ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION Dear Guests, Small family-run hotels are a new feature of Croatian tourism. They encompas all the qualities of Croatian tourism with which you are already familiar, but they add qualities which have only become apparent in recent years. So, if it seems to you that this catalogue is something novel out of Croatia, you are not mistaken. Permit us to present a few of the reasons why small family-run hotels are a new chapter in the supply of our tourist opportunities. Undoubtedly, the most important one is the fact which tells us that a guest feels most comfortable in an environment which is close, intimate and family-like. In other words, where one’s individuality is recognized, where individual wishes and preferences are respected; where one’s host knows exactly how to make each and everyone feel welcome, accepted, respected and yes, content. The warmth of the personal touch is irreplaceable and small family-run hotels are the very form of tourism in Croatia which succeeds in embracing such warmth. Somebody once described them as small hotels with a large soul. To provide you with the opportunity of meeting the best that Croatia has to offer, each hotel presented in this catalogue is a genuine reflection of the tradition of the area in which it is located. With the intention of enabling you to get to know authentic, indigenous local values, every hotel tells its own very individual story. There are many ways to do this - through a style of architecture which reflects the clime in which the hotel is situated, its specific interior decoration, the aromas and flavours of the local cuisine, a wine list typical of the locality, excursion tours to landscapes found nowhere else, sport and recreational activities which, for certain locations in Croatia, were simply tailor-made. The colour of local life can best be experienced through encounters with the local people and, of course, with the hotel owner. In other words, the true spirit of the locality can be experienced in every hotel. And that is probably the common thread linking all the hotels presented in this catalogue, although each one is different from the other in so many ways. To select something different, something specific, to opt for something individual - that is what we would like you to bear in mind while browsing this catalogue.
We are confident that you will make the choice that is right for you.

ABOUT CROATIA All those who have come to Croatia down the ages left behind a little of themselves in their passing. This cannot be disputed, even by the fact that on their eventual departure they were unable to take away but a tiny piece of her within themselves. And if we were to say that this relates only to present-day guests, drawn by the desire for a pleasant holiday, it would be only a small part of the truth.
Croatia is a geographical region which has attracted peoples from time immemorial. On its soil, various cultures have come into contact, intertwined and even merged: Illyrians, Celts, Ancient Greeks and Romans. When they departed, this land became an intersection between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Then came the arrival of the Franks, who were followed by Byzantium. Here, ancient Slavic deities met face to face with those of the Illyrians, as did the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, as did Christianity and Islam. If we continue this story down to the present, we realise that Croatia has always been a world where other worlds meet. Worlds like the Roman, Hellenic, Germanic, Hungarian, Ottoman, Slavic... And throughout this time the Croats have always been, and remained, what they are: Croats. Indeed, contacts with other cultures only resulted in an enrichment of their own culture. This is why the history book of Croatia exudes a different aroma on every page. If a blend of differences and diversities serves to enrich, then Croatia is a treasure trove of inestimable wealth.
It would seem that Croatia’s fate was predestined by her geographic characteristics. Within its small area Croatia encompases the sunny Mediterranean, pre-Alpine mountains and the Pannonian Plains. And that is by no means all. Hidden within each of those larger regions are several of quite distinct areas. Did you know, for instance, that the Croatian word krš became a term accepted worldwide for a region where stone dominates? Or that Croatia is called “land of a thousand islands”? Did you know that Croatia is one of the countries of Europe most rich in water? This scale of diversity is best reflected in a natural heritage which comprises eight distinct national parks: Plitvice Lakes (designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO), Krka, Kornati, Brijuni, Mljet, Northern Velebit, Paklenica, and Risnjak. And then there are the Nature Parks of Kopački rit (wetlands), Medvednica Mountain, Lonjsko polje, Mount Velebit, the Biokovo Mountain, Telašćica, the Učka Mountain, Papuk, Vransko jezero (the Vrana lake), Žumberak - Samobor mountains and Lastovo archipelago.
The powerful, creative impulse issuing from the diversified interweave of the land is shown by the masterpieces created by the hand of man.
9
Many have experienced Croatia’s wealth of diversity through their palate, at table and savouring dishes the names of which are geographically defined: Pag cheese, Drniš prosciutto, Istrian soup, Cres lamb, Gorski kotar tripe, Kvarner scampi, Zagorje štrukli, Komiža sweet bread, Ston oysters, Međimurje pie... The tastes of all these dishes differ completely from the other, but their common link lies in their excellence and in the fact that they are purely Croatian. Wine connoisseurs may continue to add to this list by themselves.
ABOUT CROATIA UNESCO World Heritage List confirms the unique and universal values of the old city of Dubrovnik, Diocletian’s Palace in Split, St. Jacob’s Cathedral in Šibenik, the medieval core of the city of Trogir and the complex of the Basilica of St. Euphrasius in Poreč. Living surrounded by such pinnacles of creative efforts can only serve to further energise the creative drive, and it comes as no surprise to learn that this happened to many Croats. One such was Korčula-born Marco Polo, the legendary traveller who, in the 13th century revealed China to the Western world. In the 16th century Faust Vrančić of Šibenik invented the first modern-day parachute. Julije Klović of Grižane, near Novi Vinodolski, the greatest miniaturist in Europe, was known as the Michelangelo of miniatures. El Greco, his student, painted the image of his teacher together with Michelangelo, Rafael and Titian. In the 4th century, Marin, a master stone carver from Rab, founded the city-state of San Marino. Nikola Tesla from the village of Smiljani in the region of Lika is an inventor without whose contributions to the fields of electrical engineering and radiophony, and many other areas, modern-day civilization would be difficult to envisage. Ivana Brlić Mažuranić of Slavonski Brod, a writer of children’s stories at the beginning of the 20th century, has with good reason been called the Croatian Andersen. In the 19th century, David Schwartz of Zagreb invented an airship but he was to die before he could patent it. His designs were procured by Graf von Zeppelin, who used them to construct his famous zeppelins. Slavoljub Penkala, also of Zagreb, bequeathed to the world his technical pencil, fountain pen, detergent, and almost 80 other patented inventions. In the same century Giovanni Luppis of Rijeka invented the torpedo, and the first torpedo factory in the world was built in his hometown.
Croatia, this world that is a meeting place of worlds, welcomes all good-hearted people with open arms.
11
So the story continues, but we have to draw a line somewhere. Let the final lines be dedicated to those who are consulting their calendars with a degree of impatience, longing for vacation time to arrive as soon as possible. When they arrive in Croatia, they will find themselves in a land where the first European calendar was discovered. It was drawn on a ceramic vessel found in the locality of Vučedol, near Vukovar, dating from 3000-2400 BC, the period when Mesopotamia began to use cuneiform writing, and when hieroglyphs first appeared in Egypt.
GASTRONOMIC OFFER Croatia is where a traditional approach to food is nurtured and cherished, which means that it respects the authenticity of its own cuisine. Or, to be more precise, its cuisines, since throughout its history this land been a vibrant meeting point of different cultures, and consequently of different gastronomic customs.
In the continental part of the country those favouring delicacies of a more substantial nature, such as Slavonian kulen, Zagorje roast turkey with mlinci, the fish-paprikash of Baranja, Lika-style baked potato halves, Gorski kotar-style tripe, or a wide variety of game dishes, will be well satisfied. Mediterranean Croatia is a realm of light cuisine based on olive oil, the scampi of Kvarner, oysters from Ston, Dalmatian fish, shellfish and crabs, frog legs and truffles, the sweetbreads of Komiža and Vis, spiced with lamb from Cres and Pag, prosciutto of Drniš... The oenological tradition of Croatia is best illustrated by the old cellars of Ilok, where the first wine in Europe was
bottled. All a guest has to do is to discover the magic of wines like Traminac, Riesling, Graševina, and Burgundy; if seaside bound, there are other equally delightful wines: Dingač, Postup, Teran, Malmsey, Vugava... Those with a sweet tooth will not feel shortchanged; the choice is quite literally mind boggling - from Međimurje nine-layer pie, walnut roll, and Zagorje štrukli (cheesefilled dough, boiled or baked) in the continental parts of the country, to the gateaux of Rab, baškotin in Pag, Frankopan gateau in the littoral, Dalmatian rožata – or as some would say, crème caramel.
In short, wherever the connoisseur of good food and wine may find himself or
13
herself in Croatia.
ACTIVE HOLIDAY The geographical variety found in Croatia offers excellent starting points for an equally wide variety of attractions for an active stay. There are practically no programme or time limitations, except, of course, for those set by choice by the guests themselves.
The Mediterranean part of the country, where one can engage in attractive water sports and other forms of recreation linked with the sea, is the right place for those whose adrenalin flows faster when mention is made of sailing, diving, swimming, surfing, water skiing, fishing for the larger fish, and similar activities. If water is not your thing, only a few steps from the coast you can explore cycling and hiking routes; or go mountaineering, mountain biking, rafting down the karstic and mountain rivers, canoeing, kayaking, paragliding, speleology, etc. Croatia’s hunting grounds have long been well known beyond her borders, whether they are situated in the plains, the mountains or on the islands. All those who love to hunt deer, pheasant, wild boar, moufflon, bear, wild goose or duck can find many opportunities to demonstrate their skills.
Winter tourism in Croatia is also slowly but surely gathering pace. The ski run on the Medvednica Mountain rising above Zagreb, popularly known as Sljeme, has been brought up to world standards, while all the best known ski resorts in the country are located not far from the sea. Tennis tournaments, excursions into nature, river and lake fishing, underwater fishing, riding, photo safaris in any one of the nature parks or national parks, are all events that leave lasting memories.
In Croatia, the sporting and recreational heart beats stronger, bringing health and creating a feeling of
15
intense satisfaction.
ISTRIA Many years ago a delighted traveller described Istria as a fairyland. He could not imagine that his impression of the largest peninsula in the Adriatic would remain its most accurate description to this day. Indeed, whichever direction you take, Istria will reveal itself as a land of fairytale magic, a magic that could have been created in no other way but during those moments when mischievous fairies desired nothing more than to outdo one another in the weaving of spells.
It was they who left imprints of the footprints of dinosaurs in the stones of the Savudrija coast, as though they wanted to present us with a tantalising pointer to an Age far beyond the compass of humankind’s collective unconscious. Rising on sheltered elevations are circular hill forts built by the Illyrian tribe of Histri, whose name still lives on, thousands of years later, in the name of the peninsula. The conquering Romans chose not to change the name either. And why should they? They seemed to think it more expedient to enjoy themselves in their holiday villas, savouring scampi and the intoxicating gifts yielded by the vineyards, or to spend time in Pula’s amphitheatre, where the battle-hardened hearts of centurions found satisfaction watching gladiatorial contests. What could the bishops from the early Christian Basilica of St. Euphrasius do about it? Nothing at all. Just like the sailors who, centuries later, set sail from Pula, the Austro-Hungarian main naval port, to engage in new battles for supremacy. Spreading between the Mediterranean beaches and the Učka mountain, standing like a massive, brooding sentinel above the peninsula, is the Istrian interior. And there, perched on the peaks of the hilly landscape, tiny medieval towns – a fairytale within the wider Istrian fairytale. In one such town, Motovun - possibly the most beautiful of all - there resides a giant they call Veli Jože. If there is anybody who has not yet seen him, it is only because they have not visited the Motovun Woods, where the giant searches for truffles. While on the subject of truffles, it was here, close to the village of Livade, that the world’s largest truffle was found in 2000,
weighing 1.3 kg. Another of the towns, Hum, is the smallest in the world; Grožnjan is an oasis for artists, and in Pazin, nestling beneath a castle, is a massive cave from which somebody, who knows who, whispered to Jules Verne that he might consider journeying to the centre of the Earth. The peninsula’s meadowlands are ideal grazing land for the indigenous species of Istrian cattle known as boškarin. Folklore is characterized by the extraordinary tones of the Istrian scale. Tiny medieval churches still preserve the secret of the old Glagolitic script. In Barban, lancers compete in a race for rings (trka na prstenac), fortifying their spirits with Istrian prosciutto and malmsey. Those of different tastes may opt for oysters from the Lim Channel, or for Istrian supa (a bracing combination of red wine, olive oil, pepper, sugar and warm slices of fried bread), and fuži sa žgvacetom (home-made pasta with meat sautéed in piquant sauce, served in the local pubs) accompanied by Teran and Prosecco from the wine cellar. And all that would go down very nicely after a journey of discovery along one of the cycling routes, or following an excursion to the Brijuni National Park.
Istria is a true

Hotel VILLA HOLIDAY
From the times of the Liburnian tribe of Histri and the Roman conquerors in the times of Antiquity to this day Poreč never ceised to amaze with its impressive history. The 6th century complex of the Euphrasius's basilica, a magnificent Byzantine style monument, bears a very convinsing witness to that. Some of the most beautiful buildings in the town originate from the period of the Venetian rule.

KVARNER Those who cannot make up their minds whether to seek relaxation on the warm pebbles of a beach, or in the cool mountain peaks; whether to stay in an aristocratic villa or in a rural atmosphere; whether to abandon themselves to the adrenalin-charged ferment of Mediterranean volatility, or to the healing influence of the silent ambience of a forest – for those, Kvarner is the ideal destination. Kvarner is all of that rolled into one. Kvarner makes everything possible since it combines three quite specific wonders: the wonders of the littoral, the islands and the mountains.
The littoral consists of a string of beautiful rivieras: Opatija, Crikvenica, Novi Vinodolski, and the area of Rijeka. Following one after another are locations originally designed for the pleasure of their aristocratic guests, while reflecting the way of life of the common folk. The faces of the first are dominated by elegant villas and parks that bring a breath of Mitteleuropa to the Mediterranean: Opatija - the birthplace of Croatian tourism, followed closely by Lovran, Crikvenica and Mali Lošinj. Places like Volosko, Mošćenice, Mošćenička Draga, Kastav, Brseč or Jadranovo show that it is also possible for life to develop around old fishing villages. For sailors, the islands, those “blue gates to the Adriatic”, are little worlds in themselves. On the islands of Cres and Lošinj the village of Lubenice takes one’s breath away; Osor takes us back to the times of antiquity; Lošinj is the home of old and seasoned sailors; Valun a hidden fishing oasis. The island of Krk fascinates with its rich history, telling us stories of the feudal lords of Frankopan and of Glagolitic
traditions. It was there that the Baška Tablet (Bašćanska ploča) dating from AD 1100, this “Baptismal Certificate of the Croats” was discovered. The Romans described Rab as a happy island, and today its visitors do the same. Nature has bestowed stone, sea and sheep to Pag and the human hand has provided it with cheese, lamb and lace. The mountainous region of Gorski Kotar is ruled by silence and clean, unpolluted air, inviting us to visit the source of the River Kupa, or to kayak down the Kupa and Dobra. It draws us to the mountain peaks, from where the view extends all the way to the sea and the Alps, or to attempt to unravel the underground secrets of caves like Lokvarka, Vrela, and others. It offers us all the excitement inherent in the nature parks of Bijele and Samarske Stijene, Vražji Prolaz, and the Risnjak National Park.
In short, Kvarner is a tempting seductress offering a blend of impossible to imagine.

Dalmatia ZADAR Arriving in Zadar by boat, we are heading directly for an encounter with George Bernard Shaw. No, he did not settle in this part of the Mediterranean, although by all accounts he undoubtedly would have liked to. The famous writer once wrote: “God wished to round off His work. And so, on the final day, from tears, stars and the breath of the sea, He created the Kornati.” Needless to say, one does not have to be a G.B.S. for this archipelago to make such an impact upon the soul.
The Kornati archipelago, the most numerous (140) group of islands, isles and reefs in the Mediterranean, enchants with a beauty that can be compared only to lacework in stone strewn across the gently undulating blue surface of the water. Today, the Kornati is a national park, an azure nautical forecourt to the Zadar mainland. Zadar, a town of ancient roots, is some 3000 years old – which in itself has the status of a cultural event. Roman remains are complemented by numerous examples of sacral architecture: the 9th-century church of St. Donatus, the Cathedral of St. Anastasia (which rose on the foundations an Early Christian basilica), the Church of St. Mary (the guardian of the cultural heritage known as the “Gold and Silver of Zadar and Nin”, the Church of St. Francis (the oldest Gothic monument in Dalmatia), and the Church of St. Simon (which shelters a casket containing the saint’s silver sarcophagus, weighing 250 kg). Comparable to Zadar and its historical patina, is the nearby town of Nin. In the days of antiquity, Nin was the centre of the Illyrian Liburni, after which it became the seat of Croatian bishops and the residence of Croatian monarchs. It is from those times that the stone baptismal font with an inscription mentioning Prince Višeslav dates. Knin, located in the Zadar hinterland, and dominated by the largest fortress in Dalmatia, was also once the seat of Croatia’s nobility.
The surrounding area is just as impressive for its beautiful landscapes. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is a rhapsodic experience in stone and of stone, a dreamland for an active holiday, for treks through deep passes and ravines, for mountaineering and free-style climbing, possible on Anića kuk – the most popular Alpinist destination in Croatia. And why not follow this by rafting, kayaking through a canyon and canoeing on the Rivers Zrmanja and Krupa, or take a tour of the Lake Vrana – a protected realm of rare birds. Those who decide to go down to the sea again will not be making a mistake either. The southern part of the island of Pag is a delicacy for all the senses – with all the flavours of the local cuisine, the fragrance of sage and the vistas of the medieval town of Pag. Ideal for Mediterranean-style relaxation are the islands of Ugljan, Pašman, Silba, Olib, Iž, Premuda, Molat, and Dugi otok. There, visitors may choose from among the submarine world and sheltered coves, olive groves, cellars, fishing fiestas, donkeys, lavender, cycling routes...
Zadar has all the allure of a siren – its call is irresistible and holds open a promise of 59
excitement.

Dalmatia ŠIBENIK How can one resist the attractive power of this region, in whose centre lies the architectural wealth that prompted UNESCO to state: “Yes, this is truly a treasure which must be appear on the World Heritage. List” And within which two national parks compete for their sheer beauty! The answer is quite simple: one should not even try, for it would be wasted effort.
If the Master builders Juraj Dalmatinac (also known as Georgius Dalmaticus) and Nikola Firentinac (who came from Florence) were still alive, they would undoubtedly be able to reveal the secret of their masterpiece in the medieval heart of Šibenik, the secret of the Cathedral of St. Jacob. This magnum opus has been delighting passers-by ever since it was built in the 15th and 16th century, jealously protecting the riddle of the stone slab construction of its arched roof, and preserving the artistic enigmas of its Gothic Baptistery and the series of Renaissance portrait heads on the cathedral’s external frieze. This architectural wealth is watched over by the fortresses of St. Michael, St. John and Šubićevac from which the defenders of long ago kept guard over the city and the mouth of the River Krka. The sea in front of Šibenik was protected by the fortress of St. Nicholas. Those who are heading inland, into the area of Prukljansko jezero (Prukljan Lake) and onward through the deep river canyon, have already embarked upon an exciting adventure, known as the Krka National Park. The park is reached by following one of the most wondrous rivers of the Croatian krš, or karst. Rushing on its journey towards the sea the River Krka forms numerous lakes and meres, waterfalls and rapids, and once witnessed, they remain in one’s memory for ever. How else could it be, bearing in mind the splendour of the Roški slap and Skradinski buk waterfalls, the islet of Visovac on which a hushed and tranquil Franciscan monastery has for centuries served to combine man, water and sky in a harmony of peace. And if
one also decides to visit the Ivan Meštrović mausoleum in Otavice, and then seeks nourishment in local dishes prepared under a peka (domed ceramic or iron cover placed over food laid on a stone slab, and covered with live coals), well... Awaiting guests returning to the sea are locations such as Vodice, Rogoznica, Primošten, Pirovac, Tisno, Murter, Betina, Tribunj, Jezera and other coastal and island towns and villages, as well as more than 350 isles and reefs. With their pebble beaches, pine woods, ancient vineyards and olive groves; with klapas (singing groups), fishermen’s fiestas and donkey races, Babić – a delectable red wine, the coral hunters of Zlarin, sponge hunters of Krapanj... And what about the Kornati? This national park comprising the most numerous and the most richly indented archipelago of the Mediterranean is an encounter with a fascinating game played by sea and stone. Were there any rules for the vivacity of the natural elements? If there were, the Creator did not devise them in order to impose any restrictions. And He was right, again.
A first encounter with the Šibenik region makes one sigh with regret: “My God, why didn’t I come here 73
earlier?”

Brodarica is a village on the island of Krapanj, the lowest-lying and the smallest inhabited island in the Adriatic. The area of the island is no more than a ½ km2; it highest altitude is 1.25 metres, and its distance from the mainland is a mere 400 metres. In the 1960s Krapanj was the most densely populated of all the islands, and its tiny arable area was criss-crossed by drystone walls into plots the size of small gardens, this being in no way sufficient to ensure a sustainable livelihood. And so the islanders turned towards other sources, i.e. the sea. For centuries they have been fishermen and sponge-harvesters. Krapanj is a quiet and peaceful island, no cars drive through it, and its pebbly beaches are particularly suited to children.

Dalmatia SPLIT Having been an advocate all his life of the maxim that “all roads lead to Rome”, Emperor Diocletian came to realize that this need not be the only essential truth. In an important moment of his life all his personal roads were to lead to what, in the distant future, was to become the city of Split. In the 3rd century AD the emperor decided to retire from the world of politics and to spend the remaining years of his life in a cove close to the Illyrian/Greek settlement of Asphalatos, “Oh, yes; this is where I am going to build myself a palace,” he is said to have murmured into his beard. And gave the appropriate commands.
He could never have dreamed that his actions would be the kernel of a future town. Initially, it grew within the boundaries of the Palace where its latter-day inhabitants had no compunction in adding to what they had inherited (one example being the Cathedral of St. Domnius), thus creating an amazing architectural amalgam. Together with Diocletian’s Palace and nearby Roman Salona, the Split of our times combines the tranquillity of antiquity and the energetic, sometimes frenetic, rhythm of the 21st century. It could be that very rhythm which, according to its temperamental inhabitants, makes Split “the most sports conscious town in the world.“ The historical heart of the city has its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as does the centre of the nearby Trogir Riviera. Trogir’s ancient roots were built on throughout later periods, the result being its medieval heart, where Gothic- and Renaissance-style buildings are crowned by an even more precious jewel: the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Lawrence, its magnificent portal bearing the signature of Master Carver Radovan. The Kaštela Riviera comprises a picturesque string of villages that grew around seven coastal fortifications, supported from the hinterland by the old town of Klis and its formidable fortress. Dalmatinska zagora, the region extending beyond the mountains of the Littoral, with the Imotski lakes and the craggy landscape of the Biokovo Nature Park, and the mellow valley of the River Cetina which, in its approach to the sea - and Omiš - flows through an impressive 50 km canyon - are all a feast for the eye, and a blessing for all lovers of active holidaying: riding, rafting, canyoning and mountaineering. The
Omiš Riviera is a wonderful landscape where mountains, sea and river come together. The Makarska Riviera comprises a number of smaller sites strung along the coast at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain. Shaded by pines and cypresses there are as many as 60 km of pebble beaches offered by this Riviera.
The name of Split is also translated in the following ways: a princely holiday, Mediterranean passion, Dionysian relaxation.
83
The island of Brač is the largest of all the Dalmatian islands. Anyone who has once walked the Zlatni rat beach does not need to be told that it is one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the Mediterranean. Having soaked up as much rest as necessary, one can then enjoy the Bol Tennis Tournament. The island of Vis is an oasis of virgin nature, with phenomena like the Blue, Green and Bear’s Caves awaiting. Here, grapevines and tropical fruit have been growing since antiquity, from which period remain rich archaeological sites. The island of Hvar is truly Dionysian; bathed in sunshine, submerged in a fragrance of lavender and with its oh, so very good wines! And all of this spiced by the Days of Hvar Theatre, the Omiš Festival of Dalmatian Klapas, the Sinjska alka, Days of Marulo (celebrating Marko Marulić, the 15/16th century writer from Split).

Hotel TRAGOS
Trogir is a city whose happy moment has endured for 2300 years. The ancient Greek deity, Kairos - god of the happy moment - whose relief was discovered here by archaeologists, could never have imagined that it would last so long. And, happily, no end to this is in sight. The story of a city that captivates with its beauty began in the times of ancient Tragos, through Roman Tragurium and right up to the Trogir of our days. It does not take much to convince any one of this: we only have to cast an eye over the portal carved by Master Radovan, the Kamerlengo Fortress, or the medieval city gates.

Split is a city which enchants with the relaxed rhythm of its life combined with its lively Mediterranean temperament. An unusual combination it may be, but visitors take to it very quickly. It is easy to feel at home here, particularly since the squares, restaurants and coffee shops teeming with people make every day seem like a holiday. This feeling is further strengthened if one looks at the waterfront promenade which, in the summer, is blessed by the refreshing maestral (landward breeze) while in the winter it is shielded from cold winds by Diocletian’s Palace and warmed by the Mediterranean sun.

Omiš has chosen a marvelous place for itself. It is situated in touch both with impressive mountains and the azure sea, at the place where the swift-flowing Cetina River empties into the relaxed Adriatic, and at the point where the continental aromas carried by Cetina and the healing spray from the sea combine together. It is this mixture of sea and river, blue and green, wild and tame that makes Omiš a place that draws our attention right from the beginning. Guests who have experienced this special quality, which grew out of the mixture of that which is seemingly impossible to combine, always come back to Omiš.

Dalmatia DUBROVNIK When he wrote that the second most beautiful place in the world was Dubrovnik, the first being that in which we were born, the poet could never have imagined the number of people who would agree with him. Indeed, Dubrovnik still enchants as much as it did Cvijeta Zuzorić with its elegant Renaissance beauty. And for her, verses were written; for her, they sailed the seas...
The face of Dubrovnik is caressed by the sun for 2554 hours a year, a fact that few places in Europe equal. This is the face of a monument-town, one of those favoured by having its place in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Why it figures in that list is a question that only those who have never visited the city would ask. The redoubtable defensive walls of the one-time city-state were witnesses to the mighty merchant fleet with which Dubrovnik competed with Venice. At its zenith in the 15th and 16th centuries, the Republic of Dubrovnik became a treasury of architectural, diplomatic, scientific, literary, and many other skills. Strolling on the stones of the central street - Stradun – the visitor will walk where the physicist Ruđer Bošković, playwright Marin Držić, poet Ivan Gundulić, and physicist Martin Getaldić once walked. After just a few paces, he will arrive at the Onofrio Fountain and Orlando’s Column, the bell tower with its famous clock figures, popularly known as zelenci (the green ones), the Dominican monastery, the Rector’s Palace, and the fortresses of Lovrjenac, Bokar, Revelin and Minčeta.
Coming face to face with Dubrovnik is like an encounter with a beautiful woman: the eye appreciates her attributes at first glance.
119
Dubrovnik is set amidst Mediterranean nature of unrivalled beauty. And not only the city. With its indigenous rural atmosphere the area of Konavle seems to be a complete contrast to Dubrovnik, but it is actually a continuation – a fact particularly visible in ethnographic heritage. Župa dubrovačka enchants with its beaches. The wide delta of the River Neretva is home to rich ornithological and ichthyological reserves. Located on the Pelješac peninsula are the small towns of Ston and Mali Ston, where extensive walls still protect the oldest salt works in Europe, dating from 4000 years ago. The bay of Mali Ston is a paradise for connoisseurs of shellfish and other sea food. It is no different on the slopes of Dingač and Postup, where fantastic wines of the same names are produced. The island of Korčula delights visitors with its ancient Moreška sword dance, and its tribute to Korčula-born Marco Polo. The island of Mljet is a national park, and nearby is the island of Lastovo and the Elafiti Islands. And everywhere, but everywhere, are small, sheltered, enchanting beaches.

LIKA KARLOVAC Those who visit the Lika-Karlovac region once will assure themselves of the validity the thesis whereby a part of this area was named after the Celtic word likis which means „beautiful land“. We haste to add that the attribute of „beautiful land“ is by no means restricted to this particular part of the region, but can justifiably be applied to the entire area.
Though Lika is hidden from the sea by Velebit, the largest of the Croatian mountains, there is no reason why it should remain hidden from the eyes of the today's visitors to Croatia, particularly if one bears in mind that this is indeed virgin nature. The valley of the Gacka river is an area of fairy tale atmosphere, with crystal clear waters, ancient mills and an abundance of very special trout. Lika has two national parks. The first are the Plitvice Lakes with 16 cascading which have been included into the UNESCO list of planetary natural heritage, and the second is Northern Velebit with its wealth of protected and endemic biological species and a breath taking views of the Adriatic, including the island of Pag. Lika is the area of wholesome food, strong people, of the well preserved traditional way of life and real, age-old values. One of the crown jewels of the area is the medieval Nehaj fortress, the symbol of both the town of Senj that grew on the coast of the Adriatic, and the entire Croatian struggle for freedom on land and sea. The northern part of the island of Pag attracts and holds one's interest by its specific landscape which can be perceived as the return to the fundamental elements of nature - the sea, the stone and the sun. Many remember it for its beach in Novalja, the delicacies of its cuisine - fisr and foremost the Pag cheese and lamb.
To put it in a nut shell, the Lika-Karlovac region is the living proof that sometimes fairy tales should be sought in the real life.
131
The landscapes of the Karlovac area are characterized mainly by their transitional nature between the low laying parts and Croatia and its mountainous area. The town of Karlovac was born out of star-shaped Renaissance fortress, and is today full of parks and promenades beneath the avenue centuries old chestnut trees. In the environes of the town people seek active rest and recreation on the banks of the four rivers - Korana, Kupa, Dobra and Mrežnica - and that translates into swimming, rowing, angling, canoeing and kayaking. Others enjoy the blessings offered by the combination of rural landscape and rich cultural, predominantly ethno-heritage. And that ethno-heritage is what guests find attractive is testified by the town of Ogulin. The costumed manifestation known as Withces of Klek tells us of the values of popular local tradition, while the Ogulin Festival of Fairy tales celebrates the work of Ivana Brlić Mažuranić, described as the Croatian Andersen, as well as legends and fairy tales of the area and wider.

Ogulin is first mentioned in the year 1500 when the site was occupied by the fortification of the Frankopans, one of the two most powerful feudal families of Croatia. The fortification has not disappeared in its entirety, as testified by the Frankopan tower which today houses the Regional Museum. ZAGREB He who described Zagreb as the ideal town of the 19th century had no intention of passing over Zagreb’s intriguing past, nor all the good things that happened to Zagreb, or that which began to adorn it in the following century. He simply wished to remind us of the city’s impressive individuality, and of its attractions of the present-day.
Needless to say, Zagreb did exist before the 19th century. Its beginnings can be discerned in two small medieval towns: secular Gradec, populated by tradesmen and artisans, and the bishop’s town of Kaptol. Today, people walking through the city’s streets know them as the Upper Town - where familiar sites are the Lotršćak Tower, St. Mark’s church, and the Croatian Sabor (parliament) building - and Kaptol, dominated by Zagreb’s neo-Gothic Cathedral which, in the 13th century, was the easternmost edifice of its kind in Europe. In the 19th century, in the area beneath them, new town - or Downtown - was built according to a quite specific plan. At a time when people were attempting to unravel the tangled knot of traffic, industry and the accompanying pollution of residential areas, Zagreb managed to achieve a well balanced ratio of architectural structures and green areas. Residential blocks and the street grid are framed by a string of parks, making up two so-called “green horse-shoes”, quite unique in the world. Integrated into that green, horse-shoe landscape are the Croatian National Theatre, the Art Pavilion, the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the University Library and other buildings of social and architectural significance. And to crown them all from the hilly elevation above the city is
Mirogoj, the city cemetery, with its Renaissance-style arcade surmounted by bronze cupolas, and a wealth of greenery to match any English park. In the 20th century the city expanded, crossing the River Sava. A new Zagreb grew there. Despite that, or perhaps specifically because of it, the city continued to breath an urban atmosphere. It continues to do so today. Numerous theatres, museums, galleries, concert halls, exhibition premises, sports and recreational grounds, restaurants, wine boutiques and beer halls – all offer almost countless reasons for a visit. Possibly with the intention of learning more about the rich historical, artistic, ethnographic or gastronomic heritage of Croatia. Possibly simply to see and to be seen. Or possibly merely aiming to have a good time... When you are in the right place, at the right time, any reason can be the right one.
Today, Zagreb is the cultural, political, economic and communication centre of the Republic of Croatia.

CENTRAL CROATIA The central Croatia may indeed be a typical continental area, but its beauty is in many ways anything but typical. A look at the mellow, undulating landscapes, flower covered meadows and clearings and silent, meandering rivers will inspire the guest to seek an escape from the agressive „blessings“ of technical civilizations here, amidst the preserved nature. And all who decide to go looking for such an experience in central Croatia will have done the right thing.
Needless to say, they will be just as right if they come looking for her other face. Among the best examples for that is the landscape which opens up before our eyes if we happen to find ourselves in Hrvatsko zagorje. The medieval and Renaissance fortifications, Baroque castles and manor houses are not just a source of countless legends and folk stories. The mysteries of their history blend with their visual attraction, though for the most part that attraction is quite current since a large number of those sites have only recently been renovated and open to guests. Veliki Tabor, the magnificent 16th century Renaissance fortress-cum-castle, seems to be still alive with the clash of swards wielded by armoured knights on horseback. And although the enchantingly romantic atmosphere of the Trakošćan castle rising on a small hill above a lake located in a park sets it appart from all others, they are just as attractive in their own ways - the Renaissance fortress of Varaždin, the castles of Picok in Đurđevac, Oršić in Stubica, Zajezda near Zlatar, Maruševec, Miljana and Bistra... The spirit of time gone by can be also felt in the Old Town of Čakovec, in the Baroque Old Burg of Varaždin, in Sisak the roots of which reach all the way to the times of Antiquity, or rather the Roman period. The preserved fortress of Sisak reminds the visitor of today of the times when it stood as a defence agains the Turkish onslaught against western Europe. And on a different note, those fond of active holiday will find that the entire

area offers countless and varied opportunities. If, having walked through the burgs and fortifications, or followed the trail of historical battles, some may begin to wonder about their own health, there is no need to worry. The numerous spas in the area cater for such needs. Tuheljske toplice, Sveti Martin, Stubičke toplice, Krapinske toplice and Varaždinske toplice indicate by their very names a long standing tradition in health tourism, and it is a known fact that such a tradition is built on things that are good. Whoever it was who said that good health is inevitably accompanied by interest in natural and cultural treasures, was telling the truth. In central Croatia such attractions are not in short supply. That this is indeed so is born out by, among other places, the Lonja Range Nature Park, the Kumrovec ethno-village, numerous castles and manor houses, nature parks and the phenomenon known as the naive art of Podravina which was made famous throughout the world by authors like Krsto Hegedušić, Ivan Generalić, Ivan Rabuzin, Ivan Lacković Croata. Marija Bistrica, the home to the main Marianic shrine in Croatia, is also in this part of the country.

Sisak owes part of its charm to three rivers, the Kupa, Sava and Odra, all meandering through the town centre. The river banks, rich in greenery, are a perfect venue for recreational activities. The Sisak fortification, built at the confluence of the Kupa and the Sava, evokes the times of the turbulent medieval age, when battles frequently raged. As one of the best preserved fortifications in Croatia, surrounded by meadows, it is a very popular excursion and picnic site. In its surroundings is a treasure trove of rare rural architecture.

SLAVONIA It is possibly because of its position between the rivers Sava, Drava and Danube that the lowlands of Slavonia are so versed in savouring a variety of the pleasures of life. This can be discerned in the very first encounter. Setting off down the road towards any of the Slavonian towns one is greeted by golden fields of sunflower, the swaying sea of wheat or the expanses of promising vineyards - all of them waving and saying: Slavonia is the land of the plenty.
And there are countless ways for the guest to find out for himself. Should he be in Đakovo during the Đakovački vezovi (the Embroideries of Đakovo - festivity celebrating the wealth of folklore heritage, or in Vinkovci when Vinkovačke jeseni (The Autumns of Vinkovci - another folklore festivity) take over the town, it will take but one look at the folk costumes of our womenfolk - adorned with ducats, elaborate embroidery, lace, tassles and colourfull kerchiefs, to make one realize that here the way of the plenty is the way of living and thinking. The Lipizzaner stud-farm of Đakovo, which has attracted visitors like the English Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, bears witness to that in its own way. This fine horse has been bred here since 1806. A rich table, characteristic for this area - whichever part of it you may find yourself in - is laden with the famous Slavonian kulen, ham, spiced sausages, smoked bacon, delectable meat and fresh water fish dishes. From the wine cellars of Kutjevo, Đakovo, Ilok the best of wines come to this table - Riesling, Graševina, Burgundy or Traminac. The old cellars of Ilok were the first in Europe to bottle wine into glass bottles. And for those who prefer bringing food to the table themselves, there are the slopes of Bilogora and Papuk with hunting grounds replete with both small and large game. Likewise, on the rivers and backwaters of Slavonia fishing, or rather trying to outsmart carp and catfish and make sure they find their way into a pot, is the order of the day.. And when that happens, then to the sound of tambouritzas one can .. ah, well, we leave that to your imagination. The Kopački rit Nature Park offers quite a different kind of enjoyment. Stretched alongside the Danube delta is one of the largest

bird reserves in Europe, particularly of water fowl. All of this breath taking variety of wings offers itself to our cameras. Not to say anything about a walk through the centuries old forests of oak which in itself is an exceptional sensation. And then, there is Baranja, the region where grape has been cultivated since the times of the Antiquity, where guests are met with doors to the wine cellars wide open, and offered experiences that only rural tourism makes possible. The urban Slavonia takes one to Osijek, its largest town which captivates with its Tvrđa (a system of fortifications) and its main Baroque square, but also the Osijek architecture from the Secession period which many visitors find rather impressive. Našice has the palace of the noble family of Pejačević, in Vukovar there is the Eltz palace - another Baroque gem of this area, as are the palaces in the centre of Požega. In Srijem, Ilok - the easternmost town of Croatia, boasts one of the mightiest fortifications on the Danube, while Slavonski Brod is the site of the largest fortress of the Baroque period in Europe rising where once the border between the Christian Europe and the Turkish Empire was. The dominant feature of Đakovo and its wider area is the striking neo-Romanesque cathedral.

In Osijek the Slavonian heart beats strongly indeed. Some say that it has been beating ever since the first settlements rose on the right bank of the River Drava. It beat in the times of the Roman Mursa. From the 18th century the rhythm of the heartbeat is probably strongest close to Tvrđa, a defensive-cum-urban structure quite unique in Croatia.
