POWER SYSTEM ANALYSIS, CONTROL & OPTIMIZATION (PSACO-08) 13th-15th March 2008

Organized by DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

ANDHRA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (Autonomous) Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA

In Technical Sponsorship with

HYDERABAD SECTION

Venue: Department of Electrical Engineering Andhra University College of Engineering (Autonomous) Sponsored by TEQIP Andhra University College of Engineering (Autonomous)

Andhra University

"ANDHRA UNIVERSITY" was established in 1926 in the uplands of Visakhapatnam with Kailasa Hill as the backdrop and of Bay of Bengal in its front. The University is spread in a sprawling campus of 200 hectares dotted with more than 100 buildings. Presently the University is catering the Educational needs of five green districts namely Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam. The University campus is a self-contained township with two administration blocks out of which one is exclusively for housing the examination sections. The University has four constituent Colleges and four AU Campuses. The College of Arts and Commerce is the biggest constituent College in the University with 28 Departments offering 55 courses including 25 Diploma courses. The College of Science and Technology has 19 Departments, which offers 44 courses. The College of Engineering has 16 Departments involving in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programmes. There are 575 affiliated colleges spread across five districts under the territorial jurisdiction of Andhra University. The enrolment in Undergraduate courses is more than 76,000 and in PG Courses more than 20,000 students. The University is supported by about 860 teachers, 176 under regular and 41 back-log are advertised out of which 162 including 18 backlogs are filled and more than 2500 non-teaching and technical staff.

Hyderabad section IEEE Hyderabad section is one of the most active sections of IEEE in India. IEEE was formally introduced in Hyderabad, in June 1981, when a group of engineers in Hyderabad decided to form an IEEE sub-Section here. This sub-Section was rapidly elevated to a full Section, in 1984 (the year of IEEE Centenary celebrations).

All IEEE members, residing in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, are automatically members of the IEEE Hyderabad Section. Our strength (in numbers) is 3301 members (as on 31 December 2005). The section has two chapters, Computer Society and PES/IAS.

Awards & Recognitions The IEEE Hyderabad Section has won several recognitions from IEEE HQ and R10. 1. 2005 IAS Distinguished Service Award to Mr. C. Satish. It was given to him during the IAS Annual Meeting held at Hong Kong in October 2005. This was in recognition of dedicated and distinguished service to IEEE Industry Application Society. This is ther first time in its last 17 years of Awards history that a member from outside USA is chosen to get this award. 2. The 2004 R10 Outstanding Volunteer Award was persented to Mr. S Raghunathan for his outstanding contribution to the Hyderabad Section activities for last two decades. 3. The 2002 R10 Outstanding Volunteer Award was persented to Dr. S C Bhargava for his outstanding contribution to the Hyderabad Section activities over last two decades.

The Organizers Department of Electrical Engineering The Department of Electrical Engineering was started in 1955 as one of the three constituents of the Department of Engineering in Andhra University. The status of a Department was given in 1969. The department has grown significantly and currently offers a UG program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and PG programs in Power Systems & Automation and Control Systems Engineering. The department initiated developmental activities in the emerging areas of CAD and Robotics with MHRD grants. The department has well established Machines, Networks, Measurements, Power Electronics, Microprocessor, Control system and Digital Electronics Laboratories. The department is periodically organizing refresher courses for APSEB practicing engineers. The teaching faculty of the department is involved in research activities in the areas of fault detection, power system stability, load flows, optimal power flows, modal reduction, and decentralized fault detection and flexible AC transmission systems. The current focus of research is on Fuzzy logic and Neural Network Applications.

Andhra University College of Engineering (A) Andhra

University

College

of

Engineering,

Visakhapatnam, is the campus college of University. At the time of inception, was of only a Department of Engineering

with

Civil

Engineering,

Mechanical

Engineering and Electrical Engineering as the main branches. In the year 1960, the Department of Engineering was shifted to the present spacious North campus spreading over 150 acres of land. The Department of Chemical Technology, instituted in 1933, was also shifted to the same campus in 1962, adding strength to the Engineering Departments. The trifurcation of the University colleges in 1966, led to the inception of the College of Engineering as a separate constituent of the Andhra University.

At present, the College of Engineering consists of 12 Engineering and 4 Basic Sciences departments, totaling to 16 departments, offering 15 Under-Graduate Engineering day-time programmes and 4 UG Engineering part-time programmes; 28 Post-Graduate Engineering programmes, 1 MCA and 3 M.Sc. programmes in various departments. All the departments are also running Ph.D. programmes in different fields of research. The AU College of Engineering has acquired considerable reputation in the country and has several Centers of Excellence in various fields carrying out research in specialized areas. These include Center for Technology Forecasting (futurology) in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Center for Biotechnology and Center for Phase Equilibrium Thermodynamic in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Center for Energy Systems and Center for Condition monitoring & Vibration Diagnostics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Remote Sensing and Information System in the Department of Geo Engineering and Centre for Research on Off-Shore Structures in the Department of Civil Engineering. The AU College of Engineering graded along with the Andhra University by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) and awarded a rating of A+ (85%). The Government of India through its National Policy of Education implemented the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) for overall development of Technical Education in the country. The AU College of Engineering is one of the four Lead Institutions selected in the state of Andhra Pradesh for World Bank Aid.
