Dear Friends in Christ, Today is Catechetical Sunday, a day in which we bless and thank God for the men and women from the parish who have answered the call to teach the young and old about our Catholic faith. A catechist is a faith filled person that loves children and desires to “echo” God’s great love to them. We are in need of catechists on both Sunday morning and Wednesday evening to co-teach with other faith filled men and women. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the process in which men and women wishing to be in full communion with the Catholic Church come together to break open the Word and begin Sacrament preparation with their sponsors and catechetical team. If you, or someone you know, is interested in becoming a full member of the Catholic Church please call the rectory. Yours in Christ, Eileen Maggiore, Pastoral Associate

Facts from the Past Did you know… One of Christ the King’s early parishioners was Mike Ditka, who built a home in the 1960s in the subdivision just south of Glenbard East High School and lived there about five years. The new Chicago Bears player and his wife were active parishioners and helped with many fund raising projects.

Do you have any “facts from the past” that we could include in future bulletins? Please call the rectory 630-629-1717 ext 6050 or email [email protected].

Operation Andrew Dinners Council of Catholic Women Save Expired and Unused Medications The Medical Missions are in need of unused medicine to be sent to West Africa, the Philippines and South America. Please gather your unfinished or expired medications and bring them to CTK for collection. Drop them off in the Narthex before Mass on the weekend of Sept.26/27. Leave the medications in their original containers with the labels intact. You may cross out your name for privacy. Those medications whose dates are expired or cannot be used will be disposed of properly. We have to keep our waterways safe and free of medications. Our collection will be combined with medications collected from other churches in Elmhurst, Villa Park and Glen Ellyn.

These dinners with Bishop Sartain are open to all men who are high school age or older. Each evening begins at 6pm and ends by 8pm. They will have the chance to have dinner with Bishop Sartain, hear a vocation story, ask questions and meet other young men interested in knowing more about the priesthood. We have three different locations throughout the Diocese of Joliet so that each person who is interested can attend one of these dinners. Please contact your pastor or Fr. Burke at 815-834-4004 ([email protected]) if you are interested in coming to one of the following: Monday, September 21, 2009 St. Anthony Parish, Frankfort Monday, February 8, 2010 St. Isidore, Bloomingdale Wednesday, March 3, 2010 St. Joseph, Bradley

Spiritual Corner

Parish Pastoral Council

Deacon Peter Robinson

The purpose of this Council shall be to foster pastoral activity in Christ the King Parish according to the norms of Church law, the directives of the Bishop of Joliet, and the needs of the parishioners of Christ the King Church. The Council advises and makes recommendations to the Pastor. In this regard, the Pastoral Council provides a forum for addressing three aspects of parish life:

This is the month we celebrate the feast of “Our Lady of Sorrows”: September 15th. This solemn feast was not always celebrated world wide, and not always in September. Originally, this day was named the feast of The Seven Sorrows (dolors) of Our Blessed Mother. The title represents the spiritual martyring of our Blessed Mother Mary, as she stood at the foot of the Cross.

(1) Communication and coordination among the various parish groups and activities; (2) Consultation between the pastoral staff and the various parish organizations; and (3) Long-term strategic planning and policy direction for the parish as a whole. In order to fulfill this threefold mission, the Parish functions in three overlapping and synchronized areas: 1. Ministry: Individual parish groups and other related organizations engage in pastoral activity for their members and the whole parish, in accord with the nature of their ministry or service; 2. Commissions: The commissions coordinate pastoral activity in their areas of ministry. A special at-large commission or core teams may be developed that will service multifaceted tasks as the needs are defined by the Council on an annual basis; 3. Council: The Pastoral Council fosters pastoral activity in the parish as a whole, with an emphasis on long-term goals and strategic planning, rather than the day-to-day operation of the parish and its ministries. We are currently looking for active parishioners that would like to be a part of our parish leadership team. Our next Leadership evening will be on Monday, October 5, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Life Center. If you would like more information please call Eileen at 630.396.6076.

The seven sorrows or dolor’s are: 1)The prophecy of Simeon, 2) The flight into Egypt, 3) The loss of the Child Jesus at Jerusalem, 4) Meeting Jesus on the road to Calvary, 5) The standing at the foot of the Cross, 6) The descent of Jesus from the Cross, and 7) The burial of Jesus. As with we do with Christ, we use the experiences of Mary to better understand the world we live in, and the things that happen. We also learn more about our relationship with God. In the first dolor, Simeon tells Mary that her heart will be pierced with a sword. This reminds us that she not only suffered as the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whereas her heart was pierced by the suffering and death of her son, it is also pierced with the sins we all commit and our occasional indifference to her Son. In the Second dolor, worried sick when they couldn’t find Jesus in the caravan Mary and Joseph went back to Jerusalem only to find Him in the Temple with His Father. Mary searches for us too when, unlike Jesus, we stray from the path of righteousness. The fourth dolor, Mary sees Jesus on the way to the Cross. How she must have felt, knowing that this would be one of the last times she sees him alive. She looks at us too with those same loving eyes, praying that we see her son as our savior, so we may live. The last three dolars are the most painful yet the most glorious; Mary standing at the foot of the Cross. Gazing at her child tortured and dying at the hands of all of us, her children. She suffers beyond our imagination. But the opportunity for our redemption is at hand. As she cradles his body in her lap, she prays for us, the very people who committed this act. Placing him in the tomb, she waits for His resurrection, as do we all wait for His return. Mary, Our Blessed Mother, The Most Blessed Virgin, the Coredemptrix, waits for all of us to turn to her Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. When we do, there will be no more sorrow but eternal life. Brother Knights, let us continue to ask the intercession of our Most Blessed Mother, through the Rosary and our prayers. May you have a Blessed September.

Joyful Again! Widowed Ministry On Sunday, September 20th, Christ the King will host Joyful Again! volunteers at their annual “thank you” gathering. Their day will begin with joining our community for 12:00 p.m. Mass. These volunteers have at least one thing in common; they have all been widowed, and they have come back to the organization to serve newly widowed people who come to the weekend program. Joyful Again! was founded over 20 years ago when a few widowed people got together to plan a format for the Saturday and Sunday program. Since then, thousands of widowed men and women have gone through the weekend retreat/workshop seeking to restore a sense of hope and joy in their lives. Often a widowed person will reach a sort of “plateau” in the grieving process, where he/she feels sort of “stuck” and cannot move on. This is an excellent opportunity for the person to register for the weekend. Programs are held throughout the Chicagoland area in both the dioceses of Chicago and Joliet, northwest, southwest and in the west suburban area in Elmhurst. Christ the King parish welcomes the volunteers of Joyful Again! Widowed Ministry. For more information, please call 708-354-7211.

Prayerful Participation Needed for 40 Days for Life Dear Christ the King Parishioners, Christians throughout Lombard and the surrounding communities are invited to take part in the national 40 Days for Life effort from September 23 through November 1, 2009. In addition to 40 days of peaceful prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, please consider volunteering to pray outside of the Aanchor Health Center at 1186 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn, just east of the House of Brides. Please help spread the word to others about this important life-saving effort. Please call Fr Peter at 630.396.6079, or email at [email protected] to volunteer your time. Thank you in advance for your prayers and participation. We have also been invited to join our neighboring parish, St. James the Apostle in Glen Ellyn for a Holy Hour for Life beginning at 5:30 p.m. at their church, 480 S. Park Blvd., on October 1st, ending with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6:30 p.m. as a special time of prayer for this effort. We will adjourn to the parish hall for a pro-life speaker followed by coffee, dessert and conversation. We are very grateful to Madalene Cannata for helping in the organization of this 40 Days for Life prayer vigil. More information is available at www.40daysforlife.com/glenellyn.

Attention All Parishioners: Are you leaving for an extended vacation? Snowbirds heading South? If you are going to be away for an extended period of time (more than a month), or if you are planning to move, it is very important that you notify the parish office. In recent months there has been an increase in the number of envelope packets and letters that have been returned to the office. With the rising cost in postage, this is becoming expensive. Please call our business manager, Elaine Ward, at 630.396.6073. Your cooperation in this matter is deeply appreciated.

Altar Server Training and Refresher Meeting Fr Peter will offer two times for anyone interested in becoming an altar server here at Christ the King. Current servers are also invited as a “refresher” course. Altar Servers should be in fourth grade or older. If you are planning on attending, please call Bill Runge at 630.396.6075 or email him at [email protected].

Natural Family Planning (NFP) Classes NFP is an umbrella term for certain methods used to achieve and avoid pregnancies. These methods are based on observation of the naturally occurring signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. No drugs, devices, or surgical procedures are used to avoid pregnancy. NFP reflects the dignity of the human person within the context of marriage and family life, promotes openness to life, and recognizes the value of the child. By respecting the love-giving and life-giving natures of marriage, NFP can enrich the bond between husband and wife. This is for couples seeking to responsibly plan their families and prefer a method that is natural and non-invasive, provides knowledge about reproductive functioning, has a positive impact on personal communication, does not diminish pleasure, and is effective. (Psychological Aspects of Achieving or Avoiding Pregnancy, L. J. Severy and J. Robinson, in Integrating Faith and Science Through Natural Family Planning, T. Notare and R.J. Fehring, 130, Marquette University Press, 2004)

The Administration Commission of Christ the King Parish announces an opportunity to have your name included in a new space being created for reflection around the Ten Commandments monument. We are offering commemorative paving bricks, engraved with your name, or those of your family and friends, or a place for a message from you to present and future generations.

The paving bricks will surround the Ten Commandment monument shown in the above picture. Your tax deductible contribution towards the project will benefit our parish in many ways:

• •

Create an additional, appropriate space for reflection and prayer, near the statue of Mary, the rose garden, and the new monument. Assist the Administration Committee in its mission regarding the repair, maintenance and improvement of our buildings and campus.

The net proceeds from this project will be used to: • Pay some of the expenses related to our Parish’s 50th anniversary events and celebrations. • Reduce energy consumption, by changing the present school lighting to more efficient light fixtures. • Help fund any other Commission projects, as announced in the Parish Bulletin. • Make an extraordinary payment towards reducing the Parish mortgage balance. The engraved paving bricks will be offered in three sizes: 4” x 8” with a maximum of three engraved lines 8” x 8” with a maximum of six engraved lines 12” x 12” with a maximum of 9 engraved lines You can also include, at no extra charge, a logo design, from a selected list of those available from the manufacturer. However, be aware that most logos take the space of 3 characters on two lines. The list of logos which are available will be at the information table, in the vestibule of the church most weekends. We will also have this information, and the order form, available on-line, at the Parish’s web-site: http:// www.CTKLombard.org. You can down load the order form there. You may also e-mail your order request to the Administration committee at [email protected]. We ask that if you do e-mail an order, that it is only for bricks without logos. It is currently anticipated that the bricks will be installed, in April, 2010, and the new space dedicated in May, 2010. Any questions can be emailed to the Administration Commission: [email protected]; or directed to a commission member (if present) after any weekend Mass.

Finance Council August Meeting Minutes The Finance Council met on the evening of August 12th. Elaine Ward, Lori Bhardwaj, Rick Cosenza, Brian Carnahan, Eileen Maggiore, and Jill Placey were in attendance. Minutes from the previous meeting were unanimously approved. White envelope contributions closed the fiscal year with a yearly total of approximately $691K. This is much lower than the previous fiscal year’s total of around $760. Green envelope giving was down nearly 20% this fiscal year, and June was the lowest monthly total we’ve ever experienced. We discussed ways to increase contributions and the best way to communicate this need. At the time of the meeting, the Early Learning Academy had 21 full-time equivalent students registered. Kindergarten classes started on August 24th and Preschool on September 9th. A separate meeting was scheduled for August 27th to discuss the upcoming Annual Appeal. The next Finance meeting will take place on September 16th.

2009-10 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Diocese of Joliet The Catholic Ministries Appeal supports God’s work all over this diocese. The parish does not always have the resources to help parishioners, so the diocese supplements us with ways we can help people help themselves. We would like 100% participation. We are still far from the goal. Let’s try to do our best! Fr. Jarosz
