If you should walk about in Kampung Sungai Mas, Kedah, after a downpour, do not be surprised if you come across colourful beads on the ground.

After all, more than 76,000 ancient beads have been found in the village located about 20 km from Sungai Petani, Kedah. In fact, 5 the villagers have been collecting these beads in the compounds of their homes for more than 20 years.

Among them is Harun Ismail, 63, who has collected enough beads to fill several jars. He still has a few jars of coloured beads which he has painstakingly soaked, polished and strung into 10 beadwork like bracelets and necklaces.

The other jars were handed over to the Sungai Mas Archaeology Museum located in the village about five years ago for a token sum of cash.

Between 1991 and 2000, extensive excavations were carried out 15 by the Museum and Antiquities Department’s archaeological division during which many beads were collected and studied.

These are ancient Indo-Pacific beads which were apparently left behind by an early civilisation in the area some 1500 years ago.

Discovery of ancient items including laterite and brick structures 20 from China, India and the Middle East proved that Kampung Sungai Mas used to be a port for international trade between the fifth and eleventh centuries.

The beads were used as barter items to exchange for goods and products by traders from the southeast coast of India who called 25 at the port in those days.

“We have been collecting the manik (beads) which could be found in everyone’s compound for years but we had no idea they are valuable ancient beads until they (the authorities) told us,” Harun 30 grinned. “The beads have been embedded in the ground for hundreds of years because of the colours, they can be easily spotted when they are exposed after the ground has been exposed by raindrops,” he said. Museum and Antiquities Department’s archaeology division 35 director Kamaruddin Zakaria said the little beads were similar to what were now known as “seed beads” sewn or woven on cloth or strung on strands.

“This small Indo-Pacific beads are found in various parts of the world from Ghana to China, Bali to Mali and South Africa to South 40 Korea. “For more than 2000 years, they were traded all over the globe and deserved the title of Champion Trade Beads,” said Kamaruddin whose field of study includes ancient beads.
