Recently, I boarded a taxi at Taman Jaya 1,R.l' Station in Petaling .laya to get home. It was a 10-minute ride. I am usually very courteous and friendl) with taxi drivers, as I know they would have had a bad day fighting through trafiic. And 1 was my usual self with this driver. I gavc him directions to my home but he was rather quiet and did not want to speak. As we approached the road to my home I told him i t was another right turn but he stopped suddenly and asked me to get o f f as he claimed i t was difficult to rcverse which was not the case. She also had to handwash her clothes and undertake various responsibilities and follo\v a rcgi~ncntedschedule daily.

'I'he camp is about two hours' drive uphill from Kota Kinabalu and 1 was ovcrwhclmed by the picturesque villages, scenic hills and the pleasing view 01' Mount Kinabalu 011 the drivc up. Only a handful o f parcnts turned up to visit the 300 odd 3-5 trainees and participated with them in games and performances. Sornc trainees were cheerfill. several wcrc solemn and many were visibly missing thcir loved oncs and home. 'l'heir daily routine was to wake LIP at 5a.m. and they had to stay up until I I p.m. to coniplctc thcir activities and chores. M y daughter received a monthly allu\va~iceof' 30 RM 150 for participating in the National Scrvicc. Ilaily, the trainees ate .;is mcals. '1'0 my surprise. on thc day we were there, they were given packed rice with chicken. lricd fish and vcgctables and a bottle o f mineral water for lunch. A month later, my daughter no longer feared insects and had adapled bell lo the environment. She had fallen in love with the charming view of the 4,0951~1 Mounl Kinr~baluthat greeted her every morning. I was pleased with the transfi~rmatiunIny 40 daughter went through since she joined the National Service. She apprccialcd life more and coped with challenges and disappointments positively. Shc had even reached the summit of Mount Kinabalu which was a great achievement for her. Apart from thal, she had improved her self-development skills and showed love and care for others. Above all, she had grown up to be a brave and responsible teenager. Melizarani had developed 45 interexl in spirituality and looked forward to her Sundays because she got to travel out of the camp to perform prayers at a Hindu temple in Kota Kinabalu.
