Faith in the Son Ministries (FSM) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) intervention,

We provide housing, education, training, mentoring, employment, counseling, family reunification with a Fatherhood Initiative, medical services, spiritual guidance to the youth at risk and returning citizens. Our mission is to bring restoration to families. We do this by creating a platform that offers a brighter future for our male youth and by encouraging men to become better sons, better husbands, better fathers, better brothers, and the best community leaders. We are committed to family and community unification by assisting men to become taxpayers, homeowners, businessmen, entrepreneurs and ultimately mentors. Our demographic group is the city of Pontiac, Michigan, whose residency was 66,337, according to the last census. Single family households make up over 40% of the population, 25.2% had a female householder with no husband present. The racial makeup of the city was 39.09% White, 47.92% African American, 12.76% Hispanic or Latino, 0.58% Native American, 2.40% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 9.97% from other races. The median income for a household in the city was $31,207, and the median income for a family was $36,391. Males had a median income of $31,961 versus $24,765 for females. About 18.0% of families and 22.1% of the population were below the poverty line. FSM has established partnerships with the Oakland County Friend of the Court and Michigan Department of Corrections, Pontiac Parole Office, both of these agencies work with 90% of the absentee fathers. These agencies will make direct referrals to FSM under the partnership agreement. In addition, our clergy members and affiliates send men to our classes and workshops. 2.

After completion of classes, we offer mentoring, counseling and alumni support. FSM has partnerships with Catholic Social Services who assist us with family counseling and unification, Olive Branch Ministry to assist with family mentoring, Oakland Family Services to assist fathers with children with disability and developmental delays. All of our ministers also provide marriage counseling. 3.

Our organization for the past 11 years have been working with men between the

ages of 25-50 who have been incarcerated, need to reunify with their families, wish to reestablish their parental rights, build relationships with their children, address their issues of child support and have decided to become responsible parents. We have a proven track record with Michigan Department of Corrections and Friend of the Court in this area. 4.

Although our primary focus over the years has been with the absentee fathers as a

result of incarceration, we realize there is an overwhelming need for additional assistance to the absentee father who has no criminal history, and has no relationship with his children. FSM is now developing an expansion of our workshops to include servicing an additional 150 men who have abandoned the children, or are intermittent fathers and/or are new fathers. These workshops will be for 90 days, two hour sessions, two sessions per week and will include domestic violence, understanding manhood and responsibility, family matters and decision-making, and quality time versus quantity time. 5.

The technical assistance that we need from NFI to

PID 1503602810037 strengthen our organization would be technical assistance concerning: leadership training, team building, workshop sessions on program evaluation tools, diversity and cultural differences training, technical support, and legislative support. The leadership and team building training will help us further unite our board of directors, trainers and other staff, to help us to continue to build our initiative for Pontiac and surrounding geographic areas. The diversity and cultural differences training will help our board members and staff to begin understand the different needs and cultural backgrounds of our fathers, and how the fathers relate to their children, mothers, and significant others, both socially and economically. Technical support will be needed for interaction with NFI, government entities, and any other group that may be related to the project in some fashion. FSM will need legislative support in order to continue to grow within the community and outside the community. NFI could guide us through some of the terrain. 6. Over the next several years, we plan to sustain ourselves by being 70% selfsupported and 30% foundation grants, fundraisers and private donors supported. We will establish a for-profit company that will provide construction and deconstruction as well as “green” training programs, which will allow us to initiate our Good Neighbors Act Initiative to refurbish distressed neighborhoods at affordable prices. We currently have a community outreach initiative that provides construction and handyman services to churches and other organizations, as well as residential neighbors. We have acquired property and have leased space to a coalition of businesses for income revenue. Over the next 5 - 10 years, we plan to manage business and 15600 W. 12 Mile Road | Southfield, MI 48076 Phone: (313) 860-9684 | E-mail: [email protected]

PID 1503602810037 training incubators to assist and develop independent entrepreneurs. We will buy and sell investment property and reinvest the monies into our organization. We will continue to refurbish homes through our Good Neighbors Act. Some of the current challenges that we are facing are an overwhelming need for our services to be offered to more residents than we have room for or funds to serve. There are a significant number of fathers who wish to participate in our various training opportunities for employment and they have no funding resources. In addition, we are limited on the transportation needed to assist the men in attending training classes. We foresee possible losses of income due to the challenge of spaces being consistently occupied by companies. We also foresee difficulties in getting mothers to participate with fathers for co-parenting. Faith in the Son Ministries has over 150 years of collective experience serving the Pontiac, Michigan community and has dedicated it’s mission to serving the male youth and men of the community. This makes FSM the natural candidate for this project and mission. You may contact Sha Jackson at (248) 860-9684 for any additional information. Thank you for this opportunity and we look forward to working with you.

National Fatherhood Initiative

Dear Stephenson, This is to support the Faith in Son application for funding from the National Fatherhood Initiative. This program, if funded, will provide assistance to parents and families who are involved in our system here at the Office of the Friend of the Court. The Friend of the Court is familiar with the needs of fathers as we work closely with families in managing child support and parenting time needs of those we serve. We support the efforts of Faith in Son in this area. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions. Sincerely, /S/ Suzanne Hollyer, Director Oakland County Friend of the Court 248-858-0431
