Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow. 1

Ballet has been proven to be a valuable conditioning technique for sports. Two years ago, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Trauma at Lennox Hospital in New York studied the effects of different sports activities on the body. They were then compared with ballet. The conclusion: ballet is more demanding than 5 football, basketball or even soccer.

2

Aware of the mind-body discipline of ballet, many western coaches and trainers are seeking out ballet teachers for their athletes. During the 1984 Olympics, American sprinter Carl Lewis reigned supreme with four gold medals. One sports commentator 10 remarked that part of Lewis’ training regime included ballet classes as it helped lengthen his strides to blast towards the finish line.

3

There are parallels between sports and ballet. For example, a basketball player cannot jump without doing a plie (knee bend). 15 Ankles and knees are also strengthened, providing agility in sports.

4

The ballet movement of rotating legs from the hips helps to strengthen smaller, more injury-susceptible muscles. Dancers become more aware of their pelvis positioning and have 20 increased range of motion in their hips.

5

6

Ballet technique emphasises verticality. The dancer’s body parts must be correctly centred and aligned to allow maximum stability and ease of movement. Ballet possesses many steps, including those that require the dancers, while in midair, to turn, beat their 25 legs or feet together, or change their leg position. Basically, it is more demanding than a regular aerobic workout. A Malaysian male ballet dancer, Jason Lim, sums it up, “ I literally have to drag myself out after a ballet class but I feel good.”

7

The fitness of ballet is enormous. Not only does it build lean 30 muscle, burn body fat and develop a flat stomach, the exercises also help to raise the resting metabolism rate. Furthermore, the release of the feel-good endorphin hormone does wonders to boost confidence.

8

Most ballet classes begin with exercises at the barre which the 35 dancer holds onto for support. These exercises warm up and stretch the muscles, work the tendons and loosen the joints. The second part of the class is done without the support of the barre and is called the centre practice. It usually begins with slow, sustained exercises (adagios) that develop the dancer’s sense of 40 balance and fluidity of movement. Slow exercises are followed by

1119/2

11

SULIT

1119/2

quick movements (allegros), beginning with small jumps and progressing to large travelling steps, turns, and leaps. 9

Ballet workouts are useful for both men and women as they strengthen and develop a complete range of muscles: from the 45 neck muscle and the shoulders to the upper back, lower back and thighs. In addition, they work the calf muscle and the bottom tissue.

10

According to www.calorie-counter.net, about 15 minutes of ballet can burn up to 85 calories. Over 12 months, this ballet workout 50 uses up a total of 31 025 calories per year or about 8.9 pounds of body fat. Now, is not getting fit and into shape much better than dieting and liposuctions?

There’s Been a Death in the Opposite House There’s been a death in the opposite house As lately as today. I know it by the numb look Such houses have always.

The minister goes stiffly in As if the house were his, And he owned all the mourners now, And little boys besides;

The neighbors rustle in and out, The doctor drives away. A window opens like a pod, Abrupt, mechanically;

And then the milliner, and the man Of the appalling trade, To take the measure of the house. There’ll be that dark parade

Somebody flings a mattress out,The children hurry by; They wonder if It died on that,I used to when a boy.

Of tassels and of coaches soon; It’s easy as a sign,The intuition of the news In just a country town. Emily Dickinson
