This spreadsheet is used to calculate product composition from biomass hydrolysis (in this case represented by wood) with dilute sulfuric acid solution (0.05 - 10%w). Woody biomass is composed of carbohydrate polymers (cellulose and hemicellulose), lignin, and a remaining smaller part (extractives, acids, salts and minerals). The cellulose and hemicellulose, which typically comprise two-third of the dry mass, can be hydrolyzed to sugars and eventually be fermented to ethanol. The lignin cannot. The calculation in this spreadshhet is based on following reaction mechanism: Xylan ---> Xylose ---> Furfural Cellulose ---> Glucose ---> Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) In the above mechanism, xylan represents hemicellulose part of biomass. It is considered that xylan is hydrolyzed only to xylose and followed by decomposition of xylose only to furfural. While in cellulose hydrolysis process, the product is considered only glucose and followed by decomposition of glucose only to hydroxymethylfurfural or HMF. This spreadsheet contains four sheets, started by 'Intro' and sequentially followed by sheets 'KineticData', 'H+ Estimation' and at the end 'Main Calculations'. Each sheet contains clear instruction, User simply follows the instruction and gets the results in the calculated cells (green cells). Calculation References: 1.
