there is a gradual, flowing transition from the A-pillar to the rear. The sharper contour of the side skirts directs the air stream down to the side air intakes which are designed to facilitate considerable through-flow. The rear section of the side windows curves dynamically upwards. Extending beyond the side windows are two additional lines that direct attention towards the rear end. One of these lines continues to frame the large rear screen. The second line continues its rearward path to the LED taillight module. The elegant, extendable rear wing further reduces lift at the rear axle. Below, you cannot miss the visible hallmark of the characteristic Porsche sound: the stainless steel tailpipe – twin tailpipe on the Cayman S – integrated into the rear end. The unmistakable styling of the Cayman models is complemented by the new wheel design. The Cayman is fitted with 17-inch wheels as standard, the Cayman S with 18-inch wheels. A 19-inch option is available for both models. The result of all of these measures? A unique appearance and refined aerodynamics with a low drag coefficient of only 0.29. The Cayman models. Even more sophisticated, even more dynamic, and when it comes to style, they trust in only one direction: their own. SG

Diesel Performance Firestone Industrial Products Company Introduces New Work-RiteTM Suspension Solution

Firestone Industrial Products Company, LLC expands its product line with Work-RiteTM, an entry-level load management system featuring micro-cellular urethane load assist springs that install to the vehicle's frame and axle to augment the factory suspension. Work-Rite is designed to absorb road shock while remaining a maintenance-free suspension solution. When a vehicle is loaded, the Work-Rite kit helps to level the load and improve ride comfort. "Our Work-Rite customers experience all the benefits of Firestone's leading suspension technology - including increased vehicle stability, less vehicle sway, improved roll stability and reduced suspension fatigue - with no air pressure to monitor. Work-Rite is a fool-proof solution for constant-load or commercial applications," said Todd Green, regional sales manager, Firestone Industrial Products, Ride-RiteTM division. "The addition of Work-Rite to our product line rounds out our good-better-best offering, allowing us to remain our customers' leading source for load management solutions." Firestone's load assist springs are made of injection-molded, microcellular urethane and a base polymer developed specifically for the automotive environment. With six separate springgeometry and stiffness combinations, Work-Rite is not a one-sizefits-all solution. Most Work-Rite kits feature a no-drill design and can be adjusted by the end user for their specific loading scenario using spacers provided in the kit.

36

The kit includes load assist springs, brackets, comprehensive instructions and all necessary mounting hardware for an easy installation that requires basic hand tools and takes less than an hour. Work-Rite load assist springs do not increase the load-carrying capacity of the vehicle. Do not exceed the vehicle's recommended Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Trained technicians are available toll-free (800.888.0650) to answer any product application, installation or warranty questions Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST. Firestone offers Complete Suspension Solutions, which also include Ride-RiteTM, Sport-RiteTM, Coil-RiteTM and Level-RiteTM air helper spring systems. These products have become synonymous with quality, durability and outstanding customer support. For more information, visit www.ride-rite.com.

Summer

Fishing

Bluegills and Shellcrackers By Vernon Summerlin

The author catches bluegill in the summer using a small jig and working it deep.

W

hen bluegill and shellcracker, the two most popular bream, are through spawning and the water temperature begins rising into the 80s, they head for deep water. Deeper water is one thing - and there is a lot of it - but you’ve got to fish the cover on the deep-water points. Fish will 46

remain in these areas during the day, but they swim to the shallower areas to feed late in the day and may remain there until mid morning the next day. A study by the Alabama Department of Conservation established where bluegills go in the summer. They trapped bluegill in wire-mesh traps set at various depths from two to nine feet in a two-acre pond W W W. S P O R T S M A N S G E A R M A G . C O M

and from four to eight feet in a 22-acre pond. The traps were checked once or twice daily, but occasionally they were checked every two days. Water samples were collected from the various depths and analyzed for dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. The results: The depth the bluegills could live was five feet in the two-acre

Fishing pond and seven feet in the 22-acre pond during the summer stratification from June through September. They found the bluegill were unable to live in the deep water for more than six to 45 hours where the dissolved oxygen was low at 0.3 parts per million and a carbon dioxide concentration of 4.4 parts per million or more. The surface areas of the two-acre pond and the 22-acre pond made a difference in the deeper mixing of the waters due to wave action. The depth these fish could live increased in all ponds following strong winds, heavy rainfalls, or cool periods. And the depth bluegill could live decreased during periods of reduced photosynthesis due to extended periods of cloudiness. That will be important for those of you fishing ponds. In larger bodies of water, such as our reservoirs, a greater depth of oxygenated water is readily available. Run-of-the-river reservoirs don’t stratify in the summer but some of their tributaries may. Within this type reservoir are many points with long, gently slanting slopes that ease into deeper depths. On these points you may

find brush, trees, rock piles, weed beds, and other cover that attract bluegill and shellcracker. Sloping points are usually better habitat for these fish rather than vertical drops. So where are the big’uns? The first place to look is in the thermocline on tributary lakes. Any good sonar unit can pick up this cool layer of water. Look for where the thermocline hits a sloping point, and then look for cover on that point within the thermocline. Bingo! You should be on fish. Bass, crappie and other species like these conditions also, so the bait you present will help determine what you catch. Typically, you’ll fish deep and slow for ‘gills and ‘crackers in summer. You’ll need to use lures that will imitate small flies and nymphs. I suggest using ultralight spinning gear with four-pound line with a five-foot leader of two-pound test. To the bottom of the leader tie a 1/16- or 1/8-ounce jig with a short plastic grub or hook a worm or cricket on the jig. About 10 inches above the jig tie a drop line with a fly or nymph. Tie another drop line with a fly and nymph about 10 inches above that one. Lower your line to the

cover on the point in the thermocline, and Happy Hooking! SG

Ladies and kids alike love to catch these scrappy fighters – and they taste good too!

Shellcracker, or redear, have an arc of red along their gill flap. They get their nickname shellcracker from crushing snails with special crushers in their throats.

Boaters can rest assured that OceanLED’s purpose-built thru-hull lights are manufactured to the highest marine specifications using the most advanced materials. All OceanLED Pro-Series lights have received Lloyds Type Approval, RINA and ABS Certification, and meet U.S. Coast Guard Ignition Protection and ABYC H-27 Side Load Test standards and are all CE compliant. All Moose-Tracks Lead to your Backyard!

Compared to its equivalent HID bulb competitors, it delivers the same light output and even more over some models but with its versatile quick-fit installation, long LED life (50,000 operational hours versus 2,000 for HID) and inherent low power consumption, the OceanLED 3010 is an ideal choice for power cruisers, sportfishers and sailboats. For further versatility, the OceanLED 3010 operates on 12/24V DC or 110/240V AC input giving many more options over AC only HID models. Whether entertaining in port, relaxing at anchor, adding some “dazzle” to a midnight cruise or piercing the darkness to attract baitfish and big game offshore, this lighting system will outshine any boater’s expectations. The OceanLED 3010 delivers brilliant light that penetrates far below the surface — yet this system is engineered to “keep its cool.” With OceanLED’s strategic thru-hull design, the entire light engine is held on the outside of the vessel’s hull and maintains full contact with the water, providing unprecedented cooling. Unlike traditional bulb lights, all OceanLED thru-hull systems are factory sealed a major advantage in marine conditions. Replacing bulbs opens up the internal workings of bulb lights to cor rosion from the inside out, a major concern for any boater. Many companies recommend using copious amounts of grease to aid this issue, but it’s a stop gap — not a solution. Since they are built for life underwater, OceanLED lights provide reliable performance under the most challenging conditions, season after season. The OceanLED 3010’s 30mm profile head makes this light ideal for transom or hull installations. Because it requires

Babies Are So Cute! Dancin’ Tadpole

The new YUM Dancin’ Tadpole, the youngest member of the Dancin’ Eel family, measures just 2.75-inches in length and comes in six hot color patterns, including Foxy Shad, Rayburn Red and Rainbow Trout. This soft-plastic-crankbait combo provides incredible versatility. As a sinking lure, it can be worked at any depth, with a slow and steady retrieve that produces a side-to-side sashay or a stop-and-go retrieve that motivates inactive bass into action. The soft-plastic tail produces an incredible action that displaces a tremendous amount of water. The 2.75–inch Dancin’ Tadpole comes in six color patterns. For more information, visit www.lurenet.com.

Deeper Running Twitch Bait - XT3D

XCalibur’s Xt3 Twitch Bait is a fantastic lure when bass are up shallow, and the new Xt3D expands the bait’s effectiveness by essentially doubling the depth the lure will run. The Xt3D (the “D” stands for “deep”) runs 4- to 12-feet deep and retains that side-to-side movement on the twitch that makes the shallower running version such a fish-catching bait. The new deeper-running bait features the same ultrarealistic etched finish and gill plates that fool even the mostpressured fish. The ultra-sharp VMC inline treble hooks penetrate quick and hold fast. Inline hooks ride up against the belly of the bait on the retrieved, making the Xt3D extremely snag-proof. It also suspends in place when paused, driving bass crazy. The Xt3D comes in eight color patterns. For more information, visit www.lurenet.com.

A Bigger Pop For Zell - XZ3

Who’s the best topwater angler in the world? Zell Rowland, of course. He’s the man who made it cool. When we produced the Zell Pop, a lure Zell himself carved, it set a new standard for topwater chuggers and poppers, and now his evil fishing mind has created a larger version of the lure. Like its little brother, the XZ3 features etched scale finish, detailed gill plates and a shad spot behind the eye. The deep concave face pops and spits with the slightest twitch, and the 3-D red eyes taunt fish from above the waterline. The feather-dressed back treble adds to the fish-catching appeal. VMC inline treble hooks ride against the body on the retrieve. The 3–inch XZ3 comes in eight color patterns. For more information, visit www.lurenet.com.

Private Campgrounds along America’s Scenic Rivers are Gearing Up for a Busy Summer Season as Canoe, Kayak and River Tubing Enthusiasts Head to the Water Many campgrounds rent their own canoes, kayaks and inner tubes or work with local concessionaires that specialize in everything from river tubing to white water rafting. Many also offer pick up and drop off services.

A

s summer heats up, many families will be heading to America’s scenic rivers, which offer the full gamut of river rafting experiences, from gentle tube rides to thrilling white water rapids. And private campgrounds from Alaska to the Great Smoky Mountains will be waiting to welcome them with everything from inner tubes and river rafts to kayaks and canoes, which they can rent from the campground or obtain from a local concessionaire. Many campgrounds, in fact, have close working relationships with river rafting companies, which provide the equipment and transportation needed for virtually every kind of river trip. “It’s a major industry here,” said Barbara Johnson, co-owner of the Big Meadow Family Campground in Townsend, Tennessee, near Great Smoky Mountains National Park. “The ‘River Run’ usually starts in May and goes into September, depending on temperatures.” Families who stay at Big Meadow Family Campground typically spend the whole day floating down the Little River, which is still considered to be a wild river. “It’s a very gentle, mountain stream,” Johnson said. “You float over water that’s 3 to 18 feet deep.” Families looking for a little more adventure may consider staying at the Wilderness Cove Campground in Saluda, N.C., near the Green River. “The Green River offers six miles of Class I and II rapids for tubers and relaxing kayaking. But it also has about a four-mile run of Class II and III and a ‘steep creek’ section with Class IV and V rapids,” said Christy Houser, the campground’s owner. Of course, while many wild and scenic rivers are in remote areas of the coun52

try, it’s not too hard to find rivers within a short driving distance of major cities. Casini Family Ranch & River Bend, which borders California’s Russian River, is less than two hours from San Francisco, and offers a variety of tubing and kayaking experiences. “A lot of people will start kayaking or tubing six miles north of us in Guerneville and spend the day floating down to our campground,” said Jenny Summers, reservations manager for Casini Family Ranch. Others, she said, opt to simply float around the campground, which is built on a peninsula that sticks out into the river. In the Rocky Mountains, Denver area residents can easily take a two-and-a-halfhour drive to campgrounds like Snowy Peaks RV Park in Buena Vista, which is within a short drive of the Buena Vista W W W. Profaizer said demand for campgrounds near popular river rafting locations has gotten to the point where the association is redesigning its GoCampingAmerica. com web site with expanded search capabilities that will enable consumers to readily identify and book reservations at campgrounds and RV parks with river rafting and kayaking opportunities, as

LeaseTrader.com Reports Seven Percent Rise in Chrysler Lease Takeovers in 2009 Chrysler Fans Still Shopping For Model Favorites Are Finding Leases On LeaseTrader.com LeaseTrader.com, the nationwide online marketplace for car lease transfers, reports no drop off in Chrysler customers going through LeaseTrader.com’s car lease adoption program as a way to shop for a vehicle lease. If anything, the company sees rising interest in Chrysler vehicles. Chrysler has reported falling sales numbers since its decision to pull leasing programs. Conversely, Chrysler lease takeover activity through LeaseTrader.com has been up seven percent so far in 2009. The majority of LeaseTrader.com’s Chrysler takeover customers have indicated they remain loyal to the manufacturer’s vehicle lineup and prefer to continue leasing a vehicle because it is a better fit for their lifestyle compared to outright financing programs. Car shoppers are no longer able to lease vehicles through Chrysler dealers. “Our waiting list for Chrysler leases indicates that people have not fallen out of love with the brand, but they have fallen out of love with their options through the dealer,” said Sergio Stiberman, CEO and founder of LeaseTrader.com. “Our Chrysler customers are interested in taking over a vehicle lease through transfer because of the low prices and flexible lease terms they can’t find at their local dealer.” Chrysler fans can shop for a lease and customize their search by payment, months remaining, mileage and even by location. LeaseTrader.com’s car lease adoption program allows car shoppers to “adopt” a car from another lessee who no longer wants to drive the vehicle – mainly due to economic and financial reasons. The adoption program enables shoppers to pick up the remaining portion of the lease at a lower monthly payment if the first lessee is willing to pick up a portion of the remaining balance. LeaseTrader.com easily and affordably matches car shoppers with individuals looking to escape their auto lease. Privately held and founded in 1998, LeaseTrader.com is headquartered in Miami. Coleman Launches "Original Social Networking Site" Campaign From the Internet to cell phones, satellites to social networking sites, people embrace technology that allows them to stay 56

connected with the world and one another. But long before Facebook and iPhones were the norm, Coleman was – and continues to be – a fixture wherever people gather in the glow of crackling campfires, cook meals under open skies and fall asleep to the rustle of tent fabric and leaves. Coleman, with its products that enhance and enable the outdoor experience, just might argue that it created the first social networking site – a concept that serves as the theme for the company's multimedia advertising campaign that begins today. Much like Coleman's products address nearly every outdoor recreation need, the company's ambitious campaign reaches out to nearly every outlet used to communicate and receive information by today's society – merging the tradition of outdoor activities with technology in an intuitive and relevant fashion. Beginning with commercials running on some of television's highest-rated shows and ads running in the nation's most popular print and online publications, Coleman's campaign takes the "original social networking" message even further with online initiatives and collaboration with the blogosphere. Though Coleman may be responsible for the original social networking site, the company is also now a part of the Internet's largest incarnation: Facebook. There, Coleman's profile showcases original content, special offers and interactive elements for its fans and friends as well as information about free and easyto-download Coleman-specific apps for iPhones. As entertaining as they are practical, these apps provide outdoors enthusiasts a connection to their favorite pastime between trips. These apps include customizable Coleman lanterns and lights that turn iPhones into a hand-held light and a collection of fun and creepy campfire stories to entertain and initiate face-to-face communication when camping or at any other time. "Now, more than ever, people want to reconnect outdoors with friends and family," said Jeff Willard, Coleman's Senior Vice President for Global Marketing and New Product Development. "We help bring people together, whether it's with the traditional Coleman® lantern or on their iPhone." Hollywood actor Sam Elliott will narrate Coleman's newest series of television ads. Utilizing his iconic and easily recognizable delivery, Elliott speaks to all generations about the allure of time spent together having fun outdoors in campsites. See the new ads, hear the band Gomez as well as Elliott's voice-over and get additional information at www.coleman. com. Industry News go to Coleman's page on Facebook by entering "The Coleman Company" into the site's search engine. Becoming a "fan" is as simple as clicking a link; referring others is just as easy. Facebook fans, or official friends on the site, can browse the company's profile and get up-to-date information on exciting offers such as free apps, promotions and downloads; be the first to see new online-only features, sneak peeks of the newest television commercials and the latest must-have products to enhance the "original social networking site." "We know Coleman didn't really invent social networking," said Rob Strasberg, Chief Creative Officer for Doner Advertising, the agency behind this new campaign for Coleman and a host of other national brands. "But it's true that Coleman helps people get together, share experiences and do embarrassing things. Hey, wait a minute, maybe Coleman did invent social networking." The 109-year-old company's re-energized efforts to introduce and reacquaint society to the benefits of spending time outdoors are significant in their timeliness and relevance. With an increasingly wired population living in an era of expanded workloads, decreased personal time and other stress factors, the restorative and economic values of outdoor activities are sometimes overlooked. With a message that is fun, accessible and rooted in the knowledge that time spent outdoors can lead to happier lives and stronger bonds with family and friends, Coleman's new "original social networking site" campaign is a reminder that life should not be confined within four walls.

Team ReadyLift Racing’s Rob Naughton is the only Pro Driver in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series to remain undefeated in 2009! That’s not to say the racing has been easy. In addition to the HVP selenite polycarbonate lenses, every piece of eyewear in the Wiley X Climate Control Series features a patented, removable, durable and vented foam gasket that locks securely into lightweight ANSI-certified frames — far exceeding ANSI Z87.1 and ANSI Z80.3 safety and optical standards. The resulting Facial Cavity Seal™ effectively creates a climatically controlled insulate that protects the wearer’s eyes from elements such as wind, water, bugs, spray, precipitation and any airborne irritants — providing superior, clear vision while cruising the open water, and amplifying polarization to see more fish. “We’re thrilled to be recognized as aiding in the successes of our anglers on the Bassmaster Elite Series Tour,” says Wiley X, Inc.’s President of Sales, Myles Freeman, Jr. “It’s a testament to all of the hard work we put in to ensure we’re producing the highest quality products that meet the most demanding requirements, and are providing an edge on the water during competition.” The dominating performance by Skeet Reese at the Bassmaster Classic represents the caliber of athlete endorsing Wiley X Eyewear. In addition to Wiley X’s 2009 BASS Pro Team, the company has solidified endorsements on the Redfish Cup Tour, the nation’s elite two-man saltwater angling championship, and NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, including Matt Kenseth, winner of the prestigious Dayton a 500 and the first NASCAR racer since 1997 to take the checkered flag in the season’s first two races. Wiley X Eyewear is no stranger to withstanding the elements, as the company has been a leading provider of high performance protective eyewear for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines,

high-speed enthusiasts and anglers alike for over 22 years. Wiley X has set the benchmark for safety, style and utility, with all of its models meeting or exceeding ANSI Z87.1-2003 requirements for High Velocity Impact Standards. With credentials like these, it’s no wonder Wiley X Eyewear can be found wherever people push the limits of performance and endurance. Comfortable and stylish in addition to being extremely sturdy, Wiley X glasses are favored by anglers, boaters, NASCAR and NHRA drivers and fans, motorcycle riders, hunters, extreme sports enthusiasts and everyone in between. BoaterExam Alabama Launches Interactive Boater Education Course Alabama is the latest state to launch the new BoaterExam interactive boater education course as an online option to obtain the Alabama vessel operator’s license. Now, Alabama residents will have access to an animated and narrated course they can take online when it’s convenient for them. This boating education course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), recognized by the US Coast Guard and covers 100 percent of the state’s exam requirements. “We are extremely excited about this new course process,” said Kerry Moher, vice president, BoaterExam.com. “The study guide has more than 150 animations and practice quizzes that will better prepare students to successfully complete the final exam.” BoaterExam.com course participants learn about boat classifications, hull designs, motors, legal requirements for registration and equipment, navigation rules, basic safety regulations and waterway marking systems all in a narrative fashion with more than 300 original illustrations and 150 animated video clips. Each of the courses’ seven chapters is followed by chapter summaries and practice quizzes. Students also have access to BoaterExam. com’s industry exclusive toll-free customer service help line (1-866-764-2628) from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (central), seven days a week. All persons 12 years of age and older who operate a motorized vessel on Alabama waters are required to have their Alabama Vessel License (also referred to as the Alabama Boat Operator's Certificate or Alabama Boating License, which appears as a "V" class on your driver's license). The operator certification must be in possession at the time of operation. “Online education programs such as BoaterExam.com provide an opportunity for people to be trained and educated in boating safety techniques through an online study guide that is animated and narrated,” said Gail Kulp, Education Director - National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). The BoaterExam.com course and final exam is free: students pay a one-time fee of $29.95 only when they pass the final exam to obtain their official results. Once students pass the Boater Exam, a Course Completion Certificate is issued by the Alabama Marine Police within 1-2 weeks. Students then bring the resulting Certificate to their local Department of Public Safety, Driver’s License Examiner’s Office to have a boating license endorsement (“V” Class) placed on their driver’s license. Passing a boater education course may also result in a discount for boat or personal watercraft insurance. For complete Alabama boating regulations visit www.outdooralabama.com.
