Section C [25 marks] Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. In recent years, there has been a general awareness of the importance of trees. A series of discoveries pointed to the fact that it was trees that cleaned up atmospheric pollution and also helped to bring rain. At first, people took these discoveries lightly. But, a decade later people 1 realised that either we planted more trees or we would have a tough time in future. Then the whole world started numerous campaigns until the message finally got through: If you want it5to rain, then you plant trees or else ... 2 Trees are indeed useful to us. Humans and animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. On the other hand, trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This process helps to balance the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air. Factories throughout the world caused more problems for the trees. When they pollute the air 10 with too much carbon dioxide, the trees clean it up and return the oxygen to us. Then people started to be cruel to the trees. Throughout the world, they cut down more and more trees to make way for agriculture and development. Hence, industries kept on increasing. This meant that we were producing more carbon dioxide now because the trees which can neutralise the air, were getting 15 fewer and fewer. 3

Scientists warned us about the danger of cutting down the trees unnecessarily but few listened. In time, governments realised that they had to act responsibly and started to understand the importance of trees. Everyone feared the time when there would not be enough trees to maintain the delicate balance in the air. 20

4 Trees also play an important role in the water cycle. They are an important link in the process of evaporation. The sun absorbs the moisture from the ground, lakes, rivers and seas. Then the water vapour condenses and falls down as rain again. Here, the trees actually help to balance the water vapour in the air. This important ability could have created greater awareness of how important trees are to us. There was less rain 25 in many parts of the world. And people began to realise that if they wanted rain, they had to leave the trees alone. A simple solution to the problem was: If you destroy one tree, you have to plant twenty saplings in order to balance the water vapour in the air. 5

Almost two decades ago, Malaysia took tree-planting seriously. A nationwide campaign made people more aware of trees and their importance. Thousands of trees 30 were planted all over the country and green lungs were established. Acts were passed to protect trees. One such act was, if a person cut down a tree, he could be prosecuted and fined. This act applied even if the tree belonged to you.

6

One other way the government helped to save the trees was to make the first Sunday in November every year as the Tree Planting Day. On this day, thousands of trees 35 were planted throughout the country. Even politicians and community leaders took the lead in this tree-planting effort. At this time too, there was greater awareness of the usefulness of trees.

7

The public was also educated. In schools, students learnt about the importance of trees to the eco-system. Advertisements and information through the mass media too 40 helped spread the important message that trees helped man. For example, when trees are cleared, there are no roots to hold the soil firmly. This causes flooding. Besides that, insects, birds and animals lose their habitat. This could lead to an imbalance in the food chain.

8

We have to save the trees which are part of our natural heritage for future 4 5 generations. Every small effort to save them counts. It is not how much we do for the environment that is important but our attitude towards the environment that really matters. Questions 26 - 30

33 Read the extract from the short story The Sound Machine below and answer the questions that follow. Again it came – a throatless, inhuman shriek, sharp and short, very clear and cold. The note itself possessed a minor, metallic-quality that he had never heard before. Klausner looked around him, searching instinctively for the source of the noise. The woman next door was the only living thing in sight. He saw her reach down, take a rose stem in the fingers of one hand and snip the stem with a pair of scissors. Again he heard the scream. It came at the exact moment when the rose stem was cut. At this point, the woman straightened up, put the scissors in the basket with the roses and turned to walk away. "Mrs Saunders!" Klausner shouted, his voice shrill with excitement. "Oh! Mrs Saunders!" And looking round, the woman saw her neighbour standing on his lawn – a fantastic, arm-waving little person with a pair of earphones on his head – calling to her in a voice so high and loud that she became alarmed. a )
